Cognitive radio for coexistence of heterogeneous wireless networks / Radio cognitive pour la coexistence de réseaux radio hétérogènes

Dans un scénario avec plusieurs réseaux sans fil de différentes technologies, ce travail a comme objectif la conception d'un moteur cognitif capable de reconnaitre l'environnement radio et de sélectionner un réseau avec le but final de maximiser la "qualité d'expérience" (QoE) de l'utilisateur. Un accent particulier est mis sur la simplicité de tous les éléments impliqués, du hardware aux algorithmes, afin de garder la faisabilité pratique de ce dispositif.Deux aspects ont été étudiés. Pour la reconnaissance de l'environnement radio une identification de réseau et une classification automatique sur la base de caractéristiques de la couche MAC a été proposée et testée. En ce qui concerne la sélection du réseau, des "Key Performance Indicators" (KPIs), qui sont des paramètres de la couche application, ont étés pris en compte afin d'obtenir la QoE désirée. Un modèle général pour la sélection du réseau a été proposé et testé avec de différents types de trafic par des simulations et par la réalisation d'un démonstrateur (application pour Android). De plus, comme il y a le problème de quand mesurer pour estimer la performance d'un réseau et quand l'utiliser effectivement pour transmettre et recevoir, le problème du bandit manchot ("Multi-armed bandit", MAB) a été appliqué à ce contexte et un nouveau modèle de MAB a été proposé afin de mieux répondre aux cas réels considérés. L'impact du nouveau modèle, qui introduit la distinction de deux actions différentes, mesurer et utiliser, a été testé par des simulations en utilisant des algorithmes déjà disponibles dans la littérature et deux algorithmes conçus spécifiquement. / In a scenario where multiple wireless networks of different technologies are available, this work addresses the problem of the design of a cognitive engine, core of a cognitive radio device, able to perform the surrounding radio environment recognition and the network selection with the final goal of maximization of final user Quality of Experience (QoE). Particular focus is put on the requirement of simplicity of all the elements involved, from hardware to algorithms, in order to keep in mind the importance of its practical realizability.Two aspects were investigated. For the surrounding radio environment recognition step, a network identification and automatic classification method based on MAC layer features was proposed and tested. As regards the network selection, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), i.e. application layer parameters, were considered in order to obtain the desired goal of QoE. A general model for network selection was proposed and tested for different traffic types, both with simulations and a practical realization of a demonstrator (implemented as an application for Android OS). Moreover, as a consequence of the originated problem of when measuring to estimate a network performance and when effectively using the network for data transmission and reception purposes, the multi-armed bandit problem (MAB) was applied to this context and a new MAB model was proposed, in order to better fit the considered real cases scenarios. The impact of the new model, that introduces the distinction of two different actions, to measure and to use, was tested through simulations using algorithms already available in literature and two specifically designed algorithms.

A interferência espectral gera patologias nos sistemas de comunicação sem fio (wireless), como por exemplo, quedas na comunicação e degradação na vazão. O espectro de RF (rádio frequência) é fiscalizado e controlado por órgãos governamentais, no entanto as redes sem fio padrão IEEE 802.11, conhecidas por WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks), trabalham em faixas espectrais não licenciadas, conhecidas por ISM. Estas redes estão cada vez mais presentes nos ambientes comerciais e residenciais, contribuindo para questões de ubiquidade e acesso à Internet. Com este aumento expressivo, a cobertura espectral está cada vez mais densa. A densidade elevada de sinais aponta para a saturação do espectro ISM, causando interferências mútuas das redes IEEE 802.11. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a cobertura do espectro, por redes WLANs, e avaliar quedas de vazão ocasionadas por interferências espectrais, variando no espaço e no tempo. Dois cenários foram mapeados para analisar as degradações, um com baixa a média e outro com alta densidade e complexidade. O objetivo da criação desses cenários foi comparar as degradações causadas pelas interferências em ambientes diferentes, na ocupação, na utilização e na propagação de sinais de redes WLANs. Através dos resultados obtidos, um ciclo de vida de gerenciamento do espectro de redes padrão 802.11 foi proposto. Este ciclo contribui para avaliar e classificar o estado de uma rede em densa, não densa, complexa e não complexa, visto que alterações de ocupação do espectro no espaço e no tempo são plausíveis de ocorrerem. Conclui-se que os impactos da sobreposição total do canal, por fontes 802.11, não são suficientes para a substancial degradação da vazão em ambientes de baixa a média complexidade. Em ambientes com alta densidade e complexidade as degradações são mais evidentes, principalmente quando ocorrem perturbações vindas de duas fontes adjacentes / The spectral interference generates pathologies in wireless communication systems (wireless), such as declines in communication and degradation in flow. The spectrum of RF (radio frequency) is supervised and controlled by government agencies, however the wireless standard IEEE 802.11, known as WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks), work in unlicensed spectrum bands, known as ISM. These networks are increasingly involved in commercial and residential environments, contributing to issues and ubiquity of Internet access. With the significant increase in these networks, the spectral coverage is increasingly dense. The high density of signals pointing to the saturation of the ISM spectrum, causing mutual interference of IEEE 802.11 networks. The aim of this study is to analyze the coverage of the spectrum, for WLANs, and evaluate the flow falls caused by spectral interferences, varying in space and time. Two scenarios were mapped to examine the degradations, with a low to medium and one with high density and complexity. The purpose of creating these scenarios was to compare the degradation caused by interference in different environments, occupation, use and spread of signals WLANs. Through the results, a life cycle management of the spectrum of standard 802.11 networks was proposed. This cycle helps to evaluate and classify the state of a dense network, not dense, complex and not complex, since changes in occupation of the spectrum - in space and time - are plausible to occur. It is concluded that the impacts of the complete overlap of the channel, sources 802.11, are not sufficient to the substantial degradation of the flow in low to medium complexity. In environments with high density and complexity of the degradation is more evident, especially when there are disturbances coming from two adjacent sources

