Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research investigates casework intervention for abused women in Moses Kotane
Local Municipality.
The purpose of this research is to present a theoretical and practical framework from a
casework perspective for dealing with abused women. The motivation for the study
was based on the need of social workers to have a framework when applying
casework during intervention with abused women. The framework will offer guidance
and will ensure that the service rendered to abused women is of a good quality.
The objectives of this study is to investigate the nature and extent of the abuse of
women in Moses Kotane Local Municipality, to explain the causes and consequences
of abuse, and to describe casework intervention strategies to address abuse of women.
The research covers the nature and prevalence of abuse of women as well as the
causes of abuse. The consequences of abuse of women are also outlined in the
research report.
A practice perspective, a theory and a model which can be applied during intervention
with abused women, is also included in the report. A practical framework is also
included with the help of literature reviewed.
The empirical research involved both qualitative and quantitative methods. This
section presents findings in the form of tables and figures and gives an analysis of the
findings. The findings were analyzed and compared with the findings from previous
studies undertaken by various authors. The findings can be used as a guideline by
social workers when applying casework during intervention with abused women.
Recommendations are also included in the report.

Factors underlying women's decision not to report physical abuse : a qualitative explorationDamon, Franzett Elize 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Violence against women, commonly known as women abuse, is currently evolving into a
serious social problem. In South Africa thousands of women are victims of violence
inflicted by their intimate partners. Although violence against women is a serious
violation of human rights, it is often not recognised as such. Violence against women in
intimate relationships often results in women experiencing serious physical,
psychological and reproductive health problems. When living or trapped in abusive
relationships, women are exposed to injuries, ailments and diseases, wounds, chronic
pain, infertility and internal bleeding. In spite of the fact that governments, including the
South Africa government, have committed themselves to addressing women abuse
through legislation, large numbers of women still experience extraordinary high levels of
violence. However, many women neglect to report incidents of violence. Many women
remain in such relationships, legislation aimed at protecting their rights not withstanding.
The aim of this study was to explore why women neglect to report incidents of violence
and to explore women's experiences of violence. Seven coloured women between the
ages of 21 and 38 years and living in a small rural town in the Western Cape participated
in the study. In-depth interviews were used to obtain information from these women.
The extent of the problem of women abuse worldwide and in South Africa is illustrated
by research conducted internationally as well as locally. Radical feminism is used as a
theoretical framework to interpret the causes of women abuse, the 'acceptance' of women
abuse by the community and society and the reasons why women choose not to report
incidents of abuse. The analysis and the interpretation of the data is done against the
background of social practices embedded in the patriarchal structuring of society. It was
found that women's experiences and lives are predominantly structured in terms of their
sex and that women comply with expectations set by their intimate partners, family and
friends. In order to maintain their relationships, secure a household income and to protect
their children against poverty, women remain silent about the abuse they suffer. The
study also found that women's responses to abuse relate to the sources and options
available to them.

Social support services for abused women in shelters : perspectives of social workersSithole, Anna 03 1900 (has links)
Violence against women is a global phenomenon and it has over the past three decades occupied a central position in international discourse. Despite the extensive literature, little has been documented about the social support services offered to the abused women in shelters. A qualitative research approach was employed in this study to explore, describe, and contextualise the experiences and challenges of social workers in the social support services rendered to abused women in shelters. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with social workers involved in rendering services to abused women in shelters in Gauteng. Ethical issues were taken into consideration. Data were analysed using Tesch’s eight steps (in Creswell, 2009) and verified using Guba and Lincoln’s model (in Krefting, 2003) to test the trustworthiness of the data.
The key findings of the study highlight the important role that social workers who provide social services to abused women in shelters play in the process of empowerment and protection of these women, who benefit from the social support service programmes that the shelters render on a daily basis. These findings also reveal that due to limited resources, the social workers cannot provide these social support services effectively without assistance. This study also reflects the need for a multidisciplinary approach, and emphasises the need for other stakeholders such as the SAPS, Health, Home Affairs, Department of Social Development, and the embassies of foreign countries to play a more significant role within the sheltering services in order to provide a comprehensive service to abused women. It is clear that social workers have limited professional support and experience many challenges in rendering social services. / Social Work / M.S.W. (Social Work)

