Gift or poison?: women's experience of the church with reference to certain women in the Eastern Cape.

Groves, Susan Clare 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the experience that women have of the church. Work was done with groups of women in the Eastern Cape to hear their first hand experiences on this subject. A study was also made of the experiences of women as recorded in other parts of Africa and the world. South African women are situated within the broader context of society, thus also matters pertaining to this broader context were examined. The situation facing South African women in society and within the church is complex and difficult. In the final chapter, rather than looking at how women could change external structures, the focus is on women paying attention to themselves. The great importance of women honouring themselves, and giving themselves priority, and that of developing a spiritual practice that is nurturing and relevant to their lives, were suggested as a prerequisite for effective change on a wider level. An emphasis was thus put on the inner world of the woman, where, it is argued, many South African women need to experience a revolution. That women need support in this journey was stressed, with the participation in women's groups seen as being transforming for women. / Systematic Theology / Th. M. (System Theology)

An autoethnographic study of the rise and fall of intimacy : an embedded journey of discovery

Upton-Davis, Karen January 2009 (has links)
The loss of intimacy is a pervasive tale, felt especially poignantly when the particular story, with its plot lines of love and betrayal, soaked as they are in rage and grief, is my own. By inverting the research process, whereby I call upon friends, and strangers who become friends, to assist me in the meaning-making process, this autoethnographic account of the twenty year downward spiral of my now defunct marriage makes tangible the shared project of making sense of intimacy, love and loss. It connects the personal to the social, cultural, and (most especially) the politically gendered nature of heterosexual relationship experience. It speaks of the process that makes it possible for me to tell my story and of the ethical tensions involved in telling a story of

Kvinnors upplevelse av vardagligt liv efter en mastektomi : En litteraturstudie / Women's experience of everyday life after a mastectomy : A literature review

El haj, Aya, Tchuenteu Kom, Elvire Ariane January 2020 (has links)
Background: Cancer is a life-threatening disease that can cause death. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide. The treatment for breast cancer is usually a surgical procedure called mastectomy. It is a procedure where a part of or the whole breast is removed. The surgery can then be supplemented with other treatments to prevent the spread. The breast is a body part that is important for attractiveness, sexuality and femininity. The thought of losing the breast involves a change in the affected woman and can consequently affect the woman's life. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe women's experience of everyday life after a mastectomy. Method: The chosen method was a qualitative literature study, based on eleven scientific articles that were analyzed through a manifest content analysis. Result: The result consists of three main categories The new body, The changed existence and Experience of support, and eight subcategories Changed body image, Changed sexuality, Changed social function and impact on everyday life, Mental illness, Feeling of acceptance and gratitude, Support from the environment and Meeting with healthcare. Conclusion: Women are affected differently after a mastectomy and the experience can vary depending on age. Impacts can be in the form of depression, deteriorating quality of life, changes in body image and sexuality. Therefore, it is crucial for this patient group to have contact with the care because the woman needs support to be able to express feelings postoperatively. Thus, the role of the nurse is to treat patients in a respectful way and provide proper care

Wesström, Maria, Drakenberg, Nike January 2022 (has links)
Resultat: Resultatet delades in i två teman; positiva och negativa bemötanden. Positiva bemötanden delades in i kategorierna empati och fungerande skyddsnät. / Introduction: Violence against women is a public health issue. Intimate partner violence generates acute and long-term health problems. Aim: Investigate women's experience of treatment received from health care professionals after being exposed to intimate partner violence. Method: A literature study with descriptive design using original articles with qualitative studies was used to answer the aim of the study. Result: The result was divided in two themes; positive and negative experiences. Positive experiences were divided into categories empathy and functioning safety net. The feeling of empathy emerged when the encounter was experienced as compassionate, the personnel took their time, was supportive and motivated, performed confirming actions and there was a satisfying professional-patient relation. The feeling of a functional safety net emerged when the encounter was informative, professional, the women obtained practical help and a feeling of trust was experienced. Negative experiences were categorized to negative emotions, discrimination and lack of safety net. Negative emotions occurred when women experienced dysfunctional professional-patient relation and the encounter was derogatory, unempathetic, blaming and the professionals did not understand the women’s situation. Discrimination was experienced when the personnel overlooked the violence or the patient experienced cultural oppression. Lack of safety net was experienced when women felt betrayed by the system, lack of time and information and not receiving a professional encounter. Conclusion: Women exposed to violence experienced treatment from healthcare professionals in different ways. The majority had negative experiences which reveals that further research is needed to identify the gaps in knowledge and to further educate personnel who are active in healthcare.

Is there a woman in the text? : a feminist exploration of Katherine Mansfield's search for authentic selves in a selection of short stories

Cooper, Lucille 30 June 2008 (has links)
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), British Modernist writer whose search for authentic selves in the lives of the characters in her short stories, is reflected in her innovative style of writing in which she examines the interior consciousness of their minds. Mansfield questions the inauthentic lives of the characters, revealing that the roles they play are socially imposed forcing them to hide their true selves behind masks. The stories which have been chosen for this study focus on women characters (and men also) who grapple with societal prescriptions for accepted actions, and are rendered mute as a result. The women characters include all age groups and social classes. Some are young and impressionable (The Tiredness of Rosabel, The Little Governess and The Garden Party), others are married and older (Bliss, Prelude and Frau Brechenmacher attends a wedding ), while there are also middle-aged women in Miss Brill and The Life of Ma Parker. / English Studies / M.A. (English)
