Trincas nas calçadas e espécies muito utilizadas na arborização: comparação entre Sibipiruna ( Caesalpinia pluviosa Dc.) e Falsa-murta (Murraya paniculata (L.) Jacq.), no município de Piracicaba/SP / Cracks in sidewalks and species widely used in forestry: comparison between Sibipiruna (Caesalpinia pluviosa Dc.) e Falsa-murta (Murraya paniculata (L.) Jacq.), In Piracicaba/SP

The urban forestry offers several benefits for the population and their need is increasing with the growth of cities. But like other urban equipment, there is cost of implementation, maintenance, and also losses. Among the potential damage of urban forestry, are paving the damage to structures and construction. This study aimed to identify the parameters that influence the damage and assist in the definition of public policies for urban forestry. The study was based on an inventory of urban forestry of the city of Piracicaba, in 15 districts. For the entire inventory, the units were identified and depths based on soil survey Pedológica semidetailed the city of Piracicaba. Was used for analysis of cracks in the sidewalk, a tree species, the sibipiruna (Caesalpinia rainy Dc.), And a bush, the falsa-murta (Murraya paniculata (L.) Jacq.), There is a concept widely widespread, that the shrub species, do not cause damage to the paving, while the trees are known to damage the sidewalks. In collecting field and focuses on the following: address, sort, tree removed or replaced, CAP, bed size, lap paved, pruning of shoots, damaged urban structure, and material conditions of the pavement of the floor. The rate of elimination of falsa-murta was equal to the sibipiruna (1.7%), whereas 89.2% of falsa-murta and 92.6% of sibipiruna were not replaced by other species. For the falsemyrtle, the concentration of individuals, was in the range of CAP 21 to 80 cm (82.9%), 70.2% had cracks in the sidewalk and 29.8% no broken; 44.6% of individuals had bed tree to 0.20 m2, 92.3% of individuals have suffered as bad pruning and 75.1% of individuals were in sidewalk cement. For sibipiruna, the concentration of individuals was in the range of 101 to 160 CAP cm (57.0%), 99.4% had cracks in the sidewalk and 0.6% absence of cracks, 44.6% of individuals were planted in locations classified as uncertain beds trees, 94.6% of individuals have suffered as bad pruning and sidewalk was the most common cement with 63.1% of individuals. The depth of soil had no influence on whether or not cause cracks in the two species. With the statistical analysis (Chi-square) could be countered some concepts available in urban forestry, concluding that the damage also shrubs and pruning influence the damage to sidewalks, among others. There is no simple solution to eliminate the conflict between the trees and road equipment and urban structures. The people need and should be informed about all parameters, options, benefits and harm of each action that stimulate or inhibit the planting of a tree in the sidewalk.

Percepção e quantificação das árvores na área urbana do município de São Carlos, SP / Perception and quantification of trees in the urban area of São Carlos, SP

Viana, Sabrina Mieko 20 June 2013 (has links)
The trees, as one of the most meaningful elements connecting people with the nature, and the usual exclusion of this element due the competition with other urban infrastructures, may be interpreted as a symptom of inhabitants alienation from natural environment.. By considering this scenario, is important for the management improvement know the structure and distribution of the urban forests as well as comprehend how people are related with the environment and the trees, in order to know the causes and how to work for different sectors of the population. The study aimed at contributing to the knowledge expansion on indexes to quantify and analyze the Tree Canopy Cover (TCC), using as model of the city of São Carlos (SP, Brazil), as well as assess the relationship between the residents perception and the amount of TCC. Images of satellite Worldview 2 were used for quantify and analyze the distribution of TCC and the UFI. Moreover the perception of the population was surveyed by using structured questionnaires and direct observation in areas of different percentage of TCC. According to the results, even though the UFI (1,26) and the proportion of TCC (26,27%) are significant for the entire urban area, the values are not quite well distributed amongst the regions of the city. The highest values of TCC and UFI were concentrated in the north and northwest regions, while the lowest values were located in central and south areas. Excepting the universities campi (UFSCar and USP 2) and the industrial districts, the highest TCC percentage occurred in the Samambaia\'s gated community (29,6%) and the lowest in the Antenor Garcia, Cidade Aracy and President Collor neighborhoods (4,88%). Furthermore, the analysis of coverage within each region indicated the predominance of single trees or small groups, with low connectivity amongst them. The overall population recognizes benefits provided by the trees. However, attributed features such as \'dirt\', caused by fallen leaves, damaged sidewalks, safety problems related to violence and risk of tree falling, were associated by respondents as the biggest negatives points about the trees in the city.

