Taking a Functional Approach to Volunteering: Explaining Volunteer Congruence and Work EngagementGass, Jessica A. 14 November 2024 (has links)
Using the functional approach to volunteering as a basis, I investigated the implications of volunteer motivation congruence (i.e., a match between motivations to volunteer and the satisfaction of those motivations) for work recovery and downstream work engagement. I focused on career and understanding-based volunteer motives and psychological detachment and mastery recovery experiences. This was evaluated using a cross-sectional survey with a sample (N = 119) of employees with past volunteering experience. I found that psychological detachment was higher when career motives were greater than career motive satisfaction. Agreement between motives and satisfaction for both career and understanding motivations was also found to be more important than disagreement for predicting mastery experiences. Neither recovery variable (detachment and mastery experiences) was found to predict work engagement. No hypothesized indirect effects of the work recovery variables on the relationship between volunteer congruence and work engagement were supported. Overall, the results show a novel pattern of findings that encourages future research on volunteer motivation congruence and recovery experiences. / Master of Science / Many American employees also participate in volunteer work outside of their jobs. However, it is important to investigate whether this is beneficial for recovering from work stress since volunteering may be additionally taxing. Within this study, I look at whether a match between a person’s motivations to volunteer and the satisfaction of those motivations predicts recovery from work. I additionally look at whether that work recovery subsequently predicts engagement at work. Specifically, I focused on career and understanding-based volunteer motivations. I also focused on the work recovery experiences of psychological detachment from work and mastery experiences. I looked at these relationships using results from 119 participants who took a single survey. I found that psychological detachment was higher when career motives were greater than career motive satisfaction (in other words when the career motives were left unsatisfied). Neither recovery variable (detachment and mastery experiences) was found to predict work engagement.

Previous issue date: 2012-10-04 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The present study has proposed a structural model to identify the reasons why individuals
become voluntary, keep and exit this type of work. The empirical space was the Pastoral da
Crian?a - social action agency of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) -
community-based institution that has its work based on solidarity and the sharing of
knowledge. The theoretical framework has the context in which are volunteering studies in
Brazilian and world level. Then discuss the various concepts of volunteering and presented
the theoretical models of volunteer motivation. Studies of Mostyn (1983) and studies
conducted by the BEPEGE-Base for Studies and Research in Management Policies and
Strategies - in their line of research GERQUAL - Human Resource Management and
Organizational Quality - of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte as Carvalho e
Souza(2006), Souza, Medeiros e Fernandes (2006), Souza et al (2009, 2010), Cavalcante et al
(2011a, 2011b, 2011c, 2011d) were the main theoretical references for the construction of the
model that was tested. Data collection was done through a survey with 71 indicators, in 2
visits to cities from the Diocese of Pesqueira, Pernambuco. The first data collection occurred
in the period between May 30 and June 3, 2011, in Buique/PE and the second collection
happened in Pesqueira/PE, in St. Joseph Seminary, in the period between July 6-8, 2011. 720
questionnaires were collected. The sample was divided into two parts. Exploratory Factor
Analysis was applied in first part and Confirmatory Factor Analysis - structural equation
modeling - in the second half. The examination of the results achieved by the expectations,
reasons for entry, reasons for staying and exit reasons showed that all hypotheses were
accepted. So the motivation of voluntary Pastoral da Crian?a can be explained by a set of
interactions between these five constructs: Altruistic, Affectionate, Amiable, Adjusted and

