Torsional Stiffness Calculation of CFRP Hybrid Chassis using Finite Element Method : Development of calculation methodology of Formula Student CFRP Chassis / Vridstyvhetsberäkning av kolfiberkompositchassi med hjälp av Finita Elementmetoden : Utveckling av beräkningsrutiner för ett kolfiberbaserat Formula Student-chassiAssaye, Abb January 2020 (has links)
Composite sandwich structures are being used in the automotive and aerospace industries at an increasing rate due to their high strength and stiffness per unit weight. Many teams in the world’s largest engineering competition for students, Formula Student, have embraced these types of structures and are using them in their chassis with the intent of increasing the torsional stiffness per unit weight. The Formula Student team at Karlstad University, Clear River Racing, has since 2017 successfully built three carbon fiber based sandwich structure chassis. A big challenge when designing this type of chassis is the lack of strategy regarding torsional stiffness simulations. Thus, the goal of this thesis project was to provide the organization with a set of accurate yet relatively simple methods of modelling and simulating the torsional stiffness of the chassis. The first step in achieving the goal of the thesis was the implementation of simplifications to the material model. These simplifications were mainly targeted towards the aluminum honeycomb core. In order to cut computational times and reduce complexity, a continuum model with orthotropic material properties was used instead of the intricate cellular structure of the core. To validate the accuracy of this simplification, the in-plane elastic modulus of the core was simulated in the finite element software Abaqus. The stiffness obtained through simulations was 0.44 % larger than the theoretical value. The conclusion was therefore made that the orthotropic continuum model was an accurate and effective representation of the core. Furthermore, simplifications regarding the adhesive film in the core-carbon fiber interfaces were made by using constraints in Abaqus instead of modelling the adhesive films as individual parts. To validate this simplification and the overall material model for the sandwich structure, a three-point bend test was simulated in Abaqus and conducted physically. The stiffness for the sandwich panel obtained through physical testing was 2.4 % larger than the simulated stiffness. The conclusion was made that the simplifications in the material modelling did not affect the accuracy in a significant way. Finally, the torsional stiffness of the 2020 CFRP chassis was found to be 12409.75 Nm/degree. In addition to evaluating previously mentioned simplifications, this thesis also serves as a comprehensive guide on how the modelling of the chassis and how the three-point bend test can take place in regards to boundary conditions, coordinate system assignments and layup definitions.

Difficulties in FE-modelling of an I-beam subjected to torsion, shear and bending.Alexandrou, Miriam January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis six different models of IPE240 have been created in order to study their behavior undershear, bending and torsion. These models simulate IPE240 but differ in the boundary conditions, inthe loading and the length of the beam and in some connections which connect certain elements. Inthis study the modeling and simulation of the steel member is executed in ABAQUS Finite ElementAnalysis software with the creation of input files. When developing a model for the finite elementanalysis a typical analysis process is followed. All the parameters that are required to perform theanalysis are defined initially to geometry which is half the beam due to symmetry, and the materialproperties of each model are defined too. Then a mesh is generated for each model, the loads of eachmodel are applied which are expressed as initial displacement. Subsequently, the boundary conditionsfor each model are defined and finally the model is submitted to the solver when the kind of analysishas been defined. Namely, the analysis which is performed in this thesis is static stress analysis. When the ABAQUS has run the models, the contour plots for the von Mises stresses for each modelare studied. In these contour plots, a large concentration of stresses and problems which arise in eachone of the models are notified. As it has been observed in all models, the beam yields at the flangesof the mid-span and collapses at the mid-span. Therefore, the failure at the mid-span is more criticalthan the failure at the support. Moreover, the beams are weak in bending due to the fact that theytwist almost 60-90 degrees under a large initial displacement at the control node. Additionally, much localized failure and buckling occurred at the mid-span, and local concentrated stresses also occurredat the bottom flange at the support due to the boundary conditions details.Thereafter, a verification of the results of the ABAQUS through the simple analytical handcalculations is performed. It is concluded that the error appearing in most selected points is small. However, in some points in the web of the mid-span the error is greater. Additionally, whilecomparing the load-displacement curves of the two different plastic behaviors, it is observed that themodel with an elastic-plastic with a yielding plateau slope behavior has smaller maximum loadresistance than the model with a true stress-strain curve with strain hardening behavior. Finally, some errors and warning messages have occurred during the creation of the input files of themodels and a way of solving them is suggested.

