Abstract: Rabies, a highly lethal disease, is still a great challenge to public health in Brazil and in many countries. Rabies may de eliminated and prevented within the urban area through efficient measures and interventions within the context of the community and the infection source. Its prophylaxis is important and should be adequate to each case after clinical examination and the filling of data on the notification card. Current analysis consists of a descriptive quantitative study to investigate rabies accidents with regard to the disease profile, behavior employed and filling of notification cards in a municipality in the northern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Within the 1057 rabies cases investigated, 70% revealed a behavior complying with the Health Ministry protocol, while 30% revealed inadequate behavior. Further, 6.9% of the latter failed to give sufficient information for an evaluation of the case; 16.1% did not warrant any protection; 7% warranted protection although behavior was not adequate. In current study aggression incidences reached 29.6/10,000 inhabitants. Highest risk in rabies accidents occurred in people within the 0 - <10 years and in the elderly (5.7/1000 inhabitants). Accidents against white people with primary schooling, without any gender difference, were prevalent. Most attendances were done by nurses in first aid clinics (Municipal Hospital and Health Nucleus). January and August were the months in which accidents most occurred, featuring bites predominantly on the hands and feet as single and peripheral wounds. Most people (71.8%) did not present any previous rabies prophylaxis. Healthy dogs which could be observed were the predominant animals in rabies accidents. Current investigation shows that 66.9% of people involved in rabies accidents underwent rabies prophylaxis even though most animals could be followed up. A high number of information gaps were found in the ... / Mestre

Since 1998 cases of rabies in bats have been recorded in the northwest region of São Paulo State, predominantly in urban areas. The objective of this study was to investigate the circulation of rabies in bats in the northwestern region of São Paulo by searching of the virus in different species and the presence of rabies neutralizing antibodies in vampire bats. A total of 1,490 brain samples from bats were sent to the Laboratory of Rabies and 125 serum samples of vampire bats from four shelters in the region were examined from 2008 to 2012. The virus presence was determined by fluorescent antibodies test (FAT) and mouse inoculation test (MIT) while neutralizing antibodies were determined by the simplified microneutralization (SFIMT) in BHK21 cells. Rabies virus was detected in 26 (1.97%) out of 1,314 non-hematophagous bats and in none of the 176 vampire bats examined. Only 7% (9/125) of vampire bats had antibody titers above 0.5UI/ml, 65% (81/125) had low titers (0.10 to 0.5UI/ml) and 28% (35/125) were negative. The positivity rate observed was 1.74% which is above the average rate of 1.3% recorded previously in this region. The high percentage of vampire bats with neutralizing antibodies to rabies virus indicates a recent exposure to the virus which confirms that surveillance measures must be in place to avoid an increase in disease occurrence

January 2012 (has links)
A grande maioria dos abrigos, cadastrados na região, são artificiais, correspondendo...(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletronico abaixo) / Abstract:The control of the Desmodus rotundus bats populations is one of the measures included in the National Program of Herbivores Rabies Control of the Agriculture Ministry, which also includes vaccination of animals, epidemiological surveillance and health education.

Casagrande, Daiene Karina Azevedo. January 2014 (has links)
Although bats remain the rabies epidemiological cycles for centuries, only in the last decades the rabies in bats had its recognition, throughout researches focused on the role of these animals in the epidemiological cycle of the disease and also on their variants and their implications in the development of new reservoirs for rabies virus, mainly in regions where the disease in dogs was controlled. The state of São Paulo, coordinated by the Institute Pasteur, performs epidemiological surveillance for rabies through registered laboratories for its diagnosis. The labs of Zoonosis Diagnostic Service, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science - UNESP - Botucatu - SP is registered for receiving material for diagnosis of some municipalities of the region. Between 2003 and 2010, 19 samples of nonhematophagous bats were diagnosed as positive by IFD and Biological Evidence. These isolates were antigenically characterized by the panel of monoclonal antibodies donated by PAHO-CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, USA Pan-American Health), revealing seven of these isolates belonged to variant 3, which has the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus as reservoir, as well as an insectivorous bat of the genus Myotis presenting variant 4, characterisitc of the other insectivorous bat Tadarida brasiliensis, and other three profiles are not compatible, NC-1, NC-2 and NC-3. All isolates were assayed by RT-PCR and their products had the nucleoprotein gene (N) viral partially sequenced, generating a phylogenetic tree that grouped these isolates into four clusters, designated as lineages Nyctinomops, Myotis, Desmodus rotundus, and a new lineage of rabies virus not... Currently, it is known that rabies virus has several cycles and several epidemiological animals may serve as reservoirs of the virus perpetuating it in wild and urban cycle. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of antirabies neutralizing antibodies (NA) in the serum of the opossum Didelphis albiventris e Didelphis aurita by means of a virus neutralizing (Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test - RFFIT). The survey was conducted in the cities of Anhembi, Torre de Pedra and Bofete, located in the center west of São Paulo. Sera from 67 animals were examined, most males in adulthood. The percentage of animals that presented neutralizing antibodies was 17.9%. This result shows the circulation of the rabies virus in skunks and serves to alert both the scientific community and government authorities involved in the research and rabies control
