A Study of the Effects of ¡§Creative Picture Books Instruction¡¨ on the Creativity and Art Performance of the fourth graders.

This study uses a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design and aims to investigate the effects of "Creative Picture Books Instruction" on the creativity and art performance of the fourth graders. Subjects are students from two fourth grade classes in an elementary school in Kaohsiung City. One class represents the experimental group, while the other one is the control group. Each of the classes is given picture books instruction for twenty sessions of classes in four months. The experimental group receives creative picture books instruction based on ATDE (Asking, Teaching, Doing, Evaluation) teaching model developed by Dr. Lungan Chen. The control group receives general picture books instruction. This study incorporates quantitative and qualitative approaches. Two assessment tools are conducted, which include ¡§New Creativity Test for Use with Students in Taiwan¡¨ developed by Dr. Ching-Chi Wu, and the ¡§Rating Scale for the illustration of picture book¡¨ designed by the author. Quantitative data are analyzed by ANCOVA and MANCOVA. Qualitative data processed by content analysis are gathered from teacher's classroom anecdotes, interviews, student reflection logs, student feedback about the instruction, parents' feedback, and student works of picture books. The results of this study indicate that creative picture books instruction shows positive effects on the fourth grader¡¦s verbal creativity, figural creativity and drawing performance. Four findings are listed as follows: 1) Creative picture books instruction increases the fourth grader¡¦s verbal creativity in terms of fluency and flexibility as well as the figural creativity regarding flexibility and elaboration. 2) The fourth grader¡¦s drawing performance in graphics skills as well as the sense of style and personal creativity is improved after the creative picture books instruction. 3) The Creative picture books instruction helps the student to learn the various forms of visual art. Also, the uses of diverse creative thinking worksheets inspire the student¡¦s creativity and drawing performance, extend their understanding of the learning materials in depth and help in self-reflection and learning from others. 4) After the creative picture books instruction, students in the experimental group show positive acknowledgement and feedbacks to the whole instruction. Conclusions for practical application and suggestions for further research are discussed.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos do programa intitulado Mindful Creative Thinking (MCT) sobre o nível da criatividade verbal de estudantes universitários de uma escola de negócios. Evidências científicas apontam efeitos positivos das práticas de mindfulness e das forças de caráter cognitivas no desenvolvimento da criatividade verbal. O programa MCT, desenvolvido no presente estudo e de autoria do próprio pesquisador, combina práticas de mindfulness e práticas das forças de caráter, integradas com práticas de treinamento do pensamento criativo. As variáveis estudadas foram fluência (número de ideias), flexibilidade (número de categorias) e originalidade (novidade estatística das respostas). O estudo exploratório utilizou métodos quanti-qualitativos e abordagem analítica de ensaio controlado antes-e-depois (before and after study) com amostra randomizada. O programa MCT foi realizado com 51 graduandos da Faculdade de Administração, Economia e Contabilidade (FEA-RP/USP) de Ribeirão Preto. Os estudantes foram divididos em dois grupos: Experimental (26 participantes) e Controle (25 participantes). Os dados foram coletados por meio da aplicação do Teste de Torrance, Questionário das Cinco Facetas de Mindfulness e de questionário com questões abertas (Questionário MCT), elaborado pelo pesquisador. O resultado da pesquisa demonstrou que o programa Mindful Creative Thinking contribuiu para o desenvolvimento das habilidades criativas e influenciou positivamente no nível de atenção plena dos graduandos. / The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Mindful Creative Thinking (MCT) program on the level of verbal creativity of university students in a business school. Scientific evidence points to the positive effects of mindfulness practices and cognitive character forces in the development of verbal creativity. The MCT program, developed in the present study and authored by the researcher himself, combines practices of mindfulness and practices of character forces, integrated with practices of training of creative thinking. The variables studied were fluency (number of ideas), flexibility (number of categories) and originality (statistical novelty of the answers). The exploratory study used quantitative-qualitative methods and analytical approach of a randomized sample before and after study. The MCT program was carried out with 51 graduates from the Faculty of Administration, Economics and Accounting (FEA-RP / USP) of Ribeirão Preto. The students were divided into two groups: Experimental (26 participants) and Control (25 participants). The data were collected through the application of the Torrance Test, Questionnaire of Five Facets of Mindfulness and a questionnaire with open questions (Questionnaire MCT), prepared by the researcher. The result of the research demonstrated that the Mindful Creative Thinking program contributed to the development of creative skills and had a positive influence on the level of attention of undergraduates.

