The Effect of Whole Body Vibration on Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage and Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness

Current scientific evidence suggests that when whole body vibration (WBV) is used as a warm-up prior to performing eccentric exercise, delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is mitigated and strength loss recovers faster. These benefits were observed primarily in nonresistance-trained individuals. The aim of this study was to determine if WBV could mitigate soreness and expedite strength recovery for resistance-trained individuals when used as a warm-up prior to eccentric exercise. Thirty resistance-trained males completed 300 maximal eccentric contractions of the quadriceps after warming up with (WBV) or without (CON) WBV. Both CON and WBV experienced significant isometric (27.8% and 30.5%, respectively) and dynamic (52.2% and 47.1%, respectively) strength loss immediately postexercise. Isometric strength was significantly depressed after 24 hours in the CON group (9.36% p < 0.01), but not in the WBV group (5.8% p = 0.1). Isometric strength was significantly depressed after 48 hours in the CON group (7.18% p < 0.05), but not in the WBV group (4.02% p = 0.25). Dynamic strength was significantly decreased in both the CON and WBV groups both at 24 hours (19.1% p < 0.001, and 16.1% p < 0.001, respectively), 48 hours (18.5% p < 0.01, and 14.5% p < 0.03), and 1 week postexercise (9.3% p = 0.03, and 3.5%, respectively). Pain as measured by visual analog scale (VAS) was significant in both CON and WBV groups at 24 and 48 hours postexercise, but the WBV experienced significantly less soreness than the CON group after 24 hours (28 mm vs. 46 mm p < 0.01 respectively), and 48 hours (38 mm vs. 50 mm p < 0.01). Pain as measured by pain pressure threshold (PPT) increased significantly in both groups after 24 and 48 hours, but there was no difference in severity of perceived soreness. The use of WBV as a warm-up may mitigate DOMS but does not appear to expedite the recovery of strength in the days following eccentric exercise in resistance-trained individuals.

The effects of polyphenol supplementation on muscular strength, power, and soreness following eccentric exercise

An acute bout of unaccustomed eccentric exercise causes prolonged strength loss and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) for several days. Chronic dietary supplementation with polyphenols, from pomegranates, has been shown to accelerate recovery following eccentric exercise, but the optimal dose is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dietary supplementation with different doses of pomegranate juice concentrate (PJC) on muscular strength, power, and soreness throughout a 96-hour time period following an acute bout of eccentric exercise. Healthy recreationally active males (n=45) were assigned to one of three treatment groups: Once-daily PJC (1x), twice-daily PJC (2x), or placebo (PLA) supplementation over a period of eight days. A 1x dose of PJC provided approximately 650 mg GAE. On day four of each treatment, subjects performed downhill running intervals (-10% grade) over a 40-minute period followed by 40 repetitions of eccentric elbow flexion at 100% of concentric 1-RM. Muscle soreness of arms and legs, maximal isometric strength of the elbow flexors (EF) and knee extensors (KE), vertical jump height (VJ[subscript height]) maximal cycling power (P[subscript max]), and 10-meter sprint velocity (V[subscript 10m]) were assessed pre-exercise and 2, 24, 48, 72, 96 hours post-exercise. Additionally, maximal instantaneous power (IP[subscript max]), maximal velocity (V[subscript max]), maximal torque (T[subscript max]), and torque at 0° (T0) were assessed on the inertial load power cycle pre-exercise and 24, 48, 72, 96 hours post-exercise. Throughout the 96-hours post-exercise, isometric EF strength was significantly higher in 1x and 2x groups as compared to PLA (main treatment effect, 83.6 ± 2.7% vs. 85.6 ± 1.9% vs. 78.4 ± 1.8%, respectively; p < 0.001). Isometric KE strength was significantly higher in 1x and 2x groups as compared to PLA (main treatment effect, 93.9 ± 1.5% vs. 91.6 ± 1.5% vs. 87.1 ± 1.8%, respectively; p < 0.001). Both VJ and V10m were significantly higher in 1x compared to PLA (main treatment effect, 99.9 ± 0.9% vs. 98.0 ± 1.0%, respectively, p = 0.037; 100.0 ± 0.8% vs. 97.8 ± 0.7%, respectively, p = 0.003). Muscle soreness and Pmax, were similar at all time points between groups. We conclude that dietary supplementation with 1x or 2x PJC results in higher isometric strength values compared to placebo for EF and KE muscles during the 96-hour period after an acute bout of eccentric exercise. / text

The thesis introduces gathered Indian castes that are known as Doms. The Dom castes are considered to be the groups in where Roma originated. The thesis is a case study of particular localities of the North-Indian region Kumaon (Uttarakhand province). The thesis focuses on the daily life of local Dom groups, their position in the caste system, and also targets the professions they are performing. It further targets the practices performed during choosing the partner and also focuses on their religious ideas about the world around them. Finally it itroduces the parallels, that can be found between Doms and Roma.

