Navigating Discrimination: A Historical Examination of Womens’ Experiences of Discrimination and Triumph within the United States Military and Higher Educational InstitutionsDavis, Dackri 16 May 2014 (has links)
Amelia Earhart opened the skies for many female pilots in the 1930s. It was because of her that many young women followed their reverie to becoming a pilot. This dream led many to answer the call when the United States Army Air force needed ferrying pilots when World War II began. Female aviators were contracted as civil service personnel and placed in different units to ferry planes across the country and to tow targets during live ammunition practice by combat soldiers. These units were later combined to form the Women Air force Service Pilots (WASPs). The anomaly of the WASPs was that they were the only women’s unit who joined a men’s only division of the Army, though they were not considered to be full military personnel. Never before had the United States government allowed female pilots to participate in the military. While providing aerial support services for the United States Air Force, the WASPs were not granted military benefits, nor were they considered part of the military, despite being required to follow all military protocols. In 1977, after Congressional hearings, the WASPs were finally granted full military honors. This dissertation examines the experiences of those women within the context of the institutions of higher education where they were trained and in terms of the varied forms of discrimination that they faced, highlighting the ways in which they navigated those challenges.

In spring 1944, Allied bombing of France was to reach its maximum intensity since the beginning of World War II. Nearly two years after the great turning points in 1942, the military situation was now largely in favour of the Allies. The final defeat of the Third Reich now appeared inevitable. The preparation of OVERLORD, the renewed application of large-scale power on the European continent, faced strategic challenges and required novel techniques. A little-known scientist, Solly Zuckerman, a brilliant zoologist but also a civilian unknown in military circles, persuaded the Allied high command of the validity of his air plan. This “Transportation Plan” proposed to strike decisively at the French railway system in order to disrupt the flow of enemy reinforcements to the Allied beachhead during the landings. Daring by strategic innovation, risky by the obvious threat to French civilians, Zuckerman's plan ran immediately into the hostile scrutiny of the great chiefs of strategic bombing, who were engaged in their almost "private" air campaign against Germany. The issue of civilian casualties brutally shook politicians including Winston Churchill, and ultimately went back to Franklin Roosevelt. Unknown in historiography, the “Transportation Plan” represents a fascinating history of the preparation of the Normandy landings.

ENGLISH: The South African Air Force actively participated on different fronts during the Second World War. Apart from maritime operations along the African coast and the transport of personnel and material in Africa and Europe, they also operated in three theatres of war in East Africa, North Africa and the countries bordering the Central Mediterranean. However, the question now arises how effective these operations were and to which extent the South African Air Force contributed towards the ultimate destruction of the Axis Powers. To answer these questions the different operations of the Air Force Squadrons during the war were analized and evaluated. The researcher arrived at the following conclusions: In the course of the war the South African Air Force played a substantial role in the subjugation of the Axis Powers. In Eastern and Northern Africa, as well as in the Mediterranean area, the South African Squadrons excelled in assisting land and sea force operations while they were also instrumental in the attainment of air superiority. At the same time squadrons involved in maritime reconnaissance and transportation also took honours for their efforts. This magnificent record was achieved through supreme courage, fortitude and idealism on the part of the men and women involved. South Africa could therefore be justly proud of the more than 44 000 men who volunteered for service in the South African Air Force during the war. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Jurisprudence / unrestricted

When the boss comes… and goes : A qualitative study on the impact of a change of management on employeesat the Air Combat School in UppsalaEdfeldt, Emil, Sandberg, Peter January 2021 (has links)
The study aims to map the impact of a change of management on employees regarding motivation and leadership at the Air Combat School in Uppsala. The survey covers the period March to May 2021.The first part of the survey was carried out with the ambition of gaining a fact-based background on how long managers sit in their positions. The second part of the study continued to use qualitative methods inspired by grounded theory and through an interview study to examine employees' experiences of managerial changes. The purpose was to try to identify the impact they have on the managers 'conditions for developing leadership but also the impact on the employees' motivation. The focus during the study has been on man and his experiences. The aim was also to shed light on the effects of changes of management from an organizational perspective. Demonstrated results in the study after analysis indicate that the experiences are surprisingly equally independent of employment category. The respondents expressed surprising insights and understanding of the managers' situation and challenges. The results of the study also show that there are mixed experiences in all employment categories of managerial changes. There are governing and supporting themes that build up if a change of manager is perceived as positive or negative. Themes identified were leadership, information and conditions. The conclusions of the study are that a change of manager affects the motivation of employees and managers' ability to apply developing leadership. Creating the right conditions for a change of manager appears to be absolutely central, based on developed themes. The study also shows generally similar experiences within the employment categories and emphasizes the importance of fulfilling developed themes in order to reduce the impact on motivation and conditions. The greatest impact on employees' motivation takes place in the step of security, with uncertainty and anxiety as consequences.
