Assessing the PM10 footprint of an iron and steel plant on ambient air quality : modelling PM10 emissions from the ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark Works iron and steel plant.Jagathlal, Sham 03 March 2014 (has links)
Iron and steel plants in general are significant sources of PM10 pollution. Many studies have concluded that PM10 is harmful to human health and well being. ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark Works falls within the jurisdiction of the Vaal Triangle Airshed Priority Area (VTAPA) and has been given PM10 reduction targets in the Air Quality Management Plan. The aim of this study is to use dispersion modelling to determine the impact of the Vanderbijlpark Works steel plant on ambient PM10 and to assess the effectiveness of the reduction strategies with respect to PM10
The AERMOD dispersion model was chosen for the exercise because of its reliability when modelling near field dispersions on relatively flat terrain. Meteorological data was obtained from on-site stations. Emissions data was obtained from an already existing emissions inventory on site. The study modelled the PM10 baseline for 2010 and then modelled the predicted concentrations after implementation of the strategies as outlined in the VTAPA. The modeling scenarios were compared to the measured PM10 data from the fence line monitors.
The following findings were made: Point sources were not significant contributors to PM10
emission. Modeling of area sources and other fugitive dust sources were found to be high
and when compared to measured concentrations were found to be over predicted. It is
concluded that the fugitive sources have been found to be the major source of PM10 emissions and that reduction of fugitives should feature prominently in emission reduction plans going forward. In addition, the fugitive emissions inventory needs to be refined to enhance the accuracy of the predictions.

Foi aplicado o questionário International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) para investigar os sintomas respiratórios. Conclusão: Os resultados encontrados na cidade de Vitória sugerem que o risco de exposição às emissões industriais pode ser maior que o da emissão por fontes automotivas / Introduction: Almost 800 thousand premature deaths have been attributed to the air pollution around the world, and several studies have showed that even when the established patterns for pollutants emissions were achieved, short and seasonal changes in the pollutant levels, or long term changes may lead to a different harmful health effects on the exposed population. The elderly and children have been identified the most susceptible groups in terms of air pollution health effects. Vitória is a seaboard Brazilian industrial city, which has faced an increase in the automotive fleet in the last decade, and, consequently, air pollution levels. Casuistic and methods: This study compared the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in school children exposed, mainly, to industrial or automotive sources. We carried out a cross sectional study with 350 children of two schools located in different areas. The main source of air pollution in each area was assessed by factor analysis based on components identified in Tradescantia pallid leafs through fluorescence x-ray technique. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire was applied to investigate respiratory symptoms. Referred respiratory morbidity was also investigated. Associations between areas and frequency of symptoms were tested with the chi-square test. Logistic regression models were used to calculate the prevalent odds ratio (OR) of the main respiratory symptoms. Results: There was no significant association between area and prevalence of respiratory symptoms. In terms of referred disease, rhinitis was associated with living in the industrial area, OR= 2 (CI95%:1.1; 3.7). Although without significant statistical association, asthma, cough and flue were also more frequent among those living in the industrial area. Conclusion: Despite the increase of automotive contribution to the pool of air pollutants in the city of Vitória, our results suggest that, in this specific situation, being exposed to industrial emissions may be more hazardous than being exposed to automotive emissions

The application of differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry for the determination of copper, lead, zinc and cadmium in airborne particulate matterJahed, Mohammed Nazeem January 1995 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Chemistry))--Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town, 1995 / An analytical method using Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry was
developed for determining trace quantities of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn in airborne
particulate matter. The levels of the metallic pollutants were evaluated against
meteorological data.
Instrumental parameters and sample processing were optimised for determining
the metals in the concentration range 1 to 40 μg/l with a percentage relative
standard deviation (%RSD) less than 10%.
Airborne particulate matter was decomposed by heating in a mixture of
Hydrochloric and Sulphuric acids. Recovery studies were used to evaluate the
digestion procedure, in the absence of a suitable reference material. The
percentage recovery for the metals were between 95% and 100%. A total of 77
air samples were collected from January to December 1992, on the campus of the
Peninsula Technikon. The samples were collected over 24 hour periods by
filtration at a sampling rate of 20 liters per minute. The total average concentration
for the metals was 25.3μg/m³. . No Cd was detected in any of the samples.