The Effects of Dha Supplementation on Markers of Inflammation and Muscle Damage Following an Acute Eccentric Exercise Bout

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on muscle damage and inflammation following an acute eccentric exercise bout. Methods: A double-blind placebo-controlled, study was performed using 41 healthy, untrained males aged 18-28 y who consumed either 2 g/d DHA or placebo (PL, corn oil) for 32 days. Supplements were consumed for 28 days prior to exercise. Participants completed an eccentric exercise procedure of the elbow flexors at 140% of 1-RM (6 sets x 10 repetitions). The time under tension (TUT) for each set of eccentric contractions was recorded manually from the investigators voice commands. Fasted blood samples for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1-ra), C-reactive protein and creatine kinase (CK) were assessed on days 1, 2 and 4. Fasted serum DHA was measured at baseline (day -28) and on day 1. Peak isometric strength of the elbow flexors, delayed-onset muscle soreness, and range of motion were measured on day 1 prior to exercise and days 2, 3, and 4 following exercise. Results: DHA significantly reduced natural log of CK (p<0.05) response over 4 d. Additionally, IL-6 area under the curve (AUC) was reduced for DHA compared to PL (3.6 ± 2.5 pg/mL vs. 5.3 ± 2.7 pg/mL) (p<0.05). TUT/set was higher in the DHA group compared to placebo (p<0.05). There were no other significant differences between treatments. Conclusion: DHA supplementation produced lower indicators of muscle damage (CK) and inflammation (IL-6 AUC). Whole Body Periodic Acceleration Reduces Levels of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After Eccentric Exercise

Context: Several recovery strategies have been used, with limited effectiveness, to reduce the muscle discomfort or pain and the diminished muscle performance following a bout of unaccustomed physical activity, a condition known as delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS). Muscle damage in this condition is associated with mechanical disruption of the muscle and connective tissue and inflammation and increased oxidative stress. Low frequency, low intensity, whole body periodic acceleration (WBPA) that increases nitric oxide (NO) release from vascular endothelium into the circulation through increased pulsatile shear stress offers a potential solution. This is because endothelial derived nitric oxide has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-nociceptive properties. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of WBPA on the pain and diminished muscle performance associated with DOMS induced by unaccustomed eccentric arm exercise in young male subjects. Design: Longitudinal. Setting: University Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Participants: Seventeen active men, 23.4 +/- 4.6 yr of age. Intervention: Subjects made six visits to the research facility over a two-week period. On day one, the subject performed a 1RM elbow flexion test and was then randomly assigned to the WBPA or control group. Criterion measurements were taken on Day 2, prior to and immediately following performance of the eccentric exercise protocol (10 sets of 10 repetitions using 120% of 1RM) and after the recovery period. During all subsequent sessions (24, 48, 72, and 96 h) these data were collected before the WBPA or passive recovery was provided. Main Outcome Measures: Isometric strength (MVC), blood markers (CPK, MYO, IL-6, TNF-alpha and Uric Acid), soreness, pain, circumference, and range of motion (ROM). Results: Significantly higher MVC values were seen for the WBPA group across the entire 96 h recovery period. Additionally, within group differences were seen in CPK, MYO, IL-6, soreness, pain, circumference, and ROM showing a smaller impact and more rapid recovery by the WBPA group. Conclusion: Application of WBPA hastens recovery from DOMS after eccentric exercise. Given the lack of other potential mechanisms, these effects appear to be mediated by the increased NO release with WBPA.