Examination of Human Impacts on the Biodiversity and Ecology of Lichen and Moss Communities

Prather, Hannah Marie 06 June 2017 (has links)
Globally, more than half of the world's population is living in urban areas and it is well accepted that human activities (e.g. climate warming, pollution, landscape homogenization) pose a multitude of threats to ecosystems. Largely, human-related impacts on biodiversity will hold consequences for larger ecological processes and research looking into human impacts on sensitive epiphytic lichen and moss communities is an emerging area of research. While seemingly small, lichen and moss communities exist on nearly every terrestrial ecosystem on Earth and contribute to whole-system processes (e.g. hydrology, mineral cycling, food web energetics) worldwide. To further examine human impacts on epiphytic communities, I conducted three studies examining urbanization and climate warming effects on epiphytic lichen and moss biodiversity and ecology. In the first study I revisited a historic urban lichen community study to assess how urban lichen communities have responded to regional air quality changes occurring over the last nearly two decades. I further investigated, for the first time, the biodiversity of urban tree canopy-dwelling lichen communities in a native coniferous tree species, Pseudotsuga menziesii. I found that urban parks and forested areas harbor a species rich community of lichens epiphytes. Further, I found evidence for the distinct homogenization of urban epiphytic lichen communities, suggesting that expanding beyond simplistic measures of biodiversity to consider community composition and functional biodiversity may be necessary when assessing the ecology and potential ecosystem services of epiphyte communites within urbanizing landscapes. Next, I present the first tall tree canopy study across a regional gradient of urbanization near Portland, Oregon, USA. I found that tall tree canopy epiphyte communities change dramatically along gradients of increasing urbanization, most notably by the transitioning of species functional groups from sensitive, oligotrophic species to a dominance of urban-tolerant, eutrophic species. The implications these dramatic shifts in species composition have on essential PNW ecosystem processes, like N-fixation and canopy microclimate regulation, is still not well understood and is difficult to formally evaluate. However, I find strong evidence that native conifer trees in urban areas may provide a diversity of essential ecosystem services, including providing stratified habitat for epiphyte communities and their associated micro arthropod communities and the scavenging of atmospherically deposited nutrients. Future work is needed to understand how losses in canopy N fixation and species with large biomass (both lichens and bryophytes) will affect nutrient and hydrologic cycling in the PNW region, which continue to undergo rapid growth and urbanization. The final chapter investigates the impacts of passive warming by Open Top Chambers (OTCs) in moss-dominated ecosystems located on the Western Antarctic Peninsula, an area of increasing climate warming. I compared species-specific temperature effects, moss canopy morphology, sexual reproductive effort and invertebrate communities between OTC and control moss communities for two moss species, Polytrichastrum alpinum and Sanionia uncinata, that make up over 65% of the terrestrial vegetative cover in the area. I found distinct reproductive shifts in P. alpinum under passive warming compared to controls. Moss communities under warming also had substantially larger total invertebrate communities than those in control moss communities, and invertebrate communities were significantly affected by moss species and moss reproductive effort. Further, substantial species-specific thermal differences among contiguous patches of these dominant moss species were revealed. These results suggest that continued warming will differentially impact the reproductive output of Antarctic moss species and is likely to dramatically alter terrestrial ecosystems dynamics from the bottom up. This combined work provides a diverse contribution to the field of epiphyte ecology and biology by providing new insights on how human impacts will affect epiphyte lichen and moss communities across diverse ecosystems, in light of a rapidly changing planet.

