The Abraham-Minkowski controversy and He-McKellar-Wilkens phase

Miladinovic, Nikola January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates the long-standing Abraham-Minkowski controversy concerning the momentum of light inside a dielectric medium. A revealing connection to the optical He-McKellar-Wilkens (HMW) phase is found upon studying the Langrangian describing the classical laser-atom interaction. This connection is further highlighted by moving into a semi-classical model in which the phase arises as a result of the transformation between the Abraham and Minkowski Hamiltonians. The HMW along with the Aharonov-Casher phases are found to be both dynamic and geometric depending on the representation. It is shown that an optical version of the HMW phase is acquired by a dipole moving in a laser beam, and I propose several interferometric schemes in order to observe the optical HMW effect. Finally, by moving into a cavity system, it is possible to account for the back action of the atoms on the light which changes the electromagnetic mode structure. This increase in model sophistication grants an alternative vantage from which to interpret the Abraham-Minkowski problem. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Descriptors for Edaravone; Studies on its Structure, and Prediction of Properties

Liu, Xiangli, Aghamohammadi, Amin, Afarinkia, Kamyar, Abraham, R.J., Acree, W.E. Jr, Abraham, M.H. 15 March 2021 (has links)
Yes / Literature solubilities and NMR and IR studies have been used to obtain properties or descriptors of edaravone. These show that edaravone has a significant hydrogen bond acidity so that it must exist in solution partly as the OH and NH forms, as found by Freyer et al. Descriptors have been assigned to the keto form which has a low hydrogen bond acidity, and which is the dominant form in nonpolar solvents. Physicochemical properties of the keto form can be been calculated such as solubilities in nonpolar solvents, partition coefficients from water to nonpolar solvents, and partition coefficients from air to biological phases.

Some aspects of the meaning of Abraham in the life, works and thought of Louis Massignon

Landrien, Simone January 1968 (has links)
This thesis aims at studying the life, works and thought of Louis Massignon and at demonstrating how they find their unity in the God of Abraham. It is not a chronological study but a study of the principal themes of his works, following the pattern he often used -- the five pillars of Islamic religious and social life: alms giving which includes the respect of the guest and his word, prayer seen under the aspect of intercession, pilgrimage, sacrifice exemplified in fasting and a witness to faith in the Judgment of God. In chapter VI an attempt is made to study the evolution of the thought of Massignon from 1914 to 1947 concerning some aspects of the Christian-Mus1im encounter which, for him, points to the Judgment.

The Evolving Emancipator: An Analysis of Abraham Lincoln and the Progression and Development of His Emancipationist Impulse

Rodriguez, Sharon N 01 January 2017 (has links)
This research looks at the narrative of Abraham Lincoln as the Great Emancipator versus the Evolving Emancipator. The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the narrative of the Evolving Emancipator and show an imperfect man who achieved this action after trials and tribulations. This has been achieved by examining letters and other primary sources to fully understand the scope of Lincoln’s sentiments regarding slavery. My research shows a man who acknowledged slavery because it was sanctioned by the law. He recognized the rights of slave owners, both to retain their slaves and to have fugitive slaves returned, as they were clearly guaranteed in the Constitution. My thesis aims to accurately represent a man with conflicting thoughts who at the end of the day was sensible about his time, but through extensive pressure finally found his conviction with his prime goal being to unite his nation once more. By providing analyses of primary sources, like his letters to Horace Greeley and his draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, I was able to garner an account of Abraham Lincoln’s adaptability to the social, political and economic changes during his presidency and decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. There is no shortage of data on the subject at hand and through primary and secondary sources I was able to collect a copious amount of details for my thesis. The sources used for this study effectively give a well-rounded idea of the era’s current events that helped formulate and add to my research.

Kandler, Susanne 29 August 2024 (has links)
