O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar, através da análise de n-alcanos e de suas razões isotópicas, a influência da abertura do canal artificial do Valo Grande (VG) nas fontes de matéria orgânica (OM) do Sistema Estuarino-Lagunar de Cananéia-Iguape (CIELS). Os compostos foram analisados em quatro testemunhos, 22 sedimentos superficiais e em folhas de nove espécies de plantas dominantes na região de estudo. Os parâmetros avaliados nas folhas amostradas permitiram separar as espécies estudadas em monocotiledôneas e dicotiledôneas, e em vegetação lenhosa de mangue e de restinga. Esta separação foi útil na identificação das fontes de OM do CIELS. Os dados dos sedimentos superficiais mostraram que a principal fonte de OM no sistema é a vegetação de restinga. Esta se dá principalmente na região norte, onde está presente o VG. A influência fitoplanctônica, das macrófitas emersas e da vegetação de mangue é maior na região sul. Os dados dos testemunhos mostraram que a abertura do VG aumentou a contribuição da vegetação de restinga e das macrófitas aquáticas na OM presente ao longo do CIELS, diminuindo a influência fitoplanctônica e das macrófitas emersas. Assim, a qualidade e quantidade de OM do CIELS foram influenciadas pela presença do VG. / This study aimed to verify, through the use of n-alkanes and their isotopic composition, the influence of the Valo Grande artificial channel (VG) on organic matter (OM) sources of the Cananéia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon System (CIELS). The compounds were analyzed in four cores, 22 surface samples and nine dominants plants species leaves sampled on the studied area. The parameters evaluated on the leaves permitted to group the studied species in mono and dicotyledonous, and in mangrove and resting vegetation. This was useful to identify the OM sources on the CIELS. The surface sediment data showed that the CIELS OM is mainly composed by restinga vegetation. This occurs mainly on the northern region, where the VG is present. The influence of phytoplankton, of emergent macrophytes and of mangrove trees is higher on the southern region. The cores data showed that the VG opening increased the influences of Atlantic Forest and aquatic macrophytes on the CIELS OM, decreasing the emergent macrophytes and the phytoplankton influence. So, the type and the amount of OM on the CIELS are influenced by the VG presence.

Melatonin and thyroid hormones in the cold and in darkness:association with mood and cognition

Abstract The purpose of the study was to examine the cold-induced effects on pineal and thyroid hormones, as well as the associations of these hormones with psychological performance and to determine how psychological performance could be affected by demographic, anthropometric, physiological or biochemical measures during cold acclimatisation. The feasibility of urinary melatonin (MT), rather than 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), as an indicator of MT secretion was also examined. In the laboratory study, seasonal cold acclimatisation, its effects on hormones and their associations with mood and cognition were assessed in 15 young urban subjects exposed to cold in winter or summer in bright or dim light. In the field study, the associations of mood and cognition with demographic, anthropometric, physiological and biochemical measures were determined in healthy, euthyroid subjects (n = 133) in Antarctica in the beginning and at the end of summer and winter seasons. In both seasons, simple task performance was consistently impaired in the cold in experimental