No. of bitstreams: 1 APARECIDO BARBOSA.pdf: 1566220 bytes, checksum: d9e5ef9b9d92b9316ddade2895e27486 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-12-12 / This study aims to reconstruct and analyze the discourse and representations regarding the practices and religious beliefs of the Brazilian people, present in the writings of the French traveler Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, who was in Brazil from 1816 to 1822. Analyzing his works that record and study Brazilian flora and fauna, written in the first half of the nineteenth century, it is possible to identify between the lines, the marginal observations, the deliberate insinuations, the description of places, customs and people, a whole world view of the author, unfolds in a partial and provocative portrait of the multiple dimensions of Brazilian society in formation. We emphasize, above all, the image built on the following religious dimensions: the life of the secular and religious clergy, traditional and popular Catholicism, popular religiosity, churches and sacred arts, religious festivals, processions and holy days. Constructed images that capture a process of identity formation in the mediation of the vision of the other. The richness of travelers' reports is the source of studies on the formation of Brazil. As an analysis perspective, we chose Cultural History, as it offers conditions for the interpretation and evaluation of the selected sections of the traveler's works. From a bibliographical review, we used as reference in this study a set of papers that dealt with the travel literature, particularly those that took as source the reports of Saint-Hilaire. We study the travel literature, seeking to highlight its political and economic matrices, its representative, cultural and historical discourses. We suggest an analysis of the reports produced by the traveler from the concept of "representation" discussed by Roger Chartier, that is, a conception of the other from his cultural world. But we also incorporate the concept of rhetoric of "otherness" used by Fran?ois Hartog, who, in approaching the "other" of "us", tries to perceive their differences and translate them into the language of the other. Both notions helped us to think about the meaning of the narratives and expressions of the religious world present in the speech of Saint-Hilaire. Analyzing them in the European, French and Brazilian historical context, the traveler lived and wrote his works, as well as the political-religious and cultural relationship between Church and State. The use of the aforementioned notions ended up affecting not only the results we have arrived at, but also the way forward. As a result the realization of the inescapable character of religion and its importance to the understanding of the complex processes of our cultural formation. Regarding the paths of analysis, we find that focusing on religion opens the perspective of articulating dimensions of reality that other studies avoid doing, for example, the public and private relationship, sacred and profane, Church and State, religion and culture. After the contextualization and critical analysis of Saint-Hilaire's discourse on this religiosity, we discuss his reports as a source of research, and as a problem, the possibility of transforming this representative discourse as a translation of that religiosity into an instrument for religious and cultural study in the period nineteenth-century and contemporary.

The present study attempts to comprehend how biotic and abiotic factors in forests located in the territory of Paraná were perceived, experienced, and described by travelers at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The set of documents used in the investigation include three travel accounts: one by Captain Nestor Borba (1875); one by lieutenant José Cândido da Silva Muricy (1892); and one by the journalist Jayme Ballão (1920). The study focuses on assessing the sociopolitical and cultural roles played by the travelers while in Paraná, analyzing how the forests‘ characteristics were described, and examining the feelings, sensations, perceptions, and/or discussions the experience of the forest aroused in the authors. In order to construct the theoretical and methodological approach, this paper engages with concepts of environmental history, emphasizing the analysis on corporality and the sensitive relationship between humans and the environment.