Guidelines for a shelter service delivery for victims of abuseGroenewald, Johanna Jacoba 11 1900 (has links)
This research was initiated, based on the recommendations of Groenewald (2006:126-127), in the Evaluation of Programmes of Shelters for Victims of Abuse in Gauteng Province, to develop a shelter service delivery model.
The research is exploratory in nature and outlines the literature review, methodologies, tested shelter model and findings based on the experiences of stakeholders. These stakeholders are responsible for the registration and management of shelters for victims of abuse in South Africa. They include nine Provincial Victim Empowerment Programme Co-ordinators and thirty-two shelter managers.
The main objectives for shelter managers and Government Departments, such as Social Development, are to provide care, support and protection. The aim is also to empower those who were caught up in relationships, fraught with gender-based violence, as well as to break the cycle of violence. This is presented in the guidelines for a shelter service delivery model for victims of abuse.
The shelter model focuses on three phases:
o Intake procedures
o Programmes and services
o Exit strategy
These three phases address both psycho-social issues and the self care of service providers.
The main purpose of the shelter model is to provide social service providers with a structural format for intervention with victims of abuse and their significant
others. The outcome, for most of them, should be to come to terms with themselves and create a personal vision for the future without abuse or, alternatively, to take a firm stand against such actions. The model is based on a person-centered approach in order to assist victims of violence, within a development model, to attain effective living.
Other findings of the research are, among others, that there is neither legislation, nor registration procedures for shelters for victims of abuse in place, except for Non-Profit Organisations, which is voluntary. It is recommended that Government should consider the amendment of the Domestic Violence Act, 116 of 1998. These amendments should include accreditation of service providers, registration requirements, norms, standards and uniform funding criteria. / Social Work / D. Phil. (Social Work)

Paulo Freire se benadering tot leer en onderrig as teenvoeter vir die kultuur van geweld teen vroue en kinders in Suid-Afrika / Paulo Freire’s approach to learning and teaching as an antidote against the culture of violence against women and children in South AfricaKloppers, Daniel Frederik 09 1900 (has links)
The Brazilian educator Paulo Freire is considered to be one of the most important educators of the twentieth century. His approach to adult education has been applied to various fields, but never directly to prevent violence against women and children. The purpose of this study was to ascertain how Freire’s approach to learning and teaching can be used as an antidote against violence against women and children in South Africa. The study consists of an analytical literature review and qualitative study with eleven participants.
To answer the research question, the study commences with a literature study on the reasons for violence against women and children. Therafter the focus shifts to the adult basic education, adult learning and the restraints in adult basic education in South Africa. In the next chapter Freire’s work and his approach to adult education is dis-cussed. Key elements to his approach is tabled whereafter critique on and the im-portance of his approach, as well as its application in South Africa, is discussed.
In the qualitative empirical study the results of the questions in the interview guide with regard to violence and adult basic education is discussed, whereafter the results are analised in the final chapter in view of the literature study.
After the consideration of the data, it is recommended that cognisance must be taken of the challenges to adult basic education and Freire’s approachwhich can still be utilised as a medium in adult basic education to combat violence. A practical proposal for antiviolence education is made through a antiviolence lesson plan for ABE. The research concludes with limitations and recommendations. / ABET and Youth Development / M. Ed. Barriers to leaving an abusive relationship amongst heterosexual women living in the Inanda district in KwaZulu-NatalPadayachee, Dhevamoney 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English, with abstracts and keywords in English, Afrikaans and isiZulu / South Africa has been known to have the highest rate of gender-based violence globally. This qualitative study locates gender-based violence using the interpretive phenomenological paradigm and multicultural feminism as both allowed participants’ to be given a voice. This
study thus enabled women who have been abused to discuss their perception of their own experiences. The primary aim of the study is orientated towards an increased understanding
of the possible barriers that prevent women from leaving their abusers. The main findings point out how victim manipulation, financial abuse, isolation and responses by social and
legal services serve as barriers to the women leaving their abusive partners. The secondary aim contributes to an understanding of the risk factors influencing gender-based violence.
Furthermore, the study explores the impact of prolonged abuse on the participants.
The criteria used for the selection were women with diverse backgrounds from the Inanda district, who have lived in abusive relationships for two years or longer. Eight participants
completed the research process and were selected using the purposive sampling method.
Significantly, this study provides an insight into the reality of how women process and give meanings to their experiences of abuse. Hence, the research sought to inform the literature and the greater community on the lived experiences of women in abusive relationships. Understanding women’s lived experiences of intimate partner violence in a non-profit organisation in Johannesburg, South AfricaBam, Bongiwe 10 1900 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in English, isiXhosa and isiZulu / Research about intimate partner violence (hereafter IPV) in South Africa indicate that there are high prevalence rates. The negative effects of this phenomenon create a wide range of physical, mental and emotional problems for those exposed to it. There have been various intervention programmes designed to address IPV. However, the high incidence indicates that these have been ineffective. Seeking to explore women’s lived experiences of IPV at a non-profit organisation, this study gathered data from women with experiences of IPV. Eight participants were selected based on purposive sampling technique from a non-profit organization in Johannesburg. Utilizing semi-structured interviews conducted in English for a duration of one hour, data was gathered from the participants. Using IPA and the ecological model as a theoretical framework to interpret the women’s lived experiences. The findings of the study indicated that individual factors such as childhood exposure to violence influenced the women’s lived experiences of IPV. Stereotypical gender roles and economic strains were found to be at the core of the women’s lived experiences of IPV. Furthermore, broader societal values and beliefs about violence proved to validate and normalise the violence women experienced. The findings broaden our understanding of intimate partner violence and offer an opportunity to add knowledge of intimate partner violence in the South African context. / Uphando malunga nobundlobongela obenziwa liqabane othandana nalo (apha okubizwa ngokuba yi-IPV) eMzantsi Afrika lubonakalisa ukuba bukwizinga eliphezulu.
