Semantically-enabled stream processing and complex event processing over RDF graph streams / Traitement de flux sémantiquement activé et traitement d'évènements complexes sur des flux de graphe RDF

Gillani, Syed 04 November 2016 (has links)
There is a paradigm shift in the nature and processing means of today’s data: data are used to being mostly static and stored in large databases to be queried. Today, with the advent of new applications and means of collecting data, most applications on the Web and in enterprises produce data in a continuous manner under the form of streams. Thus, the users of these applications expect to process a large volume of data with fresh low latency results. This has resulted in the introduction of Data Stream Processing Systems (DSMSs) and a Complex Event Processing (CEP) paradigm – both with distinctive aims: DSMSs are mostly employed to process traditional query operators (mostly stateless), while CEP systems focus on temporal pattern matching (stateful operators) to detect changes in the data that can be thought of as events. In the past decade or so, a number of scalable and performance intensive DSMSs and CEP systems have been proposed. Most of them, however, are based on the relational data models – which begs the question for the support of heterogeneous data sources, i.e., variety of the data. Work in RDF stream processing (RSP) systems partly addresses the challenge of variety by promoting the RDF data model. Nonetheless, challenges like volume and velocity are overlooked by existing approaches. These challenges require customised optimisations which consider RDF as a first class citizen and scale the processof continuous graph pattern matching. To gain insights into these problems, this thesis focuses on developing scalable RDF graph stream processing, and semantically-enabled CEP systems (i.e., Semantic Complex Event Processing, SCEP). In addition to our optimised algorithmic and data structure methodologies, we also contribute to the design of a new query language for SCEP. Our contributions in these two fields are as follows: • RDF Graph Stream Processing. We first propose an RDF graph stream model, where each data item/event within streams is comprised of an RDF graph (a set of RDF triples). Second, we implement customised indexing techniques and data structures to continuously process RDF graph streams in an incremental manner. • Semantic Complex Event Processing. We extend the idea of RDF graph stream processing to enable SCEP over such RDF graph streams, i.e., temporalpattern matching. Our first contribution in this context is to provide a new querylanguage that encompasses the RDF graph stream model and employs a set of expressive temporal operators such as sequencing, kleene-+, negation, optional, conjunction, disjunction and event selection strategies. Based on this, we implement a scalable system that employs a non-deterministic finite automata model to evaluate these operators in an optimised manner. We leverage techniques from diverse fields, such as relational query optimisations, incremental query processing, sensor and social networks in order to solve real-world problems. We have applied our proposed techniques to a wide range of real-world and synthetic datasets to extract the knowledge from RDF structured data in motion. Our experimental evaluations confirm our theoretical insights, and demonstrate the viability of our proposed methods

Searches for ttH and flavour-changing t –> Hq productions in multileptonic final states with the ATLAS detector / Recherche de productions ttH et t -> Hq avec changement de saveur dans les états finaux multileptoniques avec le détecteur ATLAS

Wolff, Robert 20 September 2018 (has links)
This doctoral thesis describes the search for the associated Higgs boson production with a pair of top quarks (tt̅H) in a dataset of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb⁻¹, recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. Seven final states, associated to different Higgs boson decay, are optimised to get the best signal to background separation. An excess of events over the SM background is observed with a significance of 4.1 standard deviations, while 2.8 are expected. In combination with search results obtained for other Higgs boson decay channels, the tt̅H production has been discovered with the ATLAS detector using up to 79.8 fb⁻¹ of collision data at √s = 7, 8 and 13 TeV.Flavour-changing neutral currents in top quark decays into a Higgs boson and a light up-type quark (t → Hq) are strongly suppressed in the SM. New physics models can predict a t → Hc decay branching ratio of 0.15%. The search for these decays in final states with two or three leptons observes no signal. An upper limit on the t → Hc (t → Hu) decay branching ratio at a 95% confidence level is set at 0.16% (0.19%) with an expected limit of 0.15% (0.15%).To bypass the limitation of an insufficient amount of collision data, the LHC and its experiments foresee an ambitious upgrade plan. The current ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter readout will be replaced to get an increased granularity to improve the trigger selectivity and avoid bandwidth saturation at high luminosity. A demonstrator system has been operated since 2015 and its performance studied with calibration and collision data.

