The future of UK university presses in the electronic environment

Hardy, Rachel L. January 2005 (has links)
Scholarly communication of all types is changing dramatically with the introduction of electronic technologies. This new environment means that standalone print publishing risks being left behind, and as many STM journals acquired or launched by commercial publishers have been subject to dramatic price rises in the last few years, there has been much talk of ways to by-pass commercial publishers. The scholarly publishing market is fertile ground for innovation and there has been a lack of objective research regarding the UK university press. Despite the many changes that have occurred in the scholarly publishing industry in recent years, university presses in the UK that have not been in the forefront of innovation have remained minor players. The research focused on the university press, it's current situation and it's role in the electronic future. The research included: case studies that were conducted at both UK and USA university presses, along with the corresponding libraries, a questionnaire which was sent to academic authors that had published with both a university press and a commercial publishing house, and both qualitative and quantitative questionnaires sent to all operating UK university press directors. The thesis argues that university presses (in particular the smaller presses), as not for-profit organisations, are in a prime position to increase their power in the scholarly publishing system and can make changes to provide valued services to the Higher Education Community. Findings show that university presses, both in the USA as well as the UK, have faced, and continue to face change. Lack of funding and HEI support continues to make the traditional publishing role of the university presses difficult, and, in many cases, has caused the closure and sale of university presses in the UK. The university press continues to play an important role, and will continue to do so in the near future. However, in order for smaller university presses in the UK to remain sustainable, they must continue to adapt to, and take advantage of, change, recognise the value they add to the scholarly communication system and not rely on others to improve their situation. They cannot remain static in a changing environment. Through the work with university presses three potential business plans are proposed for a UK organisation of university presses, along with two business models to help the presses adapt to the changing environment and continue to play a role that is required by the HEI. Based on the results and conclusions of the research recommendations are made to stakeholders and ideas for further research are identified.

Transforming a publishing division into a scholarly press : a feasibility study of the Africa Institute of South Africa

Le Roux, Elizabeth Henriette 06 August 2007 (has links)
Based on informal discussions with a range of scholars across the African continent, it was felt that there was a need for a scholarly publisher located in Africa, focusing on African content, and targeting an African audience. It had also been expressed by a number of researchers, and was of wider potential interest – given the author’s institutional situation and context at the time, as well as management imperatives – that the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) could use its existing capacity and strengths in the area of African studies, specifically from a social science and development perspective, and its networks on the African continent, to form a possible institutional base for such a press, through the expansion of its publishing division. But there was no certainty as to whether this was in fact a viable business idea. Thus, this study carries out a feasibility study, to investigate and evaluate whether a scholarly press focusing on African material would be viable in the current South African, continental and international context. The study takes the form of a literature survey, questionnaire-based empirical survey, and business planning exercise. The key research question that is investigated is: Given the limitations of and challenges currently facing the South African (and wider African) scholarly publishing industry, could a scholarly publisher working according to the above vision be viably set up, and how could this be achieved? Broad support is found for the notion of a new scholarly publisher, and a business plan is developed to show how such a press could be set up, working within certain constraints and assumptions. / Dissertation (MIS)--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Information Science / MIS / Unrestricted

Rosa, Celia Regina de Oliveira 10 August 2018 (has links)
The focus of this study is the library publishing model disseminated into international university or research libraries in order to designate the library which acts in services of academic content editions. It discusses the production of digital book by a publishing service which is different from the traditional national publication model usually aimed at the production of digital journals. By expanding its field of activity, the library reaffirms its mission of preserving and circulating information by reformulating and adding the activity of publishing freely accessible digital content. The work also highlights the partnership of the Library Publishing-University Press in the building of a model of publication for digital contents, highlighting their difficulties and actions for subsistence in the academic environment; involving the search for new authors and readers. It further describes the contribution of entities and associations, such as the Library Publishing Coalition, in order to propagate publishing practices in web-accessible formats and distribute courses to contribute to qualification for training people involved in the area. This work also deals with the difficulties of open access through green, gold, bronze, hybrid, black or pirate models, as well as the importance of knowledge about licenses for use by the academic community. It presents cases from a research library and a publishing house report as well as the workflow of production of digital books by content publishing software. In addition, it points out some challenges facing the library publishing world, such as the publisher/librarian relationship and perspectives for the implementation and continuity of these activities.

Rocha, Maria Amália 09 December 2014 (has links)
The theme of this undergraduate thesis is the university press at Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), and this thesis main goal is to portray, from its creation, the history behind Edufu, describing its trajectory to later on demonstrate how the press works when it comes to personnel, products, installations, regulations and others. Among the specific goals are the following: to demonstrate how the publishing of academic books works at UFU; to present documents that regulate its inner operations and the changes that they went through; and also to describe quantitatively the improvement of the published works throughout the years. To achieve that, a documentary research was conducted with records from the Editorial Board, resolutions from the upper boards, ordinances, internal documents from the press, among others. By doing so, the history behind a fundamental sector at UFU for recording and publishing the knowledge produced, mainly in its postgraduate programs, was reconstructed, which led to the conclusion that many of the problems that were existent at first remain unsolved, such as physical space, adequate labor, issuance of invoice etc. However, there was also improvement, and even with difficulties, the press continues to issue books. At the end, there are suggestions for further research on UFU Press, but with different approaches.
