/ Master of Arts (MA)

Adaptation to Repeated Eccentric Exercise in Males and FemalesStupka, Nicole 09 1900 (has links)
Unaccustomed eccentric exercise results in damage to skeletal muscle ultrastructure. One bout of eccentric exercise can induce adaptations in skeletal muscle, such that if the bout is repeated indices of muscle damage are attenuated. However, little is known about the pathways mediating these "protective" adaptations. The purpose of this thesis was to further characterize adaptations to repeated eccentric exercise and to investigate the hypothesis that increased stress protein content is associated with attenuated indices of muscle damage following the second exercise bout. Untrained male (N = 8) and untrained female (N = 8) subjects performed two bouts of unilateral, eccentric leg press and unilateral, eccentric knee extension exercises separated by 5.5 wk. Biopsies were taken from the vastus latera/is of the exercised and control (rest) leg. Blood samples and strength data were also collected. Following the second exercise bout the rise in serum CK activity, the post exercise force deficit and the extent of ultrastructural disruption as characterized by Z-disk streaming were attenuated, however ubiquitin conjugated protein content was elevated. Serum CK activity was lower in females as compared to males and ubiquitin conjugated protein content was greater in males as compared females. No gender difference was detected in the extent of Z-disk streaming or the relative magnitude of post exercise force deficit. Muscle macrophage counts were elevated over
resting values 24 h post exercise bout 1 and 2 in both males and females. Whereas, neutrophils counts were only elevated over resting values following the second exercise in females. HSP72 protein content did not change in response to eccentric exercise, but it tended to be greater in males as compared to females (p=0.053). HSP27 protein content increased in response to exercise in males only, although females had greater basal content. Following the second exercise bout bcl-2 protein content was greater in females as compared to males. In conclusion, adaptations to repeated eccentric exercise are associated not only with attenuated serum CK activity and force deficit as previously described, but also with decreased ultrastructural damage, increased ubiquitin conjugated
protein content and changes in stress protein content. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)

Considerations regarding Vulnerable Groups and Communities in NAPs : A Qualitative Review of the National Adaptation Plans of Bhutan, the Marshall Islands and ZambiaAlbinger, Laura January 2024 (has links)
National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) are central instruments supporting developing countries in their adaptation efforts and enhancing climate resilience. As the NAP documents outline a country's vulnerabilities to climate change and planned adaptation strategies, it is essential to examine how the most vulnerable groups are considered. In the IPCC’s Sixth Synthesis Report, the concepts of maladaptation and transformational adaptation feature prominently, with prior research connecting these concepts to the inclusion of vulnerable groups in adaptation efforts. This thesis provides an in-depth assessment of how vulnerable groups and communities are considered in the three selected NAPs of Bhutan, the Marshall Islands, and Zambia. A normative theoretical framework, the maladaptation-transformative adaptation continuum, is developed from relevant academic research to examine the consideration of vulnerable groups and communities throughout the NAP. Utilising a deductive qualitative content analysis, the central elements of this framework will be operationalised to review the three selected NAP documents. The findings indicate that all of the examined NAPs take vulnerable groups and communities into account by explicitly identifying the most vulnerable social groups, and including adaptation actions that target these vulnerable groups. The inclusion of vulnerable groups and communities in the formulation process and the planned implementation of adaptation measures vary, reflecting different positions along the maladaptation-transformative adaptation continuum.

Ispanų kultūrinė adaptacija Lietuvoje / Spanish cultural adaptation in lithuaniaVetočkina, Jelena 26 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Due to increased interest of Spanish language and culture in Lithuania over the last few years, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the Spanish sojourners adaptation in Lithuania. Furthermore, it is important to find out the main obstacles of Spanish culture representatives while communicating with locals, exploring the influence on their adaptation process. On a basis of qualitative research (9 semi – structured interviews) study concerning Spanish Cultural Adaptation in Lithuania has been carried out. The main assumption is that Spanish cultural adaptation is influenced by such internal factors as individual motivation to adapt in a host society, aim of arrival, motivation to learn Lithuanian language and communicate with Lithuanians. The external factors which influence Spanish Adaptation in Lithuania are the difference between climate, acceptance of the host society and barriers of communications with Lithuanians. The research has shown that firstly, Spanish are satisfied with the current reached status in Lithuania. The main reason of that is their fulfilment with occupied positions in a new country. Secondly, all of them maintain their personal identity. Thirdly, Spanish who live more than 10 years in Lithuania are more likely to associate themselves with Lithuanians depending on a place of their living, in Spain they consider to be Spanish and in Lithuania they are Lithuanians. Taking into account, that successful adaptation is defined as the individual... [to full text]

Modèle adaptatif d'activités pour les jeux ubiquitaires / Adaptive model of activities for ubiquitous video gameFrancillette, Yannick 18 December 2014 (has links)
Nowadays, the technologies and mobiles services are a part of our daily life thanks to smartphones and tablet computers. Currently, we live the realisation of Weiser's vision. The features and services provided are more important than technical objects. In this thesis, we are interested in a kind of computer applications: video games. Like other sectors, video games have to deal with mobile revolution in order to reinvent themselves and to interest players. However, video games on mobiles devices have to deal with the variation of playing conditions. We can call these conditions the player's context. The main objective of this thesis is to propose a model for the design of games that are able to adapt to the player's context. This model has to be generic and allow the game to adapt the proposed activities and objectives to the current context. Our proposition has two main elements. The first one is a generic model of the activities and the objectives which are proposed by the game. We have called this model "gameplay component". It is a formalization of the objectif, challenge, reward game loop concept. It allows us to represent a game as a tree. The second element is a model for detecting game tree which are compatible with a defined context. This model is based on rules which are linked with the nodes of the game tree. Our approach consist of checking that the objective which is given by the root of the game tree can be reached in the current context. In order to valid our approach, we have conducted a laboratory experimentation. We have also used our experience about using of gameplay component in a industrial context in order to do a case study.

A geographically constrained molecular phylogeny of Panamanian Aechmea species (Bromeliaceae, subfamily bromelioideae)Maher, Keri Renee 01 January 2007 (has links)
This study lends strong support to the idea that members of Bromeliaceae have undergone a recent adaptive radiation, and therefore show that, at least in part, diversity in the tropics is due to a fast speciation rate and that the tropics can be a "cradle" for new diversification and exploitation of varying ecological niches through the diversification of ecophysiological traits within a lineage.