Education, volunteer work and enterprise social responsibility: \"amigos da escola\" and other forms of participation.Souza, Silvana Aparecida de 10 April 2008 (has links)
The thesis deals with a research that looks for the intersections among education, volunteer work and Enterprise Social Responsibility (ESR), in the current historical moment of the capitalist society, concerning what started being called \"flexible accumulation\". The \"Amigos da Escola\" project, implemented by Rede Globo de Televisão, is the biggest ESR project in education in Brazil and encourages the development of volunteer work in public schools. The analysis demonstrates that the modifications that happened in the last decades in the volunteer work format in the social field are related to a set of palliative actions, developed during the term of capitalist society, to attenuate the social crisis caused by the structural unemployment, together with the social rights being reduced to the minimum possible and redirected to individual responsibility. Moreover, the social responsibility activities improve the image of the enterprises which develop them, as well as their products and, therefore, are translated in an increase of profit. Based on the worth theory of Karl Marx, leaving from the concept of work in general as a potentially emancipating activity and the concept of work in the capitalist society as a necessarily inherent and involuntary activity, and, considering that nowadays, to make the \"employability\" profile it became necessary the development of volunteer social activities by the worker, it\'s possible to conclude that the volunteer work linked to ESR actions becomes involuntary, forced, when it constitutes the group of assignments and conditions of the individual work strength selling relationships in the capitalist society, for it increases the possibility of monetary fulfillment of value-added in circulation, before competition. The education is the major field chosen for the development of ESR actions due to the fact that it propitiates a detachment of the assisting perspective, which has a pejorative tone and the approach to the perspective of social sustainability, which has great acceptability. The field research, qualitative, in the form of case study and ethnographic inspiration, was done in two state public schools registered in the \"Amigos da Escola\" project and showed: that most of the individual volunteer work is not continuous, and therefore contributes in nothing to the development of the schools activities; that there is a unanimous rejection towards the project from Rede Globo among the interviewees, who don\'t notice any improvement or change in the school after it was registered; that, despite the denial of the project from Rede Globo, the participation nature of the volunteers in the school is identical to the one that is presented in the material that the project sends to all the registered schools, in which the participation is not related to the democratization of management processes, but to the execution of previously determined tasks; that the enterprises choose schools that serve the most lacking social groups, in economical terms, to develop their Social Responsibility actions, for it\'s where the social tension is more latent; that, if the \"Amigos da Escola\" project offers any advantage, it is for Rede Globo, which projects for itself an image of a company that invests in social activities.

A pilot investigation of the volunteer work participation of mental health consumersYoung, Janelle Margaret January 2008 (has links)
Mental illness is often associated with social isolation, unemployment and limited community participation. Mental health rehabilitation services aim to decrease these psychosocial effects of illness and encourage better community integration for mental health consumers. Volunteer work is one avenue in which consumers can become actively involved with their local communities. However whilst often supported clinically, limited empirical evidence exists which supports the use of volunteer work as a potential mode of rehabilitation for consumers. The overall aim of this study was to document consumer perceptions and experiences with volunteer work and to identify if participation in volunteer work has a positive impact on their mental health. Phase one of this study involved in-depth interviews with nine consumers currently volunteering. Themes identified from these interviews supported the notion that volunteer work is a meaningful occupation for consumers and one which promotes community integration and supports consumer recovery. Findings from the interviews also guided the development of a volunteer scale for later use within the study. Phase two involved the development and pilot testing of a volunteering questionnaire which measured consumer attitudes and experiences with volunteer work. This scale was combined with other standardised tests which measured the mental health variables of personal empowerment and quality of life. Phase three involved the administration of the questionnaire battery developed in phase two. The battery was distributed and completed by thirty consumers, including both those who were and were not volunteering. Analysis conducted identified that overall consumers held a positive view of volunteer work, believing it was a way of developing work skills, friendships and promoting positive mental health. / Analysis comparing the volunteering to the non volunteering group indicated that those volunteering experienced better quality of life, specifically within the psychological health, social relationships and personal environment domains. This provides support for the hypothesis that participation in volunteer work promotes consumer recovery. However, age was identified as a potential confounding variable and so the significant results should be viewed with caution. Cost, stigma and becoming unwell during volunteering were identified as barriers to consumer participation. It is argued that mental health services are in a good position to support consumers not only to access but also to maintain ongoing volunteer participation. To date minimal evidence has existed that supported this intervention. This study has begun to fill this research void, however, small study numbers and the cross-sectional, descriptive design make establishing a cause and effect relationship impossible. It would thus be beneficial to conduct a larger study investigating the impact further, including measuring the influence of any interventions that promote consumer participation in volunteer work, such as supported volunteering.