This study focuses on the evaluation of metacognitive monitoring via the solicitation of judgements, which can be used as a tool for the assessment of metacognition. From a cognitistic perspective, creativity is the term used to refer to a set of processes that enable variations in concepts, in order to facilitate the development of new ways of grouping ideas. The present study aimed to investigate metacognitive monitoring among university students when performing tasks that involve verbal creative processes. Participants included 82 university students, of both genders, who completed the Torrance’s Verbal Test of Creative Thinking. After finishing the creativity test, they were asked to evaluate their performance (metacognitive monitoring). The Results suggest that the participants appear to have poor metacognitive monitoring skills in tasks involving creativity, since the correlation between actual and estimated performance was weak. Future researches on this subject should address new hypotheses and work to eliminate possible methodological bias in the present study resulting from, for example, the homogeneity of the sample and limitations of the Creativity Monitoring Scale. / A metacognição é entendida como o conhecimento que o indivíduo possui sobre seus próprios processos cognitivos e que permite o monitoramento, a regulação e avaliação de suas atividades cognitivas. Em pesquisas sobre o monitoramento metacognitivo, foco também do presente estudo, este processo é avaliado com frequência por meio de julgamentos, que constituem uma ferramenta de avaliação da metacognição. Sob o ponto de vista cognitivo, a criatividade, por sua vez, é o nome dado a um grupo de processos que possibilita variações em conceitos, de forma a facilitar a elaboração de novas e inéditas formas de agrupamento. O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar o monitoramento metacognitivo de universitários em tarefas que envolvem processos criativos verbais. Participaram da pesquisa 82 estudantes universitários, de ambos os gêneros, sendo a eles apresentado o Teste de Pensamento Criativo de Torrance - Versão Verbal. Após a aplicação do teste de criatividade, eles foram solicitados a emitir estimativas sobre o seu desempenho, que correspondem ao monitoramento metacognitivo. Os resultados sugerem que os participantes parecem possuir poucas habilidades de monitoramento metacognitivo nas tarefas que envolveram a criatividade, visto que as correlações entre os desempenhos reais e estimados tenderam a ser fracas. É necessário que as investigações acerca da temática continuem, no sentido de levantar novas hipóteses e de eliminar possíveis viéses metodológicos encontrados no decorrer da aplicação do procedimento proposto, como, por exemplo, a homogeneidade da amostra e a aplicabilidade da Escala de Monitoramento da Criatividade.

In Brazil, few studies are found investigating the relationship between creativity and personality constructs, especially considering the Big Five Model. This study investigated a sample of 83 Brazilian high school students, between ages 14 and 18 years (M = 16.01, SD = 0.95) that answered two questionnaires, the Torrance Thinking Creatively with Words (Brazilian version) and the Bateria Fatorial de Personalidade (Factorial Battery of Personality). The results indicated significant correlations only between the socialization factor and twoverbal creative indexes (ICVI = .26; ICVII = .26). In the present study the investigated constructs are weakly related. The influence of the instrument and the theoretical modeladopted in the findings is discussed. / En Brasil es escasa la literatura científica acerca de la relación entre los constructos de creatividad, personalidad y el Modelo de los Cinco Factores. A partir de la aplicación del Test de Pensamiento Creativo con Palabras de Torrance (versión brasilera) y la Batería Factorial de Personalidad en 83 estudiantes brasileros de secundaria, con rango de edad de entre 14-18 años (M = 16; DS = .95), se estudia la relación entre la creatividad verbal y la personalidad. Los resultados revelan la existencia de relaciones significativas bajas entre el factor socialización y dos índices creativos verbales (ICV I = .26; ICVII = .26). Se discute la influencia del instrumento y del modelo teórico asumido en los hallazgos. / No Brasil, a escassez de estudos que investigam a relação entre os construtos da Criatividade e Personalidade, principalmente considerando-se o modelo Big Five, pode ser notada. Neste cenário, a partir da aplicação dos testes Pensando Criativamente com Palavras de Torrance (versão brasileira) e a Bateria Fatorial da Personalidade, o presente trabalho pesquisou em uma amostra de 83 estudantes brasileiros do Ensino Médio, com idades entre 14 e 18 anos (M = 16.01, DP = .95) a relação entre os construtos referidos anteriormente. Os resultados indicaram a existência de correlações significativas apenas entre o fator Socialização e os dois índices criativos verbais (ICVI = .26; ICVII = .26), de modo a apontar que, nesta pesquisa, os construtos apresentamse pouco relacionados. Discutese a influência dos instrumentos edo modelo teórico adotado.
