Control of human motoneurones during voluntary contraction and fatigue

Martin, Peter Glen, Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
All motor behaviours are expressed via the activation of alpha motoneurones, the final common path of the central nervous system. The corticospinal tract conveys neural information from the motor cortex to motoneurones. This thesis focuses on the corticospinal control of human motoneurones during voluntary contraction and fatigue. First, output of motoneurones to corticospinal inputs is described for a wide range of contraction strengths. Results show that motoneurones become less responsive during strong contractions whereas motor cortical output cells are not limited in the same way. Comparison of motoneurone output to different strength corticospinal inputs and of different motoneurone pools demonstrates an important role for motor unit firing rates in determining the excitability of motoneurones during strong contractions. Next, the reflex actions of group III and IV muscle afferents on motoneurones are investigated. These studies address a long and ongoing debate about the role of these afferents to the slowing of motor unit firing rates during sustained contractions. It was believed that these afferents inhibit motoneurones and contribute to fatigue. However, findings demonstrate that human motoneurones innervating extensor and flexor muscles are not uniformly affected by fatigue-sensitive afferents. Thus afferent inputs from homonymous and antagonist muscles depress extensor motoneurones but facilitate flexor motoneurones. When group III and IV muscle afferents are activated by hypertonic saline, motoneurones of both extensors and flexors are facilitated. This demonstrates parallel excitatory and inhibitory pathways from group III and IV muscle afferents to extensor motoneurones, which are activated under different conditions. Furthermore, the excitation is more pronounced for high-threshold motoneurones. In addition to the effects mediated at motoneurones, activity in group III and IV afferents inhibits motor cortical cells. The final studies investigate changes in the cervical propriospinal pathway with fatigue. This pathway transmits part of the voluntary drive to motoneurones, in parallel with the direct corticospinal pathway. The studies demonstrate that during fatigue, there are coordinated changes in the excitation mediated via this pathway to motoneurones of both fatigued and non-fatigued muscles of the upper limb. In summary, this thesis demonstrates novel aspects of the corticospinal control of motoneurones during voluntary contraction and fatigue.

Acute Effects Of Local Vibration On Muscle Performance At Different Durations And Frequencies

Yildirim, Ahmet 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the acute effects of local vibration on muscle performance at different durations and frequencies. Fifteen male handball players participated in the study voluntarily. University&rsquo / s Ethics Committee approved the study and the informed consent forms were filled by all participants. Different vibration durations, (10 sec, 1 min, 10 min), different frequencies (40 and 80 Hz), dominancy (dominant and non-dominant) and conditions (vibration and no-vibration) were independent variables of study. Dependent variables were maximum isometric strength measures under different situations. One way Repeated measures ANOVA, Bonferoni adjusted paired sample t-tests and Two way Repeated ANOVA was used for statistical analyses. Result of this study demonstrated that local vibration (LV) induced significantly higher muscle activity than no vibration (NV) condition. Strength improvements were obtained in quadriceps muscles of dominant and non-dominant legs for 40 Hz and 80 Hz. When 40 Hz vibration was applied to dominant leg with different durations (10 sec, 1 min, 10 min), significantly higher strength measures were found than no vibration. When 80 Hz vibration was applied to dominant leg with different durations (10 sec, 1 min, 10 min), only 10-sec vibration duration revealed significant increase in strength measures. When 40 Hz vibration was applied to non-dominant leg with different durations, (10 sec, 1 min, 10 min) significantly higher strength measures were found than no vibration. When 80 Hz vibration was applied to non-dominant leg with different durations (10 sec, 1 min, 10 min), 10-sec and 1 min vibration durations revealed significant increase in strength measures. However, no significant difference was obtained when the different vibration durations were compared between 40 Hz and 80 Hz.

