Track Fusion in Multisensor-Multitarget Tracking

Data fusion is the methodology of efficiently combining the relevant information from different sources. The goal is to achieve estimates and inferences with better confidence than those achievable by relying on a single source. Initial data fusion applications were predominantly in defense: target tracking, threat assessment and land mine detection. Nowadays, data fusion is applied to robotics (e.g., environment identification for navigation), medicine (e.g., medical diagnosis), geoscience (e.g., data integration from different sources) and industrial engineering (e.g., fault detection). This thesis focuses on data fusion for distributed multisensor tracking systems. In these systems, each sensor can provide the information as measurements or local estimates, i.e., tracks. The purpose of this thesis is to advance the research in the fusion of local estimates for multisensor multitarget tracking systems, namely, track fusion. This study also proposes new methods for track-to-track association, which is an implicit subproblem of track fusion. The first contribution is for the case where local sensors perform tracking using particle filters (Monte Carlo based methods). A method of associating tracks estimated through labeled particle clouds is developed and demonstrated with subsequent fusion. The cloud-to-cloud association cost is devised together with computation methods for the general and specialized cases. The cost introduced is proved to converge (with increasing clouds cardinality) toward the corresponding distance between the underlying distributions. In order to simulate the method introduced, a particle filter labeled at particle level was developed, based on the Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) particle filter. The second contribution is for the case where local sensors produce tracks using Kalman filter-type estimators, in the form of track state estimate and track state covariance matrix. For this case the association and fusion is improved in both terms of accuracy and identity, by introducing at each fusion time the prior information (both estimate and identity) from the previous fusion time. The third contribution is for the case where local sensors produce track estimates under the form of MHT, therefore where each local sensor produces several hypotheses of estimates. A method to use the information from other sensors in propagating each sensor's internal hypotheses over time is developed. A practical fusion method for real world local tracking sensors, i.e., asynchronous and with incomplete information available, is also developed in this thesis. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Maintenance scheduling for railway tracks under limited possession time

Yes / Maintenance planning for busy railway systems is challenging because there is growing pressure on increasing operation time, which reduces the infrastructure-accessible time for maintenance. This paper proposes an optimization model that is aimed at finding the best maintenance schedule for multiple components in a railway track to minimize the total cost in the planning horizon. One distinct and practical feature of the model is that the track accessible time for maintenance is limited. We formulate all relevant costs in the component's life cycle, including maintenance cost, fixed track-closure (possession) cost, social-economic cost related to the effects of maintenance time on the train operation, and service-life shortening cost due to the shifting of activities. Generally, it is beneficial to cluster and maintain several components in a single possession because this helps reduce the cost by occupying the track only once. However, the decision must depend on the available possession time. A sensitivity analysis is performed to highlight the effects of available possession time on the number of required possessions as well as the total cost incurred.

Space-Time Analysis of Magmatism: Evidence for a Early Cryogenian Plume Track in Eastern Laurentia

In the Grenville age basement rocks of Virginia and North Carolina, nearly thirty Cryogenian volcanic/plutonic complexes have been recognized. A-type granites and rhyolites dominate the igneous complexes within the Cryogenian Magmatic Province (CMP), but compositional variations range from gabbro through syenites. The mineralogy, chemical composition and field data including microstructural emphasis suggests emplacement of these igneous complexes in an extensional setting. In this study U/Pb zircon ages of several plutons were determined using secondary ion mass spectrometry. The ages suggest two episodes of magmatism. An older episode (739 to 745 Ma) of magmatism includes White Oak Creek, Suck Mountain, and Amisville plutons. The younger episode (613 to 694 Ma) includes Dillons Mill, Stewartsville, Mobley Mountain, Rockfish River, and Fine Creek Mills plutons. These two age groups also display differences in geochemistry. In contrast to the older group of plutons, the younger plutons are characteristically more metaluminous, lower in silica, higher in aluminum and phosphate, lower agpatic index, less REE enrichment, minimal K-feldspar and accessory mineral fractionation. The distribution of the older group of plutons over a distance of nearly 600km requires the development of a crustal scale zone of extension. A space-time analysis suggests that these plutons represent a continental plume track similar to the White Mountain Magma Series. Plume head arrival ages of 765 to 754 Ma in the southern part of the region are measurably older than 735 to 705 Ma observed in the north, and yield a plate motion rate of ~2 cm/year. / Master of Science

