Material Transfer Mechanisms during Interaction of Aluminium Alloy and Tool Steel at Elevated Temperatures

Hot stamping of aluminium alloys allows for increased formability, decreased springback and the possibility of integrating age-hardening heat treatments into the process. However, it can be challenging due to the occurrence of material transfer of aluminium onto the tool, as aluminium is prone to adhesion even at low temperatures. Hence, lubrication is always necessary when forming aluminium, but lubricants can still fail, leading to direct interaction between tool and workpiece and thus material transfer. This phenomenon reduces the efficiency of the process, as interruptions are necessary for the refurbishment of the tools. Understanding of how material transfer takes place is important in order to find new or improved solutions, in terms of lubrication and surface engineering, to prevent adhesion. Nevertheless, current research in high temperature tribology of aluminium, mainly in terms of material transfer mechanisms, is very limited, as many of the works focus on lubricated conditions and do not look into the fundamental interactions between aluminium alloys and tool steels. In this context, the aim of this work is to investigate the mechanisms behind the occurrence of aluminium alloy transfer onto tool steel during sliding at high temperature and in dry conditions. A hot-strip drawing tribometer was used to perform tests at room temperature, 300°C, 400°C, and 500°C, directly after solubilizing the aluminium alloy at 520°C. Two different topographies for the tool steel were used: ground and polished. Material transfer characterization was performed mainly through scanning electron microscopy. It was found that grinding marks (ground tool steel) and carbides (polished tool steel) act as initiation sites for the transfer to occur. Temperature plays a role on the growth mechanisms of the transfer films during sliding, as thermal softening of the aluminium alloy is the dominant factor in determining the growth direction of the transfer layers. A growth towards the trailing edge (shearing and smearing of the transferred aluminium) or a growth towards the leading edge (build-up of transferred aluminium, leading to a thicker and more localized transfer material).

[pt] Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a resistência à força cortante de vigas de concreto reforçado com barras de fibras de vidro e investigar a contribuição dos diferentes mecanismos de transferência do esforço cortante para a resistência final da viga. Um programa experimental foi conduzido, incluindo ensaios para: caracterização do material, para avaliar o efeito de pino, para avaliar o engrenamento dos agregados e, por fim, ensaios de flexão de quatro pontos em vigas. Diferentes parâmetros foram investigados, como a quantidade de barras longitudinais para o efeito de pino, dimensão máxima do agregado graúdo para engrenamento dos agregados e a presença de estribos para os ensaios de vigas. O monitoramento do desenvolvimento da fissura crítica foi realizado com auxílio de correlação de imagem digital (digital image correlation, DIC, em inglês). Os resultados mostraram que não foi evidenciada diferença no comportamento de efeito de pino e de engrenamento dos agregados através dos ensaios realizados. Para os ensaios de vigas, observou-se que todos os espécimes apresentaram ruptura por tração da diagonal crítica e, para vigas sem estribos, a ação do efeito de pino pareceu contribuir significativamente para a resistência ao cisalhamento após a fissura, quando a carga diminui e as deflexões aumentam, resultado do menor engrenamento dos agregados à medida que a fissura se abre. Foi observado que a presença de estribos aumentou em até três vezes a resistência ao cortante das vigas ensaiadas e que houve ruptura do estribo na parte da dobra. / [en] This work aims to evaluate the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams with glass fiber reinforced polymer bars and to investigate qualitatively the contribution of the different shear transfer mechanisms to the final strength of the beam. An experimental program was conducted, including material characterization, dowel action tests, push-off tests, and finally, four-point bending tests on beams. Different parameters were investigated, such as the number of longitudinal bars for dowel action effect, maximum size of the coarse aggregate for aggregate interlock and the presence of stirrups for the beam tests. The monitoring of the development of the critical crack was performed with the aid of digital image correlation (DIC). The results showed that there was no difference in the behavior of the dowel action effect and the aggregate interlock through the tests performed. For beam tests, it was observed that all the specimens exhibited a concrete diagonal tension failure and for beams without stirrups, dowel action seemed to provide significant contribution to the shear strength after the crack, when the load reduces and the deflections increases, resulting from the loss of aggregate interlock as the crack opens. It was also observed that the presence of stirrups increased up to three times the shear strength of the beams tested and that there was rupture of the stirrup at the bent region.

Étude de l'ébullition sur plaque plane en microgravité, application aux réservoirs cryogéniques des fusées Ariane V / Study of nucleate boiling in microgravity conditions, aplicated to the ArineV cryogenics tanks

