Efeito de diferentes intensidades do treinamento de força nos ganhos de força máxima e hipertrofia muscular / Effect of different intensities of strength training on maximum strength and muscle hypertrophy

Lasevicius, Thiago 19 February 2016 (has links)
Por outro lado, intensidades altas de treinamento produzem os maiores ganhos de força máxima em membros superiores e inferiores / The present study investigated the effect of different resistance training (RT) intensities, with equal total training volume (TTV), on maximal dynamic strength (1RM) and upper and lower limbs muscle cross sectional area (CSA). Thirty men engaged in a twice a week training period for 12 weeks. The study was carried out with a within subject design. Thus, one leg and one arm were set at 20% 1RM (G20) for all subjects and the contralateral side was randomly assigned to one of three possible groups (i.e. G40, G60 and G80, 40%, 60% and 80% 1RM, respectively). The leg and arm that were set at 20% 1RM always started the resistance training session and performed 3 sets to concentric muscle failure. TTV (sets x repetition x mass) was recorded and replicated to other groups. The maximal dynamic strength and elbow flexors and vastus lateralis CSA were assessed at pre, 6 weeks and post intervention. The main results showed similar increases in CSA for G40, G60 and G80 groups (25%, 25,1% and 25%, elbow flexors and 20,5%, 20,4% and 19,5% vastus lateralis, respectively, p<0,05). Only the G80 group showed significant difference from G20 group after 12 weeks of resistance training (25% and 14,4%, respectively for elbow flexors and 19,5% and 7,9%, respectively for vastus lateralis, p<0,05). Regarding 1RM the G80 group showed the greatest increase post 12 weeks of resistance training for elbow flexion (54.2% p<0,05) and for leg press 45º the groups G60 and G80 showed the greatest increases (55.4% e 45.7%, respectively, p<0,05). In summary, when different RT intensities (40, 60 and 80% 1RM) performed the same TTV gains of CSA for elbow flexors and vastus lateralis muscles are similar between them and intensities of 20% 1RM did not result a significant increase in CSA. For muscle strength the highest intensities (60% and 80% 1RM) seemed to be superior to promote strength gains than other intensities. These findings indicate that intensities between 40-80% 1RM with equal TTV can elicit significant increase in muscle hypertrophy in upper and lower limbs; however, high intensities are superior to augment strength adaptations in upper and lower limbs

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Basilisk (Brachiaria decumbens) in a Red-Yellow distrofic Latosol. The experiment was carried out at Rio Manso Experimental Unit of the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri - UFVJM in the city of Couto de Magalh?es de Minas, located 18 ? 4 '25 "south and 43 ? 28' 16" West, at 756 meters in altitude, being the climate of the region considered humid subtropical, Cwa, according to the K?ppen`s classification. For the evaluation of the plant, there had been used the split-plot in randomized complete block design (RBD), with four replications. The plots were distributed with nitrogen in different rates (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 kg/N/ha) and in subplots the four cuts made in plants. For soil analysis, there have been used the split split plot, with the nitrogen levels (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha/cut) in the plots, the two depths (0-3, 10 - 13 cm) in the subplots and three sampling times (before, during and after the experiment) in split split plots in randomized block design with four replications. The variables were analyzed in plants of dry matter yield (DMP), height, chlorophyll content (FCI), content of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and the soil, pre-consolidation pressure (?p), initial soil density (ISD), total pore volume (TPV), empty index (EI) and organic matter (OM). It is concluded that the nitrogen application increases linearly productivity of dry matter, plant height and protein content of the Brachiaria decumbens, which correlate with the rate of chlorophyll. After two growing seasons, an increase in pre-consolidation pressure of the soil and the brachiaria is capable of withstanding higher applied loads. The total pore volume has decreased, the initial soil density increased, but not in relation to the levels of soil compaction. The content of soil organic matter decreases, which can be attributed to the lack of litter along the evaluations, due to the removal of portions of the cut material.

The effect of different resistance exercise intensities with similar total volume upon delayed on set muscle soreness, muscle damage markers and hormonal profile.

