ABET learners' experiences of learning in a language other than their primary languages.

Mlotshwa, Norma Vumile 14 October 2008 (has links)
M.Ed. / Despite the many changes socially and politically in our country, particularly in the educational sphere, large numbers of learners in further education still face disadvantages like a legacy of inferior education and studying in a language other that their primary language, all of which impact on their learning. Recent literature on the experiences of Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) learner’s experiences of learning in language other than their primary language identifies a number of problems that impact negatively on students’ performance and learning. The research explores the experiences of ABET learners, learning in a language other than their primary language in order to interprete and arrive at an informed understanding of such experiences. The research strategy in this study is grounded within the interpretative paradigm as the aim is to understand how participants make sense of their realities. i.e. how students make sense of their experiences from their own perspectives. For the purposes of the study, a sample of ABET learners were interviewed. Purposive sampling was used to select participants from diverse languages to serve as “information-rich cases”. Semi- structured interviews aimed at encouraging the respondent’ to engage in conversation intended to elicit respondents’ construction were conducted. The data were analysed using the constant comperative method of data analysis. The main findings of the research is that the ABET learners experience problems when taught in a language which is not their primary language. They feared that they ran a greater risk of labelled as underachievers. They also cited that they have difficulty in manipulating the language in an academic situation. The choice of teacher pedagogy and pace of teaching which exaccebates difficulty in using English was also mentioned by the learners. Another challenge was that they find it easy to use the language in informal context, but struggle with the level of sophistication required for an academic level. There is a need for closer links to be made between learners’ life experiences and lesson content and structure. The curriculum must address the real experiences that adult learners bring with them into the classroom and offer to learners the conceptual tools which they need to make sense of and interprete their experiences in the society. Awareness of students’ experiences could enable educators to exceed guidelines for creating an environment which fosters language learning and to choose relevant course materials and select appropriate teaching methods as well as introduce measures to redress the impact of the legacy of inferior schooling in order to enhance quality learning. / Mrs. N.F. A educação de jovens e adultos na formação de professores de matemática: expectativas e desafios / Young and adult students education in the formation of Mathematics teachers: expectations and challenges

Silva, Kleber William Alves da 18 April 2012 (has links)
The present research tried to examine the professional development of the teachers of Young and Adult Students Education at Rede Municipal de Guarulhos [Guarulhos City Public Schools] as Mathematics teachers as well as the role of an instructional intervention in terms of continued education at city public schools. In order to do such research we tried, first of all, to analyze answers given to questions posed to nine teachers - a questionnaire composed of ten questions formulated with the aim of obtaining answers to our research matter: understanding in which way and range the continued education program - at Guarulhos City public schools - has contributed in the definition of postures and ways to be taken by Mathematics teachers of young and adult students education. Next, meanings were attributed to these teachers manifestations, via impregnation of aspects previously considered - of political, cognitive and cultural nature. The results indicate that the teachers of Young and Adult Students Education at Rede Municipal de Guarulhos, despite not having had in their initial formation and effective continued orientation in this modality, have reflected and revised their understanding about how to deal with Mathematics teaching and learning processes for young and adult students. They also indicate that these teachers have reflected about their own posture facing Mathematics education with EJA, taking into consideration, somehow, the specificity of young and adult subjects previous (mathematical) knowledge.

The motivation for this work arose from the evident necessity to reflect upon and evaluate the modular structure applied to YAE, which has been used for ten years now, more precisely, since 1996, at first it was presented as a local government approved, experimental project only, as an alternative with the intent to lower the school year failing and drop out rates, which have been commonplace amongst young and adult students throughout the Brazilian education history. The school was born in the 90´s, in a time of a broad-spectrum discussion, national and international, focusing on the public policies and state responsibility concerning the assurance of citizens´ right to education, in any age. The research was aimed at collecting answers to questions I had made, as the principal of the school such as: Is the experience of learning the contents of a module able to make significant difference regarding the quality factor in the lives of YAE students? Is the quality defferential only because of the module organization or would there be other factors within the school´s daily routine that would help improve the students´ feelings of accomplishment? Which would be the pros and cons within the school that could have influence on the educational practice? Looking into the experience of authors involved with the hardships related to the education and evaluation of young and adult students, such as Freire, Arroyo, Haddad, Oliveira, Ribeiro, Paiva, Cappelletti, Abramowicz, Sobrinho, Afonso, Galindo, Belloni, De Sordi, Alaiz and others, I seek theoretical support for this research. The methodological option was for case study, given the uniqueness of the subject of the investigation: a school specific for young and adult students. Qualitative and quantitative aspects were focused upon, being the first prioritized, but within a sense of integration and complementation. The collection of empirical data was realized through a critical analysis of the school´s main official document: its Pedagogical Political Project, and through the application of a questionnaire to various individuals involved with the school. The categories of analysis contemplated in the evaluation of the school were: its structure and its mode of functioning, the periods of school time and recess in the learning process, its curriculum and overall management. The research leads to the acknowledgement that this particular school provides a differentiated reality and that the way in which it is organized has presented a satisfactory response in the education of young and adult students / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar a experiência diferenciada de uma escola de Educação de Jovens e Adultos na cidade de Campinas.
