Abstract: This dissertation addresses a constant issue in gender studies: the interlinkages between the productive and reproductive spheres in women's lives. The centrality of the issue reflects the importance of the sexual division of labor as a category of analysis of social reality. The focus on graduate women highlights the fundamental role of education for the expansion of the set of choices women have. This focus also emphasizes the recent changes in terms of gender relations that this group's experience represents. Accordingly, the study highlights the heterogeneity of this group, by comparing the population in different points in time - 1970 and 2000 - and in different age groups in each moment. The source of the data was the IBGE Demographic Census. The labor market variables show a convergence on the nature of male and female insertion in that same market, when comparing graduate women to graduate men over the studied period. On the family realm, there was an outstanding increase in the proportion of women who finish the reproductive cycle having experienced motherhood, despite the the fall of Total Fertility rates over the analyzed period. Considering these two realms concurrently, it is noted that wages are not always negatively related to motherhood. Furthermore, the most fundamental aspect is the moment in time in the mother's life that the child is born. These trends show that motherhood and work have not been experienced as directly opposed fields in life, particularly for younger generations. In a broader perspective, the studied group conduct to the relativization of some general ideas about women behavior in productive and reproductive spheres of social life. Furthermore, this approach allows assessments of the contradictions, ruptures and continuities - common elements to any process of social change - that mark the female and male identities in contemporary societies.

Josilene Lucas da Silva 11 September 2017 (has links)
This thesis studies references to fashion in the short stories The woman in black and Miss Dollar, collected in the compilation \"Contos Fluminenses\" by Machado de Assis. We consider the relationship between this theme and the internal elements of meaning in these stories, the social context in which the stories were produced and the authors role in the 19th century press, particularly his contributions to the female magazine Jornal das Famílias. During the period when The woman in Black and Miss Dollar were published, a new way to educate women according to the new habits of urban life was a topic of debate. Therefore, this work analyzes the new type of education proposed for this group, which included reading and writing and stimulated a taste for reading sentimental narratives. The author used references to fashion and other accessories of personal adornment in the composition of the characters meanwhile he criticized the decorative excess of clothing, the womens education and the aesthetic principles of Romanticism and Realism.

Theological and Practical Ministry Training for Women in Complementarian Higher Education: A Mixed Methods Study

Reed, Linda Marie 02 January 2018 (has links)
This explanatory sequential mixed methods study reviews the programs and academic courses for women at complementarian schools of Christian higher education. The literature review historically unfolds the egalitarian and complementarian debate. Choosing the complementarian path, I advocate theological or practical ministry training for complementarian women, and review other recent research pertinent to this field. The initial quantitative phase utilizes content analysis from catalogs on institutional websites. In a second qualitative phase, twelve purposively selected directors were interviewed at exemplar complementarian schools such as Cedarville University, Covenant Seminary, Dallas Theological Seminary, The Master’s University, Midwestern Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Reformed Seminary, Southern Seminary, Southeastern Seminary, Southwestern Seminary, and Westminster Seminary. The analysis includes quantitative and qualitative data revealing consistency and variation among these institutions in order to provide insight and example for other institutions and educators in Christian higher education.

African women's experience of their multiple role involvement while engaged with ABET

Dube, Mmatlala Helen 06 December 2011 (has links)
M.Ed. / The aim of this research was to explore African women's experience of their multiple role involvement while engaged in Adult Education and Training (ABET) programmes at the ABET centre in the Gauteng Province. I argue that African women in ABET have different experiences of their multiple roles to their Western counterparts, and for this reason, ABET providers should understand the experiences, needs and characteristics of African women in ABET in order to design flexible courses and give effective learner support. The research question that guided the research reported on in this essay is: What are the experiences of African women of their multiple role involvement while engaged in ABET? In the light of the above, qualitative research was conducted using personal interviews for data collection. Eight participants were purposefully selected by maximum variation sampling to represent the widest possible range of experience. They were interviewed in order to arrive at a deeper understanding of these experiences. The data gathered were then analysed and findings written up. The findings of this research indicate that rural African women have to balance the role of learner with that of worker, home maker, wife, mother, and communal worker. In addition, the entrenched system of patriarchy in many African societies denies rural women any form of personal support structure with women often encountering direct opposition to their attempts at selfimprovement. It is my contention that ABET programmes are not flexible enough to accommodate these multiple roles. The learner's responses in the interviews contain important suggestions on how to improve ABET programmes. The study concludes with the recommendation for ABET programmes.
