“Waste prevention is one of those difficult things” - An interview study in collaboration with the Översta steget project on Skåne municipalities choice to work with waste prevention

Bendahl, Linn, Karlsson, Elin January 2017 (has links)
The advantages of preventing waste have proven to be many: savings in money and resources, improved work environment, etc. Despite this, development of waste prevention has been slow, and few municipalities have prioritized the top step of the waste management hierarchy. In 2017, the coaching project, Översta steget, was initiated to get more municipalities in Skåne to work on waste prevention. The project focus was on the municipalities' own activities. All of Skåne’s 33 municipalities in Skåne were invited to the join the project, but only 4 have chosen to participate. In the present study, 13 municipalities have been interviewed about their decisions regarding the project in general and waste prevention in particular. We have identified three main categories of obstacles; communicative barriers, organizational barriers and obstacles connected to our economic system. Prevention of waste is, because it is new area of work, not concrete enough and difficult mediated/experienced difficult. What has tempted the municipalities to participate in the project is the economic savings that can be made and that the project offers coaching. Improved environmental performance also is a secondly reason. We believe that the results and benefits of waste prevention must be spread smartly across different types of networks in order to initiate the call on prevention. This way it can also be more concrete and made more receptive to municipalities and their staff.

Synthesis of NIR-emitting InAs-based core/shell quantum dots with the use of tripyrazolylarsane as arsenic precursor

Tietze, Remo, Panzer, Rene, Starzynski, Thorben, Guhrenz, Chris, Frenzel, Florian, Würth, Christian, Resch-Genger, Ute, Weigand, Jan J., Eychmüller, Alexander 02 May 2019 (has links)
Tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)arsane (1) is introduced as an low-cost and convenient to handle arsenic precursor for the straight forward synthesis of InAs quantum dots (QDs). Transamination of 1 with the solvent oleylamine (OLAH) gives trioleylarsane (As(OLA)3) which in the presence of the reducing agents DIBAL-H or P(OLA)3 yields InAs QDs via a typical hot injection approach. The size of the obtained InAs core QDs are tuned by varying the reaction time, the amount of the applied reducing agent, or even more effectively by changing the indium and/or zinc halide precursors, InX3 and ZnX2 (Cl, Br, or I). Passivation of the resulting InAs particles with a protective ZnS or ZnSe shell results in improved photoluminescence (PL) of the core/shell QDs covering a spectral range between 600–1150 nm.

Disposing the future : An institutional analysis of municipal food waste prevention in Sweden

Onn, Beatrice January 2021 (has links)
Food waste is a complex issue with environmental, social, and economic consequences. Approximately one third of the food produced for human consumption is annually wasted and the need to prevent food waste is discussed in the public debate, policy outcomes, and sustainable development goals. Food waste prevention is complex and need to be practiced all along the food supply chain. In Sweden, municipalities are self-governing entities that have been assigned the formal responsibility to prevent food waste among households and municipal functions. However, the distributed responsibility and complexity around food waste prevention entail various barriers to successfully implement food waste prevention strategies. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate how institutions influence municipal food waste prevention. The study is inspired by an ethnographic approach and is founded on an empirical material consisting of 137 waste plans and 10 interviews with municipal and public authority representatives. An institutional perspective is applied to understand how institutions influence municipal food waste prevention. The results from the analysis conclude that a) food waste prevention strategies in Sweden construct the consumer as the main cause of food waste generation; b) the institutionalized freedom of choice is perceived as a barrier to implement stronger food waste prevention strategies such as regulation or legislation; and c) institutions offer an important component to understand the construction of the problem around food waste prevention.

Reducing fabric consumption : by improving marker efficiency

Widanalage, Varuna Lasantha Kumara, Kizilirmak, Serkan January 2020 (has links)
Resource degradation is a significant problem in the world, which is directly related to the textile and fashion industry. Efficient use of the material has been identified as an essential aspect to be addressed seriously. It is a critical topic that has attracted the attention of people and companies in recent years and has become a fundamental issue of sustainability. This research study was based on UN sustainable development goals number 12 and 8, which focuses on resource efficiency. The research is designed in considering fabric consumption, which has a significant impact on the textile and clothing industry to contribute to a brighter future and a more sustainable life. The purpose of this study is to reduce the fabric consumption through improving marker efficiency. The research focuses on investigating the behaviour of marker efficiency concerning usable fabric widths, markers with different sizes and marker with style combinations to reduce fabric consumption. The improvements of the existing markers lead to reduce fabric wastage during the cutting process while improving resource efficiency in consumption and production. In this study, the explanatory sequential design of mixed research method is employed with carrying out experiments to collect and analyze quantitative data, explained and elaborated with qualitative findings through expert interviews to get insights into the quantitative findings in a deductive approach. The marker efficiency significantly varies according to the combination of sizes and style and usable fabric width. The improvements of the marker efficiency, reduce the fabric consumption per garment and increase resource efficiency while preventing waste generation. A saving of 1% of a material which consumed millions of tons per year, significantly affect on reducing resource depletion and environmental pollution. This study is limited to five usable fabric widths, four size marker combinations and two style combinations. Moreover, it is focused on material efficiency, and cost efficiency is not considered. There are possibilities for clothing manufactures’ to improve resource efficiency by improving marker efficiency while planning the demand, considering multi-size and multi-style markers. They can concern usable fabric widths, which provide higher marker efficiencies during material purchasing.

