Design of Automotive Joints Using Response Surface Polynomials and Neural Networks

In the early design stages of a car body, a simplified model, which represents the constituent components of the car body by their performance characteristics, is used to optimize the overall car. The determined optimum performance characteristics of the components are used as performance targets to design these components. Since designers do not know the relation between the performance characteristics of the components and their dimensions and mass, this may lead to unreasonable performance targets for the components. Moreover, this process is inefficient because design engineers use empirical procedures to design the components that should meet these targets. To design the component more efficiently, design tools are needed to link the performance targets with the physical design variables of the components. General methodologies for developing two design tools for the design of car joints are presented. These tools can be viewed as translators since they translate the performance characteristics of the joint into its dimensions and vice-versa. The first tool, called translator A, quickly predicts the stiffness and the mass of a given joint. The second tool, called translator B, finds the dimensions and mass of the most efficient joint design that meets given stiffness requirements, packaging, manufacturing and styling constraints. Putting bulkheads in the joint structure is an efficient way to increase stiffness. This thesis investigates the effect of transverse bulkheads on the stiffness of an actual B-pillar to rocker joint. It also develops a translator A for the B-pillar to rocker joint with transverse bulkheads. The developed translator A can quickly predict the stiffness of the reinforced joint. Translator B uses optimization to find the most efficient, feasible joint design that meets given targets. Sequential Linear Programming (SLP) and the Modified Feasible Direction (MFD) method are used for optimization. Both Response Surface Polynomial (RSP) translator B and Neural Network (NN) translator B are developed and validated. Translator A is implemented in an MS-Excel program. Translator B is implemented in a MATHEMATICA program. The methodology for developing translator B is demonstrated on the B-pillar to rocker joint of an actual car. The convergence of the optimizer is checked by solving the optimization problem many times starting from different initial designs. The results from translator B are also checked against FEA results to ensure the feasibility of the optimum designs. By observing the optimum designs and by performing parametric studies for the effect of some important design variables on the joint mass we can establish guidelines for design of joints. / Master of Science

A socio-constructive approach to the training of language practitioners at the University of the Free State

Published Article / This paper describes the training of language practitioners at the University of the Free State in the light of recent developments in Translation Studies, namely the tendency of internationalising ideas about translation, as well as the enlarging of Western Translation Theory by integrating non-Western thought about translation. Starting from earlier ideas of translation training, the move towards socio-constructive approach as proposed by Kiraly (2000) is described. It is indicated how the socio-constructive approach can benefit the training of language practitioners by empowering the learner to act responsibly, autonomously and competently. The socio-constructive approach provides not only an epistemological basis for the development of knowledge-building communities, but also a variety of tools that can be used to promote and pursue learning in such communities.

GPS Translator Record and Interface System (TRIS)

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 29-November 02, 1990 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Global Positioning System (GPS) translator signals have been used to track U.S Navy Trident missile test launches for the past 15 years. Absolute position accuracies of better than 20 meters in real-time and 8 meters in post mission have been consistently demonstrated. Flight qualified GPS translators 40 cubic inches in size have been developed for the U.S. Army Exoatmospheric Re-entry Vehicle Interceptor Subsystem (ERIS) program and are currently available for use by U.S. and allied government test ranges. More widespread use of GPS translators is constrained, however, by the great expense and size of the custom ground equipment currently used to acquire GPS translator signals and compute the position and velocity of the vehicle. To address this problem, the U.S. Air Force Western Space and Missile Center (WSMC) placed 3S under contract to design a lower-cost GPS translator processor based mainly on using commercial telemetry equipment. This paper describes how a working prototype was constructed to demonstrate the feasibility of the Translator Record and Interface System (TRIS). This prototype shows that TRIS can be built from a combination of commercially-available telemetry equipment, GPS equipment developed for the U.S. Air Force Range Applications Joint Program Office (RAJPO), and a few elements of custom equipment.

