Nel, Pieter Gabriël 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The background for this study is a survey undertaken by a cluster of congregations in the Wonderboom area of Pretoria, which revealed that their youth ministries are becoming increasingly ineffective. This worldwide trend is related to the reality that traditional program-based approaches to youth ministry not longer reach modern young people. This study proposes that a choice be made for a relationship based youth ministry that focuses on the communication of faith through the building of relationships of trust between adult mentors and the youth. Churches and the youth would benefit from choosing a relationship-based youth ministry. A relational approach demands enough volunteer youth workers who are qualified to work with contemporary adolescents. The study therefore proposes guidelines for the recruitment, selection, training and utilisation of volunteer youth workers, as well as for the implementation of a relational youth ministry in the Dutch Reformed Church. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. The influence of a changing society on young adults’ exodus from the church over the last fifty years in South Africa

Rose, Howard Richard January 2019 (has links)
Today’s world in the new Millennium is a far cry from church and home life for young people (18-30) fifty years ago, where quantum change on top of change, and disconnectedness in family structures, have all contributed in various ways to an exodus of young people from mainline churches throughout the world. To counteract this ongoing trend, significant effort has been applied by mainline churches throughout the world, and South Africa in particular, to grow young people in the “Faith”, all of which has resulted in young people continuing to exodus the church after confirmation or graduating from high school. However, the bottom line challenge being faced is not simply one sided with young people exiting the church - for so called ‘better’ activities, but that the church has also not found an effective strategy for engaging with non-churched young people (those who have never been to a church) and those who used to actively participate, but have now abandoned the church and its ministry. Parents of today’s young people to a great extent have failed to understand and recognize that it is impossible for their children to accept the ‘faith and truth’ if they don’t role model and practice it in their homes. Similarly, if they don’t help their children to see and understand how faith is applied and has meaning in their everyday lives, then the current status quo between children, family and church will continue to grow exponentially. The church, and more particularly parents, need to understand and listen to the young people’s postmodern views and how it has reshaped their lives, in comparison to the preceding generations. By adopting the conclusions and broad practical recommendations from this research, churches may be able to reach out more effectively to parents, children and young people, to help them discover a life changing relationship – in their walk with Jesus Christ / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. `n Ondersoek na die gebruik van geselekteerde inisiatiefaktiwiteite in diverse jeuggroepe

Yates, Charl 30 November 2004 (has links)
Summaries in Afrikaans and English / This research has shown that young people of different cultural groups have had and still have limited contact due to the history of our country. This contributed to the fact that there were, and still are, very few opportunities to build relationships. An introductory chapter in which the research methodology is explained, is followed by a discussion utilizing recent literature, of the question how the building of relationships can take place within the context of a diverse youth ministry (chapter 2). It became clear that the church, in its ministry to diverse youth groups, should create opportunities where the quality of relationships can be enhanced. In the research it was found that experiential learning activities, such as initiative activities, could have a positive influence on interpersonal skills in intercultural relationships (chapters 3 and 4). In chapter 5, firstly, certain conclusions were drawn. Secondly, recommendations were made and guidelines formulated regarding the building of relationships in the ministry to diverse youth groups. In hoofstuk 5 is eerstens bepaalde gevolgtrekkings gemaak. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Youth Work)

Basiese elemente van 'n effektiewe jeugbediening

Engelbrecht, Gert Hermias 03 1900 (has links)
Youth ministry m most mainstream churches is characterised by the following: It is program- and tradition-driven. No purpose-driven plan and -strategy are visible. The focus is on maintaining the youth group, programs and activities. The potential target groups, their levels of faith commitment and their needs are not identified properly. A purpose-driven youth ministry strategy may be a possible solution to the above-mentioned problems. It should especially give attention to the following: Focus on a clear purpose statement, on young people's needs and on a purpose-driven approach. In particular, there should be a 5pesific style or approach with which youth ministry is launched, namely an intergenerational strategy. The congregation as a community of faith and as a lifelong care structure should be the context within youth ministry occurs. A program planning process will prevent the planning to be done haphazardly and impetuously. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M.Diac. (Jeugwerk)

Runaway and Homeless Youth: Changing the Discourse by Legitimizing Youth Voice

Schweitzer, Donald Dale 01 January 2011 (has links)
Undoubtedly, runaway and homeless youth (RHY) are one of the most vulnerable, yet underserved groups in our country. Well-meaning advocates have developed programs and services in an attempt to remedy this, yet there is little evidence of their effectiveness. Moreover, according to the research literature, a low utilization rate of current services by youth is a major concern. From a constructivist theoretical position, this study posits that the missing element is youth voice and the researcher hired formerly homeless youth to conduct the analysis of focus group data gathered from RHY who were participating in a range of services funded by the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act. By employing participatory action research (PAR) methods, this study privileges youth voice and asks two research questions; 1) what are current program models doing right with regards to RHY services, and 2) what can be learned by employing youth analysts in research. Findings indicate that how services are offered is as important as what services are offered. Additionally, by privileging youth and providing meaningful participation, youth are exceptionally capable to develop and evaluate services, programs and policy. Youth workers must continue to privilege youth voice if they hope to effect change in the lives of young people. If not, services will continue to play a key role in keeping RHY as one of the most marginalized groups in our society.

