ISO 14001 is the specification and guideline providing the framework for the establishment of the EMS. It was first published in September 1996 and updated in November 2004. It was developed by ISO, a Geneva-based NGO that promotes the development and implementation of international standards (Darnall, 2001:2). EMS is part of the organisation’s management system used to develop and implement its environmental policy and manage its environmental impacts (ISO 14001, 2004:2).
In South Africa there is no legal requirement for EMSs to be put into place, other than where it may have been made a condition of a permit or licence application. All Underground Platinum Mines are required to develop, document, implement, maintain and review their EMS, which should be certified toISO14001:2004 (AEW, 2009:13).
The problem is that the implementation of an EMS is associated with a number of shortcomings and may be seen as a paper exercise to satisfy the needs of external auditors during audits with no particular value accruing to the organisation.
The aim of the research was to determine the operational value of the ISO 14001 EMS at selected Underground Platinum Mines. A structured survey-based research study was conducted among employees in three different operations within Underground Platinum Mine. This included literature and case studies review, interviews with key EMS implementers and distribution of questionnaires to those employees involved with the EMS implementation.
The main aim of the research has been achieved and all the research sub-questions were answered. The study concludes that the ISO 14001 EMS as implemented at Underground Platinum Mine is not merely a paper exercise but has an operational value. / Thesis (M. Thinking Beyond Formal Institutions: Why Local Governments in China Tolerate Underground Protestant ChurchesReny, Marie-Eve 31 August 2012 (has links)
That authoritarian regimes adopt various strategies of societal control to secure their resilience has been widely explored in comparative politics. The scholarship has emphasized regimes’ reliance upon tactics as diverse as cooptation, economic and social policy reforms, and multiparty elections. Yet, existing comparative studies have predominantly focused on formal institutions, largely ignoring authoritarian states’ resort to informal rules as effective governance and regime preservation strategies.
Local governments in China have tolerated underground Protestant churches, and in doing so, they have failed to enforce the central government’s policy of religious cooptation. This dissertation explores the reasons underlying local government tolerance of underground churches. I argue that accommodative informal institutions emerge out of a bargaining process involving agents (state and society) with a mutually compatible set of interests. Both parties need to reduce uncertainty about the other’s political intentions, and for that reason, they are likely to choose to cooperate strategically with one another.
On the one hand, local officials view policies of religious cooptation as ineffective to curb the expansion of underground religion, and as increasingly risky to enforce in a context where an extensive use of coercion could be subject to severe professional sanctions. On the other hand, underground pastors seek to maximize their autonomy under authoritarian constraints; to that extent, they have used informal compliance as a strategy to earn local government acceptance. Compliance manifests itself in four ways: openness to dialogue with local authorities, the proactive sharing of sensitive information about church affairs, gift-giving and -receiving, and the maintenance of a low profile in terms of church size and rhetoric. Strategic cooperation brings benefits to both parties. It provides local public security officials’ with a stable source of intelligence about the underground space, which is key to ensuring an effective management of religious affairs. Moreover, it allows underground churches to remain autonomous from the state and decreases risks that they face coercion. Yet, inasmuch as informal arrangements are self-enforcing and rule-bound, they ultimately serve regime interests by increasing the costs of political mobilization for the compliant clergy, and by accentuating divisions between the latter and politicized pastors.

In this paper I provide estimates of the size of the hidden economy of India for the period 1971 - 2004. Analysis on previous attempts is done with a focus on the dynamic multiple indicators multiple causes (DYMIMC) and the currency demand methods. I estimate the size of the Indian economy using indicator and causal variables chosen by Schneider, Chaudhuri and Chatterjee in their paper, “The Size and Development of the Indian Shadow Economy and a Comparison with other 18 Asian Countries: An Empirical Investigation”.

The development of a novel method for arresting tunnel explosionsDwomoh, Michael January 1998 (has links)
The onset of an explosion in an underground mining environment is a threat that has over years attracted a lot of attention. Much of this attention has focused on either arresting the explosion after it has been initiated or preventing the initiation. The methods devised have proved successful in most cases, but on the odd occasion that they fail, the end results can be disastrous. There have been fatalities from underground mining explosions as a result of fires burning and sapping all the oxygen in the atmosphere leading to asphyxiation. A different approach to arresting these explosions would enhance safety in the face of increased productivity. A novel method using an explosion door with a porous media acting as a shock wave attenuator and arresting the flames has been introduced. This research investigates the ability of the porous media used in the explosion door to withstand explosions. The performance of the porous media is crucial, as its failure would render the explosion door useless. In order to assess the performance of the porous media, a shock tube was built capable of generating shock waves with a Mach number of 1.5. By placing samples of the porous media within the test section of the shock tube, pressure measurements were taken fore and aft of the porous media as it was impinged upon by the shock wave. Tests were also conducted using thin orifice plates to provide data for comparing the performance characteristics of the porous media. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the porous media and the orifice plates were performed to validate the experimental work as well providing graphic detail of the flow around the test specimen. The work presented in this thesis makes a contribution to the efforts towards the provision of a safe underground environment. This contribution is achieved by investigating the performance of the porous media to be used in an explosion door and correlating the performance of the porous media with thin orifice plates. The porous media in the work presented here is currently used in the castings industry and its application as a shock wave attenuator and fire arrester would contribute greatly to the well being of all people working underground.

