Syfte: Studiens syfte är att undersöka och belysa elevers och lärares uppfattningar om matematik i användningen av guldmaterialet kopplat till matematikböckerna i en Västsvensk Montessoriklass. Bakgrund: De teoretiska utgångspunkterna innehåller en redovisning av Lpo 94 samt kursplaner i matematik men även utvalda delar kring Maria Montessori och hennes pedagogik. Följt av relevant litteratur och tidigare forskning kring matematik- undervisningen med inriktning på laborativ matematik. Metod: Studien är en kvalitativ undersökning där empirin bygger på intervjuer. Undersökningen grundar sig på åtta stycken elevers samt två lärares uppfattningar. Kvalitativ metod kännetecknas genom att upplevelser, uppfattningar, egenskaper, erfarenheter undersöks för att förstå egenskaper av det fenomen som undersöks. Resultat: I resultatet framgår det att matematikböckerna har en central roll i matematikundervisningen och eleverna har svårigheter att relatera matematiken till deras vardag. Det andra som framkommer är att guldmaterialet bidrar till att eleverna får en ökad abstraktionsförmåga. Eleverna ser dock arbetet med materialet som både arbetsamt och tidskrävande. Diskussion: Avslutningsvis diskuterar vi vald metod och studiens resultat i förhållande till tidigare forskning och litteratur i ämnet / Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine and emphasize pupils and teachers comprehension of mathematics and the use of the gold material in the use of the mathematic books in a West Swedish Montessori class. Background: The curriculum of the obligatory educational system (Lpo 94) is presented and the syllabus of mathematics but also chosen parts of Maria Montessori and her pedagogic. Relevant literature and previous research will be discussed. The direction will be to highlight mathematic education with focus on laborative mathematics. Method: The study is a qualitative research and includes a number of interviews. The research is based on eight pupils and two teacher’s comprehension. Qualitative method characteristic is comprehension, attribute and experiences to view and understand the attribute of the study’s phenomenon. Result : The mathematic books have a central role in the mathematics education and the pupils have a difficulty to relate the mathematics to their own life. The second consequence is that the gold materials contribute to a higher abstraction capacity. But the pupils think that working with the materials is both capacity and time demanding. Discussion: We discuss the chosen methods and the result of the study in relation to previous research and literature of the topic.
