Challenges of Multimodal Transport Services:The Case of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise : Ethiopia- Sweden-Denmark and UK trade routes operation

Abstract Purpose: is to identify the challenges of multimodal transport service of ESLSE in the Europe trade routes operation from origin up to destination and to analyze the contribution of network partners to ESLSE solving these challenges.   Design\Data collection\Approach: This thesis relied on qualitative research design in order to identify the key challenges of multimodal transport services and to show how the network partners contribute to solving these challenges. Moreover, to achieve the objective of the study, semi structure interviews were used, and the responses from 14 experts were analyzed.   Theoretical framework: The theoretical base and concepts are used to determine the theoretical boundaries of the research. It provides an overview of the literature that exists in the challenges of multimodal transport services. The theoretical framework firstly encompassed the logistics performance and personnel, followed by the description of multimodal transport services, customs facilitation, ICT, infrastructure, network partner integration and port administration. Lastly, theoretical synthesis is developed that are identified from the theory to demonstrate the interrelationship between individual concepts.   Findings: The findings of this study revealed that multimodal transport service was impacted by a number of challenges even if the network partners contributed some solutions. The results of the study showed that the lack of skilled logistics personnel; poor ICT system; lack of integration between network partners; lack of effective infrastructure; inadequate and ineffective capacity of trucks; material theft; corruption; security risk; lack of prompt response in the operation between network partners; monopoly of the operation by ESLSE; and lack of quality of transported cargo are the main challenges for multimodal transport services. Managerial implication: For managers of network partners, it is recommended that they should be aware that the challenge of multimodal transport service is the result of poor ICT systems; lack of integration between network partners; lack of effective infrastructure; lack of skilled logistic personnel; inadequate and ineffective capacity of trucks; material theft; corruption; security risk; lack of quality of transported cargo; and lack of prompt response in the operation between the network partners Hence, they should take action to solve the problems by integrating with shipping agents and steering committees such as customers office, transport minister, and maritime authority. Moreover, the shipping agents managers can use the results of the study to enhance their contribution in order to solve the challenges of multimodal transport services by communicating with the ESLSE.   Limitations: The small sample size without adequately diverse geographical spread and sample of shipping agents and dry ports since the study is only limited to Europe trade routes and it did not take in to consideration other continents like Africa and Asia which could have given additional information on the topic. The sample of shipping agent and dry ports was limited with 3 out of 11 and 3 out of 7 respectively.   Originality\Value: This thesis is one of the first to analyze the challenges of multimodal transport in the case of Ethiopia to Europe trade operation by interviewing both the ESLSE and shipping agents.

Analyse spectrale et comportement asymptotique des solutions de quelques modèles d’équations de transport / Spectral analysis and asymptotic behavior of solutions of some transport equations

Cette thèse est consacrée à la théorie spectrale de quelques opérateurs de transport et le comportement asymptotique (pour les temps grands) des solutions des problèmes de Cauchy gouvernés par ces derniers. Dans la première partie, on s'est intéressé aux propriétés spectrales des opérateurs d'advection et de transport des neutrons dans le cadre multidimensionnel pour des conditions aux limites générales. Après avoir établi un résultat de compacité de type lemmes de moyenne indispensable dans notre analyse, on a donné entre autre une description fine du spectre asymptotique de l'opérateur de transport. Ce travail a été complété par l'étude des propriétés de régularité et le comportement asymptotique de la solution du problème de Cauchy gouverné par l'opérateur de transport étudié précédemment pour des conditions aux limites de type bounce-back plus un opérateur compact dans l'espace L^1. Ensuite, on a étudié le caractère bien posé et le comportement asymptotique de la solution d'une équation de transport des neutrons avec des sections efficaces non bornées. Contrairement à la première partie, l'analyse de ce problème nécessite l'usage d'une théorie de perturbation de Miyadera-Voigt pour les opérateurs non bornés. La dernière partie de ce travail porte sur un problème linéaire issu d'un modèle introduit en 1974 par Lebowitz et Rubinow décrivant la prolifération d'une population de cellules structuré par l'âge et la longueur du cycle. Notre analyse a porté sur le cas où la longueur du cycle maximale est infinie. / This thesis is devoted to the spectral theory and the time asymptotic behavior of the solution to Cauchy problems governed by various transport operators. In the first part, we discussed the spectral properties of streaming and transport operators in finite bodies with general boundary conditions. After establishing a compactness result essential to our analysis, we gave a fine description of the asymptotic spectrum of the transport operator. We also derive the regularity and the asymptotic behavior of the solution to Cauchy problem governed by the transport operator supplemented by bounce-back boundary conditions plus a compact operator in the space L^1. In the second part, we discussed the well-posedness and the asymptotic behavior of the solution to Cauchy problem governed by a singular transport operator. Unlike the first part, the analysis of this problem requires the use of Miyadera-Voigt perturbation theory for unbounded operators. In the last part of this work, a Cauchy problem governed by a linear operator introduced by Lebowitz and Rubinow describing a proliferating cell population structured by age and the cycle length was considered. Here our analysis was devoted to the case where the maximum cycle length is infinite.

