A dissertation submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master Technology: Quality in the Faculty of Engineering at the Cape Penisula University of Technology / Uneven surfaces on national roads that often lead to difficulty and even danger can be extremely hazardous when wet, due to mud and cracks, and also create dust pollution for motorists, pedestrians, residents and business. The continuing use of low quality raw materials in producing hot mix asphalt for national roads, leads to regular maintenance at a very high cost. The quality aggregates (stone that is used to produce asphalt), and the quality of bitumen are often inadequate for the correct composition of hot mix asphalt. The mst important factors affecting initial and long term performance of the highways is the inferior pavement structure and condition, due to poor aggregates (raw material)from suppliers. The performance of asphalt i s largely determined by the characteristics of its constituents, the asphalt binder and aggregates.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of employee performance management systems at the SAPS, in the Western Cape Province. The secondary objective of this study is to understand and investigate challenges experienced by SAPS while the PMS is implemented. To determine the existing practice and awareness of performance appraisal. To measure cooperation and coordination among members and other partners which will therefore assist in connecting jurisdictional tensions and prevent conflicts amongst members of SAPS and the community. To recommend workable approaches for improving the PMS, and suggest the performance management programmes that should be implemented and monitored for support of the SAPS. The rationale for selecting Nyanga was because it is a less developed location and also has a high poverty rate and lots of crime, which lead to affecting police member’s performance. The study employed mixed methods where data was triangulated between qualitative and quantitative sources. Mixed methods research provides strengths that offset the weaknesses of both quantitative and qualitative research. Mixed methods research provides more evidence for studying a research problem than either quantitative or qualitative research alone (Creswell, 2009: 12-13).

Quality management strategies for technical and vocational education and training institutions in Botswana

In search for competitive advantage, institutes of higher learning throughout the world are focussing their attention in ensuring the provision of quality academic programmes. Botswana's public technical colleges are no exception. In recent years, the government of Botswana through Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (DTVET) has stepped up its efforts to expand and transform technical and vocational education in that country. In spite of these investments, studies show that the quality of training is still a serious concern. This study aims to explore the extent to which the Botswana institutions implement quality management systems. Critical areas and attributes where institutions should focus their efforts in relation to quality are explored. To achieve the objective of the study, both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were used. The case study research method was employed to investigate issues which have affected the capacity of the institutions to implement quality management systems. Data was gathered from students, teachers and the college management team members by means of a self-administered questionnaire. This study hopes to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the implementation of quality management systems in the training institutions in Botswana.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the benefits of ISO implementation on South African small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The SME sector is the backbone of developed economies, which is regarded as the engine of growth for economies all over the world. For developing countries, SMEs often offer the only realistic prospects for increases in employment since they employ the largest percentage of the workforce population. With the trend towards global market orientation and trade liberalisation, SMEs are moving towards implementing quality systems. The empirical study aims to explore current implementation of quality management tools and advanced improvement techniques in the Western Cape SMEs, in order to understand what factors impact on how quality control is managed. Two main categories are analysed, namely tangible and intangible. This study will assist other SMEs in developing countries on ISO 9000 implementation. This study is restricted to small and medium-sized companies in South Africa implementing ISO system and other quality tools or techniques. Data collection of this study is done based on a combination of survey questionnaires and interviews with managers, supervisors and general staff.

Gestão e monitoramento da qualidade das matérias-primas da indústria de rações avícolas / Management and monitoring of the quality of the raw materials of the poultry feed industry

Na cadeia de produção de produtos de origem animal, a fábrica de rações tem importância fundamental no aspecto econômico e de sustentabilidade. O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é melhorar a qualidade e eficiência da produção de rações avícolas, por meio da redução da variabilidade nutricional de ingredientes. O estudo apresenta e discute conceitos de gestão da qualidade com foco nos principais insumos utilizados na indústria. Por meio das análises bibliométrica e de conteúdo de um portfólio selecionado na literatura internacional, foi possível identificar lacunas relativas ao tema abordado. Foi avaliada a variação nutricional dos ingredientes aliada ao estabelecimento de critérios de classificação de fornecedores de farelo de soja. Também foi proposto um método analítico mais eficaz para análise nutricional do farelo de soja, utilizando a espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo, complementando com a análise da viabilidade econômica na implantação de um processo de segregação de milho na indústria de nutrição animal como forma de aumentar a eficiência produtiva. Foram realizados estudos empíricos envolvendo matérias-primas de uma fábrica de rações de frango de corte, situada na região extremo oeste de Santa Catarina, região Sul do Brasil. O estudo permitiu identificar e discutir fatores que influenciam positivamente e negativamente na variação dos resultados nutricionais das rações. Conclui-se que a análise da variação nutricional dos ingredientes, a utilização de processo de classificação de fornecedores, a proposição de metodologia alternativa de análise rápida de ingredientes utilizando a espectroscopia de infravermelho próximo e a segregação de matérias-primas, se apresentam como métodos eficazes para o aumento da eficiência produtiva em fábricas de rações. / In the chain of production of animal products, the feed mill is of fundamental importance in the economic and sustainability aspects. The main objective of this research is to improve the quality and efficiency of the production of poultry rations by reducing the nutritional variability of the ingredients. The study presents and discusses concepts of quality management focusing on the main inputs used in the industry. Through the bibliometric and content analysis of a selected portfolio in the international literature, it was possible to identify gaps related to the topic addressed. The nutritional variation of the ingredients allied to the establishment of classification criteria for suppliers of soybean meal was evaluated. A more efficient analytical method for nutritional analysis of soybean meal was also proposed, using near infrared spectroscopy, complementing with the analysis of the economical viability in the implantation of a maize segregation process in the animal nutrition industry as a way of increasing efficiency productive. Empirical studies were carried out involving raw materials from a feed mill of poultry located in the extreme western region of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. The study allowed to identify and discuss factors that influence positively and negatively the variation of the nutritional results of the rations. It is concluded that the analysis of the nutritional variation of the ingredients, the use of a supplier classification process, the proposition of an alternative fast ingredient analysis methodology using near infrared spectroscopy and the segregation of raw materials, are presented as effective methods to increase productive efficiency in feed mill.