SLA-Aware Adaptive Data Broadcasting in Wireless Environments

In mobile and wireless networks, data broadcasting for popular data items enables the efficient utilization of the limited wireless bandwidth. However, efficient data scheduling schemes are needed to fully exploit the benefits of data broadcasting. Towards this goal, several broadcast scheduling policies have been proposed. These existing schemes have mostly focused on either minimizing response time, or drop rate, when requests are associated with hard deadlines. The inherent inaccuracy of hard deadlines in a dynamic mobile environment motivated us to use Service Level Agreements (SLAs) where a user specifies the utility of data as a function of its arrival time. Moreover, SLAs provide the mobile user with an already familiar quality of service specification from wired environments. Hence, in this dissertation, we propose SAAB, an SLA-aware adaptive data broadcast scheduling policy for maximizing the system utility under SLA-based performance measures. To achieve this goal, SAAB considers both the characteristics of disseminated data objects as well as the SLAs associated with them. Additionally, SAAB automatically adjusts to the system workload conditions which enables it to constantly outperform existing broadcast scheduling policies.

Some Investigations on QoS in the Wireline-Wireless Network Interface Zone

In the next generation of networks we will begin to see the true convergence of voice, multimedia, and data traffic. This merging of various dedicated networks will occur both in the wired and wireless domains. Given the growth in the areas of wireless voice and data, we see that the combination of mobile and Internet communication constitutes the driving force behind the third-generation wireless system and makes the basis for the fourth-generation wireless system. For services like voice over IP over wireless (VoIPoW), the main challenge is to achieve QoS and spectrum efficiency. In order to support better QoS the IETF Mobile IP Working Group is discussing a number of enhancements to the base protocol to reduce the latency, packet loss and signaling overhead experienced during handoff. This support also includes both the call admission and the subsequent scheduling of packet transmissions. In this thesis, we will first survey the work done on issues related to QoS provisioning for wireless network and then will address bandwidth allocation problem in packet radio network with special emphasis on wireline to wireless internetworking zone. The main aim of the thesis is to evolve a strategy to reduce the call dropping probability by negotiating the QoS in those conditions when we do not have the sufficient resources (mainly bandwidth) to allocate. In order to achieve the QoS we have investigated the behaviour of the Real-time Voice traffic on a wireless link and its relation to the associated quality of service. This investigation opens a way for QoS negotiation, in a condition like during handoff, when the network is not able to sustain the negotiated bandwidth. The main results of this work are, that even with reduced bandwidth, quality for speech can be maintained at a reasonable level and this way the call dropping can be reduced. Such a scheme is useful in those conditions when we do not have the sufficient bandwidth to allocate like during a handoff of a mobile host from one cell to another. Moreover the bandwidth is a scarce resource in wireless domain so there should be an efficient call admission control policy. Many call admission control policies are proposed in the literature; here we propose a simple scheme for real-time traffic, specially speech, in a base station which increases the system throughput. In addition to above, we have also experimented with Cellular IP, one of the implementations of proposed micro-mobility architecture to provide faster handoff and seamless mobility in wired and wireless network.

