Study of the role of the emerging professional "Child Welfare Worker" as social case worker in the post-war Japanese child welfare programOtani, David Yoshiharu January 1952 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / This study was made to analyze the function of the "Child
Welfare Worker," who is the first caseworker in the history of
social work in Japan. It is traditional for our historians in
this field to describe Japanese social work practice as starting to modernize itself on a systematic scientific basis about three decadee ago, particularly during the past decade with
the rise of socialism. However, we have never had caseworkers
using a well-recognized social work technique before. All
books and articles in magazines concerning social work were
concerned with social service institutions but no, or at best
casual, attention was paid to the skills of the workers who
were working with their clients in connection with these
institutions. This new Child Welfare Program that currently is focusing upon the metrhod, skills and techniques of the
case worker is something unique, unheard of and unknowm to
our traditional social work practice, even more so to the
people in the community. But it seems to be growing rapidly
and is receiving increased attention both from the social
work profession and from the community.
This study is being made to examine this new setting in
the perspective of its past, present and future through a
conscious and critical analysis of twenty cases carried by
these new case workers.

Harvesting the Future: the Impacts of the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program Mexico – Canada on the Participants and in the Development of the Sending CommunitiesMaxil Platas, Maria Fernanda 08 August 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the impact that the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) between Mexico and Canada has on the Mexican workers participating in it and in their communities in Mexico. The experience of the SAWP allows its participants to develop themselves and therefore contribute to the development of their communities and home towns. While some people will see this program as merely for poverty alleviation, this research shows that with the right incentives it has potential to become a development tool for many rural communities in different states of Mexico.

HIV/AIDS and HCV risk factors related to homelessness: Are front line workers equipped with knowledge to best support shelter clients?Hastings, Sarah 16 August 2018 (has links)
Background
Shelter employees of the Victoria Cool Aid Society (VCAS) work with clients living with or at risk of contracting, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The purpose of this thesis is to assess whether the VCAS shelter staff need further HIV/AIDS and HCV education to support shelter clients.
Methods
A two-part (A and B) survey consisting of 70 questions asked 38 Emergency Support Workers to: A) rate their ability (expertise) to answer HIV/AIDS and HCV related questions, and B) identify which questions contain important knowledge to know for their work. Staff were recruited via Posters on bulletin boards around shelters sites as well as an email, and two follow up emails, informing staff about the survey. The survey explored the following subjects: 1) HIV/AIDS (12 questions), 2) Hep C (11 questions), 3) Health and Substance Use (3 questions), 4) Protocol (3 questions), and 5) Community Agencies (6 questions). From this format, it was possible to assess where staff felt their knowledge levels could use improvement (low and medium knowledge levels) and what topics they felt important to know for their work (high importance to know). These two parts of the survey, together, were then used to determine questions to include in a future training course i.e. questions were staff reported low or medium knowledge levels and high importance to know.
Results
Results for each of the five sections showing both lower levels of knowledge (expertise) and higher knowledge importance, were as follows: 1) HIV/AIDS: 8 out of 12 questions, 2) HCV: 10 out of 11 questions, 3) Health and Substance Use: 1 out of 3 questions, 4) Protocol: 3 out of 3 questions, and 5) Community Agencies: 3 out of 6 questions. Survey results were delivered via Power Point presentation to management of the Victoria Cool Aid Society using simple graphs and charts to describe easily the findings to stakeholders. The presentation emphasised that staff overall are in need of specific HIV/AIDS and HCV education.
Conclusion
Emergency shelter workers are in need of HIV/AIDS and HCV education. The results can inform a HIV/AIDS and HCV educational course for VCAS shelter staff. / Graduate

This research focuses on the economic, socio-environmental and political dynamics related to organization, construction of collective identity and empowerment of workers in recycling cooperatives, taking into account their relationships with several external agents. The choice of this object relies on two main aspects: - the characterization of this activity as an occupation being structured and recognized, representing a possibility of sustainability and autonomy for sectors of low income people in developing countries; - a peculiar kind of State-civil society relation, in which recycling cooperatives interact simultaneously with local and regional public entities, and non-governmental organizations, like catholic institutions or other NGOs. Through a comparative analysis of characteristics of three recycling cooperatives in Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region, distinct results were found, concerning internal processes of work organization and decision-making participation, as well as the perceptions, motivations and expectations of the recycling workers towards their occupation.

The Effects of Permanent Partial Disability on Claim Disposition AgreementsTodd, Brandy L., 1977- 06 1900 (has links)
x, 43 p. : ill. (some col.) A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Increasingly, workers' compensation (WC) insurers are turning to claim
disposition agreements (CDA) as a means of reducing costs. CDAs are agreements
between injured workers and insurers that close claims for a lump sum payment in
lieu of other payments to which workers may be entitled. Intuitively, CDA payment
amounts are expected to vary in response to changes in WC benefit levels. Models
for decision-making processes related to lump sum versus benefit streams suggest
the opposite. This thesis examines the relationship between CDA amounts and
permanent partial disability (PPD) using two models. The first model utilizes
individual claim information before and after a legislated benefit increase in the
state of Oregon. The second model examines aggregate claims and payments made
over a 16-year period from 1990 through 1995. / Committee In Charge
