A technical evaluation of concentrating solar thermal power generation technologies for the Upington area of South Africa.Tempies, Jonathan C. January 2012 (has links)
Studies undertaken by Eskom in 2001 identified three sites near the Northern Cape town of Upington which are suitable for a 100 MW Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) generating plant. Of the CSP technologies investigated, the central receiver option was identified as best for the Northern Cape, however almost none of Eskom’s analysis was made public. The basis of the central receiver’s suitability versus other CSP options is not publicly known. Given recent advances in concentrating systems, an argument exists for reassessing the suitability of various solar thermal technologies for bulk power generation.
This study first characterises the incident solar radiation (insolation) levels at Upington from six data sources and assesses their quality. The data are then used to model performance of the parabolic trough, compact linear Fresnel reflector, central receiver, and dish-engine technologies. A software modelling tool of the United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory (System Advisor Model) is used to facilitate the comparison. Simulation results are compared with data from similar studies to ensure consistency of the CSP model inputs and performance outputs.
Constraining the results to the environmental conditions of Upington, it is found that while central receiver technology produces less electricity per square kilometre of collector area, it uses less water than parabolic trough technology to obtain a higher annual electric output. Dish-engine technology has the most favourable annual electricity production to water-usage ratio, however, its modest annual electricity output and lack of energy storage capability weaken the case for it to match South Africa’s national load profile substantively. Examining the modelled month-to-month electricity output characteristic, the central receiver technology delivers significantly more electricity during the lower insolation winter period of the year than the competing technologies. This results in the central receiver technology achieving the highest annual electric output of the four technologies compared under the same insolation levels, strengthening the case for its implementation.
As a whole, this work characterises the insolation levels at Upington, provides an analysis of the technical performance of competing CSP technologies for the proposed Northern Cape site, and argues quantitatively in favour of the central receiver option. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.

one feature having the most impact is their physical appearance. In an ideal world, every
person should have a fair opportunity to reach their full potential in life.
Orthodontics can improve a person's quality of life by creating confident smiles and a
functional occlusion (Sheiham, 1993).
Uncorrected malocclusions can adversely affect one's speech, general health and self-esteem.
Improving the general physiological implications malocclusions has on person, may make
them more employable and more successful in relationships, creating an overall happier,
healthier and more successful community. The more people are offered affordable
orthodontic treatment, the more acceptable orthodontic treatment may become. Thus, the
perceived benefits of Orthodontic treatment in a population group are Improvement of Oral
Health and enhancement of psychosocial welfare. Accurate data on the prevalence,
distribution and severity of malocclusion is needed by provincial oral health management.
They also need accurate data of the orthodontic treatment need of the children in that specific
area. This data is vital for the effective planning of the education, training and deployment of
dental workers, as well as the resources and distribution thereof in specific, designated areas
(Holtshousen, 1997; So & Tang, 1993).
This study's focus was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusion amongst adolescents in
Upington area in the Northern Cape, and to determine the need for orthodontic treatment in
the area using the Index for Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).

M.A. / With this research, an Environmental Centre for the Northern Cape Province is suggested at Upington as an environmental management initiative. Environmental management aims to create an awareness and a concern for the environment and all its facets. In this way, knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivation and commitment are striven for, so that the environment and its related problems can be identified and solved by the community. Formal teaching cannot do this task by itself. An additional source is suggested. An Environmental Centre can benefit the community if it creates an awareness of the various elements of the environment, their interdependency and the necessity of a healthy environment for the survival of man. It can motivate the community to accept responsibility for the environment, provide the knowlegde and values so that solutions can be found for environmental problems. Upington in the Northern Cape Province has several unique qualities which can justify an Environmental Centre: • an unique climate with many human activities, • the availability of the Orange River's water, • its population composition, • Various economic activities(intensive/extensive farming) • a growing tourist sector, and • a very well developed infrastructure. A questionnaire was used to compile a residents profile to test the Environmental Centre initiative. Residents acknowledged the existence of environmental problems and that it must be addressed. An Environmental Centre with a well developed, co-ordinated and integrated environmental management plan, can be a solution. The way man sees his environment, indicates how he will utilise his environment. Knowledge and education about the environment can lead to citizens that know, understand and protect their environment against every form of deterioration. Environmental adulthood can thus be achieved.

