What’s Missing? The Gap Between Non-Academic and Academic Leadership Communication Sources

Golden, Megan Mary 07 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study compares what we know through academic research about organizational leadership communication and what non-academic sources say about leadership communication. Moreover, this study seeks to understand if academic leadership communication research is effectively being translated to non-academic leadership communication advice and to what degree the advice given in the self-help books or blogs many leaders count on to enhance their leadership communication skills align with the findings from academic studies on leadership. Based on grounded theory, a qualitative thematic content analysis was conducted. Six academic articles, two blog sites, and two self-help books about leadership communication were analyzed individually in an attempt to explore what themes emerged about leadership communication and the qualities of a leader. The five nonacademic themes found in the blogs and self-help books were take care of yourself, embrace uncertainty, know who you are, practice interdependence, and be approachable. The four academic themes were two-way communication, organizational culture, confident leadership, and transformational leadership. The final themes from nonacademic and academic sources were compared to see how they were similar and how they differed among sources.

The process of rehabilitation for 0-6 year old children with cerebral palsy at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya

Ngota, Daniel Odhiambo January 2018 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Physiotherapy) - MSc(Physio) / Introduction: Cerebral palsy is one of the leading causes of disability globally. The number of new cases of children with cerebral palsy (CP) is on the increase. Rehabilitation is the most common intervention used to help children with CP in Kenya. Early initiation of the rehabilitation process, and involvement of the family are important for optimal functional outcomes for children with cerebral palsy. This study aimed to establish the incidence of children under six years old with CP at the physiotherapy and occupational therapy department at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya in 2015. This was done in order to establish the need for rehabilitation services. Furthermore, the study aimed to explore and describe the direct patient process of care as part of the current rehabilitation process followed for children with CP from the age of 0to 6 years in order to identify any room for improvement. Study population and Methodology: Data were collected in two phases. Phase A consisted of collecting information pertaining to the number of new cases (incidence) of children with CP under six years of age in 2015 treated at the therapy (occupational and physiotherapy) departments at KNH. For this purpose, all records of children with CP under the age of six years at the rehabilitation department in 2015 were included and reviewed. For Phase B, a mixed methods approach and a parallel convergent design were used to explore the direct patient process of care component of the rehabilitation process.

Distriktssköterskors dokumentation i omvårdnadsjournal vid telefonrådgivning.

Johansson, Birgitta, Skoglund, Kerstin January 2007 (has links)
<p>The aim of the study was to describe what district nurses, who work with telephone- advice, document in patient record, to be able to develop their documentation. The Authors have examined 50 patient records. The examination tool is collected from “Lokal anvisning för hälso- och sjukvården I Södra Älvsborg”. The audit areas was record keeping, review and planning, realization, individual nursing and the patients participation, information, education and agreement. The sample was stratified to avoid examining only one district nurses´ documentation. The sample was from, the five first and the five last telephone-advices that was documented in patient record, the five first days in July 2006. The result of the audit shows a lack of documentation in nursing record with telephone-advice, for example the patients problems is missing, it can lead to a poorer security of the patient. The Authors conclusion is that the district nurses who works with telephone-advice needs education in documentation, to increase and improve security of the patient in nursing and treatment.</p> / <p>Syftet med studien var att beskriva vad distriktssköterskor dokumenterar i samband med telefonrådgivning för att kunna utveckla distriktssköterskors omvårdnadsdokumentation vid telefonrådgivningssituationer.

The relationship between formal and informal reasoning

Ohm, Eyvind 21 October 2005
In traditional tasks of formal reasoning, participants are asked to evaluate the validity of logical arguments. While this research tradition has contributed in many ways to our understanding of human reasoning, the extent to which this body of research generalizes to everyday, or informal, reasoning is unclear (e.g., Evans & Thompson, 2004; Galotti, 1989). The main goal of this dissertation was to illustrate the benefits of applying an informal approach to the study of conditional reasoning. In six experiments, everyday conditionals in the form of inducements (promises and threats) and advice (tips and warnings) were investigated. The results support three main conclusions. First, people recruit a substantial amount of background knowledge when interpreting and reasoning with these conditionals. Specifically, inducements were found to be different from advice on several pragmatic variables (Experiment 1); these variables also predicted differences in inference patterns (Experiment 2). Second, these studies provide further support for a probabilistic interpretation of conditionals (e.g., Evans & Over, 2004; Oaksford & Chater, 2001). Thus, in Experiments 3-5, estimates of different conditional probabilities predicted a number of judgments people make about inducements and advice. A particularly interesting finding was that the effectiveness of these conditionals in changing behaviour did not seem to depend on how likely they were perceived to be true. Finally, Experiment 6 adopted a decision-theoretic analysis (e.g., Over, Manktelow, & Hadjichristidis, 2004), showing that the effectiveness and quality of inducements and advice were tied to perceptions of subjective utility and preferences among possible outcomes. This dissertation concludes with a theoretical discussion of the nature of the relationship between formal and informal reasoning.
