Duarte, Aline Graziele Godoy January 2008 (has links)
This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted to know the acceptance and use of Virtual Learning Environments made to know the acceptance and the use by students and teachers of the nursing technical course of the "Centro Paula Souza". We use as theoretical contribution the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, which brings together the eight main theories about acceptance and use of technology. Data collection was done through a websurvey with 167 students and 83 teachers from the 58 state technical schools of the "Centro Paula Souza", in the state of São Paulo - Brazil, of the nursing technicians training course. Data analysis was carried out through calculations of measurements, numerical and categorical summaries, due to their descriptive character. The study population believes that the use of the Virtual Learning Environment can help it to improve performance in the work/school (expectation of performance), being more expressive among the teachers in relation to the students; both believe in the infrastructure offered by the “C.P.S.” (facilitating conditions), more significantly among male teachers. Believing and trusting in technology can be a key factor for the acceptance and use of technology, and ensuring adequate infrastructure, which provides support in the performance of activities, is a crucial factor for continued use. / This research presents a reflection on the creative use of technological resources in a didactic way, exploring the use of digital media in schools. The use of digital media in education is a challenge with many open questions, such as: Why and how to use digital media in education? What types of media should be used?, among others. The use of digital media everywhere and the ease of their use by young people has pointed the need for adaptation by the teaching and learning processes and the main actors involved in this process, in order to continue preparing and developing critical and active citizens. In all parts of the world, evolving technology is the main force that is transforming society. In order to collect data and reflect on digital technologies in education and the emerging issue of so-called digital natives, a term created by the american Marc Prensky in 2001, a literature search was held initially to support such concepts. It was later conducted a field research in a sample of students and teachers of the academic community, held in two high schools, one public and one private. To that end, it applied the questionnaire technical in each group of actors. The results were analyzed and compared with the goal of validate the initial research questions and contribute to discuss the challenges and possibilities of the use of technology in education. The research demonstrated that it is necessary to study the concept of digital media in education, in order to guide professionals and students in this field. It is necessary an academic look to offer new forms of motivation for learning through the creative use of media and technology available.

Innovation Difussion of Smartphone in Nigeria

Iyanda, Olukunle Ariyo 01 January 2016 (has links)
Rapid diffusion and use of smartphones in Africa are challenging, given the state of its infrastructural facilities. The problem addressed was a lack of information on the adoption behavior and the sociodevelopmental effect of smartphone acceptance among rural and urban users in Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to examine the adoption behavior and the sociodevelopmental effect of smartphone acceptance among rural and urban residents. Research questions examined the relationship of performance expectancy, social influence, price value, and habit on adopters' intentions to use smartphones, continued use of smartphones, and the sociodevelopmental effect on smartphone users lives and standard of living. The theoretical foundation of the study was based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, and expectation confirmation theory. A nonexperimental cross-sectional survey design was used to collect and analyze data obtained from the target population of approximately 14 million with a sample size of 385 based on 95% confidence level. Survey data were collected using a research instrument developed by Bhattacherjee, Venkatesh, and others and analyzed via multivariate regression. Findings indicated that the positive effect of performance expectancy on intent to use smartphones was stronger among urban than among rural dwellers. No other location-moderated relationships were found. There was a strong positive correlation (β = .761, p < .001) between intent to use smartphones and continued use of smartphones. The findings of this study may promote social change by providing valuable data to service providers and regulators for realignment of investment strategies and the reevaluation of national policies on communication technology development.

The influence of indigenous African culture on SME adoption of digital government services in Zambia

Yavwa, Yakomba 02 1900 (has links)
Many low-income countries desire to implement and adopt digital government as a springboard for economic and social development but face many challenges. The United Nations identifies that Africa has especially lagged consistently in digital government development and adoption. Most scholars largely attribute the challenges to infrastructure and skills, and often rhetorically cite culture as playing a strong role. This study specifically examined the role of indigenous African culture (‘spirituality’, ‘communalism’ and ‘respect for authority and elders’) and internet access on the adoption of digital government services (e-filing and e-payment of taxes) by Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) in Zambia, with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technologies (UTAUT) as the underpinning theoretical lens. Data analysis was done using Structural Equation Modelling with principal attention given to the moderating and mediating influence of indigenous African culture. The influence of internet access on the intention to adopt digital government was also examined. The findings from the cross sectional study of 401 tax registered SMEs suggests that ‘spirituality’, ‘African communalism’ and ‘respect for authority and elders’ have significant negative moderating effects on the adoption of e-filing but not on e-payment; and ‘spirituality’, ‘African communalism’ and ‘respect for authority and elders’ are all significant mediators of the intention to adopt both e-filing and e-payment. This means that indigenous African culture plays a significant role in explaining Africa’s position in digital government development and adoption. The findings also showed a negative influence of internet access on the intention to adopt digital government services despite the measures that government has put in place. These results make a novel contribution to Information Systems (IS) theory in identifying a critical yet often overlooked indigenous cultural influence on the adoption of digital innovations in low-income countries. The findings also calls for finding new or adapted IS theories that take into account such unique cultural constructs. The thesis recommends that the research is extended to other low-income countries as well as other contexts that exhibit strong indigenous cultural values. / School of Computing / Ph. D.