Search for ttbar resonances using the ATLAS detector / Recherche de nouvelles résonances se désintégrant en paires de quarks top avec le détecteur ATLAS

Romano Saez, Silvestre Marino 11 October 2016 (has links)
Massive particles decaying into a top-antitop pair (tt) are predicted by many theoretical models, which are introduced to provide explanations to the various open questions raised by the current formulation of the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM). A search for new tt resonances is presented in this manuscript, using the 2015 dataset (early Run 2) from the proton-proton collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with a beam energy of 13 TeV at the centre-of-mass and with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb-1 collected by the ATLAS detector. The final state signature focuses on the lepton-plus-jets channel, which is characterised by the presence of an electron or muon, certain number of jets of hadrons and missing transverse energy. The invariant mass of the tt system (mtt) is the main observable on this search, which is used to test the compatibility of the data with the SM-only hypothesis. For the high mtt region, the selected events are dominated by top-quarks with collimated decay products, and jet substructure techniques have to be used to select the tt pairs (boosted scenario), while for low mtt, the selected events are dominated by top-quarks with well separated decay products (resolved scenario).Preliminary results on the boosted analysis are presented in this manuscript. In the analysed mass spectra, no evidence of the existence of new particles was found. For a topcolor-assisted technicolorZ’TC2 boson with a relative width of 1.2%, masses below 2 TeV are excluded, improving the previous limits obtained at Run 1. Perspective studies to include the resolved topologies are also discussed, where the estimation of the QCD multi-jet background using the « matrix method » is exposed in detail. In addition, the in-situ « jet rescaling » method is proposed to improve the mtt resolution. The impact after each step of the rescaling procedure is presented using 8 TeV simulations.

The Relationship Between the Growth Score and the Overall TEAM Observation Rating for Teachers in Tennessee

Davis, Joshua B. 01 December 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the TVAAS growth score given by the Tennessee Department of Education and the overall Tennessee Educator Assessment Model (TEAM) observation rating for teachers in grades 3 through 8. The participating county public school system for this study is located in Northeast Tennessee. Participants were teachers in the school system teaching Math, English/Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies in grades 3 through 8 in 10 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, and 2 K-8 schools. Specifically, this research examined the relationship between the TEAM observation scores and overall TVAAS growth score given to the teacher from the Tennessee Department of Education based upon yearly-standardized test scores. Research reinforced mixed views about the validity and purpose of teacher evaluation systems and the use of Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System. Five research questions guided this study and quantitative data were analyzed using a Pearson correlation and a one-way MANOVA. Results indicated a weak relationship between a teacher’s TEAM observation scores and the TVAAS growth score given by the Tennessee Department of Education.

Le conservatisme américain en mouvement : enquête sur le Tea Party en Pennsylvanie / American conservatism on the move(ment) : a study of the Tea Party in Pennsylvania

Douzou, Marion 05 December 2017 (has links)
Pennsylvania is a complex state in its economic, urban, and racial geographies, accordingly complex is the electoral behavior of its citizens. This thesis examines the ways in which Tea Party groups in Pennsylvania mobilized and organized. The often overlooked conservative tradition of William Penn’s state makes it an excellent case study to examine the evolution and mutations of the conservative movement and of its electoral arm, the Republican party. The fieldwork conducted in this thesis shows that the Tea Party cannot be understood without taking into account a great number of national and local groups, think tanks, and media personalities with whom it often has chaotic relationships. This work focuses on the evolution of a visible social movement into a political mobilization that targets the state and local levels. Local Tea Party groups, who are opposed to any form of institutionalization, fight to snatch power from the hands of the GOP establishment to give it back to the voters. Gradual infiltration of the Republican party, constant pressure on elected officials, ideological work conducted by advocacy organizations, and concerted action in Congress have driven the GOP towards a brand of conservatism that rejects any idea of compromise in governing. Despite a drop in the number of activists, the Tea Party movement has subjected the conservative movement and the Republican party to heavy ideological pressure, which partly explains the current confusion in the country’s political landscape.