Knispel, Martin 31 July 2003 (has links)
Text in German / This dissertation describes and interprets the history of Presbyterian Youth Ministry from the beginning up to today. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana originated from the work of the Basel Mission, Switzerland and the United Free Church of Scotland. The emphasis on education, laid by the Basel Mission has had a major impact for the Church and especially for Youth Ministry. This emphasis was seen through the building of Schools, Training Institutions and through practical training of young people. Andrew Atkinson, a Scottish accountant at the then Gold Coast, laid the foundation for youth work within the Church. Very soon this ministry developed throughout the country. With the formation of a Youth Constitution as the basis for youth work, a good framework was established that still guides the Youth today. Today, Youth work has been broadened. Through different projects it is envisaged to give answers to the manifold problems of young people in a fast changing African society. Social projects, HIV/AIDS work, but at first the training of young people is a major part of youth work today. Conferences are held on different levels, training materials have been developed and youth workers have been trained to take up future responsibilities as leaders. One emphasis has remained and has its roots in the Basel Mission history: a Bible based youth ministry that equips young people to follow Christ as disciples in their day-to-day lives. Within this success story there has of course also been some failure and weakness. Both, success and struggle is evident within this dissertation. / Missiology / M. Th (Missiology)

Knispel, Martin 31 July 2005 (has links)
Text in German / This doctoral thesis deals with the changes the youth grapple with in Southern Ghana today. These changes permeate all fabrics of society, from the traditional society with its values to the modern society that is undergoing radical social changes. The First Part presents to the reader the traditional Akan Society. It points out how it has assisted young people to get into the world of the adult. It gives an insight into the traditional religions, the rites and practices associated with them and their relation to young people. The Second Part deals with the History of the Presbyterian Youth Work from its inception to the present day. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana was set up in the early 20th Century from the toils of the Basel Mission and the United Free Church of Scotland. This new Christian way of life brought a clash between two world views: the traditional African Religion (ATR) and the Christian Religion that brought about, so to say, farreaching consequences to the culture and the development of the country. Part three focuses attention on the present changes in the Ghanaian Society. It shows the effects of migration and the economic conditions on the Ghanaian Society at the turn of the 21st Century especially for young people. Part four sums up the findings and discusses them on the basis of two leading concepts: Contextualization and Identity. I evaluated a contextualization project of a church parish in southern Ghana. Here are, in my opinion, the first signs that could show the way into the future, i.e. a way of preaching the Gospel within the context of the traditional mindset of the local people by taking into account the Ghanaian Culture and with due regard to the feelings of the youth. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Refleksief-teologiese besinning oor kerklike onderrig aan adolessente

Voges, Johannes Hendrik 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is the result of a qualitative research on theories and practices which are followed or assumed to be followed in the religious education of the Dutch Reformed Church. The research was done by means of a theological reflective approach. The study concludes that the solution for effective teaching by the church lies within the process of renewal (and change) within each congregation; a process that leads to a model of ministry that will be unique to that congregation. This process of renewal must take place in the understanding and practice of church education by the synod, church councils and congregations. Ultimately this takes place within the context of the local church. But then as a renewal that should be more than just another way to change the praxis to accommodate the status quo, for this would transform the status quo into an ideology. Renewal is likewise not a quest to sanctify that which seems to work, irrepective of the theories and methods which are implicated, this would lead to an illegal pragmatism. Nor should renewal be confused with change, for not all changes necessarily causes any renewal per se. An important aspect in this process of renewal, is not the grip that the church has on its youth, but the chance(s) they are given to discover their own religious convictions in their congregation; this needs a differentiated education approach because of the differentiation during adolescence; the church will have to learn to speak in a language which make sense in their daily reality and to give them the chance to express their own experiences and questions in the language of religion. This means that the church will have to understand their context of lifestyle and peergoup influences and accordingly address the cognitive, affective and conative aspects of religious education. In the church religious education to adolescents, communicating and experiencing religion is sometimes more important than the knowledge they should obtain. The developmental processes of adolescents, the shaping of their convictions of faith and the teaching of the church strongly influences their ultimate religious maturity and spirituality. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.
