Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2009 / The City of Cape Town implemented water restrictions from November 2004 and all residents in Cape Town had to rethink their water management practices. In the context of global environmental initiatives, this was a positive move as South Africans need to change the way water is used in line with global environmental practices.
The increasing emphasis for the hospitality industry to “green the business” and implement environmental management practices forms the basis of this research project. The study focused on what water management practices are currently being utilised in selected Cape Town hotels. Initiatives available to assist the hospitality industry in South Africa were also researched to determine what assistance there is for local hoteliers who are implementing water management practices. An objective of the study was the inclusion of recommendations that hoteliers can use as a starting point when implementing water management practices.
The study focused on a study amongst selected three, four and five star graded hotels in the central business district of Cape Town and Waterfront. Quantitative methods were used to generate data relating to the research objectives. A questionnaire was administered to representatives of the sampled 44 hotels to determine current water management practices. Guests within the sample group received a separate questionnaire to determine their perceptions with regard to water management practices in South African hotels. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS).
The findings of the study showed that South African hoteliers are starting to “green the business” and guests to South Africa do view environmental issues as a factor when choosing accommodation.

Geogenic fluoride source in groundwater: A case study of Siloam Village, Limpopo Province, South AfricaOnipe, Tobiloba A. 21 September 2018 (has links)
MESHWR / Department of Hydrology and Water Resources / Siloam, a village in the Northern province of South Africa has groundwater reportedly characterised by concentration of fluoride greater than 1.5 mg/L permissible limit. Regional investigation has been done to determine the possible fluoride sources in the northern province of South Africa, but no localised investigation has been documented. The World Health Organization and South Africa National Standard permissible limit is 1.5 mg/L for a duration of time. Therefore, this study focuses on investigating the sources of fluoride in the groundwater of Siloam village in response to reported high incidences (80%) of dental fluorosis in Siloam village. This study also elaborates more on the hydrochemical and geochemical processes favouring the release of fluoride into the groundwater of Siloam village. Two (2) surface rocks, one (1) surface clay deposit, twelve (12) borehole cuttings and four (4) groundwater samples were used for this study. Temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), conductivity (EC) and pH of the groundwater were determined using a combined multimeter because these parameters are proxy indicators of geogenic influence on groundwater fluoride concentration. Total fluoride in the groundwater samples and the leachates obtained during a leaching experiment were determined using Ion Chromatograph (IC) and Fluoride Ion Selective Electrode (FISE). X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is the most preferred method for rock analysis by earth scientists because it is faster and does not require ambiguous training on the part of the analyst, therefore, it is mostly the standard methods used in whole rock chemistry. Elemental composition and mineralogy were determined using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Clay, greywacke, argillaceous sedmients and basalt were analysed. Results obtained indicated that the groundwater fluoride concentration ranges from 3.92 to 4.95 mg/L, which are far above the WHO permissible limit and South African standard. Insitu temperature reading obtained ranges from 25 to 48°C thus classifying the groundwater to be hot and tepid. The groundwater pH ranges from 8.1 to 9.1 which indicates an alkaline water condition. The groundwater conductivity ranges from 330 to 730 μS/cm while the Total dissolved solids ranges from 130.12 to 423.07 mg/L. Groundwater proxy indicators showed geologic sources to be responsible for the high fluoride concentration in the groundwater of Siloam village. Hydrochemical investigation revealead that the mineralisation of groundwater in Siloam village is as a result of rock water interaction and the process of groundwater enrichment is through base ion exchange and reverse ion exchange. The dominant water type in the village was identified to be Na-Cl water type and the abundance of sodium (Na) is due to the heavy weathering of plagioclase of the parent rocks. Total fluoride content of the rocks and soils of the village ranges from 10 to 2000 mg/L. The leachable fluoride, however, ranged in concentration from 0.27 to 14.88 mg/L under induced temperature