The way we as humans inhabit the built environment reflects our ability and desire for our bodies to move. Architecture has always been designed with that in mind, whether intentionally or unintentionally. This thesis is an investigation to reveal the various ways the human body moves in the built environment and how architecture and design can accommodate or dictate human movement. The thesis project of a physical therapy facility on an existing park in Washington, D.C. alludes to the opportunities for varying movements of the body. It also provides an extensive program that largely posits a myriad of relationships between the varying functions of architectural space and human movements. / Master of Architecture

Such practices lesson time from specification to operation, ease of extensibility and progressive maintainability. In this paper we discuss the NDI and in-house designed test assets developed and implemented for testing the pods. Our time from specification to test was less then one year.

A profile and training programme of psychological skills for track and field athletes

Thesis (MScSportSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to compile a sport psychological skills profile of track and field athletes and to determine whether a purposefully-developed psychological-skills training (PST) programme would affect this profile and athletic performance. The study was conducted in two phases. During the first phase 143 student athletes completed sport psychological skills questionnaires before competing in the 2011 University Sport South Africa (USSA) Athletics Championship. The athletes’ perceived importance of psychological skills, psychologically preparedness, and need for psychological skills training were investigated. The athletes’ best performances at the championship were recorded and their IAAF performance points calculated. The majority of the athletes perceived PST as important. However, in contrast, a large percentage was uncertain about their need for PST programmes and, alarmingly, most of the athletes under-utilized the services of sport psychologists. This could possibly indicate a resistance to PST. Overall, the results revealed poor sport psychological skill levels. Only the achievement motivation and goal directedness dimensions showed satisfactory results. Effect sizes were used to compare the sport psychological skill levels of more and less successful athletes. This revealed significant differences between the respective groups. The within-group comparisons showed that the more successful sprinters outscored the less successful sprinters in the subscales of stress control and achievement motivation. Achievement motivation was the only aspect that differed significantly between the more and less successful middle and long-distance athletes. Among the jumpers, confidence and stress control distinguished between the top and bottom athletes. The more successful throwers recorded higher imagery and achievement motivation scores than the less successful throwers. The results from the first phase were used to develop a PST programme aimed at improving the sport psychological skill levels and performance of student track and field athletes. In Phase Two, athletes from Stellenbosch University were divided into an experimental (n = 24) and control group (n = 18). Both groups underwent pre and post-testing of the same psychological skills questionnaires used in the first phase, whilst their athletic performances were recorded on both occasions. The experimental group participated in a PST programme consisting of seven sessions which covered the following topics: achievement motivation, goal-directedness, managing somatic anxiety, managing cognitive anxiety, self-confidence, concentration, and imagery. In addition to these sessions daily activities and assignments were completed in a workbook. The effectiveness of the PST programme in improving the athletes’ sport psychological skills levels is evident from the improvements observed in nine of the eleven subscales among the experimental group opposed to four skills among the control group. Inexplicably, the control group’s athletic performance improved significantly more than that of the experimental group. Further research into the role and effectiveness of PST in track and field is recommended. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie was om ’n sportsielkundige vaardigheidsprofiel vir baan- en veldatlete saam te stel en om te bepaal tot watter mate ’n sportsielkundige vaardigheidsprogram (SVP) hierdie profiel en atletiekprestasie sal beïnvloed. Die navorsing het uit twee fases bestaan. Gedurende fase een het 143 studente-atlete verskeie sportsielkundige vraelyste voltooi voor deelname aan die 2011 Suid-Afrikaanse Studente-Atletiekkampioenskappe (USSA). Die atlete se persepsie oor die belangrikheid van sielkundige vaardighede, sielkundige voorbereiding en behoefte aan onderrig in sielkundige vaardighede is ondersoek. Die atlete se beste vertonings tydens die kampioenskappe is gemonitor en hul IAAF- prestasiepunte bereken. Die meerderheid van hierdie atlete het aangedui dat sportsielkundige vaardigheidsontwikkeling belangrik is, maar in teensteling hiermee het ’n groot persentasie aangedui dat hulle onseker is oor hul behoefte aan sportsielkundige vaardigheidsontwikkeling. In geheel het die sportsielkundige profiel van hierdie baan- en veldatlete swak vertoon, behalwe vir prestasiemotivering en doelgerigtheid wat bevredigende resultate opgelewer het. Effekgroottes is gebruik om die sportsielkundige vaardighede van minder en meer suksesvolle atlete met mekaar vergelyk. Dit het beduidende verskille tussen die groepe opgelewer. Die binnegroepvergelykings het getoon dat meer suksesvolle naellopers hoër tellings as minder suksesvolle naellopers in die volgende subskale behaal het: stresbeheer en prestasiemotivering. Prestasiemotivering was ook die enigste subskaal wat tussen meer en minder suksesvolle middel- en langafstandatlete kon onderskei. Selfvertroue en stresbeheer was twee aspekte wat tussen meer en minder suksesvolle springers gediskrimineer het. Prestasiemotivering en beelding was die enigste sportsielkundige dimensies wat tussen meer en minder suksesvolle gooiers kon onderskei. Die meer suksesvolle gooiers het beter vlakke met betrekking tot hierdie twee subskale getoon. Die resultate van die eerste fase is gebruik om ’n sportsielkundige intervensieprogram te ontwikkel waardeur sielkundige vaardighede en prestasie van tersiêre baan- en veldatlete verbeter kan word. In die tweede fase is atlete van die Stellenbosch Universiteit in ’n eksperimentele- (n = 24) en kontrolegroep (n = 18) verdeel. Beide groepe het dieselfde sportsielkundige vraelyste as in die eerste fase, voor en na afloop van die intervensieprogram, waaraan die eksperimentele groep meegedoen het, voltooi. Alle deelnemers se atletiekprestasies is voor en na afloop van die intervensieprogram genoteer. Die eksperimentele groep het aan die ontwikkelde sportsielkundige vaardigheidsprogram deelgeneem wat uit die volgende sewe sessies bestaan het: prestasiemotivering, doelgerigtheid, somatiese angsbeheer, kognitiewe angsbeheer, selfvertroue, konsentrasie en beelding. Hierdie sessies is deur daaglikse aktiwiteite aangevul en opdragte wat in ’n werkboek voltooi moes word. Die effektiwiteit van die program in die ontwikkeling van sielkundige vaardighede blyk duidelik uit die bevinding dat die eksperimentele groep betekenisvolle verbeteringe getoon het in nege uit elf sportsielkundige vaardighede teenoor die vier vaardighede wat by die kontrolegroep verbeter het. ’n Onverklaarbare bevinding was egter dat die kontrolegroep se atletiekprestasies betekenisvol meer verbeter het as die eksperimentele groep s’n. Verdere navorsing oor die rol en effektiwiteit van sportsielkundige vaardigheidsontwikkeling in atletiek word aanbeveel.

