Graphical user interface framework for EarlabWoodard, Jon Lenley January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / The Earlab Project at Boston University Hearing Research Center (HRC), http://earlab.bu.edu, is a computational simulation system created by the HRC to allow researchers to run simulations efficiently, using software representations of physiological pathways. The existing complexity of Earlab presents difficulty for users who may wish to adjust the parameters necessary to change from models of the ear to models that simulate other physiological pathways. To address this difficulty, several approaches were explored to assist in formulating a new framework for editing files associated with Earlab. XML, a mark-up language, was used to derive a series of prototype XML based documents as replacements for existing Earlab files. Microsoft Visual Studio and C# was then used to create a prototype of a graphical user interface that is capable of displaying an XML based document in a visual manner. The resulting framework shows the process of the intake of an XML document of an sample Earlab model, the presentation of the model in a graphical framework and the ability to edit the model and receive feedback on the suitability of values in the model.

An intelligent modelling interface for process simulators in process industriesClark, Graham Adrian January 2001 (has links)
Over the past three decades, modelling packages for chemical processes have become more advanced and widely used. For example, equation-oriented dynamic simulators, such as gPROMS are useful for simulating plantwide processes as well as unit operations, and are widely used by process engineers. Whereas, other types of simulator (e.g. Simulink) are often used by control engineers to solve complex control problems. However, both these types of simulator rely on the user being proficient in modelling and familiar with their syntax beforehand. A useful development would be the integration of some knowledge into the formation of the process models and automatic syntax code generation. This would lead to the design engineers having a library of knowledge to check on first, much as an expert engineer uses their past experiences to help guide them through a design. If this could be incorporated into a modelling interface this would greatly help the design engineer, especially when tackling problems in areas that they have little, or no experience. The thesis addresses this problem and describes the design of an intelligent modelling interface that incorporates a knowledge base using some form of a priori case library and recall facility. The interface also incorporates an automatic input file generation stage. At present, the user can: specify a single unit operation problem to search for, retrieve similar cases from the database, specify their solution in the database based on past cases and experience, and then automatically generate an input file for either gPROMS or Simulink. These features are demonstrated through four case studies.

Over the past decade, the IT business have shown tremendous growth specially in the area of services for both internal and external customers. As the development of these services continuous to increases so does the need to be able to present documentations of the services in an effective and useable way. TeliaSonera is one of the companies that have problems reaching its customers with information about the various services they offer, and is currently wanting to develop a system to provide to its customers to elevate this growing problem. The current system that is deployed by TeliaSonera has major issues when it comes to finding the right record or documentation which leads to that customer end up spending more time than intended and this in turn ends in customer dissatisfaction and the use of offered services decreases as well. This project aims to firstly create a requirement specification for the system that TeliaSonera needs to effectively resolve the issues they have and secondly use the requirement specification to develop a prototype for the presentation of the various services offered. The waterfall method was used when creating the requirement specification, which involved a group consisting of one system administrator and four users. By gathering the input from the group a requirement specification was created. The requirement specification was then used to develop the prototype, which included a REST API and a user interface. The usability tests that were performed comparing the current system with the prototype indicates that the prototype is providing a platform to users that enables them to decrease the time spent on finding the request information. Furthermore the usability tests indicates that by providing a very detailed and specific website almost all employees will be able to use the system. Another benefit that the usability tests showed was that users learned to use the system very effectively after the initial run and that the users retained the knowledge over time.

Adaptive Planning and Prediction in Agent-Supported Distributed Collaboration.Hartness, Ken T. N. 12 1900 (has links)
Agents that act as user assistants will become invaluable as the number of information sources continue to proliferate. Such agents can support the work of users by learning to automate time-consuming tasks and filter information to manageable levels. Although considerable advances have been made in this area, it remains a fertile area for further development. One application of agents under careful scrutiny is the automated negotiation of conflicts between different user's needs and desires. Many techniques require explicit user models in order to function. This dissertation explores a technique for dynamically constructing user models and the impact of using them to anticipate the need for negotiation. Negotiation is reduced by including an advising aspect to the agent that can use this anticipation of conflict to adjust user behavior.

Establishing a framework for an African Genome ArchiveSouthgate, Jamie January 2019 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The generation of biomedical research data on the African continent is growing, with numerous studies realizing the importance of African genetic diversity in discoveries of human origins and disease susceptibility. The decrease in
costs to purchase and utilize such tools has enabled research groups to produce
datasets of significant scientific value. However, this success story has resulted
in a new challenge for African Researchers and institutions. An increase in
data scale and complexity has led to an imbalance of infrastructure and skills
to manage, store and analyse this data