Ce rapport de thèse porte sur une étude expérimentale et théorique de l'ébullition en microgravité. Les expériences furent réalisées en condition de gravité terrestre, en vol parabolique et en fusée-sonde. Les expériences en vol parabolique ont montré l'influence de divers paramètres sur le transfert thermique et ont mis en évidence les mécanismes contrôlant le transfert thermique. De l'écriture des équations gouvernant ces mécanismes et de l'identification des échelles caractéristiques, une corrélation permettant d'estimer le transfert de chaleur lors de l'ébullition en microgravité pour une large gamme de fluide est bâtie. L'expérience en fusée-sonde a permis d'étudier l'influence des gaz incondensables et notamment de la convection Marangoni sur le comportement de l'ébullition et sur le transfert thermique. / Between the different propulsion phases, the Ariane V rocket passes through microgravity periods and solar radiation can induce boiling in its cryogenics tanks. Experiments were performed during 6 parabolic flights and in a sounding rocket to study pool boiling in microgravity. In the parabolic flight experiments, the influence of pressure, subcooling and surface roughness was studied. It is showed that subcooling has a weak effect on microgravity boiling heat transfer, and that roughness is an important factor also in microgravity. Detailed results on the behavior of bubbles and on the superheated liquid layer show that the heat transfer mechanisms can be divided in two groups : the primary mechanisms which directly take energy from the wall and the secondary mechanisms which transport the energy stored in the fluid by the primary mechanisms, from the vicinity of the wall to the bulk liquid. The secondary mechanisms appear not to limit primary mechanism heat transfer which explains the weak influence of gravity on heat transfer. From the study of equations governing primary mechanisms and the definition of new scales, a correlation is built to predict heat transfer in microgravity for a wide variety of fluids. In the sounding rocket experiment, the influence of non-condensable gases was studied. The existence of two regimes of boiling heat transfer with non-condensable gas is established. The temperature in the primary bubble is directly measured and the influences of both Marangoni convection and non-condensable gas on both heat transfer and bubble growth are also considered.

Production et stockage d'énergie : de la DSSC au photo-accumulateur / Energy production and storage : from DSSC to a photo-accumulator

L’objectif de ce travail a été de mettre en place un système original capable de produire et stocker l’énergie à partir de la lumière dans un dispositif unique. Pour ce faire, nous avons choisi d’adapter l’électrode photo-sensible d’une DSSC sur un système d’accumulateur électrochimique. La première partie de ce travail a été de mettre en place la technique de spectroscopie EIS-λ, basée sur la spectroscopie d’impédance électrochimique couplée à un balayage en longueur d’onde de la lumière incidente. L’objectif de cette mesure est d’identifier et de quantifier les différents mécanismes de transfert électroniques, photo-dépendant ou non, ayant lieu à la surface de l’électrode photo-sensible, ainsi que les processus de désactivation des états excités des sensibilisateurs. Nous nous sommes ensuite penchés sur la recherche des conditions optimales d’utilisation de deux coadsorbants — l’acide bismethoxyphenyl phosphinique ou BMPP et l’acide chenodesoxycholique ou CDCA — avec le sensibilisateur de référence N719. Nous avons également quantifié leurs activités shield et anti-π-stacking grâce à la technique EIS-λ. Nous avons ainsi réalisé une DSSC présentant un rendement de photo-conversion de 8,3% en utilisant le co-adsorbant BMPP dans un ratio [co-ads]/[S] = 1, contre 7,2% dans les conditions de référence — avec le coadsorbant CDCA utilisé dans un ratio [co-ads]/[S] = 10. Par la suite, nous avons imaginé et synthétisé trois complexes de ruthénium hydrophiles originaux dont nous avons testé le pouvoir de photo-conversion dans des DSSC à électrolyte 100% aqueux, en présence des co-adsorbants sélectionnés. Ces systèmes ont permis de dépasser le pouvoir de photo-conversion du sensibilisateur N719, dans l’eau, avec un rendement maximal obtenu de 1,31%. Enfin, nous avons sélectionné la meilleure combinaison sensibilisateur / co-adsorbant afin de réaliser une électrode photo-sensible que nous avons implémentée dans un système original d’accumulateur électrochimique à base d’électrolytes aqueux. Le système ainsi mis en place constitue aujourd’hui le premier dispositif fonctionnel d’accumulateur 100% aqueux photo-rechargeable à partir d’une électrode mésoporeuse photo-sensibilisée / The aim of this work was to imagine and to develop a new system able to produce and store energy from sunlight in a single device. For this purpose, the photo-sensitive electrode of a DSSC has been adapted to an electrochemical accumulator. The first part of this work was to develop a new spectroscopic technique, called EIS-λ and based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined to incident light wavelength sweep. This technique has proved its capacity to identify and quantify the different mechanisms of electron transfer over the surface of the semiconducting material and their dependency to incident wavelength, together with the various deactivation processes of the excited state of the sensitizer. Then, we investigated the best conditions to use two different co-adsorbents — namely bis-methoxyphenylphosphinic acid, or BMPP, and chenodesoxycholic acid, or CDCA — with the reference sensitizer N719. The shield and anti-π-stacking activities of the two coadsorbents has been characterized using EIS-λ technique. DSSC with a photo-conversion yield of 8,3% has been prepared in the lab using BMPP in a ratio [co-ads]/[S] = 1 while reference conditions – namely with CDCA in a ratio [co-ads]/[S] = 10 — only gave 7,2%. Besides, we have designed and synthesized three original hydrophilic ruthenium complexes, then tested their photo-conversion properties in DSSC with 100% aqueous electrolytes. Such systems, with the selected co-adsorbents, allowed 1,31% photo-conversion yield to be obtained, which is two times larger than the efficiency exhibited by N719 in the same electrolyte conditions. Finally the best combination sensitizer / co-adsorbent has been selected to achieve a photo-sensitive electrode which has been implemented in an original electrochemical accumulator with aqueous electrolytes. This system represents the first functional device of a 100% aqueous accumulator, which is photo-reloadable with a photosensitized mesoporous electrode