Analyse mathématique de quelques équations intervenant en dynamique des populations et en cinétique des gaz / Mathematical analysis of some equations arising in the dynamics of populations and the kinetic of gas

Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse portent sur l’analyse mathématique de quelques équations intervenant en dynamique des populations et en cinétique des gaz. On s’est intéressé tout d’abord à une version non linéaire d’un modèle dû à Lebowitz et Rubinow en 1974 pour décrire une population cellulaire. On a établi des résultats d’existence et d’unicité aussi bien les solutions au sens de Bénilan que les solutions fortes du problème d’évolution correspondant. Cette analyse a été étendue ensuite à une perturbation de ce modèle par un opérateur non linéaire et pour des conditions aux limites locales et non locales. Cette partie a été complétée par l’étude des résultats d’existence des solutions du problème stationnaire correspondant. Le second volet de ce travail traite de l’existence des solutions d’une version non linéaire stationnaire d’un modèle dû à Rotenberg en 1983. Le dernier chapitre de ce travail à été consacré à l’analyse spectrale d’une équation de transport neutronique faisant intervenir des opérateurs de collision élastiques et inélastiques. Le problème d’évolution correspondant ainsi que le comportement asymptotique (pour les grands temps) de la solution ont été considéré pour des conditions aux limites périodiques. / The work presented in this thesis deals with the mathematical analysis of some equations arising in the dynamics of populations and the kinetic of gas. First, we focused on a non-linear version of a model introduced by Lebowitz and Rubinow in 1974 to describe a cells population. We discussed the existence and the uniqueness of solutions of both Bénilan’s solution and strong solutions to the corresponding evolution equation. This analysis was subsequently extended to a perturbation of this model by a nonlinear operator for local and non-local boundary conditions. This part was supplemented by the study of existence of solutions to the corresponding stationary problem. In chapter 5, we discuss the existence of solutions to a stationary nonlinear version of a model describing the evolution of a cells population introduced by Rotenberg in 1983. The last chapter of this work is devoted to the spectral analysis of a neutron transport equation involving elastic and inelastic collision operators. The corresponding evolution problem as well as the asymptotic behavior (for large times) of the solution was considered for periodic boundary conditions.

An analysis of a transport operator´s job description My degree work is centred on the problems of a transport operator´s job in a forwarding agency. The introduction provides an explanation of a term of "dispatch service" and explains why logistics is so important in transport. Then there is a description of the transport development after 1990 and the changes transport had to undergo in the time of globalization. The main part of the work deals with the operator´s working procedure from an offer to a demand, an order and other actions to the final realization. A model example is given to represent an actual transporting process. The work also states conditions under which transport is executed, for example payment terms and terms of delivery. Next chapters outline the way of calculation, give a detailed description of collecting service (which is implemented within the bounds of CS Expres system) and of storing problems including the introduction of bar codes in stores and possibilities of logistic service extension. The conclusion is focused on the firm developing strategy.

多式運送所生之種種法律問題,其複雜程度往往不下於單式運送所面臨者,然而,與單式運送相較,多式運送之國際統一立法運動之命運卻未免多舛,舉例而言,針對多式運送所制定之1980年公約,即使係經過冗長之討論及折衝後始通過,但是望穿秋水仍等不到生效的到來,而多式運送統一國際規範之需求,在現代運送貨櫃化以及第三方物流興起之推波助瀾下,仍不斷地節節升高。 在這樣的大環境氛圍下,使得工作小組於UNCITRAL草案之討論過程中,不得不面對此一現實:大多數之海上貨物運送多係戶對戶運送,而戶對戶運送,又多以多式運送為之。因此,就UNCITRAL草案之適用範圍是否擴張至包括戶對戶運送,而其利弊得失為何,與會者就此紛紛各抒己見,表達自己之看法,工作小組最後乃決定:UNCITRAL草案應適用於涉及海上運送之戶對戶運送。 工作小組此一決定,事實上對於多式運送國際統一規範之實現,可說是邁出了一大步,但此結果,可說是「無心差柳柳成蔭」,蓋UNCITRAL草案之定位本旨,係在取代海牙、海牙威士比規則,成為一個全新之海上貨物運送公約,但工作小組決定將草案適用範圍擴張至戶對戶運送之結果,使得UNCITRAL草案對於絕大多數之多式運送亦將有所規範,因此,稱UNCITRAL草案為多式運送之新統一規範,亦不為過。當然,UNCITRAL草案本質上既係一海上貨物運送公約,則受草案規範之多式運送,亦必須有一部運送途程為海上運送,方符合UNCITRAL草案第1條規定之運送契約定義。 涉及海上運送之多式運送既有UNCITRAL草案之適用,此時MTO亦被視為運送人,而應負擔UNCITRAL草案中運送人之注意義務、賠償責任及舉證責任等;而UNCITRAL草案為解決與其他國際公約之衝突問題,採行了「最低限度網狀責任制」,但是,該最低限度網狀責任制卻抹煞了需要多式運送國際統一規範之根本理由:為多式運送法律關係帶來確定性。UNCITRAL草案不但未達成該目標,反而進一步導致多式運送法律關係趨於不穩定且無法預測,也因此,UNCITRAL草案就對多式運送之規範而言,仍有值得改進之處。

Analýza podmínek kabotáže v silniční nákladní dopravě ve vybraném státě EU / Analysis of Conditions for Cabotage in Road Haulage in Selected EU Country

The thesis describes conditions for carrying out cabotage in road freight transport, in comparison to current and past development at the EU level, and in transport policy of the EU described in the primary law. The most current changes at the field of cabotage are a good precondition for the future growth of this type of transport. The issue of cabotage could be described in three groups of topics, the first being the unified EU regulations of cabotage and conditions set for carrying out cabotage, the second concerns topics, that are similar in every EU country due to harmonization of national law, for example the payment of VAT, admission to the occupancy of road haulier or technical conditions for vehicles. The third group deals with matters that are different in every EU country, e.g. toll systems. Carrying out cabotage is therefore to be adjusted to all aforesaid conditions, which have a direct influence to the economical background of cabotage transports.
