Assessing Working Models' Impact on Land Cover Dynamics through Multi-Agent Based Modeling and Artificial Neural Networks: A Case Study of Roanoke, VA

Nusair, Heba Zaid 30 May 2024 (has links)
The transition towards flexible work arrangements, notably work-from-home (WFH) practices, has prompted significant discourse on their potential to reshape urban landscapes. While existing urban growth models (UGM) offer insights into environmental and economic impacts, There is a need to study the urban phenomena from the bottom-up style, considering the essential influence of individuals' behavior and decision-making process at disaggregate and local levels (Brail, 2008, p. 89). Addressing this gap, this study aims to comprehensively understand how evolving work modalities influence the urban form and land use patterns by focusing on socioeconomic and environmental factors. This research employs an Agent-Based Model (ABM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), integrated with GIS technologies, to predict the future Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes within Roanoke, Virginia. The study uniquely explores the dynamic interplay between macro-level policies and micro-level individual behaviors—categorized by employment types, social activities, and residential choices—shedding light on their collective impact on urban morphology. Contrary to conventional expectations, findings reveal that the current low rate in WFH practices has not significantly redirected urban development trends towards sprawl but rather has emphasized urban densification, largely influenced by on-site work modalities. This observation is corroborated by WFH ratios not exceeding 10% in any analyzed census tract. Regarding model performance, the integration of micro-agents into the model substantially improved its accuracy from 86% to 89.78%, enabling a systematic analysis of residential preferences between WFH and on-site working (WrOS) agents. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis and decision score maps delineate the distinct spatial preferences of these agent groups, highlighting a pronounced suburban and rural preference among WFH agents, in contrast to the urban-centric inclination of WrOS agents. Utilizing ABM and ANN integrated with GIS technologies, this research advances the precision and complexity of urban growth predictions. The findings contribute valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers and underline the intricate relationships between work modalities and urban structure, challenging existing paradigms and setting a precedent for future urban planning methodologies. / Doctor of Philosophy / As more people start working from home, cities might change unexpectedly. This study in Roanoke, Virginia, explores how work-from-home (WFH) practices affect urban development. Traditional city growth models look at big-picture trends, but this study dives into the details of workers' individual behaviors and their residential choices. Using advanced computer models such as machine learning and geographic information systems (GIS), predictions are made on how different work arrangements influence where workers live and how cities expand. Surprisingly, fewer people work from home than expected. This hasn't caused cities to spread out more. Instead, Roanoke is expected to become denser in the next ten years because on-site workers tend to live in urban centers, while those who work from home prefer suburban and rural areas and, sometimes, urban. Different work arrangements lead to distinct residential preferences. By including the workers' individual behaviors in the models, the model's accuracy increased from 86% to 89.78%. Logistic regression analysis highlights the factors influencing land use changes, such as proximity to roads, slopes, home values, and wages. This research helps city planners and policymakers understand working arrangement trends and create better policies to manage urban development. It shows the complex relationship between work practices and city structures, providing valuable insights for future city planning.

O papel da ideologia na expansão urbana: a questão econômica e os impactos socioambientais do Arco Metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro / The role of ideology in urban sprawl: the economic issue and the social and environmental impacts of the Metropolitan Ring Road of Rio de Janeiro (AMRJ)