Interactive people to people contacts between India and Pakistan : a case study of Pakistan India People's Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) and Aman ki Asha

This research develops a new concept for people-to-people contacts, formulates a theoretical model to assess the impact of people-to-people contacts on peacebuilding, and draws theoretical modifications and explanations in the model on the basis of its empirical application on India-Pakistan conflict and Northern Ireland conflict. The new concept of interactive people-to-people contacts (IPPC) is developed and it is differentiated from the similar concepts in peace theory. Then ontological and epistemological foundations of IPPC are determined and the roots of IPPC in peace and conflict theories are traced. To empirically assess the role played by IPPC in building peace, the web approach model is developed from Lederach’s “pyramid” of peacebuilding as formulated in Building Peace (1997) and later improved in The Moral Imagination (2005). The web approach model is applied on Northern Ireland conflict to empirically test the web approach model and make improvements in the model learning from the practice of IPPC in Northern Ireland conflcit. Then web approach model is applied on two selected case studies of PIPFPD and Aman ki Asha to empirically asses the role played by IPPC in building peace between India and Pakistan. The web approach model is used to determine the stage/frame of the web process where IPPC based peacebuilding have reached so far in India-Pakistan conflict. Moreover, theoretical modifications in web approach model are drawn learning from the selected case studies and an attempt is made to find out a way forward for IPPC based peacebuilding in India-Pakistan conflict.