Effects of Tool Weight on Fatigue and Performance During Short Cycle Overhead Work Operations

Kirst, Margaret Anne 31 December 1999 (has links)
This study is a subset of a larger body of research that examined shoulder time to fatigue during overhead work in an attempt to reduce the prevalence and impact of work-related musculoskeletal problems in the shoulder associated with overhead work, particularly during automobile assembly. Existing evidence suggests that shoulder injuries are diverse in terms of tissues affected and symptoms presented. Furthermore, the cause of these injuries is multifactorial. The work presented here assumes that musculoskeletal injuries of the shoulder mechanism are at least related to, if not caused by, fatigue localized to the shoulder musculature. While the exact relationship between fatigue and injury has not been clearly established, there is consensus among researchers that fatigue plays and important role. Muscular fatigue, therefore, is viewed as a surrogate measure of risk, and task design to avoid fatigue is seen as a rational method to minimize this risk. An experiment to determine the effects of tool weight on shoulder fatigue and performance during overhead work with work/rest cycles was performed. Times to fatigue were derived based on dependent measures including total task duration, controlled maximum muscle contractions, subjective ratings based on Borg's CR-10 RPE scale, electromyogram behavior (MdPF), and hand force performance measures. Experimental findings indicated that duty cycle (percentage of total task cycle time spent working) significantly affected task duration (p<0.0001), changes in maximum voluntary contraction values for the infraspinatus (p<0.05), and the minimum time for any shoulder muscle to fatigue as determined by changes in the EMG power spectrum (p<0.05). Time to fatigue for the mid deltoid as determined by changes in the median frequency of the EMG power spectrum was shown to change significantly (p<0.05) with change in tool weight. Large intersubject variation was observed for the dependent measures, which showed subjects experiencing different levels of fatigue while performing the same task. Limitations of the study and recommendations for future direction are also discussed. / Master of Science

Classification of muscle stretch receptor afferents in humans

Edin, Benoni B. January 1988 (has links)
The response patterns of human stretch receptors in the finger extensor muscles of the forearm were studied using the microneurography technique. Single-unit recordings were obtained from one-hundred and twenty-four afferents. A procedure was developed to classify the units in muscle spindle primary afferents, secondary afferents, and Golgi tendong organ afferents. The procedure allows an objective and reproducible classification on the basis of the afferents’ responses to a series of tests which individually are non-conclusive. It was demonstrated that maximal twitch contractions can be elicited in the finger extensor muscles of the forearm, without causing undue discomfort to the subjects, or hazarding the single-unit recording. The response of the units to this test allowed, in most cases but not always, a separation in muscle spindle and tendon organ afferents. Thus the test was not adequate for an unequivocal classification. Three discrete response parameters were extracted from ramp-and-hold stretches, viz. the presence or absence of an initial burst and a deceleration response, and prompt silencing at slow muscle shortening. The distributions of the parameters were significantly different among the three unit types. These parameters which were pair-wise independent constituted a set of considerable discriminative power. It was shown that human muscle spindles have about the same static position sensitivity to fractional muscle stretch as previously found in animals. Stretch sensitization was demonstrated by rapid, repeated stretches of the muscle which enhanced the réponse to subsequent slow stretches of muscle spindles. Sensitization was different with primary and secondary muscle spindle afferents whereas Golgi tendon organ afferents never displayed stretch sensitization. One-to-one driving with small-amplitude sinusoidal stretches superimposed on ramp-and- hold stretches was almost exclusively seen with primary muscle spindle afferents, whereas secondaries seldom and tendon organ afferents never displayed driving. The afferent responses during slowly increasing isometric contractions and rapid relaxations were analysed. An increased discharge rate on relaxation was common among spindle afferents whereas it was never seen in tendon organs afferents. Two separate groups of spindles afferents were found with regard to fusimotor recruitment. The largest group was recruited at rather low and variable contractile forces whereas the smaller group was not recruited at all. The proportions of the three unit types, spindle primary, spindle secondary, and Golgi tendon organ afferents were estimated from a preliminary classification and the distribution of the eight response features were analyzed for each class of afferents. On the basis of these estimates and the response pattern of the individual unit Bayes’ theorem was used to calculate the probabilities that the unit was a spindle primary, a spindle secondary, or a tendon organ afferent. Estimates indicate that about 19 out of 20 muscle afferents are correctly classified when all eight features are analyzed. / <p>Diss. Conséquences de contractions musculaires volontaires et électro-induites exhaustives sur le contrôle postural bipodal et la fatigue centrale / Consequences of voluntary and stimulated fatiguing muscular contractions on bipedal postural control and central fatique