and field conditions. In complex tasks, negative, positive and mixed effects were observed. In the experimental study, serum MT and thyroid hormone levels were positively associated with mood. MT was negatively associated with simple task performance. Free triiodothyronine (T3) and thyrotropin (TSH) had mixed effects on simple task performance. TSH was positively associated with complex task performance. In the field study, higher age was associated with impaired cognition, especially in complex task performance. Total T3 was positively associated with mood and total thyroxine (T4) with complex task accuracy. Both urinary MT and aMT6s were good indicators of MT secretion, but the variation was smaller for MT. In conclusion, the associations of serum MT, TSH and thyroid hormone levels with mood and cognition found in experimental and field conditions are consistent with the psychological changes associated with the onset and consequent stages of the previously established polar T3 syndrome. In the field study, cognition and mood were associated with subject’s age and gender, which seemed to affect the physiological changes during acclimatisation to cold and darkness in Antarctica. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää kylmäaltistuksen aiheuttamia muutoksia käpy- ja kilpirauhasen hormonien tasoissa, hormonien yhteyttä psyykkiseen toimintakykyyn sekä demografisten, antropometristen, fysiologisten ja biokemiallisten tekijöiden yhteyttä psyykkiseen toimintakykyyn kylmäakklimatisaation aikana. Lisäksi verrattiin virtsan melatoniinin (MT) ja 6-sulfatoksimelatoniinin (aMT6s) soveltuvuutta MT-erityksen kuvaajina. Laboratoriotutkimuksessa selvitettiin talveen liittyvää kylmäsopeutumista, sen vaikutusta hormonitasoihin ja näiden yhteyttä mielialaan ja älylliseen toimintakykyyn 15 nuorella miehellä, jotka altistettiin kylmälle talvella ja kesällä sekä kirkkaassa että hämärässä valossa. Kenttäkokeessa Antarktiksella selvitettiin mielialan ja älyllisen toimintakyvyn sekä demografisten, antropometristen, fysiologisten ja biokemiallisten tekijöiden välistä yhteyttä terveillä henkilöillä (n =  133) kesä- ja talvikauden alussa ja lopussa. Suoriutuminen yksinkertaisista tehtävistä huononi kylmässä kesällä ja talvella sekä laboratorio- että kenttäoloissa. Kylmä vaikutti monimutkaisista tehtävistä suoriutumiseen vaihtelevasti. Laboratoriotutkimuksessa seerumin MT- ja kilpirauhashormonitasot korreloivat positiivisesti mielialan kanssa. MT korreloi negatiivisesti yksinkertaisista tehtävistä suoriutumisen kanssa. Vapaa trijodotyroniini (T3) ja tyrotropiini (TSH) korreloivat vaihtelevasti yksinkertaisista tehtävistä suoriutumisen kanssa. TSH korreloi positiivisesti monimutkaisista tehtävistä suoriutumisen kanssa. Kenttätutkimuksessa korkeampi ikä oli yhteydessä huonontuneeseeen älylliseen toimintakykyyn erityisesti monimutkaisissa tehtävissä. T3:n kokonaismäärä korreloi positiivisesti mielialan ja tyroksiinin (T4) kokonaismäärä monimutkaisista tehtävistä suoriutumisen kanssa. Sekä virtsan MT että aMT6s olivat hyviä MT-erityksen mittareita, mutta MT:ssa vaihtelu oli pienempää. Laboratorio- ja kenttäolosuhteissa havaitut MT:n, TSH:n ja kilpirauhashormonien yhteydet mielialaan ja älylliseen toimintakykyyn vahvistavat aiemmin havaittuja tuloksia polaarisen T3 -oireyhtymän synnystä ja oireyhtymän eri vaiheisiin liittyvistä psyykkisistä muutoksista. Kenttätutkimuksessa mieliala ja älyllinen toimintakyky olivat yhteydessä koehenkilön ikään ja sukupuoleen, jotka puolestaan voivat vaikuttaa fysiologisiin muutoksiin kylmään ilmastoon ja pimeyteen sopeutumisen aikana.

