A Wireless Sensor for Fault Detection and Diagnosis of Internal Combustion Engines

Hodgins, Sean 11 1900 (has links)
A number of non-invasive fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) techniques have been researched and have proven to have worked well in classifying faults in internal combustion engines (ICE) and other mechanical and electrical systems. These techniques are an integral step to creating more robust and accurate methods of determining where or how a fault has or will occur in such systems. These FDD techniques have the potential to not only save time avoiding a tear-down of a costly machine, but could potentially add another layer of safety in detecting and diagnosing a fault much earlier than was possible before. Looking at the previous research methods and the systems they used to acquire this data, it is a natural progression to try and make a system which is able to encapsulate all of these ideologies into one inexpensive module capable of integrating itself into the advanced set of FDD. This thesis follows along with the development of a new wireless sensor that is developed specifically for the use in FDD for ICE and other mechanical systems. A new set of software and firmware is created for the system to be able to be incorporated into previously designed algorithms. After creating and manufacturing the sensor it is put to the test by incorporating it into several Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and comparing the results to previous experiments done with previous research equipment. Using vibration data acquired from a running engine to train a neural network, the wireless sensor was able to perform equally as well as its expensive counter parts. It proved to have the ability to achieve 100% accuracy in classifying specific engine faults. The performance of three ANN training algorithms, Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and Smooth Variable Structure filter (SVSF), were tested and compared. Adding to the feasibility of a standalone system the wireless sensor was tested in a live environment as a method of instant ICE fault detection. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Conception Electromagnétique d'une gamme d'actionneurs Linéaires Tubulaires à Réluctance Variable

EL AMRAOUI, Lilia 18 December 2002 (has links) (PDF)

This thesis proposes the application of genetic algorithms for the synthesis of filters which modulate signals of variable structure sliding mode controllers. The modulation of the control signal reduces the amplitude of the output signal and thus can reduce power consumption and chattering. These filters are also applied to systems with parametric uncertainties and unmeasured state variables. In these systems, the uncertainties can impair the accurate estimation of the state by means of observers. For the synthesis of these filters, it is necessary to obtain the envelope which is the maximum norm of each impulse response admissible for the system. After this step, a filter is synthesized to be an upper bound for the envelope. In this study, three methods of search of the envelope by genetic algorithms were developed. One of these methods has been giving the best results and needs the least computational time.

Abstract: This work deals the investigation of control methods capable of rejecting perturbations, uncertainties and degenerative influence of input time-delay in the Three-phase Induction Motor (TIM) vector control problem, through a nonlinear mathematical model. The main focus is the use of the Proportional-Integral control method in conjunction with the Variable Structure Control with Sliding Mode, which has as main characteristic the rejection of perturbations and uncertainties. Analyzes are performed on the stability robustness and also on the influence that the uncertainties and input time-delay on the dynamic behavior of this system. In order to corroborate with the analyzes simulations are made using numerical examples of two-order linear system and applications in a non-linear mathematical model of a Three-phase Induction Motor. / Doutor

The evaluation of the robustness of this controller will be accomplished through simulations, where the control algorithm was subjected to adverse conditions, such as: disturbances, parametric variations and unmodeled dynamic. It was also made a comparison of this control strategy with another one, using classic controllers. In the simulations, it is used a coupled model of the synchronous generator which variables have a high degree of coupling, in other words, if there is a change in the input variables of the generator, it will change all outputs simultaneously. The simulation results show which control strategy performs better and is more robust to disturbances, parametric variations and unmodeled dynamics for the control of Synchronous Generator / A robustez e o desempenho do Controlador Adaptativo por Posicionamento de Polos e Estrutura Variavel s?o avaliados neste trabalho, onde este controlador e aplicado para o controle de um Gerador Sncrono conectado a um barramento infi- nito.

The reduction of harmonics and reactive contributes to the reduction of losses in transmission lines and electrical machinery, increasing the power factor, reduce the occurrence of overvoltage and overcurrent. The active power filter is the most efficient method for compensation of harmonic currents and voltages. The active power filter is necessary to use current and voltage controllers loop. Conventionally, the current and voltage control loop of active filter has been done by proportional controllers integrative. This work, investigated the use of a robust adaptive control technique on the shunt active power filter current and voltage control loop to increase robustness and improve the performance of active filter to compensate for harmonics. The proposed control scheme is based on a combination of techniques for adaptive control pole placement and variable structure. The advantages of the proposed method over conventional ones are: lower total harmonic distortion, more flexibility, adaptability and robustness to the system. Moreover, the proposed control scheme improves the performance and improves the transient of active filter. The validation of the proposed technique was verified initially by a simulation program implemented in C++ language and then experimental results were obtained using a prototype three-phase active filter of 1 kVA / Os m?todos para compensa??o de correntes e tens?es harm?nicas v?m sendo bastante utilizados, visto que esses m?todos permitem reduzir a n?veis aceit?veis as distor??es harm?nicas nas tens?es ou correntes em um sistema el?trico de pot?ncia, e ainda, compensar reativos.

No. of bitstreams: 1 FranciscoCSJ.pdf: 396492 bytes, checksum: c7b91bb21a15450749eb2738a17c2f3e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-07-28 / There are two main approaches for using in adaptive controllers. One is the so-called model reference adaptive control (MRAC), and the other is the so-called adaptive pole placement control (APPC). In MRAC, a reference model is chosen to generate the desired trajectory that the plant output has to follow, and it can require cancellation of the plant zeros. Due to its flexibility in choosing the controller design methodology (state feedback, compensator design, linear quadratic, etc.) and the adaptive law (least squares, gradient, etc.), the APPC is the most general type of adaptive control. Traditionally, it has been developed in an indirect approach and, as an advantage, it may be applied to non-minimum phase plants, because do not involve plant zero-pole cancellations. The integration to variable structure systems allows to aggregate fast transient and robustness to parametric uncertainties and disturbances, as well. In this work, a variable structure adaptive pole placement control (VS-APPC) is proposed. Therefore, new switching laws are proposed, instead of using the traditional integral adaptive laws. Additionally, simulation results for an unstable first order system and simulation and practical results for a three-phase induction motor are shown / Existem dois m?todos principais para a constru??o de controladores adaptativos.

Estimátor v systému regulace s proměnlivou strukturou / Estimator in control systems with variable structure

Dvořáček, Martin January 2008 (has links)
The thesis write about the linear discrete time incremental estimators. These are used for the choice of the best control system in systems with variable structure and further for direct control with status controller. There is an application of this on physical plane. In this paper PID variation controllers are discussed and optimized using Nelder-Mead Simplex Method. Feedback control with optimal PID is compared with control using linear discrete incremental estimators and status regulator.