Linear Network Coding For Wireline And Wireless Networks

Network Coding is a technique which looks beyond traditional store-and-forward approach followed by routers and switches in communication networks, and as an extension introduces maps termed as ‘local encoding kernels’ and ‘global encoding kernels’ defined for each communication link in the network. The purpose of both these maps is to define rules as to how to combine the packets input on the node to form a packet going out on an edge. The paradigm of network coding was formally and for the first time introduced by Ahlswede et al. in [1], where they also demonstrated its use in case of single-source multiple-sink network multicast, although with use of much complex mathematical apparatus. In [1], examples of networks are also presented where it is shown that network coding can improve the overall throughput of the network which can not otherwise be realized by the conventional store-and-forward approach. The main result in [1], i.e. the capacity of single-source multiple-sinks information network is nothing but the minimum of the max-flows from source to each sink, was again proved by Li, Yeung, and Cai in [2] where they showed that only linear operations suffice to achieve the capacity of multicast network. The authors in [2] defined generalizations to the multicast problem, which they termed as linear broadcast, linear dispersion, and Generic LCM as strict generalizations of linear multicast, and showed how to build linear network codes for each of these cases. For the case of linear multicast, Koetter and Medard in [3] developed an algebraic framework using tools from algebraic geometry which also proved the multicast max-flow min-cut theorem proved in [1] and [2]. It was shown that if the size of the finite field is bigger than a certain threshold, then there always exists a solution to the linear multicast, provided it is solvable. In other words, a solvable linear multicast always has a solution in any finite field whose cardinality is greater than the threshold value. The framework in [3] also dealt with the general linear network coding problem involving multiple sources and multiple sinks with non-uniform demand functions at the sinks, but did not touched upon the key problem of finding the characteristic(s) of the field in which it may have solution. It was noted in [5] that a solvable network may not have a linear solution at all, and then introduced the notion of general linear network coding, where the authors conjectured that every solvable network must have a general linear solution. This was refuted by Dougherty, Freiling, Zeger in [6], where the authors explicitly constructed example of a solvable network which has no general linear solution, and also networks which have solution in a finite field of char 2, and not in any other finite field. But an algorithm to find the characteristic of the field in which a scalar or general linear solution(if at all) exists did not find any mention in [3] or [6]. It was a simultaneous discovery by us(as part of this thesis) as well as by Dougherty, Freiling, Zeger in [7] to determine the characteristics algorithmically. Applications of Network Coding techniques to wireless networks are seen in literature( [8], [9], [10]), where [8] provided a variant of max-flow min-cut theorem for wireless networks in the form of linear programming constraints. A new architecture termed as COPE was introduced in [10] which used opportunistic listening and opportunistic coding in wireless mesh networks.

Characterizing and mitigating communication challenges in wireless and mobile networks

Wireless and Mobile (WAM) networks have been evolving and extending their reach to more aspects of human activity for years. As such, networks have been deployed in wider and broader physical range and circumstances, so that end-to-end contemporaneous connectivity is no longer guaranteed. To address this connectivity challenge, recent research work on Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) paradigm uses intermediate nodes to store data while waiting for transfer opportunities towards the destination. However, this work differs from conventional research work in WAM, e.g., Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) routing, since the connectivity assumptions are so different. In this thesis, we present the WAM Continuum framework which aims to provide a unified treatment of wireless and mobile networks. The framework is based on the construction of a WAM continuum that defines the space of networks and a corresponding formalism by which one can group related WAMs into classes that map into design and operational regimes. We show a specific instantiation of this framework that classifies networks according to their path properties and apply it to networks described by traces from both real platforms and synthesized mobility models. Effect of introducing controllable node mobility, e.g., message ferrying, is quantitatively evaluated in our study. We extend this framework in a manner that enables the classification of a WAM's energy "sufficiency" depending on a combination of the network connectivity properties, available energy, and power management scheme. As another extension under the same WAM continuum framework, this thesis studies the interaction of mobile computation collaboration and underlying network connectivity characteristics. Classification results from our framework indicate that heterogeneous connectivity may exist in WAM networks. In such cases, protocols from different routing paradigms need to work together to provide effective data communication. We focus on integration of MANET routing and message ferrying in clustered DTNs. A hybrid routing approach is developed in which both MANET routing and message ferrying are used to explore available connectivity in clusters via gateway nodes. Different data aggregation as well as transmission scheduling algorithms are proposed. To achieve better performance, we also study the ferry route design problem in the clustered DTNs and develop three route design algorithms. This thesis work also includes our experience to address challenges associated with new data communication requirements in oil field operations at remote areas. Backed up by a comprehensive measurement study of long range data links provided by satellite and cellular services, we develop a WAM network where multiple data links are jointly used to achieve an effective data communication solution in the challenged environment.

An underwater safety-critical mobile communication system

Recreational scuba diving is a highly social activity where divers are encouraged to work in groups of two or more people. Though collaborative, divers are unable to freely and naturally communicate. Additionally, the distortion of sensory information (e.g. distances and sounds cannot be judged as accurately underwater) affects the ability to keep track of critical information which impairs their ability to engage in this underwater world. We have studied and designed a fault tolerant system, including the software, the device, and the network, to foster underwater communication. We studied the technology required, the software design for both single user and multiple users, as well as, the network design in order to support such a system. In the thesis, we have set up and analyzed the result of three user studies and a simulation to investigate the viability of the proposed design.