Validation of the Accuracy of RxLator, an iPhone-based English-to-Mandarin Translator

Class of 2014 Abstract / Specific Aims: Determine the accuracy of RxLator, an iPhone-based English to Mandarin Translator. Methods: Subjects (graduate chemistry students at Soochow University Taiwan, N = 27) individually listened to 25 RxLator medication directions in Mandarin. Each subject verbally told the translator the meaning of each direction, and the investigator recorded the translated responses on paper. At the end of the session, each subject identified which directions required editing. These directions were then played for an additional subject. Main Results: Of the 25 directions, 17 were easily understood the first time subjects heard them. Of the 6 directions that required edits, the subjects' confusion was caused by a single word found in 4 of the directions. The remaining 2 more difficult directions caused confusion due to other reasons. Overall, the subjects were confident in understanding the majority of the medication directions. Conclusion: With few exceptions, the iPhone-based English-to-Mandarin Translator seems to be accurate for medication directions. This application is the first mobile, electronic device to ensure an accurate, convenient method to translate medication directions from English to Mandarin.

The subtitling tasks and project were carried out with Ooona, an online subtitling software, and as part of an optional course on gender and sexuality at an undergraduate university program in Translation. The data collected are based on the Spanish subtitles produced by the students from audiovisual content originally in English, as well as on questionnaires and reports that they completed after subtitling. The results reveal how cloud-based subtitling software is a useful tool for students to position themselves regarding online video content online, as well as how the audiovisual representation of queer characters allows students to reflect on aspects of the gender/sex system when they must transfer linguistic content that is rooted in different socio-cultural systems.

Denna uppsats beskriver projektet Mobile Translator vilket även blev produktens arbetsnamn. Projektets huvudsakliga syfte var en ny version av den tidigare produkten Paratus Pocket Translator för Windows med bibehållen funktionalitet. Projektet har resulterat i en Windows applikation baserad på moderna tekniker som tillfredställer Saabs behov och önskemål. / The company Saab AB in Karlstad has developed the product Paratus Pocket Translator to help paramedics communicate with patients who do not speak the same language. This product is only available on an older mobile platform that has since been replaced. Saab is now in need of a rewrite of this product on a more modern platform. This dissertation describes the project Mobile Translator, which also became the products working title. The project's main aim was a new version of the previous product Paratus Pocket Translator for Windows with maintained functionality. The project has resulted in a Windows application based on modern technologies that satisfies Saab's needs and requests.

GPS: THE LOGICAL TOOL FOR PRECISION TRACKING IN SPACE

This need for exact time and space-position information (TSPI) persists whether developing and testing space weapons or locating the precise position of intelligence-gathering satellites. Because this is a worldwide tracking requirement, the use of conventional tracking techniques such as radar is precluded. Fortunately the Global Positioning System (GPS) is now in place and can provide the tracking information required. GPS offers two techniques for tracking space vehicles. A GPS receiver can be installed on the vehicle to determine the position that is then relayed to a ground terminal, or a GPS frequency translator can be used to compute the vehicle position at the master groundsite. Since both techniques have been proven satisfactory, the specific tracking requirement determines the method selected. For the flight tests of the Exoatmospheric Reentry-Vehicle Interceptor Subsystem (ERIS), the GPS frequency translator technique is used. A GPS frequency translator is installed on the target (a reentry-vehicle launched on a Minuteman from Vandenberg), and a translator is also installed on the ERIS, which is launched from Meck Island in the Kwajalein Atoll. The GPS frequency translator approach was chosen for these tests for a variety of reasons, the most important of which were the limited instrumentation space on the target and interceptor, the extreme dynamics of the interceptor, the tracking accuracy required, and the range at which the operation must be tracked. For the tracking of orbiting satellites, a GPS receiver can be flown on the satellite with its derived position information continuously stored. This data can then be dumped as the satellite passes over a selected groundsite.

The DGT provides translated GPS tracking capability combined with transmission of telemetry at rates of up to 10 Mbps with optional encoding and/or encryption. This integrated approach to GPS tracking and telemetry results in a significant reduction in hardware size and cost compared to a segregated approach. The TGRS includes a ground-processing unit that provides real time processing of both the GPS and telemetry portions of the DGT transmission.