Uchida, Marco Carlos 23 June 2008 (has links)
This study compared four different intensities with similar total volume of a bench press exercise for muscle soreness, creatine kinase (CK) activity, interleukin (IL)-1<font face=\"symbol\">b, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-<font face=\"symbol\">a (TNF-<font face=\"symbol\">a), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and hormonal concentrations in the blood. Brazilian Army male soldiers were placed into five groups: 50%-1RM, 75%-1RM, 90%-1RM, and 110%-1RM, and control that did not perform the exercise. Muscle soreness and plasma CK activity increased significantly (p<0.05) after exercise. Serum PGE2 concentration also increased significantly (p<0.05) after exercise. After one hour post exercise cortisol increased in 75%-1RM group, with this response also exceeding the other intensities (p<0.05). These results suggest that the intensity of bench press exercise does not affect the magnitude of muscle soreness and blood markers of muscle damage, inflammation and largely similar hormonal responses, which may be attributed to the equalization of total volume, exception made for the 75%-1RM group for serum cortisol concentration.

Conclusion CP and DS systems do not promote greater gains in strength muscle hypertrophy and changes in muscle architecture compared to traditional resistance training. / The concurrent training (i.e., combination of endurance with strength training) may result in negative interference on strength performance. Moreover, there are indications that the magnitude of this interference is dependent on endurance exercise mode. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare maximal strength gains and acute volume performed during strength training (ST) and concurrent training (CT) consisting of high-intensity intermittent training plus strength training over the course of a 12-week intervention. METHODS: Nineteen recreationally active males were divided in CT (n=11) and ST (n=8) groups. The CT group performed repeated 1 min efforts at 100% of maximal aerobic velocity interspersed by 1 min of passive recovery until accumulating a total running distance of 5km followed by a strength session (consisting of three sets of eight exercises with loads of 8-12 repetition maximum) twice weekly for a period of 12 weeks, while the ST group performed only strength training sessions. Maximal strength and training volume during an acute exercise session were evaluated at baseline and after eight and 12 weeks of training. A two-way analysis of variance (group and training period) with repeated measures in the second factor was conducted to compare maximal strength values. A three-way analysis of variance (group, training period and set) was conducted to compare the volume performed in the acute exercise sessions. RESULTS: A small interference effect was observed in maximal strength relative to body mass after 12 weeks of training with greater improvements in the ST group compared to the CT group, that were not observed after 8 weeks. The volume performed during the acute exercise session was lower in CT than ST after 8 and 12 weeks of training. In summary, executing high-intensity intermittent exercise before strength training impaired the total volume performed after 8 and 12 weeks compared with strength training alone but the impairment of maximal strength occurred only after 12 weeks. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the impairment of volume performed did not have an impact on strength gains until after 8 weeks of concurrent training with high-intensity intermittent exercise.

Quantifying structural changes in the ageing brain from magnetic resonance imaging

