This dissertation has as its main subject of investigation the official commemorations of the Biennium of the Colonization and Immigration that took place in Rio Grande do Sul in 1974 and 1975. Promoted by the State government, these commemorations were motivated by the upcoming 150th anniversary of the German Immigration and the 100th anniversary of the Italian Immigration. The initial goal of these celebrations was to honor the different immigrant groups who contributed to the ethnic composition of the State. However, during the commemorative process, the tributes were extended to include homage to native and Afro-descendent Brazilians, thus, changing the initial official discourse. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to make explicit how the government of Rio Grande do Sul used the immigrant past of the State during the commemorations of the Biennium of the Colonization and Immigration. To this end, the analysis of the commemorative process is constructed in three periods: 1) The organization of the celebrations. We analyzed the decree instituting the festivities, which determined actions to be taken during the commemorative process and the official ceremony opening the celebrations in the presence of the State government authorities. We also investigated the formation of the Tribute Commissions, composed by individuals authorized by the government, who were also responsible for the creation of the Commemorative Programs of their respective ethnic groups. Also, we mapped the municipalities participating in the festivities, and quantified and qualified the celebratory acts promoted in face of the dismembering of the Official Program. 2) The commemorations honoring the Luso-Brazilian pioneering, the 150th anniversary of German immigration, and the 100th anniversary of Italian immigration. By analyzing the reenactment of the arrival of German and Italian immigrants having as spectator President Ernesto Geisel, the promotion of events and creation of institutions incentivizing the studies of the immigrant history in the State, and the building of monuments, we confirmed the emphasis given to the celebration of these three groups. 3) The celebratory acts promoted in honor of native and Afro-descendent Brazilians. We analyzed the process extending the tributes to these ethnic groups, and its resulting change in the official discourse of these commemorations.

Batista Rodrigues Leite, Letticia 10 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis proposes a study of the ancient and modern uses of a passage from the second Book of the Iliad, known since the 5th century before our era under the designation « Catalogue of Ships ». This passage became a sort of paradigm of a particular mode of utterance, the « catalogue mode of enunciation » (καταλέγειν), which great number of the modern studies had interpreted as an ideal way to describe the reality of the past in a discursive order closely related to the transmission of a « truth », or rather being in the origins of the writing of history. We assume that this reading had an impact on a number of modern studies and it is a consequence of them as well. Such impacts are far from being meaningless, once they had led to consider the catalogue as a document judged reliable to find the « Homeric Greece » and, who knows, to answer to other « Homeric questions». The status of « catalogue » in this passage nevertheless echoes the practice which, as other studies had shown, goes back not only to the diversity of the poetical production from the archaic period - including the Iliad where this practice presents itself as an original interlocution mode - but extends it far beyond. On turning towards some ancient uses of the speeches in catalogue, particularly the ones from the Catalogue of Ships, we aim to understand to what other functions (those being close or not from the ones identified by the modern texts) this enunciative practice answers and how they appear in the dialectic with the previous texts concerned and with their own issues.

Brukade bilder : Södra Skandinaviens hällristningar ur ett historiebruksperspektiv / Images in Use : South Scandinavian Rock Art from a Uses of the Past-Perspective