Sarah, Åkerblom January 2013 (has links)
This essay contains a discoursive analysis of fifteen travel reports from five of the largest papers in Sweden. The travel reports contains recaptions from wildlife tourism experiences were the predators are the main target, or at least one of the main targets. Seven of the reports are from Sweden and eight of them from Russia, Rumania, Finland, Turkey and the United States. Predators in this essay aims to those in Sweden called ”the big five”, these are: bears, wolves, lynxes , wolverines and golden eagles. The purpose was to study the general but also divergent discourses in the reporters perceptions of wildlife tourism with focus on predators in these travel reports. The theories used in the thesis is about the ”tourist gaze” and the ”post-modern tourist”. The questions in my study have been formed based on these two theories and reads as follows: What was the unique object that the reporters wanted to experience? What specific symbols did the reporters highlight as important to the overall experience? Which parts of the experience were new to the reporters? What evidence did the reporters highlight to prove that the experiences were authentic? How did the postmodern tourist reveal itself in the travel reports? I came to the conclusion that the unique object that reporters wanted to experience were the predators, in cases when the predators were the only purpose of the trip. When the case was otherwise, the unique object contained of other cultural or natural values. The symbols that were important to the experience were different cultural and natural values that mainly focused on wilderness and rural traits. In cases where the predators were not the unique object they were rather symbols for the untamed, wild nature. The lifestyle and characteristics of the hosts in the form of locals and staff were also important symbols. Parts of the various experience rooms and the hosts natural lifestyles were new to the reporters and differed from the reporters’ modern lifestyle. The characteristics of the predators were symbols for the experience’s authenticity Other symbols were the hosts' stories about the place, about the predators and their everyday lives. While local food and other forms of local cultural expressions were also important symbols. The postmodern tourist spoke throughout the travel reports. This type of predator tourism can be considered to be very well adapted to the post-modern tourist. To watch and track wild predators in their natural environment is very suitable for the post-modern tourist's ideas about seeking out the authentic and natural along with a small group of travelers. The reporters consciously disassosiated themselves from the great hordes of mass tourists, highlighted the natural and authentic characteristics of hosts and experienceroom, something that tells that the postmodern tourist used the touristic gaze to look at and retell their experience.

Manske, Maike 19 December 2013 (has links)
This Franco-German analysis examines the Baltic Sea region as a center for cultural exchangebased on German and French travel reports from 1750 to 1815 in a comparative perspective. The objective is to examine the countries around the Baltic Sea as places of encounter fortravelers and to raise the awareness of historical travel research and research of culturalexchange for the subject ‘space’. This approach scrutinizes several forms of German andFrench imaginations of nature, sea shore and different forms of urbanity, but also theperception and reception of identities and alterities, the consolidation and the departure ofstereotypes as well as the possibilities and limits of cultural transfer processes by travelling.Furthermore, this approach allows to gain a deeper understanding of the progress of complexphenomena such as, ‘percipience', 'contemplation' and 'delineating' of foreign cultures in aperiod which was marked by a radical change in socio-political and cultural thinking.

Assim apresenta-se aqui uma análise reflexiva a respeito de vários assuntos pertinentes a temática de estudos da cultura, história da África e das imagens deixadas aos historiadores, por meio das fontes, do período da expansão marítima / Inserted in the context of discussions on the so-called Ultramarine and the Atlantic World, region called by the Portuguese “Guinea of the Cape Verde” admittedly showed unique characteristics since the first contact during the expansionary period. However, the concentration on the study of ethnic groups in the region seems to have been overshadowed by curiosity and the potential interactions of various kinds, among Europeans, Africans and Arabs generated. Thus, this dissertation presents a study that aims to take a step toward filling this gap left open. To this end, the goal here is to contextualize the region during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and its place within the world of logic Overseas. With the proposed main promote an analysis of one of the best known ethnic groups period, mandingas. This proposal use the reports written three travelers Cape Verdeans who traded in the region of decades. / The relationship between Brazil and India is known for centuries when mentioned as mercantile rote among Europe, Americas and Asia in the colonial times. This resource seeks to analyse indianess in touristic capabilities between Brazil and India. The flow provoke motion and circulation of people, craft creation, ideas and information. We may added to this source the consistency of indianess which can be comprehended as one gram of repertoires that try to fix up as well as exterminate some values ineherent in India through the tourism industry. It’s important to say that indianness also is associated into a politic discussion related to an indentity circulation movements inside and outside of India. This resource explore the relevance thematic through four dimenssion point of view: 1) advertising of comercial turistic packages by brazilian travel agencies; 2) reports by brazilian tourists people who travel to India; 3) Fiction narrative related to incidents that happen in India and United States, which country embrace a significant Indian population; 4) Travel objects brought as souvinirs or markets. It’s blatant that yoga cross this statement in some way smoothly, as a reserve of information about India, as well as a kind of pratice that has becoming a transnationalized attracting a large number of tourists from all over the world those who are looking for the headquarters of the yoga.