Design of an ad hoc wireless network for wildlife telemetry tracking in the Cederberg

The CLT needed a network to transfer GPS data and single frame photos from remote locations in the Cederberg to a researcher's base station. The proposed solution is an ad hoc wireless network, where nodes perform polling of leopard collars and send information via the multi-hop network to the researcher's base once it is downloaded from a collar. The literature study involved medium access control - and routing protocols for e ectively transferring information. The solution was implemented in hardware and range tests were done in the Cederberg to determine feasible locations for nodes in this network for covering most of the CLT study area. Link budgets for this area was determined with Radio Mobile to compare with actual ranges as measured. The simulation of protocols was done in OMNET++ which could be compared with actual results from the physical network. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis handel oor navorsing wat gedoen is vir die Kaapse Luipaard Trust (CLT) vir die opsporing van luipaarde. Die CLT het 'n netwerk nodig gehad wat GPS data en enkel raam fotos van afgeleë gebiede in die Cederberge na 'n navorser se basis stuur. Die voorgestelde oplossing is 'n ad hoc draadlose netwerk, waar nodisse luipaard nekbande oproep om data af te laai en dan te stuur deur die multi-hop netwerk na die navorser se basis. Die literatuurstudie handel oor medium toegangs beheer - en roete verkryging protokolle vir die effektiewe oordrag van informasie. Die oplossing is in hardeware geïmplimenteer en radio-afstand-toetse is gedoen in die Cederberge om goedgeleë posisies vir nodisse te bepaal om die grootste gedeelte van die CLT studie area te dek. Radio Mobile is gebruik om voorspellings te maak rakende die afstande verkrygbaar tussen radios om te vergelyk met die fisiese metings in die veld. Die simulasie van protokolle is gedoen in OMNET++ en vergelyk met prestasie metings op die fisiese netwerk.

Nesse contexto, estratégias para controlar o nível de tensão e o fator de potência vêm sendo tratadas, com o objetivo de aprimorar o controle dessas variáveis. Este trabalho apresenta uma estratégia de controle integrado de regulação de tensão e do fator de potência para um sistema de distribuição de energia elétrica usando uma rede de comunicação sem fio. A estratégia de controle proposta consiste em uma rede de comunicação entre os dispositivos designados para operarem reguladores de tensão, transformadores com comutadores sob carga e banco de capacitores, concentrando as informações em um único dispositivo capaz de definir a operação dos demais dispositivos alocados no sistema, sendo a concentração das informações feita localmente, sem a necessidade de um sistema de controle centralizado, permitindo uma simplificação e uma redução significativa de custo para implementação de uma solução de controle integrado de tensão e do fator de potência. A estratégia de controle proposta foi modelada no ambiente Matlab®/Simulink® e a rede de comunicação na ferramenta TrueTime. O estudo apresenta uma comparação entre a estratégia proposta e o método de controle tradicional, abordando aspectos relacionados a qualidade de energia elétrica entregue, demanda de energia em horários de alto consumo e perdas elétricas no sistema simulado. Os resultados mostram que a estratégia de controle local integrado de tensão e fator de potência permite a aplicação de banco de capacitores a jusante de reguladores de tensão sem impactar a qualidade de energia elétrica, ainda permite a técnica de redução de tensão com o intuito de reduzir a demanda de energia principalmente em horários de pico de consumo. E por fim apresenta uma redução de perdas elétricas de quase 4%, comparado com a estratégia de controle tradicional. / The issue about power quality, its rational use, and techniques to reduce electrical losses in the distribution systems is not anymore a trend but a necessity, due to, a understanding that the electricity is a common good, then, should not be wasted. Based on this context, strategies have been studying to control the voltage and power factor with the objective to improve the control of this variables. This work presents an integrated control for voltage and power factor strategy to distribution systems using a wireless network. The purposed strategy allows a communication between the devices designed to operate voltage regulators, on load transformers tap changers, and capacitors bank, concentrating all information in only one device, which is able to define the operation of others, being the concentration information made locally, without a necessity of the a centralize system, simplifying and reducing costs related the implementation of an integrated control for voltage and power factor. The strategy presented was modeled in the Matlab®/Simulink® and the communication network using the TrueTime toolbox. The study presents a comparison between the traditional strategy and the purposed, analyzing the power quality delivered, power demand in peak time, and electrical losses in the system. The results shows that the integrated control for voltage and power factor strategy allows the use of capacitors bank downstream of voltage regulators without any impact in the power quality supplied, besides that, it is possible to reduce the power demand lowering the voltage using the conservative voltage reduction function, to finish a reducing in electrical losses about 4% is achieved with the strategy purposed when compared with the traditional.