Partizipative Prozesse in stadtnahen Waldlandschaften am Beispiel von Kommunalwäldern in Deutschland / Participatory processes in peri-urban forest landscapes illustrated using the example of community forests in Germany

Böhnke-Förster, Pia Maria Petra 06 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Political elections represent the conventional form of public participation at the municipal level and create the foundations for decision making. In addition to these legally anchored forms of public participation, non-institutionalised forms of participation stemming from cooperative democracy are increasingly becoming the focus of scientific and social discourse. The research presented herein focused on community forestry in Germany and represented an attempt to find answers to six questions. (1) How are citizen participation methods currently used? (2) How can participation processes be characterised? (3) What is the intention behind Tit? (4) What framework is required for utilisation? (5) In which situations is participation an alternative method to top-down decision making? (6) In which mode and at what level of organisation and intensity can participatory approaches be integrated in communal administration structures? Among this backdrop there is the tumultuous occupation of urban space that combined with the suppression of soil coverage and vegetation leads to the urban runoff higher volume, pollution and shorter time to peak discharge. In this context, the benefits of urban afforestation are present, which besides the aesthetic value added to space, set up physical barriers to stormwater, favoring its retention, storage and infiltration into the soil. This study aims to evaluate the capacity of rainfall interception treetops the some species, reduce the volume of urban runoff, slow the flow peaks, as well as to expand the attention span of an urban watershed. The research was field experiments with recurrent arboreal species in the urban afforestation of Uruaçu, Goiás, using pluviographs, trunk collectors and water level sensor. From the use of interception parameters determined in this study, computer simulations using the Storm Water Management Model Model (SWMM) were performed, starting from the proposition of scenarios with different types of territorial installment associated with the Low Impact Development practices (LID) and urban forestry. During the data collection period 2012/2013, the rainfall events had a median of accumulated rainfall of 16.7mm. During this period, the median values of interception were Mangifera indica - 8.0mm; Pachira aquatica - 7.4mm; Licania tomentosa - 7.2mm; and Caesalpinia peltophoroides - 4.8mm. The period of data collection relating to 2013/2014, the median precipitation of rainfall events were 20.7mm, and the median values for interception and stemflow were respectively: 5.7mm and 0.1mm for Mangifera indica; 4.5mm and 0.2mm for Licania tomentosa; and 3.8mm and 0.3mm for Tabebuia ochracea. The delay at the start of average rains caused by tree species was 3min. The presence of individual trees afforded a median delay in the peak time of 3 min, a reduction of the peak flow of 0.8 mm/min and runoff of 4.7mm/min. Through simulations with the scenario where the wooded urban planning aggregated all LID techniques employed in this study, it was possible to achieve a reduction in peak flows in 3.42m³ / s, compared to conventional design; allowing storage of a volume of water in 4470.59m³ local infiltration proposed structures; and delay the peak flows of up to 6 min. This thesis confirms the interference of the individual characteristics of the species in the rain interception capability by their canopies and reducing runoff, highlighting the need for careful definition of the species that make up the urban forestry; testifies the existence of variations in interceptions in relation to rainfall events and during their occurrence; as well as quantitative data points precipitate volume reduction and drained by the tree individual presence in urban areas. Their research shows that, alone, afforestation and LID techniques cause little reduction in volume and flow and little delay in time to peak flow, while combined contribute significantly to drainage. This study differs from the use of recording rain gauges and linígrados for the measurement of precipitation and runoff directly under the canopy of individual trees in an urban environment; and adds to SWMM the insertion of arboreal benefits in hydrological simulation.