Souza, Ticianne Ribeiro de 12 May 2015 (has links)
In 2003 a change on the Brazilian political scene starts, some authors would describe it as the \"new developmentalism\" period. Therefore, some territorial structuring policies elaborated in previous decades within the \"developmentalism\" context returns, such as the Metropolitan Ring Road of Rio de Janeiro (AMRJ). However, the decision of whether or not to build constructions of that magnitude lays sole on the intense need for economic growth, leaving aside broad debates with the population in order to clarify its negative social and environmental impacts, in addition to which sectors will profit from such projects. Considering the concept of ideology defined by Marx and Engels (1989), the objective of this study is to analyze the presence of the ideological discourse in major governmental sources of information about the AMRJ considering its economic, institutional and social and environmental aspects. According to these authors, the use of ideology by the ruling class legitimizes their ideas presenting them as fair, valid and beneficial for the entire population. As stated in the official documentation, this ring road purpose is to enable the distribution of the Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro\'s production (COMPERJ) via Itaguai\'s port, as well as reduce the vehicles\'s flow in the major metropolitan routes, especially on Avenida Brazil and Rio-Niterói bridge creating a new possibility route for vehicles that are only passing through the Rio de Janeiro city. However, we evinced here the factors that led to insignificant improvement of traffic in these routes after the inauguration of AMRJ. In addition, we pointed that the COMPERJ probably will not use this highway as a primary route since Petrobras is building its own road and port in a place closer than Itaguaí, in São Gonçalo. The analyzed material also constantly publicizes the benefits of the Ring Road about a boost on job creation and the facilitation of access to non-urbanized areas of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ). However, 98% of the increased number of jobs advertised is based only on the expectation of a long-term industrial growth. As to the expansion of the urban frontier, it implies many social and environmental negative impacts, such as worsening of existing infrastructure problems in the municipalities slashed by this road; increased human pressures in the areas of environmental preservation; increased occurrence of floods; gentrification of places occupied by artisanal fishermen; etcetera. Thus, questioning the real benefits of the AMRJ, we realized that its main justifications are just pieces of an ideological discourse. It can cause many problems and few handouts to the low-income population of Rio de Janeiro. The ring clearly benefits the logistics sector and the industrial sector by the reduction of transport costs and the creation of locational opportunities. We note as well that AMRJ\'s speech distorts the social impacts of this new highway and omits political, economic, social and environmental key issues to debate the validation of this project. It is therefore an ideological discourse designed to camouflage the interest of the ruling classes as a collective interest.

The making of clothing and the making of London, 1560-1660

Pitman, Sophie January 2017 (has links)
In recent years, urban historians have established that the period from 1560 to 1660 was a key era for London’s development from a relatively small European urban centre into a large dynamic global capital. This dissertation attempts to intervene in London scholarship by drawing attention to the economic, political, religious and – most significantly – cultural importance of clothing in the city in this period. Using material, visual, literary and archival sources, it explores the ways clothing contributed to the development of early modern London and, in turn, how London’s rapid growth changed the making, wearing, and meaning of clothing. This dissertation places material evidence at the fore using extant objects from museum collections. It also employs the new methodology of reconstruction to explore craft, ingenuity, and emotional self-expression in dress. As clothing infused economic and social life, it draws upon on a wide range of evidence, from London guild records, to portraits, travel accounts, personal letters, diaries and account books, plays, sermons and poems. With a focus on urban experience, this dissertation discusses not only elite luxury consumption, but also investigates the wardrobes of guildsmen, immigrant craftspeople, apprentices and maids – asking what they wore, what they thought about what they were wearing, and how they used clothing to navigate through the city during this time of rapid change. A chapter on the ‘London Look’ shows how inhabitants and visitors documented the visual and material styles of the city. Exploring the collaborative processes by which clothing was made, worn and appreciated by craftspeople and consumers, a chapter on making and buying clothing demonstrates how clothes were made and charts the emergence of a new consumer culture. Existing scholarship on sumptuary laws is challenged in a chapter that demonstrates how laws were enforced in the city while also integrating extant objects into the discussion for the first time. Finally, using a sample of London wills, the dissertation shows how Londoners owned, bequeathed and inherited clothing, and imbued it with emotional meaning. In sum, this dissertation aims to integrate scholarship on early modern London with material culture studies, and to promote the new methodology of reconstruction for historians. In revealing how London was conceived during a time of rapid change, clothing can be used as a lens through which to explore wider discourse about a city that by 1657 was being described as ‘Londinopolis.’ Clothing helped to make London into a wealthy, dynamic, and diverse urban centre, and these changes dramatically shaped the way clothing was made and appreciated.

