The Correlation between Land-use Mixture and Home-based Trips (The case of the city of Richmond)

Ma, Yin-Shan 22 March 2012 (has links)
The city of Richmond has practiced mixed land-use policies to encourage non-private-vehicle commuting for decades based on the successful examples or the empirical evidence of other cities. However, the idea violates one of common logical fallacy—“all things are equal.” Using the indices of land-use diversity, this study explores the correlation between land-use mixture and home-based trip for the city of Richmond. This paper calculates two common indices of land-use mixture—entropy, and dissimilarity. The results indicate that although Richmond’s land-use mixture and home-based trip do have a correlation, the correlation is weak. One possible reason is that socioeconomic actors have a stronger influence on transportation than land-use mixture. However, this assumption still needs further analysis in order to be verified.

Analyse comparative des différents produits satellitaires d'estimation des précipitations en Amazonie brésilienne / comparative analysis of different satellite products for estimation of precipitation in the Brazilian Amazon / Análise comparativa dos diferentes produtos de satélite para estimativa de precipitação na Amazônia Brasileira

Delahaye, Florian 15 April 2013 (has links)
This wide geographical area is characterized by a sparse and heterogeneous rain gauges network, which limits an exhaustive monitoring of rainfall. Remote sensing is then the preferred tool to fill this gap space. However, quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE) derived from spectral Infrared (IR) and Microwave (MW), or multi-channel techniques suffer from errors. Sources of uncertainty and bias of QPE may come from the sensor calibration, the algorithms and sampling of rain fields. In this thesis, the evaluation of algorithms TRMM3B42(v6), CMORPH and PERSIANN relies on a rain gauges database which reliability is assured by rigorous quality control. Over the period 2003-2009, the inter comparison of satellite products show low agreement (coefficient of determination < 0.30) with reference database in the Legal brazilian Amazon. TRMM3B42(v6) has the best performance with a correct sampling of rain fields. In addition, a case study shows that satellite QPE errors are larger in the forest, including the product MW MWCOMB. Finally, the satellite grids correction by PDF Matching allows a detailed and improved climatologically analysis compared with reference database / Circulações atmosféricas sinóticas e locais explicam a variabilidade espaço-temporal das chuvas na Amazônia brasileira.

Proposta de procedimentos para a estimativa da infiltração potencial e do escoamento superficial Hortoniano potencial baseada em dados geológicos, geotécnicos, de uso e ocupação e eventos de chuva / Proposal of procedures for potential infiltration and Hortonian overland flow estimation based on geological, geotechnical, land uses and rainfall events data

Failache, Moisés Furtado 13 April 2018 (has links)
The objective of this thesis was to propose a set of procedures to obtain geological and geotechnical and land uses data, and integrate then in order to estimate and analyze the potential infiltration and Hortonian overland flow of a region. The study regions included the IBGE sheets from São Carlos and Araraquara, located in the centre east portion of São Paulo State-Brazil. The used methods included engineering geological mapping; elaboration of structured 3D geological models; selection of rainfall events; chemical and physical characterization of groundwater; fieldwork; laboratory and in situ tests and application of pedotransfer functions. From these procedures, the various infiltration conditions were defined and the geological and geotechnical variability of the geological materials was characterized, which permitted to select the most adequate parameters and integrating them into Chu (1978) infiltration model. The potential infiltration and Hortonian overland flow varied significantly, depending on the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the geological materials and rainfall event types. The 65 infiltration condition units obtained were classified based on the infiltration curves and potential infiltration values into 5 groups with different characteristics. By associating these groups with the study regions, it was possible to identify the main potential areas of infiltration and generation of Hortonian overland flow, as well as to understand its relation with environmental functions associated with water dynamics. Based on the results, it is concluded that is essential to characterize adequately the geological and geotechnical variability of geological materials to estimate reliably the potential infiltration. The characterization should taking into account the whole variety of data obtaining methods, such as laboratory and in situ tests, and application of pedotransfer functions. In studies related to water dynamics, it is fundamental to integrate different data and to consider the seasonality of land uses and management practices and rainfall event types. The proposed set of procedures permitted to analyze in a simple, quantitative and appropriate way the potential infiltration and the generation of the Hortonian overland flow, constituting an appropriate tool for regional territorial planning and water management.