and 0.05 to 10.40 mg/L without temperature. Mineralogical investigation revealed the abundance of smectite clay, which is known for its enrichment and leaching of fluoride into groundwater sources, thus, the research question and assumption about the possible source of fluoride and the assumption that fluoride increases downwards towards the aquifer were answered. Leaching experiments identified the main contributors of fluoride to groundwater in Siloam village as smectite clays and the muscovite present in the sandstone, greywacke and basalt. Hydrogeological characterisation and water supply potential of Lebalelo South, Limpopo Province of South AfricaRambuwani, Rudzani Vincent 08 1900 (has links)
MESHWR / Department of Hydrology and Water Resources / Lebalelo area of Sekhukhune district is one of many areas in South Africa experiencing portable water scarcity, especially during prolonged dry season. Due to the dominance of low yielding aquifers in South Africa, it is essential to manage groundwater resources in these low yielding aquifers. However, the management of low yielding aquifer is difficult in areas like Labelelo where the hydrogeological characteristics of the aquifers are understudied. This study investigated the hydrogeological characteristics of the aquifers in the area using combined geophysical method and analytical groundwater models. Four newly drilled borehole and five existing boreholes were used for this study. Geophysical survey was carried out using magnetic and electromagnetic methods. The magnetic survey was used to locate the position of magnetic bodies such as dolerite dykes and different lithologies with different magnetic properties. The electromagnetic survey however, was used to determine zones of high permeability associated with the intrusive bodies as well as high permeability zones in fault planes. Step test, constant discharge test and recovery tests were conducted on all the boreholes to stress the borehole. This was used to determine a suitable and sustainable pumping rate of the aquifer. Pumping test data from the pumping period and recovery was evaluated and interpreted using AQTESOLVE. Aquifer transmissivity, storativity, internal and external hydraulic boundaries were determined from the data. The transmissivity in the area ranges from 0.08 to 124.7 m2/day. The aquifer types in the area are double porosity aquifer, radial flow aquifer with single porosity. Inductive Coupled Plasma (ICP-MS) was used to measure heavy metals, trace metals and cations while Ion Chromatography (IC) was used to determine anions in groundwater of the study area. The groundwater in the area is dominated by calcium carbonate as a result of long residence time with dolomite. The hydrochemistry of the water indicates that the chemistry of the groundwater in the area is mainly controlled by rock-water interaction. / NRF

The Water Trading Entity (WTE) is a subdivision of the Department of Water and Sanitation responsible for water infrastructure and resource management. Despite ABC implementation at the WTE, the water resource management charge remains high, raising concern. This study aimed to establish what influence ABC implementation has on this charge. Through semi-structured interviews, the study found that the steps and factors generally associated with successful ABC implementation are partially followed, but undefined duplicated activities exist, due to insufficient training and limited technology. The study found that ABC implementation has minimal influence on the increase of the charge. When deciding on the charge, factors such as capping play a role, therefore limiting ABC use. Further research on ABC implementation in government departments can be conducted to ascertain how they can adhere to policies without compromising the use of ABC and identify the skills and training needs for an effective ABC implementation / Management Accounting / M.A. (Accounting Sciences)

electronic content management (ECM), or managed without the benefit of either system.
In many countries, public and private organisations have implemented ECM systems, some
have implemented ERP systems and others generate digital records without the benefit of
any controlled system. In most organisations such systems are not integrated resulting in
duplication and fragmentation of records. The South African Water Utility company, Rand
Water, has implemented both ERP and ECM systems. Investing in these systems as an
organisation comes at a cost but it can add value when used optimally to improve the
organisation’s productivity and efficiency. To achieve high productivity and efficiency,
integration of an ERP system into an ECM system is a requirement but remains lacking.
This qualitative study utilised the Actor Network Theory to explore the integration of ERP
into ECM at the South African Water Utility company, Rand Water, with a view to
developing a framework for integration of the systems. The study utilised a system analysis
case design with fourteen interviews conducted at different levels in the organisation and
diverse business units using ERP and ECM to perform their operational deliverables in line
with the organisation’s business objectives. The interviews were augmented with data from
document analysis of policies, specifications and functionalities of the systems to
determine the feasibility of integration. The study established that the water utility
company has implemented ERP systems (SAP) since 1994 and ECM system since 1991
(Papertrail and later IBM FileNet) with only information flow module integrated. The study
suggested that to integrate ERP into ECM, human and non-human actors need to
collaborate to ensure that the actor network being integrated is achieved. The study also
presents a strategy discussion for integrating ERP into ECM. A further study on the transfer

The implementation of the water release module of the WAS program at the Vaalharts Water Users' AssociationJansen van Vuuren, Arno January 2008 (has links)

