Acculturation and Feminist Endorsement on Control of Health and Health Behaviors in Hispanic FemalesGarner, Ashley Nicole 08 1900 (has links)
Hispanic women are the fastest growing population in the United States. Thus, it is important to explore health disparities that affect this population and better understand potential causes. Several explanations have been proposed for disparities that exist including turning to cultural alternatives rather than conventional medicine, low numbers of health insurance enrollments among Hispanics, and acculturation. However, little attention has been given to explanations that take into account the unique experiences of Hispanic women. The present study explored these experiences through investigation of endorsement of feminist attitudes (e.g., gender role adherence and beliefs that men and women should be treated equally in society) and level of acculturation. Undergraduate Hispanic women (18-24 years of age, M = 20.25, SD = 1.51) at the University of North Texas completed measures including the Multidimensional Health Questionnaire, the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II, and the Liberal Feminist Attitude and Ideology Scale. Although results indicate that acculturation was not significant in the sample, feminist endorsement was found to be positively correlated with health-esteem, health-efficacy, and internal-health locus of control. Limitations and recommended directions for future research are explored.

The American Dream Short-Lived: The Decline of Academic Achievement and College Confidence through Acculturation, Perceptions of Ethnic Discrimination, and Concerns with Confirming StereotypesMiller, Alexis N 01 January 2018 (has links)
In this exploratory study, the goal was to examine patterns of perceived ethnic discrimination, stereotype confirmation, and acculturation within the context of a diverse, inclusive university. It was predicted that reported rates of perceived ethnic discrimination would be low, but the majority of students would still experience some type of discrimination at least once. The second hypothesis for this study was that higher levels of discrimination, acculturation and stereotype confirmation would result in lower levels of college self-efficacy and GPA. These factors were also predicted to be positively associated with each other as well. The personality trait, conscientiousness was predicted to positively associated with acculturation, college self-efficacy, and GPA. The study surveyed 50 undergraduate students from the University of Central Florida taking psychology courses through the online SONA participation system. 86.4% of participants perceived at least one instance of ethnic discrimination. Perceived ethnic discrimination was also associated with lower levels of college self-efficacy, but not GPA. Acculturation and stereotype confirmation had no significant relationships with neither college self-efficacy or GPA. High rates of acculturation to the dominant American society was associated with lower rates of perceived discrimination and stereotype confirmation, opposite of the original hypothesis. The personality trait conscientiousness was also not captured in this study, but agreeableness and openness revealed significant relationships between all ethnicity-related factors and GPA. Acculturation’s role in perceptions of discrimination and stereotype concerns is discussed in detail. Limitations and future directions are addressed in the context of sample size, race and ethnicity statistics, and the complexities of discrimination and acculturation.

The child rearing experiences of newcomer mothers after taking a parenting program in WinnipegLy, Gia 14 January 2016 (has links)
Canada is a nation known for being highly multiethnic due to its rich history of immigration. But many immigrant parents struggle with acculturation and, at the same time, they are faced with the challenge of raising their children in a new country. This study explored the process of transition among newcomer mothers living in Winnipeg. Using a qualitative approach, ten in-depth interviews were conducted to gain a greater understanding of the process that parents go through as they learn about a particular disciplinary approach - Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP). Four main themes emerged: 1) the meaning of parenting; 2) a new vision of parenting; 3) conflicting notions of discipline; and 4) navigating the acculturation gap. Each primary theme had several sub-themes that expressed the process of transition to a new parenting context. Many mothers had experienced corporal punishment as children but none approved of it. They explained that PDEP had provided them with a new non-violent vision of parenting. Mothers described the parenting changes they had made and how their confidence had increased since learning about PDEP. They also described the impact that the loss of extended family support had on parenting dynamics. Although some of the mothers observed that the PDEP program had not decreased the acculturation gap between them and their children, it had helped them to better understand their children’s perspectives. The implications of the findings for professionals who support newcomer parents are discussed. / February 2016

L'acculturation de la vie religieuse en Carie : cultes et représentations associés aux épiclèses des Zeus / The acculturation of religious life in Caria : Cults and representations associated with Zeus' epiclesisRivault, Joy 18 November 2016 (has links)
The objective of this study is to understand the religious acculturation and changes in Caria, through Zeus' epicleses, cults and representations associated with it. This work emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to all data related to places of worship. It leads us to articulate all the sources available to us through the use of various disciplines of archeology as well as philology, epigraphy, numismatics and iconography, to establish a knowledge network linking religious history and archeology of worship. This approach aims to reconstruct objectively as possible the Carian religious life and religious landscape. This is to study the interaction between practices and representations to understand the relationship between the spatial dimension of religious facts and the perception of them old. This research also questions the echoes between cults and symbolic elements that compose them. Each Zeus, it is thus necessary to determine the meaning of the epiclesis and representations associated with them and understand the cultic context in which they evolved. Through the study of the Jovian figure, whose attribute has become the symbol of the territory, the operation of the Carian religious system as a whole is revealed. The crossing of the various data finally allows us to understand the phenomenon of acculturation in Caria. The aim is to identify ongoing and contacts that different cultures have had and the changes they generated in the original cultural patterns of various groups. It is therefore necessary to distinguish the continuities and innovations that occur in the religious life in the region. Many pre-Hellenic elements are thus particularly notable in this conservative region, sometimes to identify traces of continuity or reappropriation between the Anatolian and Greek cults.