Although the Soviet partisan movement in the Second World War was one of a kind, in the sense that it was far more substantial than any comparable phenomenon in the West, the Jewish role within it had its own historical peculiarities. If Jewish motives for taking up arms against the occupying forces of the Third Reich were much the same as those of other partisans, they were forced to come to terms with the anti-Semitism not only of their Axis foes, but of so-called collaborators, anti-Nazi but anti-Soviet nationalists, and anti-Nazi but anti-Semitic Soviet partisans. This subject has not been explored by Soviet historians for obvious ideological reasons and the scant literature in English so far is limited largely to eye-witness accounts and insufficient statistics, which this thesis makes use of. Its purpose is to attempt to ascertain the Jewish contribution to the Soviet partisan movement and the circumstances, some of them unique, that defined it.

Configuration Optimization of Underground Cables inside a Large Magnetic Steel Casing for Best AmpacityMoutassem, Wael 22 February 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents a method for optimizing cable configuration inside a large magnetic cylindrical steel casing, from the total ampacity point of view. The method is comprised of two main parts, namely: 1) analytically calculating the electromagnetic losses in the steel casing and sheathed cables, for an arbitrary cables configuration, and 2) implementing an algorithm for determining the optimal cables configuration to obtain the best total ampacity. The first part involves approximating the eddy current and hysteresis losses in the casing and cables. The calculation is based on the theory of images, which this thesis expands to apply to casings having both high magnetic permeability and high electric conductivity at the same time. The method of images, in combination with approximating the cable conductors and sheaths as multiple physical filaments, is used to compute the final current distributions in the cables and pipe and thus the associated losses. The accuracy of this computation is assessed against numerical solutions obtained using the Maxwell finite element program by Ansoft. Next, the optimal cable configuration is determined by applying a proposed two-level optimization algorithm. At the outer level, a combinatorial optimization based on a genetic algorithm explores the different possible configurations. The performance of every configuration is evaluated according to its total ampacity, which is calculated using a convex optimization algorithm. The convex optimization algorithm, which forms the inner level of the overall optimization procedure, is based on the barrier method. This proposed optimization procedure is tested for a duct bank installation containing twelve cables and fifteen ducts, comprising two circuits and two cables per phase, and compared with a brute force method of considering all possible configurations. The optimization process is also applied to an installation consisting of a single circuit inside a large magnetic steel casing.

In this study underground dams are briefly described and detailed information about the design and construction aspects is provided. Since the material, of which dam wall is composed, is the main variable influencing the groundwater behavior, various types of dam wall are discussed. The use and usefulness of the underground dams as a means of sustainable development, and their performance in the management of groundwater resources are analyzed with the help of two example studies. In the first example a hypothetical idealized aquifer is considered, while in the second one, a real aquifer is selected.
For the performance evaluation, and for the analysis of the impact of the underground dams on the groundwater behavior, numerical simulation is opted. For that purpose, a well-known computer code, MODFLOW, A Modular Three-Dimensional Finite Difference Groundwater Flow Model of U.S. Geological Survey, (McDonald and Harbaugh, 1988) is used.

For a natural gas importing country, &ldquo / take or pay&rdquo / approach creates problems since the demand for natural gas varies during the year and the excess amount of natural gas should be stored.
In this study, an underground gas storage project is evaluated in a depleted gas Field M. After gathering all necessary reservoir, fluid, production and pressure data, the data were adapted to computer language, which was used in a commercial simulator software (IMEX) that is the CMG&rsquo / s (Computer Modelling Group) new generation adoptive simulator, to reach the history matching.
The history matching which consists of the 4 year of production of the gas reservoir is the first step of this study. The simulation program was able to accomplish a good history match with the given parameters of the reservoir.
Using the history match as a base, five different scenarios were created and forecast the injection and withdrawal performance of the reservoir. These scenarios includes 5 newly drilled horizontal wells which were used in combinations with the existing wells.
With a predetermined injection rate of 13 MMcf/D was set for all the wells and among the 5 scenarios, 5 horizontal &ndash / 6 vertical injectors & / 5 horizontal - 6 vertical producers is the most successful in handling the gas inventory and the time it takes for a gas injection and production period. After the determination of the well configuration, the optimum injection rate for the entire field was obtained and found to be 130 MMcf/D by running different injection rates for all wells and then for only horizontal wells different injection rates were applied with a constant injection rate of 130 MMcf/d for vertical wells.
Then it has been found that it is better to apply the 5th scenario which includes 5 horizontal &ndash / 6 vertical injectors & / 5 horizontal - 6 vertical producers having an injection rate of 130 MMcf/d for horizontal and vertical wells. Since within the 5th scenario, changing the injection rate to 1.3 Bcf/d and 13 Bcf/d, did not effect and change the average reservoir pressure significantly, it is best to carry out the project with the optimum injection rate which is 130 MMcf/d.
The total gas produced untill 2012 is 394 BCF and the gas injected is 340 BCF where the maximum average reservoir pressure was recovered and set into a new value of 1881 psi by injection and cushion gas pressure as 1371 psi by withdrawal. If 5th scenario is compared with the others, there is an increase in injection and production performance about 90%.

Drilling bit optimization is one the key concepts in drilling engineering.It is considered as one f the economical factors in an overall well budget.Computers are strictly used as decision-making systems in the optimization calculations.Formation parameters are easily processed according to drilling bit selection criteria by the help of computer programs.Although computer program is an interface by which user makes computer some jobs,database is another important part of this necessary decision-making systems.Data is stored and can be modified in the database.Also necessary calculations can be accomplished by database so that results of these calculations and data can be reached by the computer programs.In this study,a database,holding field data is designed and a computer program calculating necessary parameters and related excel file holding output are prepared.Although mostly lowest costper foot is preferred and there isn' / t an absolute method for choosing optimum bit,this design can be helpful in selection period.