International projections indicate that water shortages will be prevalent among poorer countries where resources are limited and population growth is rapid, such as the Middle East, parts of Asia and Africa. Provisional estimates are that South Africa will run out of surplus usable water by 2025, or soon thereafter. Urban and peri-urban areas will therefore require new infrastructure and inter-basin transfers to provide safe water and adequate sanitation. Due to the high cost of these developments, such water is seen as being used for industrial and public needs only and not for irrigation. Currently, the agricultural water users consume the majority of the water used by humans. Taking cognisance of the before mentioned it is a reality that in the future the irrigation sector will have to sacrifice some of its water for public and industrial usage. This suggests growing conflict between the different water users and the agricultural water users. An attempt by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) to address this conflict has been the implementation of pilot studies to determine the steps
Water User Associations (WUAs) could take to ensure more effective water use in the future by the agricultural sector. These steps include an increase in irrigation efficiency according to the benchmarks of crop irrigation requirements and more efficient dam and canal management. The Water Administration System (WAS) has been developed to fulfill this exact requirement as it ensures optimal delivery of irrigation water on demand. The program is designed as a management tool for irrigation schemes, WUAs and water management offices to manage their accounts, and also to manage water supply to clients more efficiently through canal networks, pipelines and rivers. The WAS program consists of four modules that are integrated into a single program. Three modules of the WAS program have already been implemented at the Vaalharts irrigation scheme. This scheme has been transformed from a government controlled scheme to a privately owned scheme, and is now known as the Vaalharts Water User’s Association (VHWUA). The main purpose of this study was to implement the fourth module of the WAS program at the VHWUA as only full functionality of the complete program will ensure effective water use at the scheme.
The fourth module calculates the volume of water to be released for all the canals (main canal and all its branches), allowing for lag times, water losses and accruals in order to minimise waste and thus save water. The methodology followed in this study was to first of all develop an understanding of the distribution cycle and the current calculation procedure of the VHWUA. The fourth module was then applied on a typical feeder canal and used to calculate the release volumes in order to compare these results with the current values. The next step was then to verify all data abstracted from the database used by the WAS program to calculate the release volumes. The database consists of information like cross-sectional properties, positioning of the sluices, canal slope, as well as canal capacities. The verification of data was done by field work, by studying existing engineering design drawings, through meetings and consultations with all parties involved in the VHWUA as well as by mathematical calculations. Cross-checking and verification, if necessary, of all above mentioned data were done. After the verification process, the database was updated and another cycle of calculations were run to do the final calibrations. Accurate calibrations were done to the seepage and the lag time coefficient. Some final adjustments were also made to the canal geometry in the database. This was an important part of the study as only a trusted and verified database will deliver correct results, irrespective of the software program used.
After calibration of the database, the fourth module was again applied, but this time water losses were included in the calculations and the results revealed trustworthy and accurate real-time release volumes. The study therefore succeeded in the implementation of the fourth module on a typical feeder canal at the VHWUA. The study was concluded by the compilation of a checklist, which the VHWUA can use to implement the module on the whole scheme. This would enable the VHWUA to implement and apply the complete WAS program, which offers all the benefits and answers in every need of any water management office. Sustainable water resource utilisation can only be achieved through proper management. Applying this most effective management program will ensure a cost effective and optimised process at the VHWUA.

Towards sustainable development : a participatory model for the water services sector in South AfricaNtsime, Patrick Thipe 09 1900 (has links)
This study is non-empirical and its design is based on three forms of analysis:
conceptualisation, theoretical justification and strategic considerations for a participatory
model in the water services sector in South Africa. In terms of the conceptualisation, the
study addresses the old and new paradigms of sustainable development. First, it argues that
for many years the concept of sustainable development has long dominated the development
discourse. Second, the theoretical justification traces the evolution and meanings of
sustainable development and also patterns and trends of the legacies of colonialism and
apartheid. The descriptive analysis of apartheid and colonialism suggests a new development
path for inclusive people-centred development. The study therefore postulates that in the
South African context, sustainable development is both a political and a historical construct.
This is the basis within which sustainable development should be understood.
Third, the study concludes that context plays an important part in understanding and
challenging the immoral and unjust practices of colonialism and apartheid which have
militated against sustainable human development. The study further provides a description of
the local government and water sectors and their underpinned legislative and policy
framework, and notes impressive results in the delivery of basic water supply since 1994.
However, the study argues that in order for municipalities to fulfil their constitutional
responsibilities as water services authorities, they need to adopt a participatory model
towards sustainable development since this is currently lacking. In doing so, the water
services sector needs to overcome dangers of parochialism which were more evident from the
supply-driven policy of the government. The study therefore draws lessons from three Latin
American countries: Chile, Bolivia and Nicaragua, and proposes a new developmental path
which conforms to the principles of sustainability. This development path is represented in
the form of a dynamic, diagrammatic model for participatory sustainable development. This
model displays successive stages and cycles of transaction between stakeholders. The model
represents a decision support system which provides a conceptual framework for the
diagnosis, consolidation and analysis of information. The model is thus a useful tool which