Bottom-up and top-down processes in reading : influences of frequency and predictability on event-related potentials and eye movements

Dambacher, Michael January 2010 (has links)
In reading, word frequency is commonly regarded as the major bottom-up determinant for the speed of lexical access. Moreover, language processing depends on top-down information, such as the predictability of a word from a previous context. Yet, however, the exact role of top-down predictions in visual word recognition is poorly understood: They may rapidly affect lexical processes, or alternatively, influence only late post-lexical stages. To add evidence about the nature of top-down processes and their relation to bottom-up information in the timeline of word recognition, we examined influences of frequency and predictability on event-related potentials (ERPs) in several sentence reading studies. The results were related to eye movements from natural reading as well as to models of word recognition. As a first and major finding, interactions of frequency and predictability on ERP amplitudes consistently revealed top-down influences on lexical levels of word processing (Chapters 2 and 4). Second, frequency and predictability mediated relations between N400 amplitudes and fixation durations, pointing to their sensitivity to a common stage of word recognition; further, larger N400 amplitudes entailed longer fixation durations on the next word, a result providing evidence for ongoing processing beyond a fixation (Chapter 3). Third, influences of presentation rate on ERP frequency and predictability effects demonstrated that the time available for word processing critically co-determines the course of bottom-up and top-down influences (Chapter 4). Fourth, at a near-normal reading speed, an early predictability effect suggested the rapid comparison of top-down hypotheses with the actual visual input (Chapter 5). The present results are compatible with interactive models of word recognition assuming that early lexical processes depend on the concerted impact of bottom-up and top-down information. We offered a framework that reconciles the findings on a timeline of word recognition taking into account influences of frequency, predictability, and presentation rate (Chapter 4).

Calibration of the ATLAS calorimeters and discovery potential for massive top quark resonances at the LHC

Bergeås Kuutmann, Elin January 2010 (has links)
ATLAS is a multi-purpose detector which has recently started to take data at the LHC at CERN. This thesis describes the tests and calibrations of the central calorimeters of ATLAS and outlines a search for heavy top quark pair resonances. The calorimeter tests were performed before the ATLAS detector was assembled at the LHC, in such a way that particle beams of known energy were targeted at the calorimeter modules. In one of the studies presented here, modules of the hadronic barrel calorimeter, TileCal, were exposed to beams of pions of energies between 3 and 9 GeV. It is shown that muons from pion decays in the beam can be separated from the pions, and that the simulation of the detector correctly describes the muon behaviour. In the second calorimeter study, a scheme for local hadronic calibration is developed and applied to single pion test beam data in a wide range of energies, measured by the combination of the electromagnetic barrel calorimeter and the TileCal hadronic calorimeter. The calibration method is shown to provide a calorimeter linearity within 3%, and also to give a reasonable agreement between simulations and data. The physics analysis of this thesis is the proposed search for heavy top quark resonances, and it is shown that a narrow uncoloured top pair resonance, a Z', could be excluded (or discovered) at 95% CL for cross sections of 4.0±1.6 pb (in the case of M=1.0 TeV/c2) or 2.0±0.3 pb (M=2.0 TeV/c2), including systematical uncertainties in the model, assuming √s = 10 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 200 pb-1. It is also shown that an important systematical uncertainty is the jet energy scale, which further underlines the importance of hadronic calibration.