Felipe Fernandez, Emma 12 December 2011 (has links)
The overall objective of this thesis was to compare the effect of fatigue of the quadriceps femoris after fatiguing voluntary contractions (VOL) and fatiguing neuromuscular electrical stimulation (ES) on bipedal postural control, and central fatigue. The results show that after unilateral or bilateral muscle fatigue, the ES exercise affected the muscle strength more than the VOL exercise. However, bipedal postural control was similarly deteriorated for both exercises. Moreover, the recovery speeds of postural control and muscle strength abilities did not differ for the both exercises. In addition, the VOL exercise alters central drive quicker than the ES exercise immediately after their completion while the ES exercise delays and prolongs the central fatigue. As the VOL exercise is induced by central command and the ES exercise is generated by artificial external stimulation, one can hypothesize that the VOL exercise especially produces supraspinal fatigue, while the ES exercise especially engenders spinal fatigue.

Plasticité de la fonction posturale : effet de l’entraînement controlatéral et influence de la latéralité du membre inférieur sur le contrôle postural monopodal / Plasticity of the postural function : effect of the contralateral training and influence of the laterality of the lower limb on the monopodal postural control

Kadri, Mohamed Abdelhafid 05 March 2018 (has links)
The overall objective of this thesis was to study the plasticity of postural function by investigating the effects of a unilateral training program or a sport and/or motor experience. Hence, the effects of various types of chronic (voluntary and electro-induced) and acute exercises (repeated postural task, warm-up and fatigue) were tested on monopodal postural control in static and dynamic conditions. The main findings show that the unilateral training program of voluntary contractions and electro-induced contractions did not improve postural control of the ipsilateral and contralateral limbs despite the increase in muscle strength for both in healthy non-active young adults. The lack of postural control outcome may be primarily related to the conditions of training programs that were not sufficiently close to the ecological conditions of postural control. In contrast, non-fatiguing high-intensity exercise such as warm-up improved monopodal postural control in young sports students regardless of which leg they were assessed. However, this improvement does not appear until 10-15 minutes according to the considered leg after stopping the exercise. Moreover, in athletes practicing symmetrical and asymmetrical sports, the non-fatiguing, acute exercises such as the repetition of a postural task and the warm-up, generated beneficial effects on the static monopodal postural control and enabled to distinguish the dominant leg of the non-dominant leg. In contrast, the fatiguing acute exercise disrupted postural control regardless of the nature of sport practiced and the leg assessed.

Adaptations neuromusculaires des muscles extenseurs du genou : contractions fatigantes uni- vs bi-latérales / Neuromuscular adaptations of knee extensor muscles : uni versus bi-lateral fatiguing contractions

Matkowski, Boris 17 December 2010 (has links)
The aim of this work was to determine i) the influence of the level of absolute force on the duration of the endurance time, and subsequent neuromuscular alterations in same individual at the end of an exercise performed at the same relative intensity, with one or two legs, ii) the influence of central drive on the force capacity production of the knee extensor muscles during unilateral (UL) vs. bilateral (BL) contractions, iii) activation mechanisms evolution for a serie of submaximal evoked contractions by electrostimulation (EMS). The results of the first study confirm that the endurance limit depends on the level of absolute force for the same individual, contraction duration for UL is 20% longer than for BL. In addition, a correlation was found between the maximal voluntary contraction force (MVC) and the endurance time in UL and BL. However, other mechanisms also appear to be involved, because in one case the mechanisms are nervous and muscular (UL), while in other cases the mechanisms are only nervous (BL). The results of the second study show that maximal force developed during BL contraction is less than the sum of the forces of UL contraction (i.e. a bilateral deficit). The timing of MVC peak force production during each leg of MVC are not different from that of BL MVC, but the force developed during the latter is less than the sum of MVC in both legs during the BL MVC, i.e. the maximum force produced by each leg during BL MVC. However, no difference in EMG activity, M-wave amplitude, doublet and level of activation was observed between UL and BL conditions. The results of the third study show that the estimation of the central drive, by the technique of superimposed twitch during a submaximal fatiguing effort presents methodological bias. However, estimation of neural mechanisms with both conventional methods (voluntary level activation (VAL) and central activation ratio (CAR)) remains relevant during maximal voluntary contractions. This work évidences the presence of different nervous mechanisms between UL and BL contractions