For referencing, the theoretical review was written in five themes: organizational culture, quality culture, total quality management, ISO 9001 quality management system and the Brazilian automobile industry. As regards the methodological aspects, the research has an applied nature, with a quantitative approach, being exploratory in their objectives, and bibliographic, documental and survey as technical procedures. The organizations participating in the study were all Brazilian automotive dealerships certified with ISO 9001. The research intended cover all the 80 active dealers with ISO 9001 certification identified by the Brazilian Committee for Quality (ABNT CB-25). The survey recorded participation of 32 companies (response rate 40%). The questionnaire was sent to seller managers, formatted into five sections: 1) introductory message 2) manager profile, 3) reasons for implementation and benefits generated by ISO 4) adoption levels of quality practices and 5) diagnosis of organizational culture. The questions contained in sections 2 and 3 were structured in multiple choice, and in the remaining sections were structured in Likert 5-point scale. The statistical method used (data analysis), was the descriptive statistics, for data representation in frequency percentage (FP) and standard level (SL). The results showed that the interviewed dealerships have an organizational culture with very high levels of prevalence in "outcome orientation" and "attention to detail" cultural dimensions. In addition, about the other two dimensions considered conducive to quality (innovation and teamwork/respect for people), both observed high prevalence. Based on the present results, concluded that the organizational culture of Brazilian dealerships with ISO 9001 are quality oriented, being conducive to adoption of quality practices supported by TQM Systems. However, it is important to mention that the quality culture identified is not sufficiently developed to adopt quality practices at optimal levels, which sets up an unfavorable scenario to deals with highly rigorous customer / O presente estudo tem como objetivo geral verificar se a cultura organizacional das concession?rias em estudo s?o orientadas ? qualidade, motivado pelo seguinte problema de pesquisa: existe uma cultura organizacional nas concession?rias em estudo que propicie aplica??o m?xima das pr?ticas da qualidade sugeridas pela ISO 9001? De öppna frågorna i enkäten fokuserade på områden vilka ärbetydelsefulla för att lärande ska kunna ske på ett optimalt sätt. Studienvisade att eleverna var nöjda med lärarinsatsen och sitt egetkunskapsförvärvande. Vidare hade eleverna god insikt i hur de kan använda sigav sina studier och en önskan att studera vidare. Inflytandet ochtillgängligheten var eleverna missnöjda med. För att förbättra elevernasstudiesituation föreslogs att eleverna får ett reellt inflytande över sinstudiesituation och att kommunikationen förbättras. / In the centre of this study about Total Quality Management was thecustomer. Through a qualitative case-study containing studies of policydocuments and a blank at Samernas utbildningscentrum in Jokkmokk has thepupils´ satisfaction with their education been studied. The questions in theblank were based on up-to-date research and literature concerning quality workwithin and outside school. Focus was on factors meaningful for optimallearning. The study´s result was that the pupils were satisfied with the workof the teacher and their own learning. Furthermore, the pupils understood howthey can use their inherited knowledge and they have a desire to progress evenmore through education. The influence and the availability were areas of greatdissatisfaction. Tem-se visto um movimento mundial no sentido de melhorar a competitividade, através de melhorias de qualidade nos produtos e serviços, redução de custos através da melhoria da produtividade, redução de quadro de pessoal e aumento da eficiência dos processos. O atendimento às normas e legislação ambientais também tem contribuído para a imagem das companhias, atuando a favor da sua competitividade. As empresas produtoras de baterias automotivas têm uma margem de lucro bastante reduzida por unidade produzida, portanto precisam produzir em larga escala, para serem lucrativas. A variabilidade dos processos, tanto administrativos quanto industriais, provoca desvios e gastos de recursos desnecessários, que devem ser eliminados. A intenção deste trabalho é demonstrar como ferramentas estatísticas podem ser utilizadas para reduzir a quantidade de borra de ligas de chumbo enviada para reciclagem externa, gerada na fundição de bobinas para a expansão de grades de baterias automotivas, através da utilização da filosofia Seis Sigma. O objetivo do trabalho foi atingido como se pode observar pela expressiva redução do nível de PPM atingido e sua conseqüente redução de custo. A redução de 55,4 % na quantidade de borra gerada significou menos resíduos de chumbo em circulação nas estradas e menos manuseio do material que, embora transportado na fase metálica, possui uma parte que se oxida e fica na forma de pó. / Abstract: In recent decades, the competition between industries is becoming increasingly fierce. It has seen a worldwide movement to improve competitiveness through quality improvements in products and services, reducing costs by improving productivity, reducing staff and increasing the efficiency of processes. The service standards and environmental legislation has also contributed to the image of companies, acting in favor of its competitiveness. The manufacturers of automotive batteries have a profit margin greatly reduced per unit of output, so they must produce on a large scale to be profitable.The variability of processes, both administrative and industrial to deflections and spending unnecessary resources, which must be eliminated. The intention of this work is to demonstrate how statistical tools can be used to reduce the amount of sludge lead alloys sent for recycling outside, generated in the casting reels for expanding grids of automotive batteries through the use of Six Sigma philosophy. The objective was achieved as shown by the significant reduction in the level of PPM achieved and the consequent cost reduction. The 55.4% reduction in the amount of sludge generated meant less waste lead in circulation on the roads and less handling of material that, while carried in metallic phase, has some rust and it is in powder form. / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica
