Assessing Visitors' Satisfaction at Parks Canada Sites

Banyai, Maria January 2012 (has links)
This study addresses the measurement of satisfaction. In doing so, it proposes a hypothetical conceptual framework for examining visitors’ satisfaction with their experiences in nature-based settings. Visitors’ overall satisfaction with their experiences was examined in terms of its relationships to visitors’ satisfaction with various site attributes, to visitors’ perceived importance of interpretive programs to learning, and how it is affected by visitors’ age, gender (male or female) and visitation pattern. The responses of 1309 Visitor Information Program (VIP) surveys returned by visitors to two national sites in Nova Scotia (Port Royal National Historic Site and Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site) provided the data for this study’s investigation. Secondary data analyses revealed that visitors’ satisfaction with the site attributes has the strongest effect on their overall satisfaction with their experiences. While visitors’ perceived importance to learning was also found to be positively correlated to overall experience satisfaction, when other variable are taken into consideration, its effect on overall satisfaction was found not to be statistically significant. Amongst these variables, gender was found to explain a significant amount of variance in visitors’ overall satisfaction with experiences in nature-based settings. Moreover, visitors of different age groups differ significantly in their perceptions of importance of interpretation to learning, and in their satisfaction levels. Although the findings show high levels of satisfaction at both sites, these are taken with caution. A discussion of the issues related to the measurement of satisfaction is provided, along with recommendations for a more discriminant, valid and reliable satisfaction measurement instrument.

A partnership of peoples : understanding collaboration at the Museum of Anthropology

Schultz, Elaine Ruth 11 1900 (has links)
The goals of museum collaboration are several, as are its intended beneficiaries. Assuming the success of the practice, local communities can gain the opportunity for self-representation and self-determination, museums can contribute to the creation and dissemination of new kinds of knowledge, and visitors can take home better understandings of cultural difference. While these are the ideals of collaboration, they frequently go unrealized, in large part because, as research indicates, the visiting public fails to recognize the active involvement of communities at museums. This raises the question as to whether, in the absence of this audience awareness, museum collaboration can fully contribute to the realization of the tolerant society that it purports to support. The purpose of this research is to examine the role of museum visitors in achieving the goals of museum collaboration, as well as to consider why this public has difficulty recognizing community involvement at museums and how this may be remedied. “A Partnership of Peoples” is an extensive renewal project underway at the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at the University of British Columbia (UBC), designed to facilitate collaborative research at the museum. It also serves as a case study for my consideration of the relationship between museums and the visiting public as a part of the collaborative process. By speaking with both MOA staff and visitors, I gained insight into the intended goals of the renewal project with respect to the museum’s relationship with communities and the general public, as well as visitor understandings of collaboration. With this fieldwork, in addition to a literature review, I found that the significance of collaboration rests in the personal interactions that occur between individuals. As the majority of visitors do not benefit from these interactions during their time at the museum, they are at a disadvantage when it comes to recognizing the engagement of others in the creation of displays or the facilitation of research. The task for museums, then, is to make contemporary peoples visible and audible, connecting objects to communities and increasing opportunities for visitors to experience these personal meanings.

Motivational factors and the experience of learning in educational leisure settings

Packer, Jan Merle January 2004 (has links)
Motivation is an important aspect of learning in educational leisure settings because it affects the choices visitors make regarding what to attend to, the amount of effort they devote to learning, and the extent to which they enjoy the experience. Commonly, however, visitors seek entertainment, social or restorative experiences as well as, or in preference to, a learning experience. This research investigates the impact of motivational factors on the experience of learning in educational leisure settings. Motivational factors are considered in terms of four components - personal goals, capability beliefs, context beliefs and situational incentives. The experience of learning is considered in terms of visitors’ perceptions of the experience, rather than objective measures of learning outcomes, as the experience itself is seen as the desired outcome of the visit. Visitors to six different educational leisure settings in South East Queensland were invited to participate in the research, including a museum, an art gallery, a wildlife centre, an aquarium, and guided tours of natural and cultural heritage sites. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using questionnaires (499 participants) and interviews (52 participants) in order to ascertain the importance to visitors of different types of learning experiences; identify the extent to which motivations for learning vary across sites and visitor groups; investigate the relationships between the educational, entertainment, social and restorative aspects of the visitors’ experience; and examine the impact of motivational factors on visitors’ experience of learning in leisure settings. The findings support the importance of learning to visitors in a range of educational leisure settings. Visitors seek an experience that combines elements of learning and discovery, and is perceived to be both effortless and fun. It is concluded that the characteristics of learning in educational leisure settings contribute to a synergy between the educational and entertainment aspects of the experience. Situational factors are more important than personal factors in motivating visitors to engage in and experience this type of learning. This is of great significance to educational leisure settings as it implies that sites have a reasonable degree of control over the motivational factors that influence visitor engagement in learning.

