Violence in schools : a correlational study into the relationship between an Afrocentric orientation and attitudes towards violence among African secondary school learners in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Sekhesa, Thabo. 05 May 2014 (has links)
This correlation study investigated the relationship between Africentric values (Collective work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics and Self determination) as measured by the Children’s Africentric Value Scale (CAVS) (Belgrave, Townsend, Cherry, & Cunningham, 1997) and attitudes towards violence reflected by Culture of Violence and Reactive Violence as measured by the Attitudes Towards Violence Scale: A Measure for adolescents (Funk, Elliot, Urman, Flores, & Mock, 1999) with a sample of 200 secondary school learners in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal. There was no statistically significant relationship between the aforementioned Africentric values and attitudes towards violence. Gender was found to be a predictor of Reactive Violence with male participants being more prone to endorse reactive violence. Recommendations for school violence interventions based on Africentric values were also provided and discussed in this study. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2011.

Teixeira, Joana D Arc. January 2015 (has links)
The specific goal is to identify, examine and map the transition of a tutelary-correctional-repressive system into a state policy one, where there are different punitive forms, which delimit the composition and distribution of the subjects of punishment from the risk management justification. Three distinct periods in the constitution in the history of social and educational care of these last twenty years have been defined as an analytical field: (1) re-democratization context of Brazil, advocacy and recognition of young people as subjects of rights - the early 1990; (2) promulgation and implementation of the Statute of Children and Adolescents; (3) process of reconfiguring the socio-educational system of admission: municipalization and decentralization of care, the late 1999 - 2010, reaffirming the context of the CASA Foundation (Socio Foundation Care Centre for Adolescents) service policies and implementation of SINASE (National System of Socio-Education) process. For the constitution and analysis of this thesis, the following points were also prioritized: field survey, semi-structured interviews with young people and other actors that make up the structure of the socio-educational system. In theoretical and methodological terms, the theoretical and analytical construction on government policies that extends to young men and women in social-educational system is sought in the international and national production, especially the study of punitive trends from authors who defend thesis of an ongoing ...

January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: The current protagonism of male gender youths in violent acts have been verified in several studies and appointments that lead them as the main victms and authors of such acts, especially at the underprivileged sections of society. Although this data is not apparently surprising the relation between masculinity and violence has not been focused and, therefore, still be naturalized limiting all discussions concerning this issue. In this way, this survey aims at describing the construction process of masculinities and its interface with violence, taking into account narratives from youths who had commited an offense. For this, we interviewed four teenagers (aged varied from 14 to 16 years old) who had been sent or had already spent time at a young offenders' institution, located in a city in the countryside of São Paulo State. Their narratives took between thirty to sixty minutes and were recorded and then transcribed. The analises were conducted based on the narrative conceptions of Mikhail Bakhtin, Jerome Bruner and other authors who highlight, from a dialogic perspective, narrative productions as sources of discourses which uncover subjetivation processes as well as in studies about masculinities. The results suggest that the relation between masculinities and violence is more of a belief than a fait accompli. In spite of being extremely exposed to violence and its variations, and performing a certain expected way to be man, based on strength, aggressiveness and rationality all over their lives, the narratives pointed out other modes of subjetivation not necessarily connected to being violent, despite of this notion still be present in their discourses about life, the others and himself / Mestre

The influence of exposure to community violence on adolescents' sense of hope within a disadvantaged community in Cape Town

Serena Issacs January 2010 (has links)

Violent crime has proven to have profound negative effects, particularly on those living within communities where violence is a dominant feature. The victims often tend to be adolescents, who, while striving for a better future, are often quite vulnerable to its effects. The present study addresses this important social phenomenon which faces the youth of South Africa. There is a growing need to understand the manner in which the ever-increasing exposure of adolescents living in communities which have high rates of violence affects its victims as well as determine those factors which could provide resiliency against those devastating effects. Moreover, this study focuses on adolescents&rsquo / sense of hope as a resiliency factor. The purpose of this research study was to ascertain adolescents&rsquo / understanding of and the meaning they give to exposure to community violence and the extent to which that exposure affects their sense of hope. In this qualitative study, data was collected by means of two, one hour focus groups comprising a total of 14 participants, 14-15 years of age, residing in a community with high rates of violence. The format of the discussion was semi-structured and conducted in English. Various theories were used in order to better describe the information, such as the social learning theory, feminist theory and Bronfenbrenner&rsquo / s ecological model, but the epistemological framework utilized was social constructionism. Ethical principles such as confidentiality and obtaining informed consent were strictly adhered to. The information received from the participants was analyzed using Braun and Clarke&rsquo / s (2006) thematic analysis and presented in two thematic categories with corresponding themes discussed accordingly