Royle, Natalie Anne January 2015 (has links)
Understanding the ageing process is of increasing importance to an ageing society and one aspect of this is investigating what role the brain has in this process. Cognitive ability declines as we age and it is one of the most distressing aspects of getting older. Brain tissue deterioration is a significant contributor to lower cognitive ability in late life but the underlying biological mechanisms in the brain are not yet fully understood. One reason for this is the difficulty in obtaining accurate measures of potential ageing-related brain biomarkers. The chapters in this thesis explore the difficulties of quantifying brain changes in the ageing brain from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and how the changes identified are related to cognition in later life. The data was acquired as part of the second wave of the longitudinal Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 study in which 866 people aged 73 years, returned for cognitive and medical assessment. At this stage of the study 702 underwent MR imaging resulting in 627 complete datasets across all testing. The entire data, a randomly chosen subset of 150 and 416 freely available data were used to investigate global and regional measurement methods in older brains and how the resultant measurements related to cognitive performance. Furthermore the presence of early life cognitive data in the form of a general intelligence test sat at age 11, served as an indicator of cognitive ability prior to the potential influence of the ageing process. The chapters concerning global measures at first establish, that a measure of intracranial volume (ICV) serves as both a way of correcting for individual differences in brain size between participants and as a proxy premorbid measure of brain size. The analysis, utilising freely available cross-sectional MRI data (http://www.oasis-brains.org) revealed that ICV differed very little between 18-28 year olds and 84-96 year olds where as total brain tissue volume (TBV) differed by 14.1% between the two groups, which was more than twice the standard deviation across the entire age range (18-96 years). Second a validated, reliable method for measuring ICV was investigated using 150 people randomly chosen from the LBC1936 study. Automated and semi-automated methods were validated against reference measurements the results of which showed that common ageing features make automated and semi-automated methods that do not have an additional manual editing step, ineffective at producing accurate ICV measurements. This analysis also highlighted the need to employ additional spatial overlap assessment to volumetric comparison of measurement methods to reduce the effect of false-positives and false-negatives skewing apparent discrepancies between methods. Using the information gained here ICV and TBV from the entire LBC1936 cohort were analysed in a structural equation model, alongside cognitive ability measures at both age 11 and age 73. We found that TBV was a stronger predictor of later life cognitive ability, after accounting for early life ability, but that a modest association remained between ICV and late life cognition. This suggests that early life factors pay a role in how well we age, though the relationship is complex. The regional measures chapters look at two brain regions commonly associated with ageing, the hippocampus and the frontal lobes. Measuring either of these brain regions in large samples of healthy older adults is challenging for many reasons. The hippocampus is small and as with all brain regions shows greater variation in older age, this makes employing automated methods that have the advantage of being fast and reproducible difficult. Following the results of our systematic review of automated methods for measuring the hippocampus, the two most commonly used and available automated methods were validated against reference standard measurements. The results indicated that although automated methods present an attractive alternative to laborious manual measurements they still require manual editing to produce accurate measurements in older adults. The modified strategy employed across the LBC1936 was to use an automated method and then manually edit the output; these segmentations were used to investigate the potential of multimodal image analysis in clarifying associations between the hippocampus and cognitive ability in old age. The analysis focused on associations between longitudinal relaxation time (T1), magnetization transfer ratio (MTR), fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) in the hippocampus and general factors of fluid intelligence, cognitive processing speed and memory. The findings show that multi-modal MRI assessments were more sensitive than volumetric measurements at detecting associations with cognitive measures. The difficulty with producing a relevant frontal lobe measure was made apparent when the result of a large systematic review looking at the manual protocols used revealed 19 methods and 15 different landmarks had been employed. This resulted in an analysis that took the 5 most common boundaries reported and applied them to 10 randomly selected participants from the LBC1936. The results showed significant differences between the resultant volumes, with the smallest measurement when using the genu as the posterior marker representing only 35% of the measurement acquired using the central sulcus. The results from the studies presented in this thesis strongly highlight the need to develop age specific methods when using brain MRI to study ageing. Furthermore the implications of using unstandardised protocols, making assumptions about a methods performance based on validation in younger samples and the need to account for early life factors in this area of research have been made clearer. Studies building on these findings will be beneficial in elucidating the role of the brain in ageing.

The effect of different resistance exercise intensities with similar total volume upon delayed on set muscle soreness, muscle damage markers and hormonal profile.

Marco Carlos Uchida 23 June 2008 (has links)

[pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO DE UM SISTEMA DE MEDIÇÃO DE VARIAÇÃO DE VOLUME TOTAL DE AMOSTRAS TRIAXIAIS NÃOSATURADAS E AVALIAÇÃO DO EFEITO DE PROCESSOS DE SATURAÇÃO NO COMPORTAMENTO DE SOLOS SAPROLÍTICOS / [en] DEVELOPMENT OF A TOTAL VOLUME CHANGE MEASURING SYSTEM FOR UNSATURATED TRIAXIAL SAMPLES AND EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF SATURATION PROCEDURES ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF SAPROLITIC SOILS

[en] This research presents a study on the influence of saturation procedures, used in commercial and research laboratories, on the stress-strain-strength behavior of residual soils when subjected to CIU triaxial tests. The selected soils are derived from different lithologies and show differences in mineralogical composition, structure and weathering degree. One of them belongs to the weathering profile of an alkaline rock located at the city of Tanguá-RJ. The others are the result of weathering processes on melanocratic and leucocratic features of a migmatite from Duque de Caxias, in Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area. Variation of the total volume of the test specimens was monitored during the saturation process in some tests to assess the influence of this procedure on the soil structure. For this purpose, it was developed a double-walled triaxial cell with a system based on the measurement of variation of the volume of the fluid filling the inner cell. The equipment has competitive technical features, besides the low cost and easy to assemble. The saturation technique based on percolating water by suction with a low cell pressure followed by continuous and simultaneous increase of backpressure (automatic saturation) was the most suitable method for the residual soil from the alkaline rock, which presents a weakly cemented structure, without bonding, and high voids ratio. However, the residual soil from the migmatite rock (melanocratic feature), which has strong cementation and high yielding stress, shown to be less susceptible to the saturation procedures, having its behavior affected only by the saturation technique of elevation of backpressure in just onestage.

Godoi, Natasha Mirella Inhã. January 2020 (has links)