Opettajien osaamisen ja opetuksen kehittäminen perusopetukseen valmistavassa opetuksessa

Abstract The context of the research was a project carried out by preparatory education teachers following a three-phased TriPod-model in their school instruction. The three phases of instruction were: orientation in the classroom, field trip outside school and thirdly, reflection on the acquired experiences back at school. The instruction carried out according to the TriPod model was mainly based on principles of experiential and collaborative learning. Authentic learning environments outside of school were utilized systematically 8–9 times per academic year during the project which lasted three and half years. The main purpose of the research was to study the development of preparatory education teachers’ practical knowledge during the project. Secondly, the aim was to investigate the preparatory education teachers’ views about the suitability of the TriPod model in migrant students’ instruction and integration into their new home country. The epistemological starting point was social constructivism. The methodological approach of the study was qualitative showing features of action research, ethnography and phenomenography. The empirical data consisted mainly of thematic interviews with nine preparatory education teachers and the data was analysed by applying abductive qualitative content analysis. To conclude the results of the study, it can be maintained that the preparatory education teachers created their own “learning environment” where their practical knowledge was developed through individual and collaborative reflection. During the project, didactics for preparatory education was developed with a strong focus on authentic learning environments. Preparatory education teachers found the curriculum supportive in the implementation of the project’s principles and practices, which in turn contributed to the integration of theory and practice. The study also suggests that teachers in school, and the experts outside school in particular should adjust their speech to better suit the students’ level of Finnish language skills. The preparatory education teachers are fully aware of the significance of their role in advancing their students’ integration into society through the means of education. As a further result of the study, an updated model of teachers’ practical theory was constructed; it offers a well-grounded perspective on the educational challenges caused by societal changes which raise the need to re-consider both pre- and in service teacher education. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen konteksti on perusopetukseen valmistavan opetuksen projekti, jota opettajat toteuttivat kolmivaiheisen TriPod-mallin mukaisesti. Opetuksen kolme vaihetta olivat luokassa toteutettava orientaatio, opintovierailu koulun ulkopuolelle ja siinä saatujen kokemusten reflektointi koulussa. TriPod-mallin mukainen opetus perustui ensisijaisesti kokemuksellisen ja yhteisöllisen oppimisen periaatteille ja siinä hyödynnettiin systemaattisesti koulun ulkopuolisia autenttisia oppimisympäristöjä 8–9 kertaa lukuvuodessa kolmen ja puolen vuoden aikana. Tutkimukseni tavoitteena oli tutkia valmistavan opetuksen opettajien (valo-opettajien) osaamisen kehittymistä projektin aikana. Toisessa tutkimusongelmassa tutkittiin TriPod-mallin mukaisen opetuksen soveltuvuutta maahanmuuttajataustaisten valo-oppilaiden opetuksessa ja kotoutumisen edistämisessä. Tutkimukseni tietoteoreettisena lähtökohtana on sosiaalinen konstruktivismi. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena, jonka metodologinen viitekehys sisälsi piirteitä toimintatutkimuksesta sekä etnografisesta ja fenomenografisesta tutkimustraditiosta. Tutkimuksen aineisto hankittiin pääosin yhdeksältä valo-opettajalta teemahaastattelun avulla ja analysoitiin abduktiivisen laadullisen sisällönanalyysin avulla. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan todeta, että valo-opettajille muodostui oma ”oppimisympäristö”, jossa osaaminen kehittyi sekä subjektiivisen että yhteisöllisen reflektoinnin kautta. Projektin aikana kehitettiin valmistavan opetuksen didaktiikkaa, johon liittyi kiinteästi koulun ulkopuolisten oppimisympäristöjen hyödyntäminen. Valo-opettajat kokivat opetussuunnitelman tukevan projektissa toteutettuja periaatteita ja käytäntöjä, mikä puolestaan vahvisti käytännön ja teorian integroitumista. Tutkimuksessa nousi esille tarve sopeuttaa valo-opettajien ja erityisesti vierailukohteiden asiantuntijoiden opetuspuhetta vastaamaan valo-oppilaiden suomen kielen taitotasoa. Valo-opettajat tiedostivat työnsä yhteiskunnallisen merkityksen kotoutumista edistävien opetuskäytänteiden toteuttajina. Tutkimuksen tuloksena kehitettiin uusi sovellus opettajan käytännön teoriasta; se tarjoaa yhden perustellun näkökulman yhteiskunnallisten muutosten edellyttämiin opetuksellisiin haasteisiin, jotka tulisi ottaa huomioon opettajankoulutuksessa ja opettajien täydennyskoulutuksessa.