As corollary of the insalubrity of the urban environment, the first sanitary rules were applied and regulated the use of it. The urban space is taken as an object to be medicated. As a scientific landmark to Health Geography of Maranhão it is considered the doctorate thesis Climate and most frequent diseases of the province of Maranhão , by César Augusto Marques, a doctor from Maranhão, presented in 1854. The historical aspects of the miasmatic and microbian theories are rescued, contextualizing in what way both of them gave priority or not to the relation health and envrironment, and their applicability to the movement of hygienist intervention of the urban space. From that dicussion it is done an analysis in which periods the miasmatic and microbian theories served as theorethical support to treat and attend the disorderly growth of the urban space of São Luís, and yet to discuss how the relation health-environment was priviledged and/or excluded in the actions of sanitary care which regulated the us and occupation of the same space. In spite of its theorethical and scientific restrictions, it is confirmed that the miasmatic theory was observed in the relation health and urban environment; as basic presupposition in the mitigating measures in promoting health, giving priority to the multicausality of factors vision which interfere in the population s health. The microbian theory, despite of contextualizing at first the relation health and urban environment of São Luís, gave more priority to the unicausality vision between the pathogenic agents and man.

Urban Growth Modeling Based on Land-use Changes and Road Network Expansion

Rui, Yikang January 2013 (has links)
A city is considered as a complex system. It consists of numerous interactivesub-systems and is affected by diverse factors including governmental landpolicies, population growth, transportation infrastructure, and market behavior.Land use and transportation systems are considered as the two most importantsubsystems determining urban form and structure in the long term. Meanwhile, urban growth is one of the most important topics in urban studies, and its maindriving forces are population growth and transportation development. Modelingand simulation are believed to be powerful tools to explore the mechanisms ofurban evolution and provide planning support in growth management. The overall objective of the thesis is to analyze and model urban growth basedon the simulation of land-use changes and the modeling of road networkexpansion. Since most previous urban growth models apply fixed transportnetworks, the evolution of road networks was particularly modeled. Besides, urban growth modeling is an interdisciplinary field, so this thesis made bigefforts to integrate knowledge and methods from other scientific and technicalareas to advance geographical information science, especially the aspects ofnetwork analysis and modeling. A multi-agent system was applied to model urban growth in Toronto whenpopulation growth is considered as being the main driving factor of urbangrowth. Agents were adopted to simulate different types of interactiveindividuals who promote urban expansion. The multi-agent model with spatiotemporalallocation criterions was shown effectiveness in simulation. Then, anurban growth model for long-term simulation was developed by integratingland-use development with procedural road network modeling. The dynamicidealized traffic flow estimated by the space syntax metric was not only used forselecting major roads, but also for calculating accessibility in land-usesimulation. The model was applied in the city centre of Stockholm andconfirmed the reciprocal influence between land use and street network duringthe long-term growth. To further study network growth modeling, a novel weighted network model, involving nonlinear growth and neighboring connections, was built from theperspective of promising complex networks. Both mathematical analysis andnumerical simulation were examined in the evolution process, and the effects ofneighboring connections were particular investigated to study the preferentialattachment mechanisms in the evolution. Since road network is a weightedplanar graph, the growth model for urban street networks was subsequentlymodeled. It succeeded in reproducing diverse patterns and each pattern wasexamined by a series of measures. The similarity between the properties of derived patterns and empirical studies implies that there is a universal growthmechanism in the evolution of urban morphology. To better understand the complicated relationship between land use and roadnetwork, centrality indices from different aspects were fully analyzed in a casestudy over Stockholm. The correlation coefficients between different land-usetypes and road network centralities suggest that various centrality indices, reflecting human activities in different ways, can capture land development andconsequently influence urban structure. The strength of this thesis lies in its interdisciplinary approaches to analyze andmodel urban growth. The integration of ‘bottom-up’ land-use simulation androad network growth model in urban growth simulation is the major contribution. The road network growth model in terms of complex network science is anothercontribution to advance spatial network modeling within the field of GIScience. The works in this thesis vary from a novel theoretical weighted network modelto the particular models of land use, urban street network and hybrid urbangrowth, and to the specific applications and statistical analysis in real cases. These models help to improve our understanding of urban growth phenomenaand urban morphological evolution through long-term simulations. Thesimulation results can further support urban planning and growth management. The study of hybrid models integrating methods and techniques frommultidisciplinary fields has attracted a lot attention and still needs constantefforts in near future. /
QC 20130514