Water resource management for subsistence farming in Ward 19 of KwaZulu-NatalBakre, Olayemi Rahman January 2015 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Technology: Governance and Economic Development, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa. 2015. / South African rural areas are amongst the poorest in the world, as there is still a wide gap in terms of development with their urban neighbours. With an estimated 6.4 million South Africans falling below the national poverty line in 2010, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) remains the province with the highest number of poor people. The majority of rural dwellers in South Africa and KZN rely on subsistence farming, while others depend on government grants or family members living and working in urban areas to sustain a living. However, the income received is often insufficient to cater for their daily needs. In consonance with the high prevalence of poverty and the stagnation of subsistence farming, this study aims to examine the role of water supply in rural agricultural development in the Ward 19 area of Mtubatuba Municipality, which is situated along the north eastern region of KZN. To accomplish this aim, a mixed research approach with elements of qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (questionnaire) research techniques was used to obtain relevant information. A total of 50 participants took part in this study, all of whom were subsistence farmers in Ward 19 of Mtubatuba Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with three senior officials from the regional office of the Department of Water Affairs in Durban; three staff members from the Mtubatuba Municipality; two individuals from Ward 19; two senior staff members from the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development in Mtubatuba; as well as two senior staff members from Umkanyakude water services provider in Mtubatuba.
The study revealed that water shortages have adversely undermined the development and growth of subsistence farming in this poor community. Furthermore, the difficulties experienced by the marginalised people of Ward 19 are typical of many rural areas which have not fully benefitted from transformation in a post-apartheid South Africa. In order to address the defunct subsistence iii
farming in this community, the study proposed a well-tailored and effective water resource management approach with the intention of transforming subsistence farming into commercial farming, thus improving the standard of living and reducing poverty to a reasonable level. Furthermore, in recognition that the area under study is dominated by women, the study emphasised the imperativeness of empowering the women of the community as a strategy underpinning rural development.

Water sustainability : measurement, management, engagement, and disclosure of selected water-intensive companies on the Johannesburg Stock ExchangeAskham, Theresa 01 1900 (has links)
Many parts of the world, but South Africa specifically, are facing a water crisis, not only because of the scarcity of water, but also the quality of the water that is available. Companies are the primary users of water and can therefore have the most significant impact on saving water. It is thus imperative to determine how companies are measuring, managing, engaging with their stakeholders and disclosing water-related risks in their businesses. This study was conducted on the premise that South African companies have not as yet grasped the seriousness of the water crisis. Thirty JSE-listed companies classified as being water intensive were selected for the study. Their sustainability/integrated/annual reports for 2011 and 2013 were downloaded from the internet and analysed to determine if and how they were mitigating their water-related risks. The Ceres Aqua Gauge™ was used as the framework for this study. It was established during the analysis of the selected companies’ reports that, with the exception of food producers and food retailers, the companies had grasped the seriousness of the water crisis. One area of particular concern that was evident in all the companies was the lack of attention directed towards supply chain water management. Companies need to address water risks in their supply chain, and to also turn the water crisis from a threat into an opportunity. Training needs for municipal employees: a case study of Makana MunicipalityHamaamba, Tyson January 2005 (has links)
This study investigated the education and training needs for municipal employees in order to inform an education and training strategy that would address environmental management challenges in Makana local municipality in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape province. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study that made use of questionnaires, document analysis, focus group discussions and interviews as instruments for data generation. Samples of respondents were selected from Makana Municipality employees in top and middle management positions, professionals/technicians and workers, including elected councillors. The study was contextualised through establishing environmental management issues in Makana municipality; establishing organisational needs; development of a learner profile; and through a review of policies and recent trends in adult education. The study established that the Makana Municipality employees are most concerned with the following issues: sanitation; solid waste management; livestock management and fire management. These issues require primary environmental competences among all council employees (top and middle management, professionals and technicians, workers and councillors who work on part-time basis). The educational implications needed to respond to these issues also require an understanding of legislation. The study also established that technical education and training which includes planning, project management, and financial and budgeting competences are necessary amongst the management and professionals. These competences may enable them to develop capacity in environmental management. This study further established the need for social education which includes competences such as communication and social justice. These competences should be developed amongst members of the same group as they need to involve the community in management of the environment. This should enable the municipality to create job opportunities and help change negative attitudes.