Thesis (MTech (Environmental Health))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010 / Air pollution is a global problem and it can also have a larger impact in developing countries like South-Africa. Mossel Bay was one of the regions in the Western-Cape that was rated to have potentially poor air quality. With above mentioned in mind, the research was done in Bayview. Bayview is a upper income suburb of Mossel-Bay. The suburb is surrounded by industrial activities that increased the possibility of a bad status of the air. This research measured the concentrations of the primary pollutants, SO2, NO2, PM10, O3 en Benzine, as well as the meteorological data for a period of one year as from the 1st October 2008 to the 30th of September 2009. The monitoring was done by using the mobile air quality monitoring station of the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning's that was situated in Mossel Bay. The research also correlated with the human aspects of air quality control and the monitoring results. The quality of life of the Bayview residents was measured by using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire had amongst others, obtained the symptoms of certain air quality related diseases that the 114 respondents have recorded for the responding period of air quality monitoring. Other aspects that were researched were obtaining the social status, exposure, and work exposure and health consciousness of the respondents. Air quality surveys can fail if not put in the context of the perceptions of the affected communities. Therefore the perceptions of the respondents were also tested by a structured questionnaire. Aspects of perceptions that were tested were amongst others, the visual influence of perceptions, exposure, social status and the perception of the hazard. The results of the monitoring station for the period from 1st October 2008 to 30 September 2009, were compared with the proposed standards of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (Act 39 of 2004) South-African National Ambient Air Quality Standards, as well as the SANS 1929 target values for PM10. There were no exceedences of the measured pollutants against the National Air Quality Standards. The results found that the SANS 1929 standards were also not exceeded for SO2, NO2, O' and C6H6. The concentrations of PM10 equaled the SANS standards of 75pg/m3 on a few occasions. However, the SANS 1929 daily target values of 50pg/m3 were exceeded on a few occasions. Overall though, the air quality status of the research area was within the legislative conditions. Twenty six point three percent (26.3% n = 30) of the respondents did not indicate any symptoms of any air quality related illnesses during the study period.

