The relationship between muscle activity and shock transmission during treadmill runningKeegan, Sean J. January 2000 (has links)
Ground contact results in the generation of a heel-strike transient that propagates through the musculoskeletal system. The inability to attenuate the heel-strike-induced shock wave is a possible factor in the development of various gait pathologies and overuse-type injuries, such as knee osteoarthrosis, stress fractures, and low back pain. It is hypothesized that prolonged running will result in increased shock transmission at the tibia and sacroiliac joint during conditions of controlled velocity/stride mechanics. Subjects performed an extended running trial for 25-minutes at 75% HRReserve. EMG data of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and tibialis anterior and accelerometer data from the tibial tuberosity and sacrum were recorded at one-minute intervals. Accelerometer data at the tibial tuberosity did show a significant increase during the run protocol. Linear regression of EMG frequency and tibial shock also demonstrated a significant relationship. An extended running protocol will lead to increases in tibia shock acceleration independent of stride mechanics. / School of Physical Education

Physiological and psychological responses to treadmill and cycle ergometer exercise testing in men and women with COPDHolm, Siri Margrete 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the physiological and psychological responses to linear work rate treadmill and cycle ergometer exercise tests in men and women with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 12 men and 8 women with COPD completed one treadmill and one cycle cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) in randomized order. Before and after each CPET, the particpants completed measures of Self-Efficacy (SE), State-Anxiety, and Arousal. No significant differences were found between the physiological responses to cycle and treadmill CPET in either men or women. SE increased significantly as a result of the first test, regardless of exercise modality and sex. State anxiety was significantly reduced after the first test, whereas there was no significant change in arousal state. In conclusion there were no differences between the physiological and psychological responses to treadmill and cycle CPET in men and women with COPD.

Análise das respostas fisiológicas em mulheres submetidas a diferentes protocolos de inclinação na esteira / Analysis of physiological responses in women undergoing different protocols of treadmill inclinationsJaqueline Tavano 10 March 2010 (has links)
Walking and running are forms of exercise that promote changes in lifestyle, but there are many controversies about the possible benefits and risks regarding the walking or running when performed at different slopes. This study aimed to determine the anaerobic threshold and to evaluate and compare the physiological responses during continuous exercise (45 minutes) with intensity corresponding to anaerobic threshold run on the treadmill in terms of positive slope (+10%), level (0%) and negative slope (-10%). The study included 9 women aged between 21 and 31 years old, physically active. First they performed increasing intensity tests to determine the intensity corresponding to anaerobic threshold on each slope. After determining these parameters the continuous protocols were performed in intensity corresponding to anaerobic threshold for 45 minutes. The results showed that the speed average (\'+ OU -\' standard deviation) at level the anaerobic threshold was 6.56 \'+ OU -\' 0.53 km/h, atthe positive slope was 5.44 \'+ OU -\' 0.53 km/h (with a percentage reduction of 17.07% over the level) and the negative slope was 7.22 \'+ OU -\' 0.67 km/h (with high percentage of 9.14% over the level). In continuous protocols was observed that the values of ventilatory variables were more elevated for the protocol with positive slope and the heart rate showed only significant difference until the 15th minute of exercise between protocols with positive slope and with negative slope. But despite this, the volunteers reported no difficulty in motor gesture in exercises. It was conclude that even with the attempt to run at ideal speed for each condition the cardiovascular and metabolic responses are different, especially between the protocol with positive slope and with negative slope. This study showed important points that should be taken into account in the choice of protocol used in physical training in individuals with different physical conditions when they propose different running speeds and inclinations of the treadmill.

The effect on the self-selected gait velocity caused by the subjects’ position when walking on a self-paced dual-belt treadmill in a virtual reality environment while performing a color-word Stroop task: a pilot studyLorentzen, Line Harboe, Fleckner, Lisbeth Dauerhøj January 2018 (has links)
Background: When people walk while performing a cognitive dual-task, a decrease in gait velocity will occur because of the demand for some of the same cognitive resources. However, in a previous study they found an increase instead of a decrease in gait velocity when subjects walked on a self-paced treadmill while performing a color-word Stroop task. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine if the increase found in gait velocity in the previous study was a consequence of the subjects’ position. Additionally, it was investigated whether real-time feedback about the subjects’ position could substitute the lack of a reference point. Method: Position and gait velocity was measured in twelve healthy subjects during a trial consisting of eight control conditions and eight different interventions. Results: A significant difference was found in gait velocity between the interventions where the accelerations-line was moved furthest to the front and back (IzerolineA, IzerolineB) and in position between the original intervention and one with a neutral zone (Iorginal1, Ineutralzone). No differences were found in position or velocity with any of the feedback systems. Conclusion: From the results it could be concluded that the increase in gait velocity was a consequence of the subjects positioning themselves further in the forward direction on the treadmill. No conclusions could be drawn with the feedback systems.

Here we studied the effects of daily forced exercise in a treadmill and of daily stress (because forced exercise involves a degree of stress) during 2 or 8 weeks on different types of memory in male Wistar rats. The memory tests were: habituation of exploration in an open field, object recognition and spatial memory in Morris water maze. After these experiments we also tried to verify the physical exercise capacity to revert the memory deficit caused by maternal deprivation, procedure that causes a memory deficit already reported, by means of the inhibitory avoidance test. Daily footshock stress enhanced habituation learning after 2 but not after 8 weeks; it hindered both short- (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) of the recognition task after 2 weeks but only STM after 8 weeks; and had no effect on the spatial task after neither 2 or 8 weeks. The exercise protocol also enhanced habituation in the open field after 2 but not 8 weeks; it hindered STM and LTM in the recognition task after 2 but not at 8 weeks; and it enhanced one important measure of spatial learning after 8 weeks (latency to escape) but not other measures. In relation of the animals that was submitted to maternal deprivation we verified that the exercise is capable to revert the deficit of STM and LTM in inhibitory avoidance test and of STM in object recognition test, but don’t have any effect on the prejudice of LTM in object recognition and in spatial memory verify using the Morris water maze test. Thus, the physical exercise had a positive influence on memory and, additionally, it can be seen like one therapeutic strategy to reverts some memory deficits.

Over the past few years the number of elderly people has increased in the world, therefore it is necessary to search therapies that ameliorate age-related deficits as well as elucidate the mechanisms involved in this process. Physical exercise has been suggested as an important non-pharmacological approach to alleviate the age-related decline. Furthermore, recent studies have suggested a relationship between the process of brain aging and imbalance of epigenetic mechanisms, however, these data are not conclusive. It is well described that prefrontal cortex is involved in higher functions like attention, decision making and working memory. Then, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two exercise protocols (single session and daily moderate exercise) on the modulation of epigenetic markers in the prefrontal cortex from Wistar rats of 3- and 21- months-old. Animals were submitted to single session protocol (20 minutes) or the daily moderate exercise (20 minutes for 14 days), and 1hour after the last exercise session animals were euthanized. Prefrontal cortex was dissected out and acetylation of H4, the content of DNA methyl transferase (DNMT1 and DNMT3B), as well as histone methyltransferase H3K27 activity were analyzed. Results will be presented in the full version.
