Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-04T22:02:02Z (GMT).

Gomes Filho, Fernando Ferreira January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Introduction: The low supply of organs has led to the expansion of criteria for kidney transplantation (KT). The concern with the impact of these measures in the long term has motivated studies in the attempt to correlate histological findings with late glomerular function rate (GFR). Objective: To correlate the histological findings in time zero biopsy with GFR in order to identify reliable criteria to aid in the correct evaluation of the organ. Materials and methods: A retrospective study involving 395 KT performed between 2007 and 2017, where all time zero biopsy (TzB) was reviewed considering histological criteria by compartment (vascular, interstitial, tubular and inflammatory) and correlated with GFR after one year. Results: Among the donors, 56.9% were men, with a mean age of 39 years, whose main causes of death were cranial trauma (44.3%) and stroke (45.9%). The histological analysis of TzB revealed 6% of glomeruli sclerosis, with 19.5% of the samples presenting vascular alterations (34% hyalinosis, 18% fibroelastosis, 36% arteriolosclerosis and 12% thrombosis); interstitial fibrosis in 55.5%; tubular changes in 77.3% (34.4% of acute tubular necrosis and tubular ischemia in 77.3%) and non-specific inflammatory infiltrate in 2.9%. Linear regression analysis showed that the main histological changes that had impact was fibrosis (p = 0.000), tubular alteration (p = 0.036) and sclerosis (p = 0.008). Conclusion: Although the evolution of KT is multifactorial, the impact of... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Let's Get Sorted: The Path to Zero Waste at Pomona College

Sherburne, Sara 01 January 2019 (has links)
This senior thesis in environmental analysis explores the Zero Waste ideal and its practical application to a college campus. Given the growing global trash crisis and its grave environmental, social and economic consequences, the Zero Waste movement argues for a holistic shift from ‘end of pipe’ disposal practices to those that promote the cyclical use of materials, with little-to-no matter ending up in the landfill or incinerator. Cities and colleges around the world have adopted these Zero Waste goals in an effort to function as more sustainable, efficient and moral entities. With a case study of Pomona College, I assess the current status of waste production and diversion and identify opportunities to move the College towards its 2030 Zero Waste goal and to continue its growth as a resource-wise campus. Though the College has made substantial strides towards sustainability, significant room for improvement remains, particularly in regard to waste. Various infrastructural, political, educational, data driven and cultural changes are recommended to reduce waste at Pomona College and to evolve students into conscientious resource-users on campus and beyond.

Discussing Death with Young Children

Olin, Teresa Clare 01 June 2016 (has links)
Research has shown that young children have some understandings of death. However, adults are hesitant (or even avoidant) to discuss death with young children for fear that they will scare them, or they are not sure what to tell them. Sessions were part of this project, educating adults in a child’s development and how that development affects what young children understand about death. The three sessions, completed over two weeks, included three topics including anxieties the adult may have about death, cognitive and emotional development of the young child, and the adult’s role in discussing death with young children. Participants completed a pre- and post-test. Results indicated that adults felt more comfortable discussing the death of a person with a young child, as well as feeling less avoidant of having those discussions.

Factorization in polynomial rings with zero divisors

Edmonds, Ranthony A.C. 01 August 2018 (has links)
Factorization theory is concerned with the decomposition of mathematical objects. Such an object could be a polynomial, a number in the set of integers, or more generally an element in a ring. A classic example of a ring is the set of integers. If we take any two integers, for example 2 and 3, we know that $2 \cdot 3=3\cdot 2$, which shows that multiplication is commutative. Thus, the integers are a commutative ring. Also, if we take any two integers, call them $a$ and $b$, and their product $a\cdot b=0$, we know that $a$ or $b$ must be $0$. Any ring that possesses this property is called an integral domain. If there exist two nonzero elements, however, whose product is zero we call such elements zero divisors. This thesis focuses on factorization in commutative rings with zero divisors. In this work we extend the theory of factorization in commutative rings to polynomial rings with zero divisors. For a commutative ring $R$ with identity and its polynomial extension $R[X]$ the following questions are considered: if one of these rings has a certain factorization property, does the other? If not, what conditions must be in place for the answer to be yes? If there are no suitable conditions, are there counterexamples that demonstrate a polynomial ring can possess one factorization property and not another? Examples are given with respect to the properties of atomicity and ACCP. The central result is a comprehensive characterization of when $R[X]$ is a unique factorization ring.

