Araújo, Adriana Nunes January 2006 (has links)
The focus of this dissertation is the work analysis of ten electricians who act in confined space at underground power lines at the Estate Electricity Company in Porto Alegre, RS. It was identified the electricians’ ergonomic demand items. The research was carried out according to the participatory methods of survey and assessment of data, to improvement of safety and work conditions and, therefore, to prevent accidents. The research disclosed that the electricians have the relationship with their superiors, supervisors, and workmates as the most positive aspect of the job. On the other hand, they point out critical problems from different causes: biomechanical, task organization, environmental, and the ones related to the company. Overload regarding physical and mental work demand has been identified, proving that the fear, evident in the professionals’ speech is about the electricity, and not related to confined underground spaces. Besides, the research also displayed five procedures regarded as minimal standards to execute safe work in confined spaces: recognition, testing and monitoring atmosphere, ventilation, training and rescue. Despite the little knowledge electricians have on this criteria, some points of it were reported, some in an indirect way, during the interviews as relevant aspects to the work, being attributed to most of them a low level of satisfaction. Therefore, it comes to the conclusion that the implantation of a Permit-Requires Space Program, besides promoting accidents prevention in these spaces, has a direct relationship with the workers’ satisfaction.

Durán, César Augusto Arias January 2014 (has links)
Underground excavations have always been affected by the conditions of mass, which have different characteristics and behaviors against deformation caused after excavation of a gallery or tunnel. Because of this, it is necessary an analysis of the parameters needed to establish the safety conditions of the tunnel and it is proposed the use of a stereo optical tracking to analyze the displacement of artifacts (set of markers) installed on the contour of tunnels’ faces in order to detect displacements of the mass points established with a precision lower than ±1 mm. This system operates in the infrared spectral region to take advantage of the low light and reduce the optical noise in environments with grace. Further work includes validation results and development of low stereo vision conditions of two different scenarios spatial volume, as well as the procedure carried out to calibrate the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the system sensors (monochrome camera) system. The results show an accuracy of ± 0,1881 mm for artifacts with three markers and an accuracy of ± 0,4952 for artifacts with four markers. Finally, the system operates with a sensitivity of 0,99 mm in the determination of an artifact associated with a point in the tunnel profile position, and thus, one can define the conditions for stability of the rock mass and assistance requirements for the decisions of treatment methods and increased.

This study aims to simulate numerically via the finite element method the deformability and geomechanical stability of underground mines in evaporites considering scenarios galleries performed by the method of room and pillar and digging for natural gas storage.

Plants in this family vary widely in structure in response to environmental conditions. The present study aimed to characterize the morphoanatomy and histochemistry of aerial and underground organs of Chrysolaena simplex (Less.) Dematt and Lessingianthus buddleiifolius (Mart. ex DC.) H. Rob., assess the occurrence of certain classes of secondary metabolites through phytochemical analyses, and study the effects of seasonality on morpho-anatomical and physiological traits. The study was carried out in an area of campo rupestre in the Reserva Biológica Prof. José Ângelo Rizzo of Universidade Federal de Goiás, inside Parque Estadual da Serra Dourada (PESD). Adult individuals of C. simplex and L. buddleiifolius were collected in the dry and rainy seasons. Samples were analyzed using standard techniques of plant anatomy and scanning electron microscopy. Fresh material was used for histochemical tests. The phytochemical analysis used standard reactions to detect classes of secondary metabolites. C. simplex e L. buddleiifolius had similar anatomical traits, such as amphistomatic leaves, monostratified epidermis, thin cuticle, glandular and non-glandular trichomes, anisocytic stomata, dorsiventral mesophyll, collateral vascular bundles and hydathodes. Histochemical tests identified the presence of lipophilic substances and phenolic compounds in the studied species. Phytochemical screening of leaf and stem samples detected the presence of steroids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, and coumarins in both species. In contrast, saponins were only found in L. buddleiifolius. Seasonality affected the morpho-anatomy of the species studied, revealing their great phenotypic plasticity. The underground system of C. simplex was a rhizophore, while the system of L. buddleiifolius was a xylopodium. Secretory ducts were found in the adventitious roots of C. simplex, whereas the roots of L. buddleiifolius had secretory endodermis. Both species had lipophilic substances and inulin crystals. Crystals were observed in the entire rhizophore of C. simplex, but exclusively in the roots of L. buddleiifolius. The phytochemical analysis of the underground systems revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins and coumarins, but steroids and triterpenoids were only detected in C. simplex.

Efeito da corrosão no comportamento geotécnico e mecânico de tubulações enterradas / The corrosion effect on the geotechnical and mechanical behavior of underground pipelines

Érika Mendes de Sá 07 July 2003 (has links)
This work evaluates the influence of corrosion effect on the geotechnical behavior of underground conduits. Small-scale tests were carried out on two different types of pipes, in which the degree and location of the corrosion were changed. The results show the most harmful corrosion locations relative to the intact conduits. The damaged conduits built in and located under asymmetric condition behave as if they were subjected to an asymmetric loading condition and this must be considered to the prevention of possible displacements. Finally, the work evaluates the joined influence of the corrosion and conduit\'s flexibility on the mechanical behavior of underground pipelines. To allow comparisons to inquire the validation of the adopted laboratorial model, numeric simulations were used, which enable the study of the problem considering other corrosion layouts.