Ventura Pujolar, Montserrat 06 May 2005 (has links)
Social territorial conflicts and public participation in water management in the Muga river basin (Alt Empordà) focuses on conflicts generated by the management of Mediterranean rivers and examines the role of active and legally binding public participation in resolving conflicts and managing water resources. Specifically, the study set out to achieve five aims:Theoretical aims- To demonstrate that there are two antagonistic (radically opposed) positions - anthropocentrism and ecocentrism - in the social, scientific, and management spheres that generate conflict and impede a sustainable integrated management of river resources. Study material: human exceptionalism and deep ecology in society; water regulatory and river ecology disciplines in science; the anthropocentric contract and ecocentric balance in management; environmental discourse (the anthropic and ecosystemic river).- To determine whether public participation strategies (involving social agents) provide greater guarantees than unilateral decision-making processes (whether arbitrary or authoritarian) of resolving and preventing destructive conflicts in the area of water and river resources. Study material: definition of positive conflict; cooperation and consensus building in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and 13 case studies of water conflicts that were resolved in western United States; conditions for an integrated, adaptive, and participative management plan, and the San Joaquin River Management Plan (California, United States).Practical aims. Muga River Basin (Alt Empordà)- To contextualise the diversification and intensification of the use of water against a background of changing land uses, a process which rapidly gained ground from the 1960s onwards and became a source of social territorial conflict in the 1980s.Study material: land-use maps and statistics from 1957 and 1993 for the Muga river basin (49 municipalities in the Alt Empordà region and a total surface area of 1,050 km2). Retrospective analysis of forested, water-covered, cultivated, and developed areas.- To identify and describe tensions and conflicts over water use and the different solutions adopted between 1980 and 2000. To determine if certain structural solutions have become a source of confrontation in the medium or long term, and to assess the likelihood of future conflicts. Study material: 50 water supply incidents (26 tensions and 24 conflicts) and 53 measures adopted to resolve these incidents between 1980 and 2000 (12 demand-management measures and 41 supply-management actions); differentiation between two areas of the Muga river basin (interior and plain).- To discern which water issues are the source of discord among the different socio-economic, technical, and political agents participating in the MUGA project's focus group sessions. To determine if new participative strategies in the near future are necessary and likely to succeed.Study material: The MUGA project: management of Muga water resources with agent participation. Muga river basin study (Girona), 2000/03 - Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and University of Girona (UdG); conflicting opinions among the 30 participants in the four focus-group sessions held on water use and management in the Muga river basin; 6 conflictive issues, 14 sub-issues, and 31 points of dispute, 9 of which were sources of intense conflict (destructive and indicative of inappropriate river basin management).

Alternative land uses to forestry in the Western Cape : a case study of La Motte plantation

Fernandes Ruiz, Ricardo 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The South African government started the restructuring process of the state’s forest assets in 1998. The privatisation process includes all the assets of the South African Forestry Company (SAFCOL) and half of the former homelands’ 150 000 hectares of forest. In August 2000 SAFCOL released their “Operational Plan for Implementing Exit from Forestry in the Southem-Cape Portion of the Western Cape Region”. This plan identified only major land uses (agriculture, forestry, and conservation). A more detailed and intensive land evaluation study was required to specify land utilisation types that are tailor-made to each land unit of the study area. The main intention of this research study is to develop a more detailed evaluation process that elaborates on the land uses proposed by SAFCOL, which is site-specific in terms of the type of agricultural system to be used on specific areas, or the type of indigenous vegetation to be restored in conservation areas. La Motte plantation was taken as the case study and the SAFCOL digital database for the study area was used as the input data. The Automated Land Evaluation System (ALES) was the computer software package used to build the expert system to evaluate land according to the method presented in the FAO 1976 report. The ALES model built in this research study had 15 decision trees (one per land utilisation type) resulting in a total of 1678 branches, which relate land characteristics to severity levels of land qualities. During the computation of an evaluation ALES attempts to place each map unit into one of the four severity levels of land qualities within each landutilisation type. Physical suitability of each land unit for each land utilisation type was determined by the maximum limitation method. ALES is not a GIS and does not by itself display maps. The evaluation result matrix was exported into ArcMap for further optimisation and geographical analysis to enable the spatial representation of the results. After completion, taking into account the theoretical background, optimal terrain units were identified for the different land uses considered and the results are presented as tables and maps. Fynbos is the most suitable alternative land use for the study area followed by Pears, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vines. Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines were least suitable as alternatives. The study found that the SAFCOL’s database is not sufficient to meet the requirements of a detailed site-specific land evaluation process. The polygon attribute table of the soil coverage only provided a subset of the land characteristics necessary to build and run the model. Data fields like soil form, depth, drainage, wetness, terrain type, aspect and climatic information had to be created because most of the data provided were in a non-digital form. The database was not complete and more precise data are needed to improve the system.