Urban Foyer

Moodley, Lisha 09 December 2013 (has links)
The introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit and the Gautrain Rail and Bus facilities to the corner of Wolmarans and Rissik Street in Johannesburg's inner city has altered the site on which the Brazilian Modernist inspired South African Railway War Memorial Hall is situated. The new public transport facilities have bought in new users, increasing the foot traffic on the site. However, the additional facilities on the site remain unchanged and does not accommodate and provide the necessary facilities for its current users. The South African Railway War Memorial Hall sits isolated from the site and the larger context of Johannesburg's inner city, and fails to communicate the energy and unique flavour, that is seen at many urban spaces within the culturally rich Johannesburg inner city. Interior architecture involves the alteration and adaptive reuse of existing structures. The thesis proposes the alteration of the South African Railway War Memorial Hall into a visitor centre for the Johannesburg Tourism Company. An intensive analysis was conducted in order to establish the historical, structural and environment contributors to the design. Visitor centres, relevant precedents, along with the theory of place-making were investigated to establish an effective design approach that will address the identified problem. This resulted in the design of the Urban Foyer. The intervention will provide the necessary facilities required by the current and proposed users. It will also promote and advertise local events, unique urban spaces frequented by locals and popular landmarks. It is hoped that such an intervention will facilitate the integration of the site with its immediate and larger context. It is also hoped that through this integration current and new users will be encouraged to explore Johannesburg's inner city. / Dissertation MInt(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2014 / Architecture / MInt(Prof) / Unrestricted

Your tourism kills my neighborhood. : När gränsen för social hållbarhet är nådd. En fallstudie i Hållbar Turismutveckling, Barcelona 2017.

Halleröd, Åsa January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this article is to study in what way the politicians manage the work of Sustainable Tourism Development in Barcelona. The questions at issue is to define the main problems in the city caused by tourists and in what way the city is working to find sustainable and long-term solutions. The method used is a qualitative analysis of important Management documents for tourism of Barcelona City Council, especially Barcelona Strategic Tourism Plan, diagnosis, 2017-2020. The results shows that the biggest problems caused by tourism is overcrowding in Ciutat Vella as well as noise and social fragmentation caused by private rented homes, and loss of public space for the citizens in the same area. The city is working together with the citizens of Barcelona, direct and indirect stakeholders to find sustainable solutions, compiling the Barcelona Strategic Tourism Plan 2020. Apart of finding solutions for the tourist situation, one of the main goals with the plan is to improve the social conditions for the citizens of Barcelona. One of the solutions against overcrowding is to widen the brand of and the destination of Barcelona to find new, responsable segments. The other is mainly about all kind of Visitors-Management in order to manage visitors from overcrowded areas to less crowded areas. To solve the renting problems, new restrictions and supervision is made.

A comparative case study of the Maropeng Visitor Centre and the Origins Centre from the perspective of new media interactivity

Leujes, Ingrid Hendrika 06 May 2013 (has links)
Postmodern museums challenge many of the more traditional concepts regarding what constitutes a museum. Concepts such as museums being places of contemplation or places that exhibit collected artefacts are no longer considered to be the primary attributes of museums. The idea of the museum as a collection of knowledge is beginning to take ground even though more traditional ideas are not necessarily rejected. As the focus has shifted towards the experience of the visitor in terms of education and entertainment, the display of artefacts supported by text is no longer considered to be essential to providing a meaningful experience for the visitor. Photography and film are now widely used to communicate information or ideas in museums. Less widely used, particularly in South Africa, are new media such as computer games and virtual reality. New media, because of its ability to engage people through its interactive nature provides a valuable communication tool for the museum environment. A comparison between two South African sites, The Maropeng Visitor Centre and The Origins Centre, reveals the value of new media for museums and the value of museums for education in the society at large. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Visual Arts / unrestricted