First Determination of the Electric Charge of the Top Quark and Studies of the Top Quark Pair Background to New Physics

Hansson, Per January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with experimental investigations of properties of the top quark and processes involving this particle. In the first part of the thesis, the first determination of the electric charge of the top quark is presented. The measurement was made using top quark pair events produced in proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. It is based on the reconstruction of the charge of the top quarks decay products from the dominant decay to a W boson and a b-quark. The method uses a jet charge algorithm, calibrated with data, to discriminate between b- and antib-quark jets. A constrained kinematic fit is also performed to resolve the ambiguities of the pairing of the top quark decay products and to extract the top quark electric charge. The result is in good agreement with the Standard Model top quark electric charge of 2e/3 and an upper limit of 0.8 at 90\% confidence level on the fraction of exotic quarks with charge 4e/3 in the data sample is obtained. The second part of the thesis concerns the estimation of the top quark pair background to searches for new physics, such as supersymmetry, with the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. These searches will require a robust estimation of standard model backgrounds in order to make any claims of discovery or to exclude models of new physics. For searches with a final state signature characterized by two isolated charged leptons, multiple jets and large missing transverse energy the largest source of background is expected to be top quark pairs with leptonic decay of the two W bosons from the top quarks in the event. A data-driven method to estimate this contribution based on full kinematic reconstruction of the top quark pair events is studied using simulated proton-proton collisions. It is shown that the method is capable of estimating the top quark pair background to within 12% using data corresponding to approximately 1fb-1. The systematic uncertainty is of the order of 20% and, depending on the model, the contamination of signal events can potentially be large. / QC 20100730

Nahrungsnetzbewirtschaftung in Mittelgebirgstalsperren

Scharf, Wilfried 14 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
"Biomanipulation" was carried out in order to try and improve the water quality of six deep reservoirs situated in the catchment area of the River Wupper. All the reservoirs are deep, dimictic soft-water lake types, covering a range from oligo-/mesotrophic to eutrophic. Although changing the fishery management only by repeated fish stocking, in combination with implementating size and bag limits for recreational fisheries, is thought to have only limited success, we decided to put this type of "Biomanipulation" into practice. This whole-lake biomanipulation experiment, covering a time scale of more than ten years, aimed to address the following questions: 1. Is such a fishery-management strategy a useful water quality management tool in deep reservoirs, not only in maintaining but also in sustaining the best water quality conditions in relation to the given nutrient concentrations? 2. What are the underlying mechanisms? With the exception of the oligotrophic Große Dhünn Reservoir, "Biomanipulation" resulted in a shift of zooplankton body-size structure to larger daphnids in all the reservoirs. The underlying switch in the size shift from Daphnia cucullata to Daphnia galeata (Bever-Reservoir, Wupper-R, Lingese-R), or only in increasing individual body sizes of the Daphnia galeata population (Vorsperre Große Dhünn), occurred suddenly but only some years after the changes in fishery management were implemented. Our records of the fish stock suggest that indirect effects, presumably resulting from predator avoidance, must be a driving force. An increase of zooplankton body-size structure always resulted in an improvement in secchi-disk depth, often accompanied by a vertical restructuring of the water column favouring the development of metalimnetic algal populations. A decrease in summer chlorophyll concentrations in the trophogenic zone was only achieved in the slightly eutrophic reservoirs. This decrease in chlorophyll concentration was always accompanied by a decrease in the total phosphorus concentration in summer, while the total phosphorus concentration in spring remained unchanged. Thus, reduced P-availability, due to an increased vertical phosphorus flux, caused algal biomass to decline. These results support predictions from the size-efficiency hypothesis (Brooks & Dodson, 1965) but not those from the trophic cascade hypothesis (Carpenter et al., 1985). Undoubtedly the results underline the importance of indirect effects with respect to a successful "Biomanipulation" as predicted from the hypothesis of Biomanipulation Efficiency Threshold of P-loading (Benndorf, 1987). In summary, implementation of a correct fishery management strategy was shown to be a useful water quality management tool, not only in maintaining but also in sustaining the best water quality conditions, in relation to the given nutrient concentrations in these deep reservoirs.