Marketing Strategy of Non-Profit Organization¡XA Case Study on Eden Public Welfare CenterHsuan, Yuan-Fan 01 July 2011 (has links)
Non profit organization do not focus on marketing strategy since its¡¦ purpose is not
making profits; however, the numbers of non-profit organizations is increasing rapidly, it is
more competitive among the organizations to share the resource such as volunteer workers,
donation and service customers. Therefore, putting no efforts but just waiting for donation is
no longer helpful to non-profit organizations, learning how to adapt marketing strategy to
non-profit organization becomes inevitable to all the non-profit organizations.
The purpose of the research is to learn marketing strategy from Eden Social Welfare
Foundation. We use marketing mix to analyze its¡¦ new product ¡§Eden Oversea Working
Holidays¡¨, and to see if it can help meet Eden¡¦s requirement to achieve its¡¦ goals and
missions. Also, we put the case into some theories and models through literature review, try
to find out the advantages and weaknesses of the product, and summarize the results in order
to let other non-profit or profit organizations to refer to.
The scope of the research includes recent situations of non-profit organizations in
Taiwan, and most of the oversea volunteer work camps held by charity foundations. We try
to analyze all its competitors and then give a brief introduction of Eden Social Welfare
Foundation and the department which hold the activity ¡§Eden Oversea Working Holidays¡¨.
We had an interview with manager from Public Welfare Center in Eden, and summarize the
results and our findings as following:
(1)On-line marketing and word of mouth is more proper if use on long-term strategy since it
takes longer to see the efforts.
(2) People nowadays are no longer satisfied with normal travel package.
(3)It¡¦s feasible to adapt the concepts of after-sales in tour industry.
(4) The best way to earn customer¡¦s trust is to let them see and join your service.
(5)Inviting old customers to speak for your product not only make them feel successful but
also cost less.
In the end of the research, we gave some advices to Eden Social Welfare Foundation
and people who want to continue the topic of research.

Why did they do it? : A survey of voluntary workers who built Levene Arena?Sälleberg, Johan January 2014 (has links)
De bakomliggande motivationsfaktorerna var hela tiden att göra något för en stark och levande bygd samt att göra något för barnen / Voluntary work was a contributing factor to how Levene society in Vara municipality could build a sport and event hall. This study aims to explain why residents of Levene lined up and spend a lot of their spare time with building the sport and event hall. This is done by focusing on the motivational factors that motivated the voluntary workers. By using qualitative interviews, a material was gathered, and then analyzed. The result shows that the residents of Levene was motivated by a strong vision and the fact that a lot of people where involved project from the start. Furthermore, during construction, it was first and foremost social interaction and the opportunity to try something new that motivated them to continue. The underlying motivational factors were the opportunity to do something for the children and to keep the community vibrant and attractive

Varför volontärresor? : En undersökande studie om motiveringen kring volontärresandeFredriksen, Tina January 2014 (has links)
The focus of this study is to dig deeper into what motivates volunteer travelers. The commercial side of volunteer travelling has increased in the past years, and young Swedes pay large amounts of money to travel to other countries and work as volunteers. The purpose of this study is to get a glimpse into what motivates these young people, and how this correlates to the rapid increase of commercial travelling bureaus that focus on volunteer travelling. Five people under the age of 30, who had been volunteering through a commercial travelling agency, where interviewed for this study. The results show that the main motivation for paying to go work abroad is actually the experience, meeting new people and seeing new things. The motivational factor of helping people turned out to be secondary.

diaconia.
This paper wants to contribute in the analysis of the specific reality of a community
located in a peripheral region of Guarapari in Espírito Santo State. The work is
guided in the assessment and consequent importance of volunteer work in churches
and also in discovering the true meaning of the Mission and diakonia. This is to
evaluate the second moment of theology, that is a reflection to get a first act that was
the elaboration of a project to mitigate the social hardships of families living in the
neighborhood Lameirão, in Guarapari. This first response is motivated by faith. In the
Brazilian context, it is worth noting that evangelical churches today do not have to
pay due attention to the Mission and Diakonia. Certainly, this work is a way to be
rediscovering the importance of the contribution of Mission and Diakonia, not only the
Church but to society.
