We analyzed five hundred people between industry professionals and students. Data collection exercise occurred through the use of forms and semi-structured interviews. As an outcome, we concluded that, among other aspects, such transformation have not only generated instability and insecurity, but also triggered the need of professionals in this sector with competencies quite distinct to fulfill and resolve different types of problems throughout the years / Esta tese aborda como a reestruturação do trabalho bancário afetou a forma de entrega desses profissionais advindos de dez das maiores instituições financeiras brasileiras que desenvolveram Programas de Profissionalização e Demissão Voluntaria. Pesquisamos quinhentas pessoas entre profissionais do ramo e estudantes.

Essays on the Economics of Organization

Lai, Tat-kei 10 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis consists of three empirical studies on the economics of organization using novel data on organizations for analysis. Chapter 1 uses the longitudinal and nationally representative data from Statistics Canada's Workplace and Employee Survey to examine the distinct effects of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on decentralization of decision rights. Using a sample of workplaces from different sectors and controlling for unobserved workplace-level heterogeneity, I find that decentralization (defined as the case when workers can plan work for themselves) is more likely when database software is used (which reduces learning cost) but is less likely when communication system is used (which reduces communication cost). These results are consistent with the predictions of the organizational model by Garicano (2000). Chapter 2 also uses the data from Workplace and Employee Survey and examines the impact of competition on the quality of the middle management in terms of the use of Human Resources Management (HRM) practices. I find that increased competition leads to an improvement in managerial quality, proxied by the use of HRM practices. These results complement the industry-specific evidence documented in the literature. Chapter 3, co-authored with Professor Varouj A. Aivazian, uses the management score of Bloom and Van Reenen (2007) as a proxy for managerial quality to examine the extent to which market structure interacts with capital structure. We find that leverage is negatively related to competition (measured by Import Penetration Ratio, Lerner Index, and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index). Besides, we find that competition is positively associated with managerial quality, and that managerial quality is in turn negatively related to leverage. We conclude that managerial quality explains the impact of competition on leverage which suggests that managerial quality serves as an important link between capital structure and market structure.

Une étude sur le rôle modérateur de la situation familiale sur la relation entre les conditions de l'organisation du travail et la détresse psychologique

Morency, Kathy 05 1900 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to verify the moderating effects of the family situation on the relationship between work organization conditions and psychological distress in the Canadian workforce. As a secondary element, the thesis looks at the direct effect that each variable can add to psychological distress. To complete this study, data from Statistics Canada’s ‘Canadian Community Health Survey’ (CCHS), cycle 2.2, was used. The completed multivariable analyses demonstrated that an irregular work schedule was associated with the risk of experiencing psychological distress. In terms of family situation, we conclude that being in a couple acts as a protective factor against psychological distress. In addition, income sufficiency increases the risk of psychological distress. Moreover, the results partly show a moderating effect of the family situation, as only household economic status modifies the relationship between decision-making authority and physical exertion at work in explaining psychological distress. As such, these two workplace factors increase the risk of developing psychological distress when economic status is taken into account. As a consequence, the effects of certain workplace organization conditions influence psychological distress differently depending on the household’s economic situation.

An Investigation of Workplace Characteristics Influencing Knowledge Worker’s Sense of Belonging and Organizational Outcomes

Lu, Jing 30 January 2015 (has links)
Workplace design practitioners and organizational managers are increasingly noticing all the various aspects in which the workplace affects organizations and their employees. The studies on the relationships between the workplace, organizations and their employees are more focused on psychology or facility management than the socio-spatial perspective. Workplace design, configuration and spatial features impact how well and how much a company can benefit from its human capital. Although the concept of the relation of workplace to an organization is not new, it is relatively unexamined. This thesis introduces a new set of spatial variables to workplace studies, following the concept of personal control. The discussed spatial variables effectively describe the features of workplace floor plan and the characteristics of a workstation. Furthermore, this dissertation develops a method that creates the link between workplace spatial setting and a sense of belonging, organizational outcomes – organizational commitment, work motivation, job satisfaction and work performance. Based on the detailed statistical analyses of a field survey that included 336 participants from 16 organizations, a model of spatial features influence sense of belonging and organizational outcomes was identified within this study. The research findings provide evidence for creating a workplace with a sense of belonging and better organizational outcomes through spatial design. This dissertation is comprised of six chapters. Chapter 1, an introduction, provides a general study background, discusses the problems to be solved in the study, and proposes an approach to deal with the target problems. Chapter 2 firstly reviews the current workplace studies related to spatial features. Secondly, it discusses the influence of workstation design on the human muscle system. Thirdly, it discusses the most relevant psychological issues at a workplace as stated by previous researches. Finally, the chapter reveals how a workplace affects the work of an organization. Chapter 3 specifies how workplace influences an employee’s sense of belonging and environmental control, and introduces the conceptual model. It also introduces the independent and dependent variables, generates research hypotheses. Chapter 4 describes the field survey design, procedures and the participants. It also covers the initial data analysis of the field survey: how the survey instrument, the questionnaire, was developed, commenting on all the aspects it includes – spatial experiences, work motivation, commitment, sense of belonging, job satisfaction and work performance. Chapter 5 is data analysis. This chapter discusses the research findings on workplace design features in relation to employees’ sense of belonging, satisfaction with ambient physical environment, and organizational outcomes – commitment, work motivation, job satisfaction and individual work performance. The final chapter summarizes the findings, comments on design implications of the research results, and draws conclusions. The dissertation ends in admitting the limitations of this research and discussing practical implications for future investigation.
