Women and the Wiener Werkstätte: The Centrality of Women and the Applied Arts in Early Twentieth-Century Vienna

In this thesis I explore the importance of elite women in early twentieth-century Vienna in relation to the Wiener Werkstätte. My research has led me to believe that the Werkstätte held a more egalitarian view of women than other contemporary European applied arts workshops. Unfortunately the art-historical canon has generally overlooked the applied arts of the Wiener Werkstätte, as well as the significant roles of women in the Werkstätte as artists, clients, patrons, and promoters. In this thesis, I consider cases of women in these roles in early twentieth-century Vienna in order to gain a greater understanding of Viennese women's place economically and politically, as well as socially and culturally. In particular, I examine the Werkstätte's primary records of sales and production (called model books), housed in the Wiener Werkstätte archives at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, as a means to better understanding their participation. The evidence of the importance of women in relation to the Wiener Werkstätte, includes: 1) the creation of new opportunities for women in the arts; 2) the emergence and popularity of a liberating reformed fashion; 3) the focus of the Werkstätte on creating objects that would appeal to a female clientele; and 4) the Werkstätte's success, particularly among prominent wealthy female art patrons. I conclude that women's roles as artists, clients, patrons, and promoters can be seen as positions of empowerment for Viennese women of the early twentieth century.

Sexuality And Courtships Of 19th Century Vienna Vs 21st Century America Through The Roles Of Alfred And Sam In Romance, Romance

For my thesis, I plan to research the sexuality and the process of courtship, and the differences between 19th century Vienna and modern America, specifically as to how it relates to my characters in Romance, Romance. My interest in the topic springs directly from the script. What I mean is, my initial idea of sexuality of the 19th century is very Victorian and straight-laced, where as I think of modern day as very sexually liberated. However, in the script, the first act, set in Vienna, is much more sexually explicit and active. In fact, the second act is all building up to an affair that does not even occur. Working as these characters, I believe that a historical view of what sexuality was actually like outside of Victorian England will lead me to a much better understanding of my character, and his particular past and desires for both sexual partners and potential mates. I also believe this research will assist me in constructing the modern character of Sam who can all at once love his wife, desperately want an affair, and cower away from said affair when the opportunity finally arises. Another interesting impact this research will create for my work is the juxtaposition of these two time periods and their individual codes of etiquette for behavior in this play. While the play is divided into two separate one-acts, they are presented together as one collective work, so the combination of each piece clearly leads to comparisons and further understanding of the other play. I believe this research will not only enlighten me about these two eras but also enlighten my performance, and assist me in effectively carrying out this complex pair of roles with a richer character developed. It also will provide me with a better understanding of the juxtaposition of these two plays, why they are paired together in the way they have been, and how this juxtaposition is effective in this particular work of musical theatre.

Development and implementation of a tram line performance model / Utveckling och genomförande av en spårvägslinje prestanda modell

Wiener Linien’s tram network is one of the largest and busiest of its kind worldwide. Maintaining and improving the Level of Service (LoS) is one of the major tasks of the operations division. To direct these improvements efficiently to lines and sections of lines in need, tram line performance needs to be assessed. In this master thesis a Python-based model is developed to assess tram line performance using ideal operational constraints. Furthermore, the model is capable of computing the energy consumption for this optimal case. The tool computes Undisturbed Optimal Travel Times (UOTTs) which serve as a benchmark for tram line performance. Therefor it builds on track alignment data (curves and radii, gradients and switches), speed restriction data and a set of optimal parameters (no traffic, constant acceleration, etc.). Furthermore, train resistance, curve speeds and vehicle type are taken into consideration. These parameters are investigated and selected based on literature studies, interviews with employees of Wiener Linien, as well as field tests. Finally, the model results are compared to real world data for evaluation. A discussion of the results regarding further applications and improvements is performed. / Spårvagnsnätet i Wiener Linien är ett av de största och mest trafikerade i sitt slag i världen. Att underhålla och förbättra servicenivån är en av de viktigaste uppgifterna för driftsavdelningen. För att dessa förbättringar ska kunna riktas effektivt till de linjer som mest behöver det måste spårvagnarnas prestanda bedömas. I detta exjobb utvecklas en Python-baserad modell för att bedöma spårvagnslinjens prestanda med hjälp av ideala trafikparametrar. Dessutom kan modellen beräkna energiförbrukningen för dessa optimala scenarier.Verktyget beräknar Ostörda Optimala Restider (UOTTs) som blir referenser för spårvagnslinjernas prestanda. Metoden bygger på spårutformning (kurvor och radier, lutningar och växlar), hastighetsbegränsningar, och en uppsättning optimala parametrar (ingen vägtrafik, konstant acceleration osv.). Dessutom tas hänsyn till rullmotstånd, hastighet i kurvor och fordonstyp. Dessa parametrar undersöks och väljs ut genom litteraturstudier, intervjuer med anställda vid Wiener Linien samt fälttester.Modellresultaten jämförs med uppmätta restidsdata för utvärdering av den dagliga driften. En diskussion av ytterligare tillämpningar och förbättringar förs.