An eclectic approach was followed because theoretical views on motivation could
not furnish a comprehensive theory. The definition emerging from this approach
states that motivation is a process started within a person to create a state of need
for satisfaction and happiness that can be reached by instigating and sustaining
goal-directed activity. The link between learning and motivation, as well as related
factors, was ascertained. Determinants of high and low levels of learning motivation
were established. Programmes aimed at higher motivation levels were explored.
Empirically it was proven that grade 9 learners in historically coloured schools
leaned more towards an extrinsic orientation; grade 12's more intrinsic. An

Responding to water demand strategies : case study in the Lower Orange catchment management area (LOCMA) / C.M. Gouws.Gouws, Catharina Maria January 2010 (has links)
This study is an investigation into water management policies in South Africa, their effect on water users and the perceptions users have of these policies. The investigation begins with an exposition of concepts such as water demand management (WDM), as well as integrated water resource management (IWRM). A sub-discourse of the main theme is the societal tendency to neglect its common property. Garret Hardin's groundbreaking observations on the "tragedy of the commons" (1968) are explored in an effort to locate issues of relevance in effective water management strategies. In contemplating the commons, it is evident that aspects of morality and ethics are involved. The morality of a society be it in a global or national context, seems to manifest itself in legislation and policies, and in the way these are implemented. The relevance of good governance, hydropolitics and sustainable development is also discussed to provide the necessary theoretical background to an understanding of the relationship between consumers and the
water commons. Access to safe drinking water is protected in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act, 108 of 1996. Flowing from the government's obligation to take
reasonable legislative and other measures to achieve the progressive realisation of fundamental human rights stipulated in section 27(2) of the Constitution, the challenge since 1994 has been to provide access to water for all inhabitants and to manage the available water resources effectively. Furthermore, the objective of subsequent water legislation such as the National Water Act, 36 of 1998 and regulatory plans, like the National Water Resource Strategy has been to incorporate international trends in water governance.
The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs (DWEA) divided South Africa into 19 regions, called water management areas (WMA). In this study, attention is focused on what constitutes a catchment and how a catchment management agency (CMA) governs its water resources. A description is provided of the functions of water user associations (WUAs) and how ththe Lower Orange Catchment Management Area is, for example, the blueprint from which stakeholders develop their goals. In this study, the water situation in the Lower Orange Water Management Area is under scrutiny. The focus is on the three main institutional components of water management (the Lower Orange catchment management, the Upington Islands Water User Association [UIWUA] and the //Khara Hais Local Municipality). The progress of the establishment of the Lower Orange Catchment Management Agency is outlined over a period of five years. Meanwhile, the Upington Islands Water User Association was developed and this has grown in stature. The work being done by these institutions is investigated by looking at grassroots effects, especially in
respect of irrigation activities. The unique water management circumstances of the
//Khara Hais Local Municipality are then investigated along with the plans outlined in
their Integrated Development Plan {lOP) and their Water Services Development Plane Internal Strategic Perspective (ISP) of(WSDP). Because local irrigation operations consume most of the available surface water in the Lower Orange Water Management Area, irrigation farmers and their activities warrant closer attention. A historical overview is given of the development of irrigation in the region followed by an assessment of the role of two of the most prominent historical figures in Upington, Reverend Adriaan Schroder and Abraham
"Holbors" September. Ultimately, however, the focus falls on the current state of irrigation in the area. It is possible to distinguish between the approach of large commercial farming operations and that of smaller irrigation farming units to irrigation. Specific attention is given to the perceptions of irrigation farmers as far as the policies and legislation pertaining to water issues is concerned. This study will hopefully provide the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs(DWEA), //Khara Hais Local Municipality and organised agriculture with some recommendations on efficient integrated water management strategies. It might well be of value to other municipalities who are experiencing similar problems.