Qualidade ambiental urbana do Distrito da Liberdade, município de São Paulo (SP) / Urban environmental quality of the District of Liberdade, in the city of São Paulo (SP)

Eltiza Rondino Vasques 25 August 2017 (has links)
Urbanization, when not properly planned, potentiates adverse environmental impacts and damage to the health of the population because it brings with it changes in the biological and physical environment, due to the plugging of watercourses, changes in the geomorphology of the land, soil sealing, vegetation depletion, building verticalization, among other factors. By knowing the urban environmental quality in already established cities, one can identify negative environmental aspects and impacts resulting from human actions, as well as plan and propose improvements that enhance the well-being of the population and reduce health problems caused by urbanization. This work aims to determine the level of urban environmental quality, considering variables that cause negative and positive urban environmental impact, in the district of Liberdade, in the city of São Paulo, State of São Paulo, Brazil. For determining the level of environmental quality, the following environmental attributes were evaluated, adapted and expanded from Nucci (1996): potentially polluting usages; car and bus traffic; noise pollution; inundation and floods; population density; verticalization of buildings and constructions; water supply and sewage collection; solid waste collection; condition of sidewalks; and presence of free public spaces, green areas, vegetation cover and urban forestry. For each of these attributes, indices were determined to quantify and indicate the level of environmental quality of the areas studied. Since the occurrence of a potentially polluting usage interferes with the environment with various environmental impacts, potentially polluting usages have had a major influence on the classification of environmental quality in the district. The District of Liberdade features, overall, moderate traffic in all its streets and avenues, buses travel in most of the district\'s roads, and the pollution index exceeds the levels of assessment criteria for external environments determined by current regulations. Areas in which floods have been recorded are located predominantly in the North of the district, near the Moringuinho stream. The District of Liberdade is predominantly vertical, and this process tends to continue since there are several areas in the process of being regularized for the construction of new buildings. As for sanitation, 100% of the population are served by water supply, 98.5% for sewage collection and treatment, and 100% for household waste collection. The sidewalks in the district are predominantly of medium capability, areas with vegetation cover correspond to 8.3% of the district area, and the index of free public spaces is 2.12 m² per inhabitant.

Tree parameters’ impact on visual perception, preference, and recreation

Gerstenberg, Tina 20 September 2017 (has links) (PDF)
There is a large body of empirical evidence that nature delivers benefits to people. In the face of progressive urbanisation, urban nature and its design are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, climate change endangers biological diversity and consequently ecosystem functioning. Thus, for urban landscape planners who consider both ecosystem health and residential well-being, it is attractive to simultaneously increase plant diversity and the recreational value of urban nature. The present dissertation investigates the role of tree parameters for perception, preference, and recreation and elucidates how findings can contribute to human and ecosystem health in cities. In a first study, the following tree parameters were identified to be relevant to perception: Conifers versus deciduous trees, crown height to crown width ratio, crown size to trunk height ratio, and crown density. These results add to previous studies, as they are based on more realistic-looking images. Furthermore, the parameters are metric, were generated by study participants and represent a hierarchy. Two further studies demonstrated that the greater the crown relative to trunk height, the more pleasant and the more beautiful a tree is perceived and the denser a crown, the heavier and the more rugged a tree is perceived. Both parameters predict tree preference. This is consistent with theories and previous findings on landscape perception and adds more precise parameters for tree preference prediction to the literature. A fourth study revealed no effects of tree characteristics’ diversity in urban green spaces on how fascinating and coherent they are perceived. This suggests that species diversity in green spaces can be increased without reducing restorativeness.

Tree parameters’ impact on visual perception, preference, and recreation

Gerstenberg, Tina 20 June 2017 (has links)
The identified tree parameters can be used to select various, similar-looking species to increase both human well-being and ecosystem health. Furthermore, the knowledge on the tree parameters’ semantic meaning can facilitate expert-lay communication. The preferred tree characteristics can be used to increase residential satisfaction. Finally, tree species diversity in urban green spaces can be increased without mitigating the recreational value.