Design of Extreme Efficiency Active Rectifier for More-electric Aircrafts

The More-electric aircraft (MEA) concept has been raised since 1990s in order to increase fuel economy and reduce environmental impact of aircrafts. The fundamental of the concept is to replace pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical systems in conventional aircrafts with its electrical equivalent that is lighter and more reliable. In this movement, power electronics technology plays a key role in interfacing the new types of electrical loads to the new aircraft electrical power system. One of the major tasks for power electronics circuits in MEA is to transfer aircraft variable frequency AC voltage into DC voltage, which could be conveniently utilized by different types of loads or power buses. The converters carrying out the task is commonly known as "rectifiers". This work aims at designing and constructing rectifiers that can work efficiently and reliably in more-electric aircrafts. One of the major challenge for these rectifiers comes from the complex aircraft environment. The ambient temperature could be as high as 70 ºC. Moreover, active cooling for converters may not be desirable. To deal with this, rectifiers should achieve extreme efficiency (especially at full load) so that all the components are not overheated without active cooling. This work aims at achieving extreme converter efficiency through advanced converter topologies and design. Both single-phase and three-phase rectifiers are discussed in this work. For single-phase rectifiers, this work focused on boost-type power factor correction (PFC) converters due to the promising efficiency and good PFC characteristics. The well-known two-level semi-bridgeless PFC boost rectifier, together with its interleaved and three-level counterparts, are studied and compared in this work. The operation principles of the converters are analyzed. Models and methods for converter efficiency evaluation are discussed. The efficiency evaluation of the topologies shows the advantage of three-level topologies and interleaved topologies in achieving higher efficiency and better thermal management. For three-phase rectifiers, two-level boost rectifier, three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) rectifier and Vienna rectifier are investigated. The evaluation shows the advantage of Vienna rectifier in achieving high efficiency due to reduced switching loss. Based on the evaluation of single-phase and three-phase active rectifiers, the author selected interleaved Vienna rectifier to achieve extreme efficiency and avoid overheating problem. The operation principle of the interleaved Vienna rectifier is introduced, with particular attention paid to the circulating current generated by interleaving operation. The design procedure for achieving maximum efficiency is described. Finally, a prototype of the proposed converter is constructed, which achieves 99.26% efficiency at nominal load. / Master of Science

The changing nature of work and its competitive characteristics are global phenomena and are mainly fuelled by ongoing technological advancement. This creates unique challenges for talent attraction and the retention of high performing individuals. In addition, the global workforce is becoming more diverse due to demographic, societal and cultural changes and companies are placing greater demands on employee competency and performance. Managing the human factor as a strategic asset in organisations remains a primary challenge in securing a competitive advantage. The road construction industry in South Africa is no different. There is growing competition between civil engineering contractors to secure tenders and to maximise profitability. This is only possible with a sufficient and sustainable labour force. Valid selection processes are therefore required to ensure that the most productive individuals are selected for the most suitable jobs. Reliable and valid performance predictors will assist employers in making appropriate selection decisions. Selecting high performing individuals will support and enhance overall organisational performance. ix In this study the investigation focused on whether psychomotor ability and learning potential are statistically significant predictors of work performance - with specific reference to drivers and machine operators in a road construction company. A quantitative approach was followed to investigate the relationships between variables, or then the prediction of one dependent variable (driver and machine operator performance) by means of two independent variables (psychomotor ability and learning potential). Results from the study did not indicate any statistically significant relationships between the variables.