Food Waste Diversion Programming in Post-Secondary Education

Alattar, Manar Arica 30 March 2018 (has links)
The urgent need for reform of USA and global food systems is evident in the pervasiveness of both food waste and food insecurity. Such an inefficient system strains the environmental, social, and economic systems on which it relies. Although policy and infrastructure changes are essential, consumers can play a significant role by decreasing their food waste, given that consumer waste represents 60% of the waste along the food cycle in developed countries. Incorporation of food literacy and food waste education in school curricula may provide a meaningful entry point for promoting food waste reduction skills. This dissertation presents context on the suitability of food systems for science and climate change education. Practical implementation of this concept is then explored through a survey of 495 students at Portland State University that presents the reported knowledge, attitudes, emotions, and beliefs related to food waste. The underlying factors that influence student food waste behavior and intent to change such behavior are likewise explored. I also provide a description and assessment of a food waste diversion program, No Scrap Left Behind, that was developed and piloted at PSU. I found that knowledge, attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and reported food-related behaviors were generally positive. Students were also interested in taking action and perceived that their food-related actions could make a difference. Intent to change food waste behaviors was influenced by: 1) sustainability actions, 2) food waste diversion actions, 3) attitudes about composting, 4) composting, 5) reported household food waste, 6) material reuse attitudes. Reported food waste diversion behaviors were related to: 1) intent to reduce food waste, 2) knowledge and attitudes towards composting, and 3) attitudes about reuse. The measures of reported knowledge, attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors were not significantly influenced by No Scrap Left Behind programming, but actual measured food waste was decreased by one-fourth both over an academic year and within an academic term of programming. This indicates that students are amenable to food waste behavior change when given the encouragement and infrastructure to make that change. Further research may consider opportunities for food waste education beyond the cafeteria setting, particularly as an entry into more complex discussions around environmental, social, and economic systems and concepts.

Versatile Tri(pyrazolyl)phosphanes – Application as phosphorus precursors for the synthesis of highly emitting InP/ZnS quantum dots

Panzer, Rene, Guhrenz, Chris, Haubold, Danny, Hübner, Rene, Gaponik, Nikolai, Eychmüller, Alexander, Weigand, Jan J. 29 August 2018 (has links)
Tri(pyrazolyl)phosphanes (5R1,R2) are utilized as an alternative, cheap and low-toxic phosphorus source for the convenient synthesis of InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs). From these precursors, remarkably long-term stable stock solutions (>6 months) of P(OLA)3 (OLAH = oleylamine) are generated from which the respective pyrazoles are conveniently recovered. P(OLA)3 acts simultaneously as phosphorus source and reducing agent in the synthesis of highly emitting InP/ZnS core/shell QDs. These QDs are characterized by a spectral range between 530–620 nm and photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) between 51–62%. A proof-of-concept white light-emitting diode (LED) applying the InP/ZnS QDs as color conversion layer was built to demonstrate their applicability and processibility.

Plýtvání potravinami v USA jako otázka tvorby federální politiky / Food Waste in the United States as an Issue of Federal Public Policy Making

Hlaváčková, Anna January 2020 (has links)
The Master's thesis "Food Waste in the United States as an Issue of Federal Public Policy Making" analyzes the role of the federal government in dealing with food waste. It mainly focuses on federal legislation, but it also examines actions on the state level to illustrate the contrast between the two. In the thesis, the author examines the causes and sources of food waste, federal jurisdiction for intervention, and the history of passed legislation, as well as proposed legislation, and solutions. The main goal of the thesis is to demonstrate that federal involvement is fundamental in achieving any significant change, but so far has failed to do so. Primary literature consisting largely of bills, materials published by federal agencies, and reports by non-profit organizations were used to uncover the character of passed legislation. Academic secondary literature in the form of articles, reports, and factsheets offered context to understand the scope and impacts of the legislation. Analysis of those sources revealed federal authority to deal with the issue, as well as possible obstacles standing in the way of an extensive federal intervention. Research also showed that in the absence of federal action, some states have stepped up to introduce legislation to reduce food waste, but this legislation is...

Responsabilidade compartilhada pelo ciclo de vida do produto na cadeia de resíduos eletroeletrônicos / Product lifecycle shared responsibility in the supply chain of waste electrical and electronic equipment

Mendes, João Múcio Amado 26 March 2015 (has links)
The aim of this work was the legal analysis of product lifecycle shared responsibility and its implications in the supply chain of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), within the scope of the Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy, established by Federal Law 12,305/2010. The analysis encompassed the main duties related to waste prevention and reverse logistics, with a particular focus on the WEEE integrated management. Based on the principles of polluter pays, cooperation, prevention and precaution, the product lifecycle shared responsibility requires the supply chain to prioritize waste prevention and reduction measures through an eco-design approach for products and packaging, as well as the reuse of waste materials as inputs, either in its own cycle, or in other production cycles, including through reverse logistics systems and selective collection, extending responsibility \"cradle to cradle\" and flirting with a circular economic model. In order to discourage the planned obsolescence strategy, the relevant information about the lifetime of each durable product, especially of electronics, should be comprehensive and mandatorily provided by the production chain, so that consumers, once informed and enlightened about its durability objectively measured, have actual ability to exercise in practice their right and duty at the same time to make consumer choices (or non-consumption), the most sensible way possible, even from the ecological point of view. Procedure for implementation of consumer WEEE take-back systems with a national scope, through preparation of Sector Agreement, is currently in progress in Brazil, including those from mobile industry.