The Effect of Passive Stretching and Isometric Contractions on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After a Typical Bout of Exercise

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is a common response to activities involving lengthening contractions. Muscle inflammation is associated with DOMS and may play an integral role in protecting a muscle from damage and soreness in response to subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. Research in animals has shown that prior exposure to passive stretching and isometric contractions of a muscle resulting in muscle inflammation attenuates the muscle inflammatory response following subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether passive stretching and isometric contractions in humans would reduce DOMS following a typical bout of resistance exercise. METHODS: Thirty untrained male subjects were assigned to a control (C), stretching (S) or isometric (I) contraction group (n=10/group). In the week prior to the typical resistance training bout subjects in S and I were exposed to 3 separate sessions involving 5 minutes of passive stretching or maximal isometric contractions, respectively. Passive and active soreness, thigh girth, and relaxed knee angle were assessed prior to intervention and on days 1, 2, 4, and 8 following the bout of resistance exercise. RESULTS: Passive and active muscle soreness increased similarly in all groups. However, active soreness returned higher values than passive soreness at several time points following resistance exercise. Peak soreness occurred at 48h post exercise. Thigh girth and relaxed knee angle reached their highest values at 5 minutes following resistance exercise however there were no differences between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that a typical bout of resistance exercise is sufficient to cause measurable levels of DOMS in untrained subjects and that subjects are more sensitive to active measures of DOMS compared to a passive assessment. Nevertheless the passive stretching and isometric contraction interventions did nothing to reduce DOMS in the current subjects.

Cette thèse présente l’édition critique du Mystère des trois doms (1509), d’après un manuscrit unique aujourd’hui conservé à la Bibliothèque nationale de France sous la cote n.a.f 18995. Ce texte dramatique en moyen français d’environ 11000 vers raconte la conversion puis le martyre des trois saints patrons de la ville de Romans, Séverin, Exupère, et Félicien ; il a été composé en vue d’une représentation, qui eut lieu trois jours durant dans cette même ville les 27, 28 et 29 mai 1509. Notre travail comporte plusieurs aspects distincts et complémentaires : une analyse philologique et historique, une présentation littéraire et une étude linguistique. Après avoir présenté les objectifs de notre travail, nous analysons la préparation de la représentation de 1509, tant du point de vue de l’écriture du mystère (analyse du manuscrit et des différentes étapes de sa composition) que du point de vue de la réalisation matérielle de l’entreprise (construction du théâtre et des décors). Nous possédons en effet également le livre des comptes du mystère, qui contient de précieuses informations sur les modalités d’organisation de sa représentation : il s’agit d’un cas unique, ce texte est donc d’une grande importance pour l’histoire du théâtre en France. Nous proposons ensuite une présentation du texte du mystère, une analyse des sources, de la mise en scène, et quelques éléments de versification et de stylistique. La langue du mystère étant d’une grande richesse, notre étude linguistique s’intéresse à plusieurs aspects : les systèmes graphiques des différents scribes, la régionalité de la langue et la représentation de l’oralité. Nous présentons enfin les principes qui ont guidé l’édition critique des trois journées du mystère. Celle-ci est suivie d’un relevé des nombreuses variantes et corrections contenues dans le manuscrit, de notes portant sur le texte, d’un glossaire et d’une bibliographie ; le volume contient enfin en annexes plusieurs planches du manuscrit. / This thesis presents a critical edition of the Mystère des Trois Doms (1509), from a single manuscript now kept in the National Library of France under the reference n.a.f 18995. This drama play in Middle French contains approximately 11,000 verses, and tells the conversion and martyrdom of the three patron saints of the town of Romans, Séverin, Exupère and Félicien; it was composed for a performance, which took place in the city during three days, on 27, 28 and 29 May 1509. Our work includes several distinct and complementary aspects: philological and historical analysis, literary presentation and linguistic study. After presenting the objectives of our work, we analyze the preparation of the 1509 performance, from a writing point of view (analysis of the manuscript and the various stages of its composition) as well as from the material realization of the representation (construction of the theater and scenery). Indeed, we also have the book of accounts of the mystery play, which contains valuable informations on organizational modalities of its representation: it is a unique case, making this text of great importance for the history of the theater in France. We then propose a presentation of the text of the mystery, an analysis of sources, staging, and some elements of versification and stylistics. The language of the mystery being very rich, our linguistic study focuses on several aspects: graphics systems of the different scribes, regionality of the language and representation of orality. Finally, we present the principles that guided our critical edition of the three days of the play, followed by an account of the various variants and corrections contained in the manuscript, some notes on the text, a glossary and a bibliography. The appendices of the volume also contain several boards of the manuscript.