Nilsson, Per January 2017 (has links)
The timeframe of the south Scandinavian rock art tradition extends from c.1700/1600 to 300 /200 BC. The chronological boundaries of the rock art phenomenon thereby coincide roughly with the timeframe of the Nordic Bronze Age, and rock art figures have come to be understood and interpreted as a Bronze Age phenomenon. It is argued that a dominant Bronze Age narrative has come to direct the discourse and fieldwork alike towards a focus on the origin , rather than the use, of rock art. The rock carver’s intention with the image, explicitly or implicitly, has come to equate with its meaning. The aim of the thesis is to approach rock art figures from a different perspective, with the aim of understanding how south Scandinavian rock art has been used and interpreted over time. The question of what archaeological evidence the use of rock art may have left behind is taken up, and the archaeological excavations carried out at rock art sites in southern Scandinavia are summarized and discussed. The survey shows that finds and features date to some extent from the Bronze Age, yet most of the dateable evidence comes from periods after the tradition of creating new images had ended, especially the Early Iron Age. This phenomenon is of particular interest given the explicit uses of the past-perspective of the thesis. It is argued that some of the rock art sites were still being used during later prehistoric periods. Other examples of later period´s uses of rock art sites are presented and discussed, such as runic inscriptions on rock art panels as well as the use of rock art and cup-mark sites during historic times.  A study of the chronological development of the rock art tradition in the Himmelstalund-region in the county of Östergötland is also presented, based on recently developed ship chronologies of rock art. The study shows that the earliest ship figures, which are found in the Himmelstalund area, were probably made in the Bronze Age period I/II. Yet the majority of the dateable ship figures date from the Bronze Age period II–III, after which the number of dateable ships declines in period IV, a development becoming even more prominent in period V-VI.  Another theme discussed in the thesis is archaeology’s own uses of rock art and how this has affected the interpretations of the material. The thesis shows it is feasible to combine a discussion on the prehistoric use of rock art sites and images with a critical view of interactions between archaeological and antiquarian practice and the source material. It has also shown the potential for a broadened discussion, where we regard the use of rock art, during the Bronze Age as well as during later periods, as integral and essential to rock art research.

Abreu, Gabriel Fleck de January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to present an analysis of the Brazilian soap-operas Escrava Isaura (Rede Globo, 1976) and Xica da Silva (Manchete, 1996) from the perspective of public uses of the past. Escrava Isaura was written by Gilberto Braga in a dictatorial context, adapting Bernardo Guimarães’s abolitionist novel about a white slave, while Xica da Silva was a free adaptation by Walcyr Carrasco of several memoirs about the historical character Francisca da Silva and her romance with a diamond mine owner and mining Governor of Arraial do Tejuco in the 18th century. For the twenty years between these two soap-operas, Brazilian historiography on slavery experienced many transformations while the Brazilian soap-opera developed as an industry with a increasing importance in the construction of national identity and the “Brazilian historical soap-opera” managed in a performative way the relations between past, present and future. This work poses these questions in dialogue with the soap-operas, reflecting upon the representation of the Brazilian slavery past in each one; the socio-political tensions reflected in these representations; and the ways Escrava Isaura and Xica da Silva balance and portray past, present, and future. This dissertation seeks to understand how the choices in each soap-opera convey the Brazilian slavery past and how they dialogue with the social, political and cultural contexts in which they were written, produced and broadcast.

Soares, Fabrício Antônio Antunes January 2011 (has links)
This work intends to elaborate on the narrative construction of the concepts of structure and subject in the book The Poverty of Theory of the English historian Edward Palmer Thompson (1924-1993). With the crisis of Marxism in 1956, left-wing intellectuals started to rethink Marxism as theory and as political practice. In the 1960s and 1970s the French philosopher Louis Althusser (1918-1990) acquired a great prestige in the English Marxist historiography through the members of the second new left. The book here analyzed is a response to the infiltration of Althusserian Marxism in England. The concepts of structure and subject are evaluated from three points of incorporation. First, the language market of the Thompson times; second, the book grammar which enables to understand the semantic and pragmatic rules of the text, and finally, an analysis of proper names and concepts that compose the text, from the problematic uses of past contained in words. Thus one can understand that the narrative constitution of concepts appears as a way of reframing the past in the historian writing to reconstruct the temporality cracked with Marxian crisis of 1956.

Bragoni, Beatriz 12 April 2018 (has links)
The nineteenth century in Spanish America exhibits a true saga of funeral ceremonies intended to exalt the role of great men in the configuration of the symbolic arsenal which contributed to molding the foundational mythology of nation-states. The Republican state language turned the association between hero, national body and posterity into a resource of the affirmation of national authority and social and political cohesion. Converted into keystones in the building of the national pantheon, State funerals carried out during the 19th century in the majority of the Spanish American republics became formidable instruments of political and cultural construction. Along these lines, the presen tarticle is occupied with contextualizing the slow process of placing José de San Martín as an Argentine national hero within the coordinates of 19th century European and Spanish American funerary rituals.