Lateral strength of zero bond masonry walls subjected to wind loads

Schulze, Peter, peter.schulze@deakin.edu.au January 1978 (has links)
Masonry walls are usually laid with the individual masonry units along a course overlapping units in the course below. Commonly, the perpend joints in the course occur above the mid-points of the units below to form a ‘half-bond’ or above a third point to form a ‘third-bond’. The amount of this overlap has a profound influence on the strength of a wall supported on three or four sides, where lateral pressures from wind cause combined vertical and horizontal flexure. Where masonry units are laid with mortar joints, the torsional shear bond resistance between the mortar and overlapping units largely determines the horizontal flexural strength. If there is zero bond strength between units, then the horizontal flexural strength is derived from the frictional resistance to torsion on the overlapping bed-faces of the units. This thesis reports a theoretical and experimental investigation into the frictional properties of overlapping units when subjected to combinations of vertical and horizontal moments and vertical axial compression. These basic properties were used to develop a theory to predict the lateral strength of walls supported on two, three or four sides. A plastic theory of behaviour was confirmed by experiment. The theory was then used to determine maximum unbraced panel sizes for particular boundary conditions. Design charts were developed to determine temporary bracing requirements for panels during construction.

Asymptotics of Eigenpolynomials of Exactly-Solvable Operators

Bergkvist, Tanja January 2007 (has links)
<p>The main topic of this doctoral thesis is asymptotic properties of zeros in polynomial families arising as eigenfunctions to exactly-solvable differential operators. The study was initially inspired by a number of striking results from computer experiments performed by G. Masson and B. Shapiro for a more restrictive class of operators. Our research is also motivated by a classical question going back to S. Bochner on a general classification of differential operators possessing an infinite sequence of orthogonal eigenpolynomials. In general however, the sequence of eigenpolynomials of an exactly-solvable operator is not an orthogonal system and it can therefore not be studied by means of the extensive theory known for such systems. Our study can thus be considered as the first steps to a natural generalization of the asymptotic behaviour of the roots of classical orthogonal polynomials. Exactly-solvable operators split into two major classes: non-degenerate and degenerate. We prove that in the former case, as the degree tends to infinity, the zeros of the eigenpolynomial are distributed according to a certain probability measure which is compactly supported on a tree and which depends only on the leading term of the operator. Computer experiments indicate the existence of a limiting root measure in the degenerate case too, but that it is compactly supported (conjecturally on a tree) only after an appropriate scaling which is conjectured (and partially proved) in this thesis. One of the main technical tools in this thesis is the Cauchy transform of a probability measure, which in the considered situation satisfies an algebraic equation. Due to the connection between the asymptotic root measure and its Cauchy transform it is therefore possible to obtain detailed information on the limiting zero distribution.</p>

Presentation of the Namibia Zero Order Stations and Information Site for Directorate of Survey and Mapping

Haimene, Rachel N. January 2007 (has links)
<p>This project is focused on the presentation of the Namibia Zero Order Stations, including the descriptions of the 21 stations across the country and to create information site for Directorate of Survey and Mapping in Namibia. The main reason for the implementation of web site is for the distribution of information and data to domestic and international clients. Most of the materials and information used in this project were available in digital format. Some information was collected from Directorate of Survey and Mapping of Namibia, Swedesurvey of Sweden, and Asci of Sweden as well as from the internet and library facilities. As such it was very important to analyse and display geo-spatial data before creating web site. The computer makes it possible to create a link between filed documents, maps, graphic documents and other related information using hyperlinking. Therefore the computer made the world easier to communicate and mapping via internet.</p>

Aktivitet och ljus

Olsson, Anna January 2009 (has links)

Brundin, Robert, Abrahamsen, Alexander January 2006 (has links)
