Life Cycle Assessment of Residential Windows: Analyzing the Environmental Impact of Window Restoration versus Window Replacement

Switala-Elmhurst, Katherine January 2014 (has links)
New windows are rated based on their energy performance during the use phase. This rating neglects the overall environmental impact caused by raw material extraction, manufacturing, maintenance and disposal. Due to the number of residential window replacements occurring today in the United States, there is a growing need to quantify the sustainability of window preservation as an alternative to window replacement. This study assessed the environmental impact of historic wood window restoration versus window replacement for the entire "cradle to grave" life cycle of the window assembly. This study focused on a typical, mid-twentieth century housing development in the Northeast United States using four window configurations as follows: 1. Restored original wood window with a new exterior aluminum storm window; 2. PVC replacement window; 3. Aluminum-clad wood replacement window; 4. Wood replacement window. The dissertation assessed the life cycle of window configurations using GaBi Software. The life cycle inventories were analyzed using the TRACI 2.1 impact method which translated the environmental consequences of the life cycle assessment processes into quantifiable environmental impacts. The dissertation also considered window thermal performance and life cycle costs. When considering life cycle environmental impacts, thermal performance, energy savings and material costs, the results indicated that wood window restoration was the best option when compared to replacement windows considered in this study; however, the results indicated that building service life and window service life assumptions could impact results. Thermal performance testing of windows revealed that window restoration techniques undertaken in this study improved the window's overall thermal performance. The testing also indicated that the effects of air infiltration had minimal influence on the performance of the restored window assembly when compared to a high performance replacement window. The results of the energy model exhibited only a small annual energy savings between the restored window assembly and a high performance replacement window. The payback cost analysis revealed that, while there was an immediate financial benefit of window replacement with the PVC option, window replacement frequency and overall life cycle environmental impacts would favor the restored window option. / Civil Engineering

Investigations in the Development of a Windows Based Expert System for Preoperative Assessments / Expert System for Preoperative Assessments

Archer, Delbert 08 1900 (has links)
The Preop medical expert system (Langton et. al, 1990) was originally developed using the expert system tool, Nexpert Object, on a VAX computer. Nexpert Object creates an expert system specification which is executed by an interpreter within Nexpert Object. The original implementation, however, has several limitations, including: 1. lack of physical portability 2. requires Nexpert Object to run 3. crude user interface. In order to overcome the first limitation, Preop is implemented on a PC DOS portable computer. This project is addresses the other two limitations. Creating a compiled version of Preop eliminates the need for the Nexpert Object interpreter, and implementing it as a Microsoft Windows application provides a better user interface. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Optical Characterization and Energy Simulation of Glazing for High-Performance Windows / Optisk karakterisering och energisimulering av smarta fönster

Jonsson, Andreas January 2009 (has links)
This thesis focuses on one important component of the energy system - the window. Windows are installed in buildings mainly to create visual contact with the surroundings and to let in daylight, and should also be heat and sound insulating. This thesis covers four important aspects of windows: antireflection and switchable coatings, energy simulations and optical measurements. Energy simulations have been used to compare different windows and also to estimate the performance of smart or switchable windows, whose transmittance can be regulated. The results from this thesis show the potential of the emerging technology of smart windows, not only from a daylight and an energy perspective, but also for comfort and well-being. The importance of a well functioning control system for such windows, is pointed out. To fulfill all requirements of modern windows, they often have two or more panes. Each glass surface leads to reflection of light and therefore less daylight is transmitted. It is therefore of interest to find ways to increase the transmittance. In this thesis antireflection coatings, similar to those found on eye-glasses and LCD screens, have been investigated. For large area applications such as windows, it is necessary to use techniques which can easily be adapted to large scale manufacturing at low cost. Such a technique is dip-coating in a sol-gel of porous silica. Antireflection coatings have been deposited on glass and plastic materials to study both visual and energy performance and it has been shown that antireflection coatings increase the transmittance of windows without negatively affecting the thermal insulation and the energy efficiency. Optical measurements are important for quantifying product properties for comparisons and evaluations. It is important that new measurement routines are simple and applicable to standard commercial instruments. Different systematic error sources for optical measurements of patterned light diffusing samples using spectrophotometers with integrating spheres have been investigated and some suggestions are made for how to avoid such errors.

Nástroje pro podporu vývoje nativních multiplatformních mobilních aplikací / Tools for support of cross-platform native mobile apps development

Bulvas, Vít January 2015 (has links)
This master thesiss goal is to map available tools for support of cross-platform native mobile app development. Main goal of thesis is to choose such tool and present it in form of app development. To accomplish this goal several criteria with different importance have to be defined. These criteria are used for choosing of most suitable tool. This thesis has two outputs. First one are criteria that can be used again or amended for some similar tool rating, like this one. Second output is cross-platform mobile app developed with Xamarin tool. Structure of this thesis copy secondary goals that support main goal: mobile OS are presented, name cross-platform native app is defined, define criteria, describe selected tools, rate them and demonstrate development of simple app on selected tool.

PXI Communication in a virtual environment : Using containers and VMs for communication with a PXI / PXI Kommunication i en virtuel miljö : Använding av containers och VMs för kommunikation med PXI

Dahlberg, Carl January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates the possibility of communication with a PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI) system from inside of a container or a virtual machine (VM). While the usage of virtual environments with PCI have been established, it was unknown whether it is possible to have an application running inside of a virtual environment and have it communicate with a PXI system outside this environment. Should it be possible to have communication with a PXI system from inside of a virtual environment, this would make it possible to have a virtual environment prepared with all the necessary software for the PXI and this virtual environment could be transferred and installed into other computers without the need to change any of the software. The investigation was done by creating several different test environments to better understand how both the PXI drivers and the virtual environment work and to see how they interact with each other. While it turned out not to be possible to realize such a virtual environment using the equipment described in this thesis, it was learned that it was theoretically possible to make use of VM for communication with a PXI system, although doing this in practice is dependant on the specific PXI modules involved.