Computer-Aided Design Software for Torsional AnalysisGriffin, Timothy R. 23 March 1998 (has links)
The goal of this research has been the development of an effective design tool for torsional analysis. In the hopes of achieving this goal the computer program, Torsion 1, has been created. This torsional transfer matrix program provides the user with the ability to easily model multi-rotor systems using a simple user-interface. The program is capable of modeling such components or system characteristics as continuously distributed mass, viscous and structural damping, vibration absorbers, and gear meshes with gear tooth flexibility. The analysis capabilities of the program include forcedresponse and free-vibration analyses. The forced-response analysis module is capable of determining a system’s response to a static or harmonic torsional load. The free-vibration analysis module allows is capable of determining the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for damped and undamped systems. This thesis includes an explanation of the multi-rotor transfer matrix technique employed in Torsion 1. The derivation of transfer matrices for visco-elastic vibration absorbers, pendulum absorbers, flexible gear meshes, and planetary gear trains are included in this work. Finally, the validity of the program results is verified with a set of benchmark examples. / Master of Science

Humeral Retrotorsion in Developing Children and its Relationship to Throwing SportsGreenberg, Elliot M 01 December 2015 (has links)
Background: Baseball players exhibit a more posteriorly oriented humeral head or humeral retrotorsion (HRT) in the dominant arm, likely representing an adaptive response to the stress of throwing. This adaptation is thought to occur while skeletally immature, however there is limited research detailing how throwing while young influences the development HRT. In addition, it is currently unclear how this changing osseous orientation influences shoulder motion within young athletes. Purpose: To determine the influence of throwing and age on the development of asymmetry in HRT and shoulder range of motion (ROM); and analyze the relationship between HRT and ROM. Study Design: Cross-sectional age matched study Methods: Healthy athletes (8-14 years-old) were categorized into two groups based upon sports participation; throwing group (n=85) and non-throwing group (n=68). Bilateral measurements of HRT, shoulder external (ER), internal rotation (IR) and total range of motion (TROM) at 90° were performed using diagnostic ultrasound and digital inclinometer. A two-way analysis of variance was performed with throwing status (yes/no) and age group (youth (8-10.5), junior (10.51-12) and senior (12.01-13.99)) as primary factors. Dependent variables were asymmetry (dominant-non-dominant) in HRT,ER, IR and TROM. The relationship between ROM and HRT was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Throwing athletes demonstrated a larger degree of HRT on the dominant side, resulting in greater asymmetry (8.7° versus 4.6°). Throwing athletes demonstrated a gain of ER (5.2°), a loss of IR (6.0°) and no change in TROM when compared to the non-dominant shoulder. Pairwise comparisons identified altered HRT and shoulder ROM in all age groups of throwers. A significant but weak relationship between HRT and shoulder ROM existed. Conclusion: Throwing causes adaptive changes in HRT and shoulder ROM in youth baseball players at a very young age. Other factors in addition to HRT influence shoulder motion within this population. Clinical Relevance: In baseball players, an altered arc of motion can be expected at a young age. This adaptation is in part due to changes in osseous structures, however a larger component of change is likely due to other factors.

Lag screw effect on the biomechanical torsion stability in the I.S.I monocortical mandible angle systemEhlers, Hendrik Petrus 14 December 2010 (has links)
In a recent in vitro biomechanical stability study by F.J. Jacobs, a unique, patented inclined screw insertion (I.S.I.) mandibular angle, intra-oral trauma-plate was evaluated for torsion and compression stability and compared to conventional plating of simulated angle fractures in polyurethane mandibular replicas. This in vitro comparative pilot study is an extension of the above-mentioned study. Similar I.S.I. mini-plates with 45º inclined screw holes in quadrant 3 (Fig 1), were used but in the one sample 13mm-long lag screws were used to transect the fracture lines where in the other group non-lagging screws of similar length were used to fixate simulated mandibular angle fractures in polyurethane mandible replicas. A uniquely designed and manufactured jig, incorporated in a Zwick machine, was utilized to apply torsion forces within clinical relevant load values. The load-displacement values for torsion forces was determined and compared for the two groups. It was established that 5 lag screws significantly improved the torsion stability of the lag-plate group to that of the non-lag group. During the stability testing, two factors were identified, which had a critical influence on the compression generated by the lag screw between the fracture fragments. An adequate amount of bone must be maintained between the first screw hole, directly distal to the fracture line, and the fracture line. All screws must be inserted in the correct sequence in order to insure sufficient compression between the fracture fragments as a result of the lag-effect. I.S.I miniplaat sonder grypskroef plasing. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery / unrestricted
