An examination of the role of trade unions: A case study of SATAWU'S HIV programmes in the trucking industry. .

Lebese, Catherine Salaminah 28 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number : 9904829N - MA research report - School of Social Science - Faculty of Humanities / This research examines a possible welfare role of transport trade unions in the face of HIV/AIDS, particularly in the trucking industry. It uses SATAWU as a case study to see what the union, as a transport union, is doing to fight the spread of HIV in the industry. This study was motivated by a lack of previous research on the subject and also the claim of some studies that truck drivers are partly responsible for the spread of HIV in rural Southern Africa. The research was done through in-depth interviews with SATAWU officials, members of the Road Freight Association, truck drivers and other stakeholders. The main argument in this research is that although government has policies and programmes in place to fight the spread of HIV, there are certain things the unions can do to help seeing that they have more influence on the workers and they have easier access to them. The study examines programmes that are already in place and what is still lacking especially in relation to union involvement. The research also investigates union involvement in existing programmes and establishes what truck drivers and their families think should be done to fight the scourge and its aftermath. SATAWU remains remotely involved despite the spread of the scourge among truckers and the effects thereof on the family. Truckers remain vulnerable and so are their families.

Trade union responses to participatory management: a case study

Buhlungu, Maxwell Sakhela 30 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of trade union responses to participatory management in South Africa. In examining the above question, it seeks to establish whether Weber's notion of bureaucracy and Michels' "iron law of oligarchy" provide a useful theoretical framework for understanding these responses by unions. The thesis also explores the possibilities of worker participation in which unions (and their members) benefit without losing the ability to represent worker's collective interests. A study of the Ghana National Association of Teachers' programmes and its implications for membership commitment

Boh, Johnson Kwaku January 2016 (has links)
This study seeks to understand the implications of the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ (GNAT) programmes on members, and to investigate the perception of members regarding their commitment to the union. The period, 1995 to 2014 was chosen because it marked the era of fragmentation of GNAT, and the formation of other teacher-unions which broke the monopoly of GNAT as the sole teachers’ union in Ghana. The main objective of the study is to examine the implications of member commitment on GNAT programmes. Specifically, the study intends to investigate the perceptions of satisfaction, participation and loyalty of union members. It also attempts to examine the responses of the union to challenges within the organization. The study was based on interviews of key informants and a survey of members and former members of GNAT. Structured questionnaires were used as instruments. Data Analysis was by the application of Excel and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Presentations are displayed by graphs, frequency tables and pictorials. In order to understand commitment of respondents, the survey measures members’ satisfaction, participation and loyalty to GNAT. These variables are related to programmes, hence questions on variables were asked in relation to programmes. This study has found out that GNAT membership decline can be partially explained by decline in levels of member participation and satisfaction with programmes. The study, has however noted that despite members’ dissatisfaction with GNAT programmes, the majority of them are still committed to the union. One possible reason for the high loyalty of members could be the value that they attach to the union. The study therefore concludes that the members' perception is not, by itself, a sufficient variable for understanding the union’s decline. The study recommends that the communication system of GNAT be improved. It also recommends that due to changing composition of membership with respect to age and qualifications, there is need to broaden the professional development of members especially those in leadership positions by fashioning programmes to meet their needs. There is also need to engage members in establishing the training needs in the Ghana National Association of Teachers that would be included in the training programmes in order to make them more attractive.

The evolution of the industrial relations function in the National Health Service, 1974-80

Crum, Glynis A. January 1983 (has links)
Circular HM (72) issued by the DHSS in September 1972 set out the importance to the National Health Service of the establishment of a comprehensive approach to the development of the personnel function by the reorganised hospital authorities. The circular placed the responsibility for "effective personnel management" on the shoulders of line management and stressed the "supportive role" of the Personnel Officer. The future importance of the Industrial Relations function in the reorganised service was clearly not anticipated, and it is now evident that the demands and constraints experienced by Personnel Officers have produced important changes in the comprehensive nature of their role - in many cases industrial relations has become their primary responsibility. The period 1974 until 1980 was one of major change and pressure, and the growing awareness of structural faults in the National Health Service. In 1975 Lord McCarthy was appointed to investigate the continued functioning of Whitley Council machinery, and in 1976 Sir Alec Merrisan was commissioned to consider the working of the National Health Services. There was an obvious concentration on structure and structural modification. The relationships both inter and intra-organisational were not always objectively considered.

What is a credit union?

Cape Credit Union League January 1900 (has links)
A credit union is a self-help financial co-operative where people, who are united by a Common Bond, agree to save money together and, to make loans to one another at low rates of interest. The common bond is the most important characteristic of a credit union because credit unions are founded on trust and unless members already have something in common, they have no basis for trusting one another. The purpose of the common bond is to protect members' interests and members' funds. It also fosters a spirit commitment and co-operation.