Avaliação da poluição atmosférica de elementos químicos pela análise de líquen epifítico no campus da Cidade Universitária de São Paulo / Assessment of atmospheric pollution of chemical elements by epiphytic lichen analysis at the campus of the São Paulo UniversityRocha, Rosiana Rocho 05 November 2015 (has links)
Air pollution has been a frequent topic of research, due to the effects that it can cause on the health of living organisms, environment and climate. In order to identify pollution sources and their effects, biomonitoring has been studied due to its low cost and possibility of sampling in wide geographic areas. In this study for passive biomonitoring of air pollution levels at the Cidade Universitária Armando Salles de Oliveira (CUASO), University of São Paulo campus, epiphytic lichens of Canoparmelia texana species were used. The lichens collected from tree barks at different sampling sites in the CUASO were cleaned, freeze-dried and ground for analyses. Lichen samples were analyzed by X - ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) and neutron activation analysis (NAA). For XRFS, cylindrical pellets of samples were prepared to determine As, Br, Ca, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Rb, S, Sr and Zn. For NAA, lichen sample aliquots along with synthetic elemental standards were irradiated both for short and long periods at the IEA-R1 nuclear research reactor. The induced activities were measured by a gamma ray spectrometer to determine As, Br, Ca Cd, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, U, V and Zn. The precision and accuracy of the results were evaluated by the analysis of certified reference materials (MRCs). Their results of relative errors and standard deviations were below 15% for most of the elements. The standardized difference or En score values were lower than |1| indicating satisfactory results. Replicate analyses of a lichen sample by XRFS and NAA, indicated good homogeneity of the sample for the elements determined. The lichen results showed that the mean concentrations of As, Br, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Rb, Sb, Se and U were higher in samples from CUASO than those from regions considered unpolluted. For Fe, K, La, S, V and Zn, they were of the same order of magnitude. The correlation study between the elements showed high correlation (r > 0.7) for elements originated from the natural and anthropogenic sources. The principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the results showed six major components, where components 1 and 2 accounted for 52.9 % of the variance of the data. Enrichment factors (EF) calculated for the results of lichens from CUASO and a region considered unpolluted were EF> 1 for most elements, showing that these elements may be from anthropogenic sources. From the results obtained in this study can be concluded that the elements found in lichens from CUASO can be originated from sources such as resuspension of soil particles and anthropogenic emissions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exposure to air pollution on lung function of children. Two groups of clinically healthy children, living at different areas of the city of Cubatão, who had been submitted to lung function tests in a previous cross-sectional study (1983 summertime and 1985 wintertime) were annually reexamined using the same type of test during the period 1987 to 1989. On epidemiological basis this is a longitudinal study, where every individual of the two groups of children was measured at each ocasion, always in the same season of the previous examination. About 1,110 children from all areas of the city were examined once a year using dry spirometer, with special emphasis on FVC, FEV 1,0, PEF and FMF25-75 per cent measurements, since they were considered as those which could be most affected by the local air pollution. Information regarding the conditions of air pollution were obtained from the CETESB\'s written reports. They include the estimate emissions of the main industries of the region; the hourly concentrations of particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and ozone measured in the sampling stations located in Vila Parisi, Cubatão-Centro and Vila Nova during the October/1983 to December/1989 period and also the results of the Source Control Strategy introduced by CETESB since 1984. It was observed that the acute episodes of air pollution due to PM were reduced in number. However, those due to photochemicaf oxidants, mainly represented by ozone leveis, were progressively more frequent during the period from 1984 to 1988; both their number and their severity increased during this period. Spirometric results shows that in both groups of children the lung function was significantly impaired, with losses of 5 to 8 per cent per year, when compared with the initial values of the cross-sectional studies. Despite the fact that all lung function parameters decline, the flow (PFE and FMF2s-7s per cent ) values were those most affected and closely related to the most serious episodes of air pollution due to photochemical oxidants mainly those observed in 1988. Children living in the areas of Cota 95, Cota 200, Jardim das Indústrias and Vila Natal, situated in the nearest area of influence of the chemical and petrochemical industries, presented worst spirometric results than children living in other places of Cubatão. The lung function of the examined children did not attain pathological values, despite the fact of presenting the worst results in flow parameters during the year of 1988. It was observed that their lung function is progressively impaired year by year, a clear indication of the progressive effects of air pollution on their lung function, and if such impairment continues there will carne the time when lung function will probably reach a pathologicallevel. It is concluded that there is an urgent need of improving the quality of air of Cubatão to avoid serious Public Health problems in a quite near future.

Incorporating high-dimensional exposure modelling into studies of air pollution and healthLiu, Yi January 2015 (has links)
Air pollution is an important determinant of health. There is convincing, and growing, evidence linking the risk of disease, and premature death, with exposure to various pollutants including fine particulate matter and ozone. Knowledge about the health and environmental risks and their trends is important stimulus for developing environmental and public health policy. In order to perform studies into the risks of environmental hazards on human health study there is a requirement for accurate estimates of exposures that might be experienced by the populations at risk. In this thesis we develop spatio-temporal models within a Bayesian framework to obtain accurate estimates of such exposures. These models are set within a hierarchical framework in a Bayesian setting with different levels describing dependencies over space and time. Considering the complexity of hierarchical models and the large amounts of data that can arise from environmental networks mean that inference using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) may be computational challenging in this setting. We use both MCMC and Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA) to implement spatio-temporal exposure models when dealing with high–dimensional data. We also propose an approach for utilising the results from exposure models in health models which allows them to enhance studies of the health effects of air pollution. Moreover, we investigate the possible effects of preferential sampling, where monitoring sites in environmental networks are preferentially located by the designers in order to assess whether guideline and policies are being adhered to. This means the data arising from such networks may not accurately characterise the spatial-temporal field they intend to monitor and as such will not provide accurate estimates of the exposures that are potentially experienced by populations. This has the potential to introduce bias into estimates of risk associated with exposure to air pollution and subsequent health impact analyses. Throughout the thesis, the methods developed are assessed using simulation studies and applied to real–life case studies assessing the effects of particulate matter on health in Greater London and throughout the UK.