ASSESSMENT OF POTENTIAL IMPACTS TO SUBSURFACE BODIES OF WATER DUE TO UNDERGROUND COAL MINING

Bode-Jimenez, Gabriel 01 January 2017 (has links)
Underground coal mining operations induce ground movements, which may impact overlying hydrogeologic systems. Potential impacts mainly include changes in the hydraulic conductivity of overlying strata, decreasing of the hydraulic head and changes in water flow. The present research quantifies potential hydrogeologic impacts caused by underground mining through modeling of pre- and post-mining hydrogeologic systems. Three-dimensional conceptual hydrogeologic models were constructed with the Processing Modflow for Windows software package (PMWiN). The models are based on an actual case study, but were simplified in terms of geometry and material properties. Water flow was simulated under changing hydrogeologic properties. A number of scenarios were investigated including models with horizontal or inclined topography, featuring an aquifer overlying two longwall panels. The hydrogeologic properties of the models were estimated based on empirical relationships between the post-mining hydraulic conductivity and strain in the overburden. The strain regime in the overburden was estimated using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) package, which allows calculation of surface deformations due to underground coal mining. The research focuses on changes in hydraulic heads; results indicate that hydraulic heads may decrease over undermined areas and may rebound as mining ceases. Water infiltration may occur from higher located overburden formations to lower formations due to mining induced changes in hydrogeologic properties.

Trace element contaminants in the Kuwait water production system

Al Anqah, Laila January 1996 (has links)
Fresh water in Kuwait is produced by non- conventional methods. About 95% of this water comes from desalinated seawater using multi-stage flash distillation technique and the remainder comes from underground brackish water. The blended water containes organic, inorganic and trace metal impurities within the recommended international standard limits. The purpose of this work is to identify the source of selected trace metals present in the drinking water in Kuwait. Chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, vanadium and zinc have been analysed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS). Efforts were made to improve the preconcentration of the selected metals and their separation from the high concentration of salts in seawater which affect the accuracy and cause major interference in the analysis. Solid-liquid extraction (chelex-100 resin) and liquid-liquid extraction (methyl iso-butyl ketone and freon) with and without back-extraction into nitric acid were investigated. Liquid-liquid extraction without back-extraction proved to give optimum recovery of the selected metals. Results confirmed that both AAS and ICP-MS are suitable for the analysis of trace metals in Kuwait's waters. Although AAS technique proved to be more accurate in analysing the selected metals than ICP-MS, the latter was adopted since its accuracy is acceptable (1.1-4.4%) and it is easier and faster than the former technique. The study revealed that the source of copper, iron, nickel and zinc is the construction materials of the distillation plants, while the source of lead and vanadium is the brackish water. Manganese and chromium concentrations are very low in all sources. No direct relationship between the metal concentration in the seawater and the distillate could be deduced.

Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of a Shallow Two-Story Underground RC Box Structure

Huh, Jungwon, Tran, Quang, Haldar, Achintya, Park, Innjoon, Ahn, Jin-Hee 18 July 2017 (has links)
Tunnels, culverts, and subway stations are the main parts of an integrated infrastructure system. Most of them are constructed by the cut-and-cover method at shallow depths (mainly lower than 30 m) of soil deposits, where large-scale seismic ground deformation can occur with lower stiffness and strength of the soil. Therefore, the transverse racking deformation (one of the major seismic ground deformation) due to soil shear deformations should be included in the seismic design of underground structures using cost- and time-efficient methods that can achieve robustness of design and are easily understood by engineers. This paper aims to develop a simplified but comprehensive approach relating to vulnerability assessment in the form of fragility curves on a shallow two-story reinforced concrete underground box structure constructed in a highly-weathered soil. In addition, a comparison of the results of earthquakes per peak ground acceleration (PGA) is conducted to determine the effective and appropriate number for cost- and time-benefit analysis. The ground response acceleration method for buried structures (GRAMBS) is used to analyze the behavior of the structure subjected to transverse seismic loading under quasi-static conditions. Furthermore, the damage states that indicate the exceedance level of the structural strength capacity are described by the results of nonlinear static analyses (or so-called pushover analyses). The Latin hypercube sampling technique is employed to consider the uncertainties associated with the material properties and concrete cover owing to the variation in construction conditions. Finally, a large number of artificial ground shakings satisfying the design spectrum are generated in order to develop the seismic fragility curves based on the defined damage states. It is worth noting that the number of ground motions per PGA, which is equal to or larger than 20, is a reasonable value to perform a structural analysis that produces satisfactory fragility curves.

Tomographie temporelle de la densité par la mesure des muons / Temporal tomography of the density from muon measurement

Hivert, Fanny 02 July 2015 (has links)
The muons, charged particles of cosmic origin, have the particularity of being very penetrative. The attenuation of muon flux in matter highlights the quantity of matter (depth x density) passed through. Based on this principle, the muography is a technique allowing the study of the in-situ density of large targets as geological structures. The Temporal Tomography of rock Density using Muon Measurements (T2DM2) aims at characterizing the spatial and temporal density variations with a first application in the unsaturated aquifer of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse located above the LSBB. This thesis work is focused on the numerical simulation of muon flux at depth and a first campaign of measurements during 16 consecutive months at various depths in LSBB galleries. The performed simulations are in agreement with the expected density variations in an hydrogeological context. The influences of the rock atomic composition and of the scattering processes are discussed as well as strategy to reduce the acquisition duration (and/or detection surfaces and/or solid angles). The measurements performed at LSBB allowed to identify areas of lower density such as the X1 point. The acquired data have been corrected thanks to the determination of the barometric coefficient allowing the temporal analysis of muon flux. The comparison of the recorded flux at different depths (~ 60 m, ~ 200 m and ~ 500 m) with the numerical simulations leads to an estimation of the average density of the rocks located above the LSBB of 1.9 ± 0.1 g.cm-3 testifying their important porosity.
